You should have one anyways. There is simply no point in not having a controller as a PC gamer. One of the big advantages of PCs is adaptability. And if a game controls better with a controller, why not just play it with one? Why jump through gigantic amounts of hoops just to be able to do it worse with mouse and keyboard? Is this a thing where people need to not in any way be associated with consoles whatsoever because they are PC GAMERS!!!! ?

1: Get a Controller.

2: Be a pyromancer and level it on the side, even if you don't use it much it helps tremendously when you have trouble against certain types of enemies/bosses (and is not as easymode as a "real" mage because you don't have the ridiculous range) + Big Ass Fireballs and stuff are cool.

Also no int/faith investment which helps for earlier playthroughs

oh yeah theres pretty much no downside to being a pyromancer in ds1 for some reason
even with a shitty pyro hand its really quite helpful against certain enemies/bosses

I actually use mouse and keyboard for DS, just need the DSfix and mousefix.

For me the strongest build (butt it takes a long time to get going) is faith/dex with richards rapier.

Ive been able to kill level 120 pvp users with level 65.

The idea is to get either darkmoonblade or sunspear blade and use it only at bosses/pvp. You also should use vow of silence or tranquil walk of peace in pvp, and if you want to goo full retard mode (my favorite) is to go ultra mode+power within (need the regen shild for that) with darkmoon blade and richard rapier.

Then the damage is so high, bosses die in one volley (even in NG+).

I didn't expect this much discussions: thanks for all the input, everyone!

My responses:

1. I play with an Xbox controller. While mouse+keyboard may be okay, I have a controller.

2. I started a s a thief. I don't use the master key much (because I expect the doors that I open are too hard for me). Maybe I'll start another character as a pyromancer at some point.

I've essentially been putting every attribute into endurance. Stamina seems super important (unless you manage to parry most attacks) so I'm basically putting everything into it until I find a weapon that requires a lot of strength.

Question: Should I be farming humanity in an area before killing the boss? I feel like I should have been using that humanity to upgrade my campfires before beating bosses.

Unless your really munching humanity you prob don't need to farm it? There's a great deal to be found around the world.

The best humanity farming spot is towards the end of the dlc though

At the encouragement of my friends this was the first Dark Souls game I picked up.

While I saw definite improvements in the late iterations, I still have fond memories of this one due to all the fun and silly moments, the rages and several deaths, the laughter on skype, all priceless.

After you apply a fix you can play this with just mouse and keyboard, I did so in all DS games, it'll take some getting used to, that's for sure, but once you've done so it'll feel natural.

There's not much need to farm humanity that way unless you actively use the ones you pick up to heal yourself, which I don't recommend doing save for utter emergencies. Stick to estus for healing and you should find plenty of humanity and dual humanity items to use just when you need to kindle a bonfire.

It is completely irrelevant what you start as. The differences are miniscule, and you can become any kind of character from any kind of starting point.

What others mean with "be a pyromancer" is just "Do some pyromancy when you find some, and level your flame a bit with surplus souls". There is really no disadvantage to doing this. Unlike Sorcery or Miracles, Pyromancy does not scale with any attributes in DS1. The only thing it scales with is the level of your pyromancy flame. So you just need to invest a few souls into levelling it, and it will be fine.

Regarding Stats: They have diminishing returns if you level them over 40, and if you level them over 50 they barely do anything, so keep that in mind when distributing your points. Unless you have a reason to do so, don't level any above 40. Endurance is very useful, so is vitality. Int and Faith are there if you want to use sorceries or miracles respectively, attunement gives you more spell slots, but isn't that necessary either. Early strength and dex do allow you to use a lot more different weapons, so a few points might be nice for a first run just to test more weapons.

Don't farm anything. Use humanity to upgrade your campfires, but you should have enough of it to do so almost always without any farming if you explore and pick up most of the stuff lying about. Every time an area seems to be pretty long, just double humanity and upgrade the campfire.

Oh, and one more thing. Being zombie has (nearly) no disadvantages. It prevents others from PvPing you, and that is about it. There are some (rare) NPC invasions that you miss by being dead, and you can't kindle bonfires. But other than that, just be dead.

Thanks: that clarifies things!

I hadn't been using any of my humanity because I didn't want to waste it. Similarly, I hadn't used any of the "humanity items" that I found.

Somehow I've beaten most of the Undead berg+parish areas without upgrading the one campfire I've been using... But it's gotten a little more difficult because now I have to go up the ladder, under the wyvern, and through all of the parish stuff (undead knights etc) up to the next campfire, which is pretty far on 5 flasks and only endurance upgrades.

Hey, Dark Souls Remastered is out and the game is awesome with so many people playing. There are summon signs everywhere and the bells won't stop ringing. Anyone here playing it? Can't believe no one is talking about it. The game is buttery smooth (no more blight town mess) and it's cross-platform play. Join in on the fun!

Additionally, there was also a really interesting mod released for the not-remaster called The Scorched Contract. For the most part the only modifications to the "world" are a few shortcuts that were rearranged, but the main idea is that after each boss you get some sort of debuff or something happens to the world. There's a list if you don't mind spoiling yourself a bit or want to get an idea (please tag or don't post spoilers in this thread either lol), but it really affects the way you have to play the game and especially fight bosses. I'm only to Anor Londo and I've been really surprised a number of times. It's unique, quite a bit of work's gone into it.

Good time to be a DkS1 fan. I was mostly avoiding the remaster because it really didn't sound like enough was new/fresh to make me come back, even with the organized pvp/arena. But just the idea of a busy player base and lots more chaos and invading again might be enough to make me think about it, even if that's only temporary. And half off for people that already own it on PC is a bonus.

Im playing that scorched contract mod and its been a blast so far. Im stuck on ornstein and smough atm... that fight is a little more difficult.

One question I have... how do you get to sif? Andre doesnt sell the key to the seal and the ladder next to the hydra is gone. If this is something that automatically becomes clear at some point, then dont tell me

It's been a while since I did it now but you'll probably unlock it as you progress other stuff. They took some of the sections that are open-ended for the player from the vanilla game and sort of gave an order to them if I recall, so just do some of the other sections you have access to and see if it opens up naturally?

Beat Ornstein and Smough with the butcher knife after about 15 tries I think. My heart was pounding like crazy at the end, love how this mod brings back that feeling from my first time playing dark souls and beating the hard bosses. Regular DS is just not challenging at all anymore . The effect for beating O&S is INSANE though. Read the spoiler if you want to know: + Show Spoiler +
Each boss with a lord soul you kill raises your ng+ level.

I picked up the very large ember now and have a +14 butcher knife. I'm wondering if its worth it to kill stray demon in the asylum for the titanite slab but get hit with his effect. At the same time I think I'll go tackle the DLC before the other bosses now, which means I can pick up the slab from behind Kalameet.

This mod has brought back the big challenge and the mystery of not knowing what's coming next to DS for me, I'm loving it so much

Yeah I guess Ill poke around a bit more, Andre does sell the pendant for 100k, so Im wondering if thats the key now? Dont answer that . Ive killed moonlight butterfly as well but no clues as to how to get to Sif.

Yeah the mod does a great job not just of making things difficult but really making you think ahead about what's next and how you might want to approach stuff differently. I really appreciated it for that. There were still a couple bugs when I did it, it was brand new. Might give it another pass if I have the time and patience in the near future. Any DkS fan looking for not just a challenge but something refreshing and surprising should try and check it out. Like you said yourself, it gives you that feeling of playing for the first time again, thinking really hard about bosses, options, paths to take, a lot of stuff that's just second nature or that you take for granted after you've played it for hundreds of hours.
