Oh wow, this game, so many options... still nerve wracking even on the first mission

I feel like also commenting on how it was suggested above me this game should go into real time. Really? There's no way to make that work without redesigning everything in this game... you simply cannot manage every soldier you have in real time and even then some of your units will have to be AI controlled which would make thing worse. That's how I saw things when I played Final Fantasy XII and XIII series

permadeath = nervewracking

like playing fire emblem, except you couldn't even save in fire emblem (I know there's iron man mode or w/e its called in xcom)

Its okay, everyone is slightly more expendable than fire emblem.
Except for that 100 kill colonel that you had since the second mission that gets crit 3 times in a row by cyberdiscs and a muton. Fuck that.

Damn this game. I recently started EW playthrough as a preparation for LW but I have a really hard time taking breaks. It's always "just one more mission, just one more turn!". It's one of the few games I find REALLY addictive. Thanks to that, for the last couple of days I'm really sleepy at work, because Xcom doesn't sleep

On another note, I've been watching some LW Let's Play's from Beaglerush and Mabozir (or however his name is spelled) and this mod is insane. 90 hp sectopod trolololo, it's healthbar was bigger than the thing itself :D

I´ve wathced some Beaglerush LP´s as well. It seems like the AI in LW is either bugged or extremly stupid with aliens always going on overwatch and exalts always reloading. On terror missions the chryssalids run to the squad instead of the nearest civilian, which makes it a million times easier. LW must have broken something.

i think most of it is in vanilla as well. aliens dont commit suicide so if you overwatch them with a bit of covering fire and surpress / flashbang the alien with the best shot, there is a high chance they wont do anything because any other action than overwatch will kill them. chryssalids also ran towards the squad on their activation move.

That only happened if you were flanking them.

Floaters are really stupid in Long War. One or two people over watching can keep 5ish floaters at bay. Heavy floaters are way more aggressive though.

Having just completed a vanilla classic run, most of these behaviours are present in vanilla.

The aliens overwatch because beagle forces them to. It's very easy to force certain reactions from the AI once you know the conditions. For instance, flanking an alien makes them dash. So you can just suppress them with a gunner to get a free opportunist shot.

Exalt always reloads because that's the whole point of using the comm relays. It's also why beagle targets the heavies and operatives first, as they have a nasty habit of using explosives when disabled.

Chrysalids run toward you on activation with very few exceptions. Generally this is a good thing, but if you are, say, engaging a couple floaters at the same time, things can go south real quick.

so i put in about 60 hours in xcom long war and then i just lost as the aliens overpowered me with a billion missions at once into losing most countries in a span of two month.

guess i have to try another run and this time do everything a bit better.

Throwing a scanner and uncovering 1 big cyber disc and 2 normal ones with a couple of drones is the scariest god damn thing to ever behold.

I'm sure theres scarier stuff but that takes the cake for me.

I think I've played enough for now to see this game will take a while that I'll put it on the side. I am watching TheOddOne still play it though, and yesterday he did one terror mission where this mod has a 54 HP gigantic Chrysallid which looked scary as fuck, and a landed large UFO mission that had 45 total aliens (5 squad Thin Men holy crap).

But yea, while every thing looks cool, there's just so many choices to take the time to go through, and I think what gets annoying is the rotation of your squad members because of mission fatigue. A large squad size is nice, but wow so much time is used just preparing a mission and keeping track of things

I have yet to see a Chryssalid queen

I like and dislike the constant rotation of the soldiers. On one hand I like the rotation because your actually making good use of the other soldiers instead of using the same 4-6 for the entire game and have to make the decision on who and who not to take on a mission incase you need to save some of the best troops for something harder. On the other hand I dislike it because I can't use my best sniper over and over again lol

So I've played about 30 hours according to Steam, likely less actual playing time since I do tend to afk/idle here and there and maybe counting restarts from crashes? Might buy the dlc if it goes on sale somewhere since the game seems fun enough. As for the game itself, I have had some difficulty in learning the hard way how to progress through the maps and how terrain can be such a pain in the butt. Overall game is pretty decent (for now), just gotta get over the dumb crashes or knowing what the heck to build.

Well if you have any specific questions, we can probably help you out. The game/DLC is usually included in every Steam sale.

One of the predecessors had the option to play in real time or round based. The key to real time was the pause button . And that the overwatch had more options. Changed the game up abit, because the first one to spot something was most the second one to fire.
Still better then TftD, where the aliens were the first one to spot something and shoot

Your main issue is twofold:

First, you have a tendency to spread out far too much. It's difficult for soldiers to engage the enemy if they're really far away from everyone else.

Second, you often reveal too much of the map after moving half your team. The primary goal in the tactical layer is to only activate and fight a single pod at a time. As you activate more aliens, the fight becomes exponentially harder. So while it may be tempting to run and gun flank an alien, you have to keep in mind if you have the turns and resources to deal with another pod should once appear.

As for the strategic layer, you've already found out that satellite rushing is pretty much required. Past that, it's just a matter of building things you need to not die.

And los issues fuck everyone. Such is xcom

I actually prefered to play with real time activated on XCOM apocalypse. It was a welcomed change from the tedious base clearing from TftD to be able to complete misions much faster. On XCOM EU, there are not hours long missions on the tactical layer to annoy us, even tho, nothing gave the amazing atmosphere of terror missions from the first two games.

Man, Apocalypse is an amazing game. I think I should replay it. It's also on Steam pre-packaged with properly configured DosBox so it's really easy to play even though it's so old.

It sucks that a game made in 201X is not nearly as replayable as a game made in 1994. I have played through the first XCOM so many times and it is still fun because everything is procedurally generated and every game feels different. I couldn't even finish my second playthrough of XCOM EU (after I had beaten it on Ironman Classic) because it's so scripted and pigeon-holes you into the same satellite-spamming strategy on higher difficulties

Fuck TftD though. Especially the ship rescue missions.

30 hours on XCOM. I remember that's how life was... before Long War.
