If the enemies formation is spread out longer than yours they will wrap around your phalanx. I think aXa's idea would be best, square formation, they wrap around, then you flank them. This is how I did my yari ashigaru in shogun 2 sometimes with spear squares.

It can be a winning move, but honestly good players never attack phalanx head on anyway. When I play against heavy phalanx faction, I make sure to get 6 unit of velites, and I abuse their immobility. With some focus fire and triarii to defend against cav, the phalanx will take enough damage for my legionnaries to finish them off, with some sweet flanking attacks.

Range units are the bane of phalanxes. So fun to turn on skirmisher mode and watch as they try to march in formation into a wall of missiles. I usually try to use calv(ironic I know) to flank around back to make them freak out a bit and try to about face, then smash into them with infantry or if they don't move I advance my infantry close enough to charge in after my cav hits them in the back to disrupt the phalanx formation.

=\ while its cool to see them fixing the game so "quickly", still looks bad the game requires some 200+ bug fixes within the first week.

yeah the amount of fixes is pretty bad. still though, they sound great. pretty much what people wanted (besides the flag thing in field battles).
that means they either listen to the community or know the right direction by themselves. really looking forward to see how this patch plays out. to the people planning to play on sunday, i'd love to join you guys.

I read through the patch notes and looks like they haven't fixed not being able to attack settlements that are being blockaded by a third faction.

The outside phalanx's would be staggered back to begin with so you'd need an odd number of infantry but thats the gist of it.

Hard edge hammer and phalanx 11 calv 9 phalanx.

That "bug" has been around in every tw to date just in rome 2 people realize it because you can siege and attack settlements with navies.

Pretty sure it was fixed in previous TW's. It's the same with navies routinely surviving with very few survivors after a loss. They fixed that in Shogun 2 and I think in Empire as well. Rome 2 has a distressingly high number of previously fixed bugs come up again.

Don't get me wrong, I love TW and I even like Rome II, but the state of the game at release (and including the current beta patch version) isn't worth a release.

I'm not saying the preformance bugs were not an issue for some people. What i am saying is that people being angry with preformance issues lead them to nitpick everything they did not like/were not used to about the game and chalk it up as a catastrophic failure to the TW series, when it was clearly something they did not fully understand or something that was just plain minor in most cases.

friend of mine played the beta abit and said that AI turns in singleplayer is massively improved (the playable factions take as long as they do now, and the rest is like 2secs for ALL) so i'd imagine multiplayer being faster as well

The end turn load times for AI Factions has been massively improved for the campaign, tried it myself.

yeah time between turns is rapidly fast now. also, they somehow managed to stop my game to stutter during battles. wopee.
campaignmap fps are still kinda bad, but playable, as they were the entire time for me.

Playing Suebi, rushed tech for Berserkers. Going to get them next turn and destroy everything. Maybe go on a warpath straight for Rome, razing everything along the way.
