I keep mistaking the arrow keys for movement and find myself randomly putting away my axe in the middle of hollows. WTF
And don't even get me started on targeting (locking on) I just spent an hour trying to do so and gave up.

What. A. Disaster. Borrowed a friend's PS4 controller for the holidays, downloaded Xbox 360 controller drivers, fired up DS4 windows, got everything to work perfectly then.... the controls kicked in. How do people even manage to turn with a controller is beyond me. It took me 12 minutes to get to the Asylum fatass up the stairs. I know it's easy enough, but it feels a bit like cheating.

![]() I don't want a walkthrough persay. I would like to spend my time exploring the world, fighting, and dying. But I would feel better if I had tips on some of the bigger concepts so that I don't spend 30 hours trying to get to an area that I shouldn't bother with. I also don't have hundreds of hours to spend on the game so I don't want to have to re-invent the wheel. (I'd rather beat it in 50-100 hours and move on to Dark Souls 2) In brief, I'm looking for a guide/instruction on: - general combat tips - overall ideas/concepts to make the game easier If anyone can link me to a useful guide, or provide me with some tips, I'd really appreciate it.

Personal opinion, but when you're leveling your stats up, only put enough Str and Dex to wield the weapon you want and focus the rest on Vitality and Endurance. Most helpful for a first playthrough. Talk to NPCs and pay attention to the dialogue. They'll tend to give you a hand on where to go earlier on in the game. There's a couple paths that can lead you off track. If you find yourself in an area that's kicking your ass, you're probably not supposed to be there yet (I mean, the whole game is supposed to be "difficult", but you'll be able to tell the difference between tough but manageable and "wow it'll take 10 hits to kill each of these guys this is probably wrong") It's ok to be reliant on a shield when you're newer to the game, but don't be afraid to dodge/roll too. Once you get used to many enemies/bosses and their attack patterns, rolling often gives you more openings to get damage in (and lets you lose the weight of a shield, once you're confident enough lol). Most importantly, and perhaps most difficult, don't be afraid to die. I don't mean that in the cliche "lol you'll die hundreds of times" way, but rather don't be too upset if you die with a lot of souls and lose them. You'll get plenty enough from bosses and as enemies get stronger to make up for any big piles you might lose along the way.

The most important thing that can go wrong for a new player its the weapons upgrades. You can fully upgrade only 2-3 weapons in a normal playthrough so dont waste the materials for upgrade.Weapons upgrades are way more important than armor upgrades.Find a good weapon from the start that can go through all game something like zwaihander or claymore for strength or uchigatana for dexterity and upgrade it max as soon as possible.Dont upgrade weapons that arent usefull in long terms.Have at least one max upgraded with physical damage because the bosses in dlc are the most dificult in the whole game and they have magic resistance.See this guide how troublesome is weapons upgrades in ds1. www.youtube.com

Especially the early upgrade materials are infinite. The only things you really need to worry about are the two highest levels of materials (Chunks and Slabs), every thing else can be bought for souls at some point (and thus farmed). On a first playthrough, experiment with weapons. Look at their movesets, and use a weapon that you like the moveset of. Almost all weapons are viable, though of course there are some that are better than other in maxed settings (they are often not that easy to find though) If you have a weapon that you like, keep it upgraded. Upgrading weapons makes a lot of stuff easier. Shields are good for new players, because they allow you to feel save, and play slow and methodical. Parrying and dodging are amazing once you get used to them, but that takes a lot of effort. Regarding areas you shouldn't go to, as was said before, take a look at how hard stuff is, and if it feels too hard, try going elsewhere. At the start of the game, you should be fighting zombie-like dudes, not skeletons. If you are fighting skeletons, you are going the wrong way (Happened to me on my first playthrough. I stopped for month because i thought "WTF how hard is this game?" You could look up recommended area progression if you feel that you are going the wrong way, but it should not be necessary most of the time (You will miss some areas though, there are some pretty hidden ones) It can be useful to look up bonfire locations. This is one of the things that frustrated me intensely. I often had to redo extremely large areas. (I missed the bonfire at the bottom in blighttown. I missed the bonfire in sens fortress. I was very good at not finding bonfires, and that was very annoying. Learning a boss and having to run two bonfires worth of trash to get to them isn't fun)

The game runs smoother than I thought it would without mods. Also, it seems to play fine with a controller, but I bet it could be frustrating with mouse+keyboard. It seems like I don't lose souls when I die (so long as I go back and retrieve them?) That's not nearly as penalizing as I thought it would be. Maybe it'll be worse when I can't get back to the place I died, or if I die in a place where I can't retrieve them.

For a single playthrough of the game without any PvP aspirations, anything goes. Also, unlike many other games, this game gets easier the further you get, not harder. If you're struggling the first couple hours, but are enticed, just keep at it ![]() For game+'s and PvP consult guides if you dont have many, many hours to spend. Just my 2 cents ![]()

Maybe it'll be worse when I can't get back to the place I died, or if I die in a place where I can't retrieve them. Yeah that's the idea. And you can spend souls to minimize the hurt when you die (always enter a bossfight or new area with 0 souls). But losing all your humanity can really suck (number in the upper right, used to kindle bonfires, become human, and also affects item discovery and some other things). Do you know about the really important items? Like, don't eat firekeeper souls. Bad news if you do. And upgrading is key. You can upgrade basically anything to level 5 if you want to grind a little early on before blighttown, which allows you to experiment easily. Never upgrade armor until your weapon is max upgraded with the upgrade material type. Also, I beat DS1 on PC with M+K, no DS fix, and I'm no beast at these games, so it's doable. But you have to get really good at fighting without lockon.

Like, just a pixel or two of adjustment and you switch targets. If there's only one, you're fine. But with even two opponents, you rapidly flicker from one to the next, which fucks up your animations and movement in a serious way. So pretty much any group of two or more enemies is really hard to manage with M+K without a mod. You can't move properly, can't aim right. So you just have to do it without lockon. Which is easier against some enemies than others. Unfortunately, it sucks for weapons like the rapier, which require a bit of precision in aiming that can be tricky in some fights. But I used longsword to beat all three games, so I mostly slashed, using the thrust in special situations. (For instance, if you string out all the enemies in a hallway or bridge, you can use the thrust, and even lockon since it doesn't fuck up your aim too much. Lockon is also really useful in those situations, since without it you can't backpedal while guarding without it.)
