raw for example lowers or removes stat scaling, but adds more flat damage i think. I havent found many weapons myself, i started with a scimitar, but i dont like the moves at all, its supposed to be fast but its rather slow. I am using a longsword i found on enemies, it has a nice lunge attack that i can use after i dodge something. Plus the follow up from the lunge is a quick upwards slash, it looks cool and is far better than what the scimitar does. Cant wait to find more weapons :D

I could upgrade my weapons to +6 with both options. Are there any differences? Beside that, under modifiy equipment I could make my weapons "Raw" weapons. What exactly does that mean and whats the difference to +6? Cost is the same, 1 large shard Umm, what? There should only be one way to make a weapon +6, and that's with the "Modify Equipment" first option at the top of the blacksmith's menu. A +5 weapon shouldn't be showing up in the "Reinforce Weapon" option (the second one). Modifying Equipment is for "Ascending" weapons to a new type of weapon, be it lightning, fire, magic, or whatever (including choosing to continue on the same normal path from +5 normal to +6 normal and +10 normal to +11 normal, where upgrade branches occur at), whereas "Reinforcing" your weapon just levels it up on its existing path until it reaches a branching point. Do not go Raw. It sucks. Raw increases the weapon's base damage and reduces its scaling, however the increased base damage is actually worse than just continuing on a normal path. A raw weapon's base damage will be about like a +7/8 to +12/13 normal weapon(depending on how far you upgrade it), and still has worse scaling so it's still weaker than a normal weapon in that range. Even in a low level game where scaling is nonexistent, an elemental weapon will still also have more damage on its physical part alone, coupled with its elemental part. Raw is nothing more than a beginners trap (like the worthless resistance stat), since it is immediately available before most people even find an ember for other upgrades, and is objectively worse than every other path. Use whatever weapon's moveset you like the most. The weapons are really well balanced overall, so whatever you have the most fun with will be perfectly fine to upgrade. Weapons are about how good you are with its moveset as a player more than anything else.

Hm I think Modify Equipment applies when going from +5 to +6 and +10 to +11, whenever you have to make use of the Large or Very Large Embers. Beyond that you upgrade through Reinforce though.

The question I have now is, how much of a payoff does playing with a controller give? To someone who doesn't spend much money on unnecessary things, is it really worth the extra $20 to play it on a 360 controller?

I would recommend using a controller for this game, I personally think that its basically a requirement because I have NEVER IN MY LIFE seen such poorly designed keyboard controls. Seriously, the keyboard controls are like three steps below fucking Dwarf Fortress in user friendliness. When I dont have a controller to use I dont play this game because its just that bad. Personally I think its worth an extra $20 although ideally you wouldnt need it of course. Maybe you can borrow a spare from a friend. Some people seem to be able to play with keyboard controls though, you could always give it a try.

The keyboard controls are wasd for movement and ijkl for camera. Around the left hand Ctrl makes you walk, Shift is block, Tab is parry, E is use, Space is dodge/sprint, L Alt to one/two-hand weapon, and R/F/C/V switchs your magic/item/left hand/right hand equips. Around the right hand, Attack/Heavy attack are on U and H right next to the camera controls, as is O for target lock/center camera. I do not recommend using the mouse for camera. Menu controls (since there is no pause) is over on the arrow keys and island, with End being open menu, arrow keys (and pgup/pgdwn) for navigation, enter for confirm, backspace for cancel, del to remove equips, and ins to change the stats display. This is really not that strange for menus either, other older games sometimes used this as well (though it's usually home instead of end for the menu). I use a cheap ten dollar controller myself, except when I'm feeling too lazy to grab it, or it's pissing me off because of its annoying deadzone and its finickyness with jump attacks. I'm have no problem with the keyboard controls, but I'm pretty accustomed to that style from other games.

Then again, I might be able to find my old DDR PS2 to PC adapter and just use that. I did buy a new PS2 controller a couple years ago when I was going to go through some old games that I never finished.
