So in long war, there are different types of UFOs, and you need to be able to understand what they are after depending of their type and altitude.
They will usually first send a scout to find your satellite, and after that a fighter to take it out. If you don't have many operational aircraft then you might want to let those scout go do their business without bothering them, let assault ships in low altitude land peacefully and engage them on the ground, and only focus on high altitude fighters that are going after your satellites.

My god, long war is hard. Get some missions with sectoids and drones, then the first one introducing thin men and the next thing that happens is two large UFOs that i can't even shoot down cause my interceptors got destroyed by scouts before. Kind of uncool to get two spawns of chysalids on you with lcpls.

long war introduces the concept of choosing your fights. You are not supposed to win every battle like you were in the original. (well you technically can on ground but it is very very very hard). You have to be able to determine what challenges you can tackle and which ones you can't. Usually, large UFO landing during the first month is a no go. I even got 1 as my first mission on march first, with only rookies as fresh troups. These mission will throw chryssalisds at you and your troupes are not really ready for them. There is also the outsider pod with 4 outsiders.
The same applys to the airgame. Early game, with the non upgraded interceptors and their shitty missiles, you're not going to be able to shoot down anything bigger than scouts and the occasional small raider. Large ships will 2 shot your planes so break contact as soon as you get the visual, let them go to their business, you cannot fight them in the air.
Buckle up, accept your loses, you will have to lose some thing at the beginning, but don't worry, it's a long war
Be nice, buy wards and don't feed double buff.

I just found out about this Long War mod while lurking on twitch and watching LoL's TheOddOne play it... is it a fun and rewarding to play this mod for those who've beaten it? I'm in the long process of playing other games but may drop them for now if this mod is doable and doesn't make me tear my hair out (i.e. I don't get screwed over like in the Thinmen Porter mission and the unlimited spawning Chrysallid mission in EW)

There are a lot of changes to the base game. I personally like a lot of them, as it makes the difficulty of the base game a lot more consistent (eg. no more autowinning after lasers/carapace/squadsight snipers), and it also addresses a lot of my longstanding gripes with some mechanics.

I'd recommend watching some LPs of it to get a better feel for the game. For instance.

long war is really good but also really really long. i am about 40 hours in my first playthrough and i am not even close to finishing the game. its a hell of a lot more difficult and the strategic part of the game plays a much bigger role. i like it but its definately something that will frustrate you to all hell sometimes.

Well I finally finished downloading it. I'll probably give it a shot here and there soon. Again after seeing a bit of play from TheOddOne the last few days, with new content I'm hopeful it's fun enough to play right to the end with viable but different strats.

And hopefully nothing will be more frustrating this time, than Thin Men and Mutons critting my soldiers to death while you are hunkered in full cover with smoke...

Thin men and Outsiders have crazy high accuracy on anything higher than normal, they get singled out for additional accuracy boosts beyond the global accuracy boosts from difficulty. Thin men squad leaders/navigators also eventually get Executioner and Squad Sight.

UFOPedia has a pretty solid section for Long War: http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Long_War

Make it REAL-Time and i'll play it 24/7 like i did with X-Com3. This TB stuff is so outdated and slowpaced it pisses me off. Ye, it was legit in early 90-s because of PCs being slow, but, cmon, why does everyone make TB strategies and RPGs these days?

Because a real-time X-Com is essentially an RTS? There are plenty of reasons for and against turn-based combat, and none of them have to do with "PCs being slow".

A little variety in the game market never hurt anyone.

Because turn based games are fun too. There is a full industry of board games out there which is actually growing.

Yes i'm very much aware of board games. But what's fun in P'n'P is not the same on PC. Board games were designed to be played TB. Its their core and their rules cannot be approprietely transfered into a real time game w/o ruining the gameplay (real-time chess any1?). But tactical simulators are competely different story. They simulate a REAL TIME tactical combat. Why on earth would you make it T-Based? (coming from a huge X-com series and JA2 fan btw). These games are ment to be played in real time. You guys ever tried X-Com 3? or Baldur's gate? This is how a tactical combat should look like. IMO, ofc. I played tons of TBased tactical simualtors and i'm so sick of that dull gameplay that have almost no advantages to real-time simulator with an ability to pause and give commands. There are 0 reasons to make it TB. Does it provide more realism? Obviously, no. These games are laughable in terms of realism to an extent they cant even be called simulators. And yes X-com was made TBased (and JA as well and their predecessors) mostly becase there were no technical means to make them real time (slowness of PCs, no proper interface options etc). Ofc later it all emerged in a separate ganre so atm noone cares about all this stuff. Lots of people (including myself) LOVE these games but still it remains a mystery to me - why do i have to play it exclusively in TB mode?!

Because a lot of people enjoy turn based games very much. Thats pretty much all you need to know.
Im happy about every turnbased game that comes out.

Also: Real Time X-com apocalypse wasnt have as good as turn based in my oppinion.

If you are "sick of dull gameplay" just go away and play other games. Nobody forces you to play games you dont like.

I am facepalming really hard right now.

Dune 2 release - January 1992
UFO enemy unknown release - December 1993

You don't even know what you are talking about. It exists because it is a genre, and some people enjoy it. The whole "no reason" to do it, is already a self defeating argument when you see XCOM EU sales numbers and reviews. There is a reason, money. Get over it.

Yes, you need to register before you can download.

I was surprised when I found that out when I tried downloading it 2 days ago.

Just a note: if you read the fine print at the top of the sign up page, it tells you that you don't need to buy any of the premium packages or whatever the heck they sell there.
