If you can use a controller, definitely go for it, since the controls were designed very well on that, while the default keyboard layout is kind of archaic. Analog sticks are also better for controlling your movement without mouselook. I don't have a problem with parrying the same way I don't mind using tab and r in an fps for scope and reload, no need to sidestep dodge if I'm trying to deflect the blow anyway, and it's just a quick tap. The game naturally plays much better on a controller though, and since you mentioned trying demon's souls, you really should see if you can find that adapter. I have use an xbox 360 controller emulator to get it to work right and reconfigure buttons on my cheap controller, but that's easy to set up. The keyboard controls are adequate enough, but the controller controls are excellent.

Thanks Fyrewolf. I've heard horror stories of input lag when using PS2 to USB adapters, upwards of 0.5 to 1 sec. Do you have any experience / knowledge regarding this? I will run around some pawn shops to find another adapter for my PS2. Do wired PS3 controllers have any problems with lag?

I never had any problem with my ps3 controller on pc .

You can bind it to whatever, I have parry on 'E'

$7.49 on steam atm for this week's midweek madness sale. Wish I had a friend who wanted to play it so I could buy it for them.

I'm really getting into this at the moment. I'd definitely reccomend a controller for it, I really couldn't imagine using a mouse and keyboard for it.

Great game finished it twice, but it gets repetative for me now so I stopped playing. I didn´t really try everything. So maybe I should play it again and try some other builds/classes. But for now I'm kinda done with it and I'm waiting for Dark Souls 2.

It's actually great once you use the DS+DSM fix. The game without the fix has awful controls for it, unbearable actually. I do have an xbox controller for the pc and I still use my mouse and keyboard with the fix.

just get an xbox controller for pc, they are even cheaper when they are like specifically advertised as "for Windows"

If I get the mouse fix, will it affect the use of an Xbox controller later? (I have a 360 pad but my friend has borrowed it at the moment ><)

basically to switch between them you will need to edit 1 line of text by adding ; and removing it to disable the line when you want to switch between them. Basically taking away DSM when you want to use the controller. edit*adding more the popular fix for dark souls that has been always used is DS Fix there is also DSC Fix(c for connectivity which improves online play) and DSM Fix(m for the mouse of course) DS fix is the base fix and then you can have the other 2 if you want, so to undo the mouse fix you can either delete the file or edit a line of text which will be more clear to you once you install the mods and figure it out.
warning though: interesting timing that recently there has been an official update that has broken some games for a few using DS fixes. This is easily fixable though, and there is a reddit thread for it. I'm sure there will be an update too.

Also, when you're human, people can invade your game and PVP you, even if you don't like it =p All of this is quest related and earn things for different factions, well you'll see that later.
About your weapons, I'd say pick the one you like the moveset of. For instance, I really loved the gameplay of the basic reinforced club, its ability to backstab from a large angle an its lunge attack (R2+forward iirc), so I upgraded it all the way to lightning+5 and had fun with it =) Each weapon has a different feel&gameplay, and you can finish the game with any weapon you like. Great axe fire+10 and lightning reinforced club+5 ftw for me ! ...bumping this up to keep it out of the Steam Sales thread.
White/Gold = Friendlies you can summon, most of them are player signs, some are npc. Blue Phantoms are part of the Darkmoon Covenant (hunts in a certain area of the game and hunts people who were indicted).
Here is the full list: http://darksouls.wikidot.com/soul-sign
...the usual recommendation for new players: Don't read walkthroughs. Stay off the wiki. The reddit sub in general has spoilers and it would be cool if you'd keep this thread the same. If you're genuinely stuck at a certain spot and are about to throw the game away because of it... that's when you should look shit up. And then hang your head in sadness.

Maybe that was the designers' intention. WELCOME TO DARK SOULS!

Evil, evil devs. I didn't wander into the graveyard but I did get sliced to bits by ghosts in the new londo ruins.
I was just smart enough to use the transient curse I found just before the wooden bridge but it didn't help me much!
That grab...so creepy

Lol when i beat those Gargoyles yesterday after trying at least 20 times, i was like "YES! Time to go ring them bells!". So i start climbing dem' ladders, i got to the last ladder which is on this tiny ledge, AND I FUCKING BACKROLLED OF THE LEDGE AND DIED!!!! LOL. Thank god them bosses stay dead, i dont know why i tapped B when trying to climb that ladder. Hilarious either way, so many derp moments like that. I swear i must have lost 30,000+ souls trying to kill those gargoyles, as i died so many times before picking up my corpse.
I love how those tips specifically say to not go in the graveyard. I also died there dozens of times thinking i could kill those fucking skeletons! Fuckers are tough, but i was like, cmon, ive got the skills to kill them......i really dont, and im never returning there ever again lol.

Of course, the really evil trick of the skeletons is + Show Spoiler +Actually, there are a few of them: 1.It's quite doable if you have stats for Astora's straight sword, which is really easy to pick up... if you're stupid enough to see the undead dragon and say "yeah, that looks harmless." [Astora's kills them so they stay dead] 2. If you get killed enough times that you eventually say "fuck it" and run past every skeleton on a mad dash for glory, you're rewarded with Pinwheel, the easiest boss in the game (who drops some cool loot). 3. You can also just grab all the loot in the graveyard without fighting anybody if you run around like a headless chicken for long enough.
