We are currently deciding whether to start http://tft.w3arena.net/ private server, ICCUP, or keep trying for Battle.net, as Garena has limitations, stay tuned
Edit: Well guys, I'm officially ceasing operations running this thread, if you guys would like make a new thread or group, be my guest
WarCraft III is a good game, tell the truth, im terribly bad at it and when I tried playing someone I got destroyed to oblivion, but still it is a good game, its challenging, and I hate to see it die like this, for goodness sake Brood War is a older game and is still running. So I was thinking if there are any people that play Warcraft III and any other custom games on Garena, B.Net, Bored Aussie, ICCUP, I please ask you to maybe start a stream for the community to see how much of a good game it is.
Note: Im not saying stop playing your other games, play them they are all awesome, but how about we just try it out yeah? There is quite a few people who would like to see this happen, I shall share what information I can from the research I have.
To get the game: You can pick a copy for a really cheap price at most game stores and even ebay, not saying you HAVE to buy it.
Also, I have created a guide in Tech Support on how to setup your PC so you can host Custom Games on Battlenet. If you are having problems figuring this out, check it out: [G] Opening Port 6112/Configuring Firewall for WC3
Looks like you spent too much time on the SC2 forums to be turning on a Flame Shield. I always wanted to try WC3....I only knew WC3 tru the form of DotA(which is overly popular in South East Asia T_T).
I got 1 friend who plays warcraft and hates sc2 (a very conservative gamer :D) so i had to pick it up.
My experience is that the blizzard servers are always plentyful and has a relatively good matchup ladder system. I actually won the second game i played there (under my friends watchful mouth however). The issue with hacks i did not know about, but what kind of hacks do you mean? I think as long as it's populated we just got to assume that the hackers are a minority and just report (if that exists) and move on. Just as on sc2 ladder.
As said its a nice initative and i think its an awesome game. Personally i don't play it too much since i enjoy sc2 and broodwar too much, but still. the blizzard ladder is pretty occupied and i like to think the better of humanity and say that a minority hacks :D
GLHF
EDIT: Yea, the blizzard forums are hell to be in. I basicly get angry every time i check out that forum since a minority of posts are actually something else than balance whining and trolling. But i guess we are just spoiled with the awesome moderation of TL :D

Thanks for that, and I think the hacks are most likely map hacks and stuff like that.
It has been a while since I was on warcraft 3, I kinda assument that the game would be mostly dead. Tell me that I am wrong! Are people still playing lots of custom games? Or is the custom game list empty these days?
hey guys, i tried bnet, iccup and garena, but i never heard of bored aussie. i'd love to give it a shot, but i cant reply in their apply thread using the guest account (as discribed here: http://forums.boredaussie.com/viewtopic.php?t=50417)
so if anyone registerd would be so kind and post this for me and shortly explain that the guest account is currently suspended: Email: withering@web.de Reason: im currently playing wc3 tft solo ladder on bnet and it sucks. long search times, unfriendly players, hackers and a bad ping. i tried iccup, but the only online player for the solo ladder was me... i'd love to give BA a chance, if BA would give me a chance. thanks in advance!

garena is awesome for tour or leauge games, but BA got a freaking ladder :D
Hey I'm in, I always wanted to play more, the most I ever used to do was 3v3, and 4v4 because I was humiliated every 1v1 game by how bad I was. Haven't played in years, though.
I actually started to play WC3 with some friends again, WC3 3v3 is a thousand times better in every aspect than shitty SC2 teamgames. Even considering the fact that atleast half of the players hack it is a better experience than SC2, and that says something :p
I'd love to play some WC3 if we get some sort of TL group going... I'm about as n00b as they come though, I haven't played it in years and I don't think I played a single 1v1 when I was playing regularly
I have played a 2on2 with a friend of mine two weeks ago and none of us was very good at the game in 2004, and we did not get better at it until 2012. After some stutter step sniper-rifle dudes micro and epic non-hero action without using the spells, we lost. Also, we were lvl 0 and they were lv 26. Not that it means anything, but it kind of tells you that there are not that many players around anymore on battle.net :D
Also, I thought that I could pull off wizard water elemental but I couldnt.
If anyone needs a practice dummy (me) message me on TL or at EU Sc2 Inconsistent.991 Would love to play some war3, as it is a awesome game but I was born too early T_T
I <3 TFT, I used to play ladder quite a bit. I was never amazing at the game, but I did get pretty decent for a while; probably equal or around gold or platinum.
It's been quite a while since I played, so I'm probably not that good anymore. But I would still like to play some games.
Garena is probably the best place to play games these days, ICCup has never been good for WC3, they had huge issues when they started up and nobody wanted to give them a 2nd chance so its a ghost town
Garena has the best players these days, probs, though a lot of pros and such still ladder on Asia.
For Bnet, difficulty goes US West --> US East --> Europe --> Asia. West is a good place to get more familiar at the game without feeling too discouraged. ^^;
In SC2 ffa is not as much fun, but in WC3 it's less of a coin flip, there are really some players that are seriously hard to beat even if opponents go 3vs1

Yeah, I've noticed that ICCup has never had good numbers and I've always wondered why. Plus installing the ICCup client and anti-hack stuff is a bit of a hassle. If we are just looking to play some friendly games against other TL'ers I don't see why we couldn't use Bnet. I trust that no one here is going to be hacking. Plus, all the servers get a pretty good ping no matter where you are.

Guess he means if ppl want to catch him, he'll probs be on SC2 or TL, so it's best to contact him there if they want to play some War3?
If ppl want to meet up on BNet or something (though it seems people are gravitating more towards Garena), we could easily just meet up in a channel named "Team Liquid" on whatever server people prefer.

Yeah I like this idea.
I've never heard of Garena, and I hate these things where you have to download and install third party software. I've got enough random shit software on my PC, I really don't need any more. :/

hmm interesteing, my main problem is I lost my ROC disc but I have my TFT disc.... so if anyone knows a way around it haha even have my TFT profile linked to my battle.net account but not my ROC acount so i cant even download it from there without a cd key
Would love to have a stab at warcraft 3 again.. perhpas ill see if anyone is selling ROC on ebay... doesnt matter if cd key is used as I only need to get it and install and use my tft cd key!!!

I think the problem is that he doesnt have the CD key for ROC anymore => he cant download it from bnet site. If you don't want to pirate the game just buy ROC and TFT for 20$. I know it sucks but better than nothing.
I just realized this got moved to Sports&Games. Was trying to find it in Blogs without any success, lol.
Might pop in sometime once I make a Garena account. I never got around to it since my internet back home was so shitty it didn't matter whether I used BNet or a client like Garena ... I'm afraid once I go to Garena, I'll be unable to go back to BNet too. T.T
@ TheToast: Garena basically cuts down on the lag. If you want to hit me up on BNet, shoot me a PM here and I'll see when I can get to it. Also, whenever I'm on BNet and looking for games or something, I'll try to sit in a chat channel named "TeamLiquid" (no space) in US East. I'm pretty terrible though and haven't played in months. ^^;
In SC2 ffa is not as much fun, but in WC3 it's less of a coin flip, there are really some players that are seriously hard to beat even if opponents go 3vs1
This deserves a quote.
FFA in WC3 is awesome and I played it a ton some years back and even made it in top 20 on Northrend (Europe) at one point without using any hotkeys and strategy guides. I simply made my own build and played it everytime. It was so much fun.
Biggest concern if you plan on playing WC3 is the hackers. I dont know if there are still drophacks out there but if there is you should prolly stay away from the b-net servers. It was so annoying to deal with.
Anyway I strongly recommend you guys to try out FFA. The maps, while old, are still great (well most of them) and you can manipulate your opponents to no end, which can lead to all sorts of backstabbing. Fantastic.

Never thought FFA scene would survive solo and at.. I haven't played FFA actively just played when nobody was around to play with or we were bored of 1on1/2on2.
A few weeks ago I played on eu and in 1on1 I wasnt hacked so far or at least I didnt notice it. But in 2on2 we got drophacked like 3 of 10 games what was kinda annoying but better than before. It seems since the declining in active players on bnet the number of hackers also decreased.
You should definitely check out Waaagh!TV for replays and streams as well. I don't know how much it is used anymore, but back in the days you used to be able to watch every tourney and official progames.

As much as I love SC2, WC3 is my favorite game of all time. I long for the glory years. I'll be about 42 before Blizz releases WC4 but a guy can dream...
To anyone that hasn't played it, DO SO! The smaller scale skirmishes and micro focus make the game a joy to play.

WaaaghTV is rarely used nowadays afaik. It was popular back when most people had no 50mbit internet or just didnt want to deal with fmle. And if somebody provided only video stream a lot of people complained because their bandwidth was insufficient to watch it lag-free. But it's worth checking out. Watching Remind vs Focus right now <3

Same here. I make dryads&bears vs everything and my heroes are always DH, KotG (those roots do pretty well) and BM.
I remember a few years back I searched 1v1 on BA for about half an hour and was unable to find a game despite there being about 500 users online. Look elsewhere if you want to play 1v1 and/or team games, because BA is polluted with bad mannered DotA kids.

I have no idea how we're going to get nine people in the same channel at the same time on BNet. So far, we have PiPoGevy, NexRex, TheToast, TheWorldToCome, zul (possibly if he's fine with a non-EU server?), and myself. We need to find four more people to get up to 10. Hm.

Have we decided that we're going to make it on USEast or which server?

Think the default consensus is USEast, with zul preferring EU. I'm on East, but I don't particularly care which server so long as we can get a clan running or at least people in the channel regularly ...
I'll be waiting in chan teamliquid @ East. Hope we'll get enough people for making a clan.
Also if we start playing on bnet instead of garena you should check out this: WC3DR. With this program you can change the standard delay (250ms) to whatever you want (10-500ms). Read the Readme for instructions how to use it. It should also be added on op.

If it was up to me, I'd still play wc3 over sc2. But wc3 died so hard it's just sad. When I left, there were only hackers left on ladder, and that was when you would find an actual game. All my friends had also left. I had no reason to keep playing. I love to see this post and that people still want to play the game.
IfI find people to play with, I'm always up for it, so count me in.
By the way I was top 100 in 1v1 and top 10 in 2v2 most of the time.
For the record, there are three of us in the channel TeamLiquid all unable to host a game, lol.
PiPo, can you propose a time where we should all meet up and see if there're enough ppl to make a clan? (Maybe send out some PMs and such.) Most of us are on EST, but you're online around midnight for me, so find a time reasonable for most ppl?

Why can't you host a game? Should still be able to do a custom game.
I'll probably be on later tonight (in NA), I don't know if I will have time to play or not (probably need practice first) but I can at least idle in the channel.
Why do people complain about latency and hacks on b.net? I played WC3 for years (quit a few years ago) and my ping was always 20-50 -- way better than SC2 b.net for sure. I cannot remember ever hearing any real complaints about ping. Hacking was almost non-existent, though there was no shortage of losers whining about hacks. Has it gotten much worse, or are you all talking out of your ass?

Delay is totally fine for me on bnet, I havent had any troubles. As for the hackers out of the last 50 games or so I have faced like 2 hackers.

hacking was a huge problem. I remember one day when I got hacked 5 games in a row and with 5 different hacks. After that I stopped playing WC3 for almost a year. I will join that garena group the next time I am home with my PC. (atm being at my gfs home, with no wc3 installed on my laptop.) maybe we can create an irc channel "TLWC3" or something. This should help a ton with coordination.

I had well over 6000 games played and can count the number of hackers I encountered on two, maybe three hands. Even if I may have missed a few, your story doesn't seem right to me. I was probably called a hacker every 10-20th game though, so you'll forgive me when I doubt your story. That is, unless things changed dramatically at some point after I quit.

I'm an advid WC3 player. In fact, I've played the game on and off since 2004. I wouldn't exactly call myself super good at it, but atleast I know a little bit about just about anything that's related to WC3.
ID: "LittLe(D)" on Northrend! (Bad stats are bad, I lost my other main account which was LittLeD due to inactivity)

I love to see this post and that people still want to play the game.
IfI find people to play with, I'm always up for it, so count me in.
By the way I was top 100 in 1v1 and top 10 in 2v2 most of the time.
Make an account on US East on battlenet and join the channel teamliquid :D
EVERYONE ELSE GET UR ASSES ON AS WELL AND STAY THERE!!
Great games last night guys! Officially orc > all :D :D :D
I'm going to see about getting an IRC setup, I may need some assistance as I think you need a couple of people idleing in the channel to register it with a Q.
I'll also see about writing up a guide later on how to open port 6112 so you can host games on Battlenet (Bnet 2.0 isn't so bad is it? XD) since I know some of you are having issues with that.

You'll have to wait until PiPo gets back. If I'm not mistaken, he's the only one with administrative powers and can't actually distribute them because Garena doesn't allow that for some reason unless you're a clan or something like that. And making a clan on Garena costs cash, I think? Or it costs something ... =X

I played WC3 for years (quit a few years ago) and my ping was always 20-50 -- way better than SC2 b.net for sure. I cannot remember ever hearing any real complaints about ping. Hacking was almost non-existent, though there was no shortage of losers whining about hacks. Has it gotten much worse, or are you all talking out of your ass?
hacking was a huge problem.
Actually what I said was 100% true and not an overstatement. Sure, sometime people were blindly accused to be a hacker for creepjacking, which most of the time was just good timing/gamesense.
But the hacks I encountered were totally different. I remember the building-hack, where your oponent just starts building some structures around your base and those buildings were not targetable. therefore you were trapped and had to play something like 1base air, which in 99% of all cases did not work. Another hack was the goldmine-into-farm hack, where an enemy worker came to your goldmine and transformed it in a farm as soon as he reached it. o.O gg. Then there were drophacks and if your opponent, who you just owned in a battle, writes "good bye noob" and all of a sudden you disconnect, do the math. Also very funny, a hack where your mouse cursor is forced to be stuck in a corner of your screen. Last but not least there were maphacks and you could see that your oponent used it when he clicks on your buildings through the Fog of war, without ever having scouted you.
well, if we can get a small community going, players can feel free to learn without being subjected to hacks. there is already a community for decent players out there.
ill teach anyone a build or two, and explain a few noobie concepts. just pm me here, or frankmcdeez on bnet.
Come chat with us about WC3!! To access IRC, go to http://www.teamliquid.net/irc/ and change #TeamLiquid to #TLwarcraft, enter a nickname, and you are good to go!!!!
Also, I have created a guide in Tech Support on how to setup your PC so you can host Custom Games on Battlenet. If you are having problems figuring this out, check it out: [G] Opening Port 6112/Configuring Firewall for WC3
Also, I'll be uploading some screenshots from the games we played the other night!

We were trying to get a clan setup on USEast, but so far we haven't been able to get enough people. I think we are probably going to be playing on Garena mostly going forward, but try joining #TLwarcraft on IRC, you might be able to find some people looking for others to play some games against. As we get more people involved and in IRC that should get easier as we go
I'll be on US East tonight for a few hours (probably 8:30ish to 11:00ish EST) if anyone would like to get some games going. Find me in channel: Teamliquid or #Tlwarcraft on IRC. Hopefully we can get some games going so I'll have some more screenshots to share!
Think I'll pop in tonight if I get enough work done. If I don't, have fun, peeps!
... though regardless of if I'm busy or not, if you get enough people to do team-games, someone hit me up on IRC or PM me or something, because I'm a team-game whore of the worst kind.

It's really difficult to get games in the group. Everyone signed up for this but barely anyone plays. For this whole time, I could get a single game. People, where are you? Why are you not playing?

What time are you on? You kinda need to catch people when they have time to play -- there are quite a few ppl just idling in the channels/groups and such -- and you also need to find people who can host, since not everyone can.
I'll be online more once I'm done with exams (all of this week), but I can't host, unfortunately.

Djagulingu, this thread was actually a blog before and was then renamed. So the "Let's Play WC3" thread has only been up in Sports and Games for less than a week. I think the amount of interest we've been getting so far is really good for that amount of time. I've also seen new people in IRC just about every day since I set it up on Thursday. So I'd say be patient and keep checking IRC for people interested in playing. I think we'll get this going strong, but it's going to take some time. Stick with us

It's true, we need our necromancer master training to finish. And that takes a long time.

Lol are you kidding me? Hacking has been dominant in the last years of wc3. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was a considerable factor to the death of w3. I remember in the very last games I played a year or two ago, they built like 5 necropolis in our bases with an immediate scout, then they had a maxed army 2 minutes after that with 3 heroes each. I don't even know what hack they used, but it sure ruined every desire to play ladder for me.
That's not even counting the countless disc hacks. You can't even count how many of them there were. I think the last one had to do with sharing your units with your opponents or something.

I remember once when I laughed hard at someone trying to use disc hack on me. Game starts, he says GG, I get huge lag and it seems like I'm going to DC but I just wait it out. The game then resumes as normal and the guy DCs instead.

Yeah, well, I wrote it when I was still pretty bad. My prime came a bit later and even then I didn't give WC3 enough time to get really high. But I did follow it religiously, watched all tournaments (WaaaghTV was the single most awesome thing to ever grace RTS, ability to obs pro games yourself, looking at whatever you want atm?) and tested a lot of things and gathered quite a bit of experience this way.
I wish I could find my basic guide for surrounds etc. I believe I posted it somewhere on TL.net and it was the most enlightening thing for me when I saw Grubby teach this to his friend (and also, why you had to remap "Move" to "Q" because it's the most important key).
Brief summary:
You can test it out yourself, because it's only good when you see it (someone could do it and post screenshots).
Start a test game and go Orc (it's easier to see what's this all about with Grunts as they're so big).
1. Build 4 Grunts and a hero (or 5 grunts). 2. Put hero in the center and spread 4 grunts around the edges of the screen. 3. Select all the grunts, press "move" command once and click on the hero. 4. Spread grunts again and this time issue "move" command twice (Q, Q, click) and see the difference.
Best key mapping (you can do it yourself by just editing the keys.txt file in your WC3 dir): QWER ASDF ZXCV
Do it for every menu. You then get Q - move, A - attack, S - stop, ZXCV - hero and unit skills (Z, tab, Z, tab, Z is pretty damn easy for tripple nuke), Z - build (for workers), you then can build early stuff nicely and even if you forget some shortcut you can just take a quick glance on the grid and you instantly know what key it corresponds to. Save time, be more efficient!
P. S. Imba gay HU vs UD strat for the brave: rax + lumbermill + altar make footies, go towards UD base with footies + militia, buy Firelord on the way, tower rush with footies + spawns. Get defend if you see fiends.
you only need 4 units to surround, and q doesn't work if you play elf, or human (or in some cases undead) or rather, if you play elf, or human and move command is q, you need to reset build quill beast on the beast master to a new key.
also, speaking of WTV, I am still a broadcaster for that, if it is still active, and can provide that service if ever need be. I also run my own group, so I can invite others to be able to broadcast.

You're surrounding 1 unit with 4 (that's why you build 5), it's just to show the difference between one and double-move. Q doesn't overlap as ideally you want to remap everything so even beastmaster has his skills under ZXCV.
And on a sidenote, you can surround with 2-3 units just fine under certain conditions (terrain blocking, wisp well building etc.).
I guess Manit0u's talking about something like the SC2 grid layout. I'm not too big a fan of it in either game, because of how I hit my Shift/Control buttons, but I won't lie, having to reach for M is kind of annoying at times. :x
By grid layout (haven't really played SC2) I mean your keyboard reflecting button position on the GUI. It feels strange at first, but after a couple of games the advantage of having everything close together becomes apparent. Just need to swap attack and patrol I believe. Q (move) and A (attack) will be your most used keys anyway (after 2 years of playing WC3 I practically stopped using right-click completely, just to set waypoints and shift-select focus target priority), then there's Z (first hero skill, first unit skill and build order for workers) and S (stop). All of them nicely close together.
A and S being the only ones that don't fit the grid (A would be patrol and S empty) but they're still close and way too natural for attack and stop to change them.

You definitely should try out one thing: 3x Orc, SH first with wards + mass grunts. You can eliminate first enemy practically right off the bat. Triple wards are really awesome support for your meatshields and when SHs start hitting lvl 2-3 it's almost impossible to stop this kind of rush. You can also add some towers to this, one guy should be teching (for some witch doctors) and one just spamming grunts out of double rax.
Unorthodox strats, best strats!
(just please don't play 3x NE with PotM, KotG and hunts, basekill strat... so gay...)

Basically it, and guys, it would help if everyone was more active or atleast in the chat channels so people can stay and not leave
I'll also use this thread to share good VODs. Like this one. Nail-biting action packed game until the very end.
Not really. The caster is constantly repeating just 4 things "I believe", "probably", "nice", "no". It appears that the caster is not knowledgeable enough to do it, his predictions are mostly wrong and his english isn't all that great either. To clarify some things for people who watched even the first 10 minutes of the VOD: I've been away from the scene for quite a while now so I can't say who's top at the moment, but the guys in this VOD (who are announced by the caster as top players) are nowhere close to what I consider "top". Top players in most RTS games are discerned by the amount of mistakes they make during the game. Less mistakes = more pro. This guys make a ton of stupid mistakes that shouldn't happen at the top of the game.
I know that most of the old pros left and most likely there was some kind of void to be filled at the top of WC3, but really? This guys?
As much as I love WC3, this game was pretty boring, uneventful and full of dumb mistakes. If those mistakes would be avoided this game should have ended a lot sooner.
For comaprison:
If shit doesn't happen in at least 3 places all over the map simultanusely, it's not that pro...
Like I said, it's been a while But somehow this newer players don't seem to have this "omg" aura around them. I'll definitely watch more vods to check it out for sure as it's dumb to really judge anyone by seeing just 1 or 2 games.
Edit: btw. does anyone remember this game between Grubby and FoV on Echo or Plunder Isle (or whatever this 1v1 small map was called) where the game was decided by UD death pacting or not death pacting the shade at the time when TC stomp was killing said shade (this shade being the only non-hero unit alive and both players being completely mined out)? This was SO epic!
Lawliet placed top 8, losing to Moon 1-2 Believe placed top 8 losing to LyN 0-2 (damn ud vs orc matchup) edit: sorry, that was the year before he lost to LyN, he slept in during this years qualifiers
dont know how much closer to top you would like these players to be xD

Not really. As long as you can survive until T2 in a reasonable shape you should be fine. That's when you start getting your shades and BM needs to burn a big chunk of his income on invul pots as you nuke him to death the instant he comes near.

On certain maps, namely tm, if the bm gets one exp tome, you lose (that's also true for hu/orc, am level 3 means you lost 2burrows). One the rest, if he gets 2claws, you also lost the game. Crits will simply two shot your lich.
You can always go DK/CL vs O and mitigate BM's crits this way (CL/DK + fiends was standard vs O for quite some time). Or even DL and put BM to sleep, removing him from the fight for a couple seconds periodically. Nukes are nice but they don't work so well vs O due to most of their units being pretty strong, it's sometimes a good idea to get utility instead.

Problem with undead is that undead has less utility and more nukes. If it wasn't for those little twerps called spirit walkers, I could also cripple and/or curse BMs and rape his dps that way.
By the way, is DK+Ghouls a viable strat vs orc or should i go dk+fiends? Fiends always seem to come out a little bit late and i get fucked if I go fiends and orc goes early bm+grunt pressure (what st1tch02 did to me in every single god damn game).
you can go anything you want and win, to be honest, like almost literally everything. you could win with dl guls, or tavern hero fiends. its possible to win with anything and everything. of course the standard strats are powerful for their ability to naturally counter most other strats.

I see what you did here. Watch this video if you understand german. + Show Spoiler +
In case did not understand this: This is why Khaldor was a legend in the german wc3-community.
DK/Ghouls is viable if you get fast destros and eventually switch back to fiends. Lategame ghouls are completely useless since they die in two hits to BM.
So far my games have consisted of: - some 2v2s with a semi-newb like me against the computer, that we managed to win with some crazy strats - some obsing on some pretty good guys playing - a 1v1 OvO I won, with him going SH first with quick wyv (:S), got him with some BM harass, minor skirmish into an attack with grunts/raiders. Raiders coming in with ensnare as his wyvern was coming out was major pwnage xD - a 2v2, O/UDvsUD/UD (me O) that we won - another OvO where I went FS first and I got dismantled so badly... (all luck must come to an end) - me deciding to play UD for a bit (I loved UD, it was my off-race). Played against a Random, noticed he was UD too late, got my ass kicked...again.
I know it's one of the hardest races, but I'm thinking bout focusing on playing UD for a while (I main Orc)

Half of ud's dps is lich + orb, you simply lose the game faster, and you'll auto lose with a dl unless you're doing megacheesy double rax full ghouls on ei and pray that he doesnt scout :p
This is my first UDvNE. Lol. As I don't know any creeping patterns about this map, I just sucked. I forgot t3 as well, but the crushing blow was... well, just watch the replay if you wonder.
I see Warden + Panda vs ghouls. Been there, suffered that.
Edit: Oh yeah, my favorite Orc strategy. BM is gay, FS is where's it all at! I must say I like to abuse FS vs UD, potion of invis -> kill acos, staff/tp out. And it works well with wyverns too.
I've just ordered warcraft 3 and expansion after being encouraged by soem of the links posted and I'm wondering when are the times most of the teamliquid wc3 community is on battle.net? I hope to get good with a race and then start being crushed by fellow TLers
I'm up for some Garena action now. Got patch 1.26a - PM me here or join #TLwarcraft.
I literally haven't played in for ever. I was building some stuff and wondering why I had so much gold.. It turned out I completely forgot the altar, because SC doesn't have that I was just building rax and supply.
practice the dk, naga, lich, 3 fiend, 2 stat, 6 ghoul, 1 destro strat as much as possible vs elf and human, its a great way to practice macro and micro throughout the entire game since it relies so much on pressurinf your opponent and making decisions in the mid game bases on the opponents moves.
it works with dk, lich, dr as well, but the naga is more micro intensive.
The best way to get maps is through the replay links, for example any replay on WCReplays.com that is not in the map pool should link back to a map pack, or a direct link to a map.
Ohhh memories... I remember when I got the beta for this game and I was so excited. I was pretty decent back in the day but immaturity really stopped me from getting better. I still followed the scene for years after I stopped mostly playing.
Here's our TL tournament from over 7 years ago, now!
Aether at the time was a big name, and Orlandu was certainly a rising star. I made it to the semi-finals but got swept by Aether. I remember I could have taken one game off him but I choked pretty bad.
A couple years before in the TFT beta, I had beaten Aether 3-2 (who was then #1 on the beta ladder as a random player) in the finals of this tournament that was a bitch for me to get to... I had to play this one guy twice at one point because no one believed I beat him the first time! Everyone bitched at me hard because I tower rushed in the last game vs. Aether, close positions on Turtle Rock HU vs. NE. It was a "KOTH" format (where I was the first king) and I got challenged and lost a couple days later... lost 1-3 to a known USEast human player at the time, but I can't remember his name (I think Faluzure?). It was a very disorganized tournament, but still memorable for me! A brief moment in time that probably wasn't recorded on any War3 sites; but I will always remember it!
I played through the War3 campaigns a couple years ago since I had no internet for a while; it was a lot of fun and brought back memories.
Have you guys thought about trying to get some old war3 pros do a $50 showmatch on war3 or something for laughs. I'm sure many of the sc2 pros who were former wc3 players would do a fun showmatch for laughs for people who aksed for it.

With UD you often feel like fighting an uphill battle, but usually if you can get past the critical stage you tend to steamroll your opponent. If you didn't know, UD is the only race in WC3 capable of going 1v2 and coming out on top (there've been a lot of 2v2 strategies involving one guy getting nothing except the hero and just feeding money to UD who would roll over enemies). I must say that it even happened to me once, where I was playing RT and my NE partner dropped instantly. I still managed to win against O/NE combo (took me a while though).
Hey guys I saw this thread and was wondering if anyone would be interested to play a custom map called Azeroth Wars : Legacy Reborn. (It is very similar to Dark Ages of Warcraft to anyone who may have played it) It is a custom map and it revolves around 12 factions, each player being a specific faction and starting off with it. It is control point income based, but abilities and such are unique to its own races with pretty good balance.
This is a bit of advertising, but I really do enjoy this map and I hope that others might find interest in it as well. The bot's name is: Lhot-awlr and it can be found on US East and Europe.
The map discussions are found at diplomunion and it is a much smaller community than that of TeamLiquid, but it has things like News bulletins, discussions, and others that I hope people will visit other than things like TL. While I do visit TL every day (Every 15 minutes ^.^ but I do enjoy being with a smaller community sometimes and while there's some people that are a bit much than others, but I think it's not a very hard community to blend into if you have your own opinions.
Once again, sorry if this is advertising another community, but like I said, I really want this map to become more popular and people contribute more for the map to be better. Thank you~
Undead is widely regarded as the weakest race on a competitive level, but as long as you don't want to go pro, UD is strong enough to win.
I'd say the number one problem as UD is controlling tempo, but the only problem this is huge against is orc, and blade master denying your creeping. VS elf and human you should be harassing, and vs ud its a mirror matchup.

Well, what screwed up this match was the fact that he got his acolytes killed twice. Undead with statues and a couple of destroyers can be hell for orc.

Hardly possible. I (and I guess some other people too) have no idea where my original CD's are so I don't have my keys and I lost them even before bnet 2.0 so I didn't get to add them to my blizz account. So, playing on bnet (and joining a clan there) is not really an option for me at the moment.

At the moment, I think most of us are congregating on Garena and either using the chat system on Garena or IRC to coordinate games. I still wouldn't mind having a clan on BNet though if we can get enough ppl to log in, esp. for those who don't want to play with a third-party software.

Also, that Orc player was good!
IMO, FoCuS is the best Orc player still left in Korea atm (esp. since Lyn's in China). I like his style too; he doesn't go BM all day every day like some other Orcs (*coughLyncough* though, okay, I'm still incredibly fond of Lyn too).

On April 02 2012 16:48 TheWorldToCome wrote: Hey this is a random question but I never followed the war3 scene, but who was considered the best wc3 players from USA?
North America never really had any "big" stars. WC3 never became big there. I recall 2 good human players. Sonkie and a player who played for mTw but I can't remember his name. :/ Neither really ever did anything big tho.
Then there's also an american who got a WCG silver medal. But no one really followed the NA scene cos it was quite insignificant compared to the European and Asian ones so I guess you'd have to ask one of the SC2 NA pros who were "semi-pro" in wc3 (there is a suprising amount, Axslav for example)
The top us players I can think of are Shortround, nilknarf and Longwalk, who were good during their time, but the US overall was never on the level of EU, KR or CH really
On April 02 2012 16:48 TheWorldToCome wrote: Hey this is a random question but I never followed the war3 scene, but who was considered the best wc3 players from USA?
shortround definitely. He played wc3 in the early days (his prime was 2004-2005 iirc). However, he never won anything big, loosing just to the world's absolute best at the time and finishing 2nd-4th in tournaments like WCG and one of WEGs (which was the last real big tournament of wc3 in korea). He was one of the reason the mass-dotts-strategy became so infamous when he defeated grubby in the semifinals of a WCG; I remember the game on tm where grubby was killing his heroes over and over again but still lost in the end. Grubby proceeded to rage in a forum about how imbalanced ne vs orc is (yet this was some time ago, so my memory might cheat me). Also he had one moment of genius when he was casting rejuvination on a sapper before running it into a number of spirit towers at a WEG.
first shortround, second canuk, third nilknarf, fourth longwalk, fifth kiwikaki, sixth axslav, in order of popularity by time. although longwalk competed for a long time and on LAN, these other guys were more relevant online.
Found this like twoish weeks ago and promptly forgot to share it until now. This is Sky's youku channel, which includes him casting games played by others as well as him commentating his own games as he is playing and explaining his in-game thought process. (He talks really fast, for the record.) It's not so useful for those who can't understand Chinese, but if you can, it's a great resource for HU play. If not ... well, at least you get some FPVOD of Sky playing?

You forgot Wizzard with his ugly lucky pants, he was really good and the best USA player besides Shortround imo. @mafe Well, what Shortround did was not only showing mass dotts, the biggest issue was that he showcased how fucking imbalanced Firelord+Panda were at that time, which was the main reason why he won those games and why NE won many games they never deserved to win. Especially drunken haze was so imba at that time.

I never wanted to say shortround was just a one-trick-pony. I just mentioned this event because I think after these games against grubby every non-nightelf-player cried "imba" if he didn't do so before. If you can name a more memorable game/series of shortround than this or the bo5 against GoStop (iirc, the other match i was referring to), than go ahaed and make us happy, preferably with some vods. (the WCG-finals against Sky were just plain stupid, he simply got outclassed, end of story)

From what I recall, I think Moon majorly popularized and reinvented the strategy, turning it into the variation that's seen today, which isn't the variation that was necessarily used years back.
I just checked Wiki. Apparently mass dotts was actually initially invented by magicyang (Chinese NE).
I might actually go re-buy WCIII for the 10000000th time, hehe. Keep losing the damn CD keys!
Honestly I prefer WCIII over SC2 (can't say much about BW because I don't have a ton of experience with it), because it was my first real RTS, has a slower pace, better story (in my opinion; at least, it struck home to me), and was the first pro-scene I payed attention to.

Well I believe there's a channel on Garena, also #Tlwarcraft on IRC. Not sure how active either of those have been, I've been pretty distracted with other things lately...
I've been messing with UD lately when I've had time, and I was wondering what's the ideal army composition? DK, Lich, x fiends, y stats, z dests. Not sure what to fit into x, y, and z. Is it better for UD to bank at 50, or break 50 asap and bank at 80?
Also, while playing HU FE style, I find that I wind up floating a ton of gold even when I'm making footies constantly, with a shortage in wood once I hit t2 casters. What should I be using as my "gold dump"? (Hilarious recent HU mirror replay for you guys btw, where 2 rax with 5 foots queued up on each by Sky just barely keeps gold low, hahaha: http://w3g.replays.net/doc/cn/2012-4-6/13337532760493877558.html.)
Hopeless with Orc, ironically enough. I just can't play BM. FS is fine, but the low dps, slow, fat grunts frustrate me to no end. Props to all you guys who play Orc. -.-
This also makes me feel absolutely dumb since I've had this game for forever, but I just realized War3 had a control subgroups option in the ... well, Options menu. No more of that control+click crap, just control+command. Mind blown when I discovered this.

So I either played a fake EG.Happy or the real EG.Happy. He said he was the real one but why would he be playing on US East Coast? Either way he destroyed me, lol.
Also, Blademaster shits on mass dragonrider, apparently. It takes like zero damage and with the ranged orb just makes them die, it's stupid. I think it's a good build though if you transition into sorc / priest / breakers, or at least mix them in.
Anyhow, good to be playing this again! My handle is jeeeeohn on East Coast if you guys see me on. :D
Piercing damage generally does the least damage to heroes, and especially one with such high armor like the BM, Hawks will tickle him. You need something else to compliment this army, also generally you shouldn't be going GA High Tech air units without committing to that strategy.
Generally if you want air, you need to do a more standard fast expand with mass towers and tech hard to Tier3 for Tri-Hero + Gryphon +Dhawks. Otherwise you won't have the money to maintain your army, or have minimal map presence off a 1-base economy which means you will be severely outcreeped, Super BM = you dead. In the meantime your goal should be to creep with militia if you want standard Archmage WE, otherwise AM+MK Blizz+Clap will allow you to harass his peon lines immensely. You'll be in low upkeep so you can spend $ on spare TPs' to harass him, with this tactic you can also incorporate Tier2 casters off 1 Arcane Sanctum. A priest or two to heal, and Sorcs+Invis for the harass. Standard also would be to get a Blacksmith asap after beginning tech to T2 to get Air Armor (Counters Batriders) then you can add a 2nd BS for Attack if you so choose. 3rd hero choices are up to you, either Bloodmage (Banish is amazing. Bolt + Gryphon fire = Dead as hell Blademaster) or Paladin with Heal.

Well, I'm playing 10 games as each race (warming up before I play you guys >.<, because I sucked then and I suck now). Currenly on UD at the moment. I went 2-8 as human (blah), 5-5 as Orc, and I'm currently 4-0 as Undead, which was my main race when I played years ago I think it's more indicative of the matchmaking system than me being particularly good, but whatever. 4 wins in a row is pretty impressive no matter how you slice it.
That's a good point about piercing damage and heroes. I discovered this in my last UD game vs an orc, when I went mass gargs (because he inexplicably thought massing grunts would work...these are the people I'm playing, lol). I had to throw in a lich and like 10-12 ghouls after I teched and got my expo up just to hold off his BM.
Something I definitely need to work on is my micro. SC2 has definitely helped me just because it's 10 times as fast as Warcraft 3, but I still should take a more active role in battles instead of just watching the pretty lights. I am focusing my targets more effectively, but after that I kind of just micro my hero around and forget about my main army. I'm just lucky that in most engagements I've had either a better unit comp or better upgrades or both.
One hilarious game as Orc: I was playing against Human, and I was behind the whole game. I attack his expansion and he leaves all of a sudden. I watch the replay and he apparently he lost his ENTIRE army + heroes to creeps. Needless to say I was laughing my ass off.

My eternal problem.
I toggle between focusing too much on hero micro and losing my army (like you do) or focusing too much on my army and losing my hero. Or focusing too hard on both and losing my second hero. Lose-lose-lose situation. T_T
Sometimes I just skip the second hero anyways (shame on me) because I figure it's going to die, so what the hell. Ugh.

They used to do audio commentaries. You had to sync up windows media player and the replay, haha. It was very quaint :D
i tried for the first time to play wc3 for the first time a few weeks ago and i have a question: is it normal that i feel a huge latency while playing the game ? i heard that blizzard stopped taking care of the EU server, is it true ?
Wouldn't mind trying out learning this game. Never really tried playing competitive WC3. Just played the campaign and spent my time playing custom maps. lol
huge latency? nah, 1-2 seconds usually though. bnet1 is set at 150ms default, so there is at least 1.5 seconds between commands, this was made for 56k fairness btw.

sure, for a fps, in an rts it doesn't mean much, you get used to timing things for delay, especially wc3, where everything has do much hp, and does so little damage.
plus even international competitions have lag around 1.5-3 seconds so training on lan network is almost useless unless you are the top echelon of players.
most people use hosting programs or garena to get sub 100 local games.

well 1-2 sec is huge
It's not nearly so high ... 150ms != 1.5 seconds, it's .15 seconds. If your internet is not shit, you should get around half a second delay through BNet imo. When I have bad connection, it becomes noticeable at 1-2 seconds.
what benefit would .15 delay give to 56k users? they used to run around 250-300 ping normally, or 3 second delay, they imposed the delay so 56k users could still play, as broadband wasn't that huge during the rise of d2, wc3, and bw.
they got rid of the cap for sc2, and wow, that's why the run faster. I think around 50ms is the new standard, and why lan doesn't play like lan.

I just know that I don't get over a 1 sec delay on BNet between when I click move and when the unit moves, and that 150 ms is not 1.5 seconds, whatever it's set at. You're either grossly underestimating how long a second is or your numbers are wrong. 1000 ms = 1 second. To get to 1-2 sec delay, you need 1000-2000 ping, to get to 4 sec it will be at 4000 ping. I myself don't notice any huge diff. between War3 and SC2 delay.
@ jeeeeohn: That tends to happen to people who play Holcan, no matter how much I doubt his math. Though maybe if he played at 5 second delay I might be able to put up a fight against him, lol.
Incidentally, am still getting owned by mass hunt. Idk how to deal with it. As UD, cold towers and tech to T2 and mass gargs I suppose, but until then I lose map control and can barely creep without getting creepjacked a bajillion times. As HU, I kinda have the same issue with the lack of creeping ability until I hit casters/rifs. :/
Maybe 300ms doesnt mean 3 seconds, but whatever 300 ping in Garena is, is about 3 seconds lag, I've hosted for way to many people for that not to be true. They always say that there is "delay" "2 secs" in their limited english skills, but I'm sure they are being generous. Most people can't stand over 250, and I agree, thank god I'm in the hosting capital of the world.
You dont need to creep vs elf, just harass his workers all game until you get 80 food ghouls, gargs, aboms, destro, wyrm? (if bears) fiends (they get a level 5 panda !). You don't really need a lich until tier 3, with an orb, so you can tech before getting her.
can also do rod creeping at other camps, spawn skeleton, scout with one, creep with ghouls with the other. level 2 is all you really need mid game, to snipe a wisp and run away, or heal a dying garg and use the aura to get them away. (etc)

Hmm, the game has definitely evolved and gotten more complicated over the years, haha. Used to be you just focused your game plan around one thing and played defensively (since every race has a defender's advantage). At least, that's how I remember it. Maybe I'm wrong though. I just wonder when my outdated (and slow) playstyle will hit that glass ceiling. : /
That's all awesome advice Holcan, didn't know any of that.
Also, below is the most heroic beastmaster you'll ever see. I was down 76 food to 38 or something and stampede just killed his entire army. It was awesome.
It was doubly funny because he threw out the offensive GG like 8 minutes prior, and spent this battle focusing down the mountain giant, which is exactly what I wanted him to do but never expected, lol. This was a miracle win for sure.

Okay, guess I should try for ghoul/garg opening instead of the standard fiends? (I've been doing standard fiends and rod creeping all my games basically. I thought the point was to get lvl 3 DK ASAP?) When I have 3ish fiends out, they tend to have 4 hunts and by then it's just easy to chase down and surround my shit. I actually defended a huge hunt push in one of my games when he suicided stuff into a choke point at my base with cold towers shooting at him while gargs were producing on top of him, but I didn't know how to take advantage of my ... advantage after that. D:
300 ping = 300 ms = 0.3 seconds. That's just math. I'm not a computer expert, so maybe there is something else screwing it up, but I am 100% sure that 300 ping = 0.3 seconds for roundtrip. :/
nah, vs elf you should almost always open ghouls first.
the standard is to get 22-26 food in ghouls to help in defense, tech and get a graveyard, build fiends, so 6-8 ghouls, dk, 3 fiends, naga sea witch. this is strong enough to tech to tier 3, it is your mid game army, and get slaughter house for some stats for mana and health regen, and at tier 3 get your third statue and destro research, as well as a lich with orb.
this works exceptionally well vs tavern hero builds. and is great for nuking a hero out of the fight if they get out of position.
the basic strat is this. your ghouls counter archers, and naga adds to their dps(no running), you get 3 fiends to counter his dryads, and when he gets tier three and bears you have your destro to steal rejuvs and counter the bears. tgus gives you a mobile army that can bank while denying expansions. if he breaks 50 before you, you can scout and counter accordingly because you will fare fine down food by just running away and nuking constantly.
just remember, if anyone gets an expansion against ud, you are pretty much fucked. oh yea, if you can't get level 2 before tier two, boots for the naga isn't a bad idea.
the other build is ghouls->gargs war of attrition style that I went over earlier. basically you open crypt, altar, zig, shop, zig (or 2nd crypt if you want to ghoul rush).
I'd be happy to show you a couple variations of openings sometime.

Thanks! And no worries. I actually have a ton of replays I ganked off replays.net, so I'll just look those up and copy as best I can. There are only two-three builds with very slight variations as far as I can tell? Standard fiends, TeD fiends, and then a straight ghoul opening with yard @ ~75-80% T2 completion, another crypt for mass gargs, etc.?
Is the destroyer push worth trying against HU anymore? I remember it being pretty popular a while back, but it's pretty much disappeared recently, and I can't even find replays of it anymore.
yea those are the three undead builds, and no destros got nerfed and towers buffed. it can still work, as any strat can work, but the ted fiend strat is done vs human too, stopping them from fast expanding if possible.
Edit: let me clarify before anyone reports this post. I quit playing WC3 because of mass tanks. As an Undead player it's impossible to stop because no unit you have does enough damage to kill them. But even as any other race it's just as impossible. It bypasses half of the game which is army control and engagement. HERP DERP TARGET BUILDINGS WIN IS NOT HOW YOU PLAY THIS GAME. Maybe I should be better. But massing tanks and a-moving into a base is retarded. You read that? RETARDED.
Against tanks as UD: If you're playing on a map with mercs grab a mud golem (for the slow). Also, wyrms help a great deal (again, the slow), and of course meatwagons. Lich's orb is also essential. Oh, and some sacrificial pits for blocking around a gold mine works wonders; they're cheap (at least gold wise, lumber isn't that much of an issue late game) and have a good amount of HP.
As NE, same deal, golem, glaives (though you don't see these often), and talons for faerie fire.
Ok I know I have been posting alot here , but I really need to know , is the garena group active ? I applied over a week ago , I would love to start playing with this community :D

Sim city, panda, lich with orb, frosts, meat wagons. Even ghouls do okay vs. tanks. All of these can help. If they're going mass tank btw, they will basically have no army (as I'm sure you've noticed). You should harass a ton and try to delay his expo early-game and try not to let him get too many towers up; if HU goes T3, you should prepare to get bombarded by tanks since there is almost no other reason to go T3 for HU (except for knights/gryphs, and they're both pretty shitty vs. UD). Really, if you can delay his expo enough, you should be able to kill him before he has enough tanks out if you don't suicide your army into towers.
If you want to practice, feel free to hit me up after next Thursday (lol midterms). No time to play until then, but I'd be willing to play a few games with you, if you don't mind grinding some mass hunt games with me. ^^;

Yup, mass tanks is annoying but you can pretty much stop it cold with ghouls and wagons while your heroes go an a rampage in enemy main. You can then transition nicely into necrowagon which is pretty damn good against HU most of the time (as they can't tower-up in their base and feel safe). The only problem arises when they transition from tanks to gryphon riders (or vice versa), but those you should be able to counter with gargs or destros.
All things considered, ghouls are a lot safer to go for as UD vs HU than fiends. He can't rush you as easily with footies early, if he's just towering and making tanks you're already winning as you just creep the entire map and have ghouls to stop the tanks. You should never skimp on shades vs HU though, this way you can spy any gayness early on.

edit: ok, I downloaded garena+ and sent a request.
I wouldn't suggest going necro wagon against a tier three human, you'll get hard countered by knights, gryphons, priests, breakers and elementals. anyone worth their salt would fast build a sanctum the instant they saw a temple.
I'd say the standard army of fiends, stats, aboms, destro, wyrm, tri hero for offense, and ghouls, golem and a wagon per base.
remember, saving 2 zigs for a tp is a good trade if you kill two tanks. if they switch to gyros, you already have the fiends.

Mass tanks isn't unbeatable, but it's also not a pushover. I swear every time I watch Believe vs. TH000, Believe is getting wrecked by mass tanks, gyros, and a light ground army (tri-hero + 1-2 knights). In the hands of a good player, the harassment potential really goes through the roof, esp. if they are using zeps too.
If a HU gets an expo up against an UD anyways (which is always the case if he's going mass tanks), you're kind of in a tough spot to begin with unless you counter expand and defend well enough to keep your expo.
I can try to organize one, we need to determine the best server for people and what times people are available to meet in a channel to actually make the clan.
If people could just post some info to get a rough idea it would be helpful, then maybe I could start PMing people or something.
Just post your server/bnet ID/and time you are available. So for me:
Server: Europe , willing to create on other servers to play with the TL members Bnet ID: Slicks.Tchado (the account I am currently using) Time: I have a month vacation starting the 27th of this month , so any date/time after that is excellent for me.
Anyone seen this? Hahaha. I'm surprised they're even bothering.
@ Tchado: I'm a HU/UD player, but you have to admit, it's still painful to waste so many hours watching Infi turtle like he's trying to wait out Armageddon.

Was just about to post this here , I am so fucking excited about it , a bnet upgrade for Wc3 is so long over due , if wc3 bnet becomes as smooth as sc2 bnet , I think it might breath some life into the game on the casual level.
I agree man , Infi in turtle mode is painful to watch XD , but it fucking works and that's why he does it.
These 6v6 games on modified maps are really sick. Just the total lack of space and fewer creeps means a lot more constant fighting earlier on in the game; it fixes the 4v4 syndrome of maxed out army collisions (that is, when people don't die to rushes early-game). Total clusterfuck of action and obviously a different metagame...
I would be interested in playing. I am pretty much a complete noob and was trying to learn how play earlier this year (but couldn't really find many people to play with). Is there any sort of consensus on what server people are playing on?
Is there any particular reason people dont like the ICCUP WC3 server? When I tried playing a few games it seemed o so much better than either USWest or USEast.
With insomnia back, Creo back in the scene and XlorD goin fulltime I was reminiscing a little bit and rememberd a game from Moon I think on Turtle Rock, where he trapped a spawning Naga seawitch (I think) with two moonwells and a invisible archer at the tavern. I think it was also this game where he not only mass expanded (like always) but also build buildings like everywhere on the map, which was unheard of at the time. It was a game of a big tournament.
Anyone rembers that? I want to watch that game again :D Watched it with an audiocomment by khaldor and orcish, if I recall correctly.. Those were the times :D

Kinda seems to me you're almost better off watching feRfe for better play, though ofc you don't get the nostalgic "omg insomnia!!!!" feel.
I'm probably going to buy WC 3 and TFT tomorrow and I just wanted to know a couple things. Does the game still have alot of players? Are there alot of hackers where all of you are playing? Is it as apm intensive as Broodwar? And is undead a good race to play (can it win at low levels)?

i remember something similar. It was done with cloak of shadows, an archer and a tree (wtf kind of map has a tree next to tavern?). Pretty sure it was moon too.
I wonder if Rotti or Moon will ever stream some WC3 games. It would be pretty fun to see him play and give some tips lol. I've seen Grubby stream some way back but haven't seen him online in a while
1. Yes, decent amount of players on ladder. If your ELL gets too high though, you might have a hard time finding games. Otherwise, go to Garena or use customs on BNet for games. 2. At high ELL, you will have hackers, probably 1/4 of the time. 3. No. (For context, at pro level, 260 APM is considered average.) 4. Yes. It is conceptually the easiest race to understand imo, and it works fine against HU and NE, but at higher levels, good Orcs can exploit its weaknesses very well. You won't need to worry about balance at lower levels though.

I'd start with reading through this thread from page 1. There have been some good links posted to what you ask.
Ugh, I can't seem to remember or find the YouTube link. It was (10) NE/OC vs (2) HU on Echo Isles (90% sure it was NE). HU went Blood Mage first with rifles, picked up a Goblin Alchemist, and immediately pushed into the NE/OC's main. The NE/OC's hero (Panda?) was completely disabled (Siphon Mana + Banish), while the rifles blasted everything with impunity (Banish + Healing Spray + Siphon Mana). There simply wasn't enough DPS to bring more than a couple riflemen down.

Can someone give a summary of the races? I'm a total beginner and it would be helpful trying to decide which race to play. Maybe it's also good to have something like this in the first post.

Hmm, the races aren't as prolific as they are in SC, but I'll have a go:
Night Elf: Mostly fast and agile units, but low hp. Almost all their units are ranged. Can use moonwells (their supply depots) to heal stuff. Wisps can gather wood from any tree on the map, making them good scouts.
Undead: Has zerg-like creep. Ghouls are both workers and combat units. Probably the race that "masses" the most units. Has the dreaded Death Knight/Lich combo which is very good at sniping heroes. One of the fastest moving armies if Death Knight with aura is used.
Orc: High hp basic units that are costly. Alot of support potential behind their front line as well. Blademaster is probably the strongest hero in the game.
Human: Kinda allround. Good spellcasters, strong hero combos. Tend to have a pretty slow army. Weakest to worker harass but can turn them into militia to help with defense.
NE is mostly "frail" T1-T2, but their ranged units are generally high-DPS, so if you can micro well, it tends to be a very rewarding race, and I'm pretty sure it's universally agreed to be the most flexible race along with HU. (See: Moon.) If you can't micro exceptionally well though, you can still play it by going the bears/dryads route. Just remember to staff every now and then.
UD is conceptionally one of the easiest races to understand imho. Nuke, nuke, nuke enemy heroes ... frost armor your focused units, heal, make sure dispel with Destros, etc. Hardest base to "crack" due to natural defense, but also the most easy-to-harass workers since acos are open-air miners and if you don't block your mine well, you're going to want to put a fist through your computer screen when opponents harass you to death. Very difficult to expand against a good opponent because of this. (You basically have to sell an arm and a leg to build a hall + zigs for def. + haunting the mine.) If you get a mine though, you should out-DPS every army in the game.
Orc is as easy as UD to understand. You basically also have one unit comp. vs. every race, which is walkers, grunts, raiders, kodos + BM and SH/TC. (Spirit link everything, a-move, heal, make sure to hex/ensnare + right-click enemy heroes.) You get automatic map control as soon as your BM comes out of the altar, and you can use BM to glitch units in and out of surrounds and to break into bases. Generally beefy units but low-DPS, which is why the BM is essential as the highest DPS-unit in the game with the proper items. The problem with this race is lack of good healing, which is why shop is so important. Strongest at T2. Burrows are easy to wreck, so you have a lot of strats designed around delaying/hitting Orc just as T2 buildings are going up so your macro is delayed and you won't have enough stuff to fight off the next wave of attack.
HU rewards those who have good game-knowledge and sense of timings. Weak to worker harass but it's really easy to block your base so nothing can get in or out. Don't listen to people who say towering's for noobs ... towering is one of HU's greatest strengths, so don't be afraid to throw down like 3+ towers per base for def. Also you have the ability to power-build (v. useful) to hit timings or to get hero out of altar fast to avoid harass early-game and to mass-repair. T2 casters are really good, esp. with mobile mana fountain AM; just auto-cast slow and heal and focus-fire units, and keep heroes alive. There is no point to go T3 unless you are making tanks or gryphs. Horrible-as-shit orb at T3.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I lied about HU T3. As pointed out, human tri-hero at T3 wrecks if you level up effectively.
i think you got one thing wrong there: at T3, a human can get the tri-hero going, and contrary to popular belief, i believe that human altar tri-hero (as long as you get paladin, mk, and either of the mana heroes) is strongest of all, despite tending to have lower levels. In the super late game, this will even wreck undead tri-hero.
and also, you can play RPG with it too. (check th000)
Oh yeah, HU tri-hero. Can't believe I forgot that.
It's probably because I can't control three heroes effectively, which makes the tri-hero complete shit in my hands, so I don't do T3 often. (Nor have I seen it recently, now that I think about it; even TH000 hasn't been playing it a lot lately.) Tri-hero + gyros/tanks + 1-2 knights for support is effective, esp. vs. UD. Maybe a gryph or two thrown in as well. Tendency towards tiny ground army though.
(Don't play many 2v2s, but I've been watching a ton more of them lately. In general I don't really get to see much HU/HU except for TH000/Yumiko, and they almost always opt for double-AM or AM/MK FE. Double MK seems absurdly effective though, but maybe it's only because there's no DH involved in this game?)

Overall AM is just much safer more comfortable to use more explored and there's less deviations to account for. 2x MK is certainly not bad but it's unexplored, HU generally being considered a weak teamrace to begin with. Not to mention as you say DH is very much a bummer to play against.
If you wanted a potentially bad comparison made up by me on the spot I guess you could say it's somewhat like playing only mech in TvZ. Certainly not bad, but you will find tons of situations in the game where you have no idea where you're at because you haven't seen 5000 replays from it and played 1000 game yourself. And how will you account for broodlords? Overall more tricky less comfortable.
From watching the game, it seems hard to make an argument against double-MK + blm + pally when you're playing against an UD with 2 HUs. That banish + light + bolt (or double-bolt) combo is absurd ... (Almost as absurd as BM hitting 300+ crits? )
Now that TH000 and Yumiko are wrecking 2s, I hope to see a little more variation in the HU/HU play. It seems weird, but even with HU being such a weak teamrace, the HU/HU combo seems pretty strong, esp. with good micro to back it up.
Blizzard should partner with Valve and make warcraft 4 off of dota 2 engine(completely same game, but with better engine, no campaign) that would be super awesome.
I hope you guys are still playin'. I reinstalled this game and I don't want it to be for nothing! Surprisingly, the US East ladder seems to be decently active; I played a couple of games today. My newbishness aside, I actually won a game.
Oh god, that last video you posted. Busted a guy laughing, esp. w/ the sapper vs. kodo micro and the BM-right-click-on-kodo. The last segment with the BM was hilarious too; I was like "wtf..." at the opening to that part first though, but so much lulziness.
Yumiko has a fair amount of highlight vids on his channel. I'm pretty sure they're not made by him, but he does upload them. Other than the 2010 highlights ...
Think there are more but he's got a lot of videos to sort through. I remember seeing a really nice Moon highlight vid, but I can't remember where it went. :/
This game is amazing. The gameplay feels so much more fun than SC2 because you have to move around your army alot more and your first building should be the hero building. It's quite amazing actially :D
Hey guys i just got the game a few days ago ( im a avg sc2 player) and i would like to know where i can find some people to play with / join clan ect.. thank you for the info ahead of time :D
Hey, Black, Dabosaur, we should all get together and play a game or two against one another. I'm on garena still waiting on the group to accept my application, but in the meantime any time I get on WC3 on the US East server I make a beeline for the TeamLiquid chat channel.
Now that Believe is in army and Lucifer's pretty much just dicking around? Ehh. I kind of have hopes for Cechi, eMal, WFZ, and EnTe. And Lucifer, whenever he decides to stop offracing on ladder. TeD seems to have disappeared again.
Before Believe got called to the army, I would definitely have put him at the top.
I'm also not sure who I'd consider best NE atm. ReMinD and (lol) TH000 probably. But we don't really see anything of TH000's NE outside of vHU.
^ Good one. They apparently just have a map rotation, lol.
I just realized they removed Gold Rush from the 4v4 and FFA map-pool. Urgh. I'm fine with the rest going out (everyone almost always immediately left on HI, Slalom was basically turtle-until-frosties, and Friends is an auto-lose depending on who you get partnered up with, but Gold Rush was a pretty good map.
Anyways, is there any reason why Orcs don't typically tri-hero even if they go t3? I was just watching a game where Lyn went BM+SH+TC (granted, against UD), and it struck me that you don't see that very often. I know TC tends to be really, really useless until he hits lvl3 in most cases, but a SH even at lvl1 isn't anything to sneer at if used correctly, so as a third hero, it's not a bad choice. If you're at t3 also, you can expand pretty easily, so that takes care of the upkeep problem. Is the main concern that it's really hard to level up the third hero enough so that the food+resources are worth it?
usually by the time an orc would be t3 there aren't enough creeps left to level that guy up especially on the smaller maps. Usually orc has the strongest T2 so they focus on that, while other races can afford to tech to t3 quicker if they want to do a tri-hero strat. With tri-hero orc it's way better to get TC 2nd then SH but TC 2nd isn't always viable, also when you do get TC you probably want to get him level 5 as level 3 stomp is like broken good vs UD and you need high level shockwave vs dotts so getting a third hero would slow that down. Tri-hero is pretty viable vs UD depending on the map/situation, the only other time orc goes tri-hero is vs Human when you play counter-expand vs Human air, they typically pick up Alchemist 3rd as he has a natural air attack and his bomb has AOE armor reduction is also good vs air.
With WCG coming around, I'm curious; does wcg have a scene outside of china/korea at all? I really like watching the game and don't want to see it die out
People still play this? I'm not good at all but would probably like to join if you guys play... Maybe then I won't have to play 2v2 with my bro against the AI lol.

Usually with orc you try to end the game when sh hits 3 and bm hits 5. If I remember correctly, you'll be hit at that moment (talon or first sorceress/towers) or you'll hit at that moment (against an ud or Orc v Orc). I think the main concern is that your two first heroes are really really level dependent. You're not a NE that can rely on invocation/spells or an UD with incredible burst with three heroes. Welp hope i helped u, i could be wrong bc I didnt play in a long time but it was like that in my time :p

The point of Tri-Hero is that they have to complement each other. That's why human tri-hero is always 1 mage 2 men. Two mage is just lots of useless mana (unless bolt + clap, but that's not effective) In NE vs OC, the demon prevents shockwave, while the tinker and Beastmaster provide a buffer for the dots. UD can do the DK,Naga,Lich nuke combo or the DK,Lich, Ranger nuke silence. Ranger prevents healing, making the nuke more effective.
It's up to the individual countries to set them up. I haven't heard of anything from Korea's side, but I assume it'll happen, since they have quite a few good War3 players still playing, and it'd be borderline insane not to let Lyn play for them.
For the China Wildcard brackets. Fly and Sky were seeded, while Infi, TH000, and JN qualify for the finals of the qualifiers. Not sure how many people they are sending to WCG out of these five though, in the end. (Fly is going to have a blast though. So many HUs.)
If Korea holds a qualifier (finger's crossed, I haven't heard anything about it yet), I wonder if Moon will give it a go.

Speaking of fly and human players , it seems (to me at least) like after all this time he finally figured out how to beat the t2 tower rush for good.
I saw a few casts on SBK's channel recently, fly 2-0 vs infi , both times infi did the t2 tower rush , and fly did something outstanding in my opinion , he went for serpent wards on his SH with a preemptive tower located in a godly position for defense , both times.
I saw that! Lyn's done that a few times as well from what I can tell, but with less success.
Also, keep in mind that Infi's somewhat rusty with his play lately. (Him and Sky both, eh.) Fly did lose to TH000 recently too. We'll see when they play each other again. I think TH000 should be used as the litmus test these days; his HvO has been on a roll lately.
Lyn's been having such a hard time against HU lately, lol. + Show Spoiler +
Lost 2-3 to JN at SW7, lost 2-3 to TH000 at AWC, lost 0-3 to TH000 at G-League like two days ago. Poor guy.
He is diversifying his play a lot recently though, and has been going FS first in quite a few sets. I think he's doing that since FS is actually better at fending off TR than BM, but it hasn't gone too well for him. He needs a NE or UD to nom on or something. I haven't seen Orc vs. a good NE at a LAN in foreverrrrrrrrr.

Lyn going FS ? Lyn made his name by abusing the BM (not that it's a bad thing , dont get me wrong) , but using FS ? this I got to see ! you have any links ?
(Just off top of my head.) There are also a lot of games in the G-League where he went FS first (esp. vs. HU), but replays aren't released for those yet. Check most of the games out here: http://www.youtube.com/user/videoLJS. I feel like I see FS first at least once in every set he's played recently against HU.

speaking of AWC maps , can someone post a link to the map downloads ? I cant find the map pack anywhere , I havent seen a single replay yet
and if it's no trouble , the path (because it seems like I always get it wrong :S )
If you're still having trouble (though I guess this might help anyone else who is confused): I dunno where to dload the entire mappack, but I dload them individually from the replay site. Where you see "使用地图:[mapname]" ... click the greyed-out button next to it. It should extend to "下载 请按地图位置保存[老粉]" and then right-click and save to the path given in the previous line.
Also, AWC team games are happening in like one or two days: Team KR (Lyn, FoCuS, ReMinD, Lawliet) vs. Team China (TH000, JN, Yumiko, Fly). Thoughts/bets? :D

No I dont have more trouble , thanks for the info man ! someone here will definitely benefit.
Damn , these teams are really hard to pick from....it's near impossible :S , but if I have to give a small edge , I would give to team Korea
I'd go with Team KR if Lawliet were replaced with Reprisal, who has been rocking HU mirror lately, beating out JN twice 3-0 and 3-1 in ZOTAC. Lawliet is good, but I think Reprisal has the better results recently, and I haven't heard from Lawliet since he lost to Lyn and ReMinD in AWC (though Lawliet did beat TH000 and JN at the same tourney).
Also, Lyn's w/o a doubt the strongest player on his team, but he's lost to 3/4 of the China team very recently and had a close series with the fourth. But ReMinD is getting back in shape, so I do hope Team KR pulls through. ^^ It's not healthy for China to go unchallenged, lol.
Im greenhit518 on U.S east feel free to add me for games!
Also if anyone can direct me to good Human Vods to learn from preferably with commentary (doesnt have to be though of course) or guides, would be much obliged, just got to 6 rank by beating a 15
Where do most people play wc3 nowadays? Is there ranked ladder like ICCUP that's currently popular for wc3? Also are there any cups still going on(weekly/daily or w/e)?
Also i've read somewhere in this about some AWC team games, is this some kind of tournament, and when can i watch it.
Yumiko > FoCuS Yumiko > ReMinD Yumiko > Lawliet Yumiko < Lyn Fly100% < Lyn JN < Lyn TH000 < Lyn China 4-3 Korea. Thanks, Lyn, that could've been otherwise very one-sided.
Replays are here: w3g.replays.net (click the latest ones tagged AWC)
VODs aren't out yet, though they should be soon. I'll link to them when I find them.
@ Silencioseu: Most people these days play on BNet or Garena or (if in China) VSClient (which is like Garena, but it's more difficult since all the pros play on this one these days; don't bother with it unless you live in Asia though, as the lag is horrible). ZOTAC Cup is weekly, but it is one of those "don't expect to get far unless you're at least semi-pro level." (You have people like JN, TH000, ReMinD, FoCuS, Reprisal, Lawliet, etc. competing in it regularly.)
ALSO: For all you UD players out there, a ton of Believe VODs were just released. Over 100 games apparently, some never before seen. Someone is uploading them all to Youtube. Have fun.

But is Garena ranked? And where do people play 'cause all i find are dota rooms, even in the TFT section, and is really annoying me. Also In what regions in b.net do most people hang, and will i have alot of latency if i play on the US(generally in US servers i have 250 ping, is it bad for wc3?)?
All I encounter are angry, extremely bad mannered Eastern Europeans with barely any English whose computers take literally 15 minutes to load the game.
Garena isn't "ranked" per se. Leveling up allows you to enter higher-leveled rooms with better opponents though, so you play fewer newbies and such. I haven't used Garena for a while, but you can try trawling through the rooms or finding groups of War3 players to play with. I think WCReplays is usually pretty decent for finding practice partners, and it looks like the War3 Reddit community is pretty active these days too (more newbies though?), so you can try that as well.
I think we have quite a few people in USEast playing ladder. I would suggest just giving the different servers a try; you never know, your lag could be manageable. Coming from SC2, the lag will probably be noticeable even if you're playing on your own server. Anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 second delay is normal even with good internet.
(Garena is no-lag LAN mode btw, so it's more enjoyable to play on Garena, but if you can't host games or don't have practice partners already it can get pretty annoying ... kind of like iCCup, I guess, lol.)

The thing is that, i can BARELY find any games for wc3 in garena even on Europe room 2(which i have been told is the go-to room for wc3?). I played a couple of times though.
No qualifiers were held. The top three players from last year were chosen to represent KR in the WCG. Yes, that is Moon, Lyn, and ReMinD. There are quite a few fans angry about the lack of chance for players like Reprisal, Lawliet, Lucifer, FoCuS, etc. to prove themselves.
I'm not sure what this means for Moon. He's stated before he would prefer to play War3 at WCG, but unless it's stipulated in his contract, I don't see it happening.

Would be cool to see him in WCG playing War3 though. However I'm not sure how much practice he's actually gotten.
Lack of qualifiers is a shame though.
Moon will always be the best (or at least alongside Sky and Grubby-of-the-past).
Moon and Lyn came back to WC3 for a few weeks and won the qualifiers in 2011. Lyn won the whole tournament. WC3 never leaves your system.
Yeah I know about that. The funny thing was that he was here in our country playing an SC2 event a week before the WCG qualifier finals and he placed 2nd in that.
Yes, I would've liked to see qualifiers. Lawliet and Reprisal have been playing so well lately, and ofc, Lucifer is one of the few UDs left standing. Nevertheless, Lyn and ReMinD probs would have made it through. Moon, if he takes the spot, got really lucky with this break.
Moon would probably need ~2 months prep time at least, full-time War3 before he even has a shot of winning.
After watching WC3 VODs for a week I'm regaining my interest again. Use to be an UD scrub who always went mass fiends with CL when I played 2v2 with a mate of mine.

As a Wc3 community we should send friendly emails to fnatic asking Moon to play Wc3 in WCG this year , and maybe hint fnatic to let him do it :D
Seriously , Moon needs a WCG title , the only major tournament he never won ?
and no qualifiers WTF ! that's bullshit , it wouldn't cost OGN much to hold one anyway , not much players and not much airtime to begin with , and the players mentioned above (Reprisal, Lawliet, Lucifer, FoCuS) deserve a fucking chance.

He's still active in Wc3 , and since he is the reigning world champion at the moment , there is no way he wouldn't come back this year to defend his title and possibly get into the WCG hall of fame alongside Sky & Grubby.
Lyn is playing War3 way more than SC2. He played his last tourney ~2 weeks ago, placed 1st in that one, 3-0 over TH000. I actually don't know if he has played in an SC2 tournament since he moved to DK (even though they said he was full-time SC2, haha). Apparently he was in the hospital last week, but I think it was just food poisoning ...
A bunch of fans (including me ...) have already asked Moon if he's playing, but he's choosing to politely ignore the questions, lol. I half-want him to return, but on the other hand, I'm not sure how well he can play, esp. with such strong competition, and I don't want to see half-assed play from someone like him. Not practicing SC2 for two months would set him back immensely, but not grinding out War3 would see him completely slaughtered. Even though the competition's nowhere near as tough these days, players like Lyn and Fly100% are beastly, and all China's HUs are very strong. Not to mention ReMinD, who can out-mirror Moon even if Moon's in good shape.

Your analysis is outstanding , and I have to agree that playing wc3 this WCG may not be a good idea for him career and performance wise....but the little moon fan inside wants to see him win a WCG
I believe time is still in his favor , he might win a WCG in sc2 someday , if somehow the moon of 2005 & 2007 claws his way out , I think I will qq alot as a terran player because he might break TvZ

Luci's doing fine, I think GTR is just commenting on how he won't get a chance to go for WCG. Tbf, Lyn would probably destroy him, but he and the other players deserve a chance.
Especially when you consider that KR really only gets to send one rep this year (according to Lucifer in this interview, note that this was released on Aug 21 before the announcement that KR decided not to hold qualifiers), so Moon, Lyn, and ReMinD still have to play games afaik to determine who to finally send? I'm still waiting on news from this front.
I'm not sure if Russia is holding any quals. I'd be shocked if they weren't given their fairly strong player pool (Nicker, Hawk, Cash), but given what just happened to KR ... =_=

It's not your fault, if there was enough will the community would have formed on its own. Unfortunately it seems that there just isn't enough interest in wc3 anymore, which is too bad since it's such an amazing game!
This thread caused me to get a new interest back into wc3 though! I have put in about 300 or so games since this thread was created and now find myself playing more wc3 than sc2 haha. I think if we were to get a battle.net clan going it would help a lot - but it seems like time zones are too much of an issue.
I occasionally play with people when I see them on. Haven't really gotten a lot of games in though. And still learning the basics as I've never really played before.
Wouldn't hurt. Although I live halfway across the globe from you so I'll probably only be able to play with you on weekends (morning for me, night for you).
The TL group is actually awesome , i wish there was a way we can all group somewhere and play......ok fuck this shit , EVERYBODY IN THIS THREAD , if I create a clan , which server is best for you ?
I'd be willing to hop in for some games. I do have to say, though, that I will probably just get roflstomped unless I am playing someone else that is relatively new. I can beat the campaign, but that's about it lmao.
Of my 4 ladder (BNet) games I've tried, it was pitiful. Maybe I just don't understand the basics of WC strategy.
This goes for everyone who is a beginner and doesn't know where to start. Please post replays. It will help us a TON in giving you advice, and it'll help you a TON in receiving less general advice. There are many replay submission sites, so use one of those and link it to us.
My best account was lvl 28 so i'm not too good but this game is the nuts. It's surprising but when you don't practice alot of it gets hard. Especially for a random player like me .
I just got to rank 14 on UsEast, i play human and if this clan thing is really going to happen id love to contribute and be apart of it, pm me if theres any more info on it in the works.

Yumiko's commentary is pretty nice too. He spends the first third(?) of the game being confused about Lucifer's strategy. (At one point he was like, "... I don't want to say anything because it could be a really good strategy, but it could also be a HORRIBLE strategy and he's just making shit up as he goes," while TeD at the beginning is just like, "Yeah, this strat sucks," followed by a lot of "lulz TeD" remarks when Luci's first push hit successfully.) From what I can understand, Yumiko basically thinks that Lucifer made a mistake making too many frosties (says two should've been enough) and not getting the freezing breath ability to freeze up the expansion (or the altar when SH was reviving). Also something about Lucifer getting a little complacent when he got four frosties out. Good try by Lucifer.
Just recently started playing again on US east. My names are the first unit for each race _hero (example Ghoul_hero, Grunt_hero etc) If anyone wants to play hit me up! Back in 2005 was the time I was best I think I was a level 32 NE. Back then I was 12 LOL. This time around i'm trying all races (hence the seperate accounts) but currently my favorites are undead and Orc.
I would love to play on Bored Aussie but the guest account to ask for an invite is banned.
So if anyone has a spare invite, or could ask for an invite on their forums on my behalf, that would be super! Please PM me and I'll respond with my email. Been playing Australian dota for years without one, and I know its dying but I'd still like to be able play dota since dota 2 is so damn laggy in Australia! Battle.net is just about dead.
This is the game I played the most and I was best at. If you have never tried it please try it out, it becomes redundant after a while, but it is a boost for your micro at sc2. I warcraft every unit counts!
What is your guys opinion about the balance? I felt it was really easy to play against undead as orc, but way too hard to win a game against ne.

It's pretty much accepted that the most imba matchup out of all of them is UD v Orc in favor of the Orc. Other than that the other matchups are pretty well balanced.
What I want to know is if anyone else heard the rumor about a new balance patch coming for war3 around the time of WCG. Something about aboms getting bash ability.

Where did you hear that? I don't think Blizz cares about wc3 anymore. So a balance patch is highly unlikely. And when abos get bash I want thunder clap for my mountain giants

Any good undead player makes me feel like UD is bullshit race (Coil, Nova, gg) but anyone outside of Th000, Ted, Happy(RIP), Lucifer, and yfz? makes me feel like undead is shit.

*WFZ Also, haven't seen TH000 play much UD lately ... he mostly does HU/NE these days.
I'm kind of confused as to WFZ's success lately, actually. Watching his games, he doesn't seem to have as strong micro as Lucifer, TeD, or Believe (before the military ate him), but he has a winning record against Fly afaik and did take a game off Lyn recently (due to some very nice creepjacking, though ofc, Lyn stomped his ass the next two games).
In other news, Reprisal's been doing so well recently. I'd initially put down his recent success in ZOTAC to FoCuS no longer playing due to the Sonik drama, but he 2-0'd Lawliet and Lucifer and 2-1'd Lucifer to first place in the IEF quals.

I saw th000, as undead, beat Yumiko after losing both his lich and DK to militia. Also, he beat infi in that silly random-race final.
WarCraft 3 was the best time in gaming in my life.i didnt want to switch to sc2 but i felt obliged since blizzard suffocated wc3 by not supporting it and letting hackers run rampant.Still i believe wc3 is blizzard's masterpiece.

TH000's off-race is good, but let's not pretend his UD is wtf amazing. I know the game you're talking about, but Yumiko's really not that great vs. UD tbh, and that was more TH000 doing his typical smart play-from-behind-into-gg shenanigans than his UD being that great. (Aka TH000 being TH000, less TH000 having great UD. Lucifer incidentally pwns Yumiko most of the time without losing his heroes to Yumi's ridiculous surrounds.) And, well, that silly random-race final.
TH000's NE is really good though; too bad he only plays one MU.
Ok, we're gunna attempt to go ahead and make a TeamLiquid clan on EU server on Bnet.
My name on there is StoryOfLife and I'll be hanging out in channel: "Teamliquid" pretty much all day everyday. Stop by and if we get enough players in there at once we can make the clan.
If people want to post time of day and or days of the week that they are free then maybe we can brainstorm a good time for everyone to get together to make the clan it'd be great. Try to post your times in CET time to make it easier to coordinate!

Hey man ! thanks a bunch , I'll be there in about 8-10 hours once I am done with work :D
Is anybody watching the replays from the WFDC 2v2 tournament ?
Just when I thought 2v2s can never evolve or change , Th000 & Yumiko come up with this insane style of playing as Hu/Hu vs anything..... every time I watch one of those games I am left speechless :O

Yupppp. Those two are amazing. I haven't seen the apparently uber-epic TH000/Yumiko vs. Fly/TeD(!!!!!!) series yet though. So excited to go through the reps when I finally have time. It'll be one of the few instances when those two are actually playing pros who can micro as well as them if not out-micro them. :D
In 2v2, at least one human needs to get Blood mage at tier two. Constant mana drain is so effective and with a paladin as well...
th000 is a god. Yumiko not quite as good. Glad to see that TEDDYBEAR is back. Fly is still awesome..
One thing i have noticed is that ever since they nerfed the tower repair rate, humans have really been struggling in all matchups. Even th000 is struggling.
TH000 is god at micro, macro, strategy ... everything on the goddamn earth. Yumiko is, however, god at surrounds and being a supportive teammate.
TH000 is struggling against maybe only Lyn and Fly these days, and sometimes in the HU MU (which he race-picks NE in anyways, so n/a). His last 10 series are like 9-1, with a 0-3 loss to Lyn, but it is Lyn after all, and they trade series pretty often anyways.
I would love to see another 2v2 tournament of this caliber soon , lets face it , if Th000 & Yumiko team up again all the other teams/pro need to brainstorm like hell to figure out a counter to this new style , it's so fucking refreshing to see something like this during these times in wc3 , I saw all the replays and it is mind boggling what these 2 can do , abuse expos , yumiko killing off a t2 orc with mass footmen harass while th000 is raping the other 2 , tech switching at the perfect time , new timing attacks...the amount of variations they can add to this style is limitless.

I think Th000 simply dislikes the HU mirror, I read that back in 2010 in some interview , I don't believe he can't play the match up.
Edit : Btw should we send ToD & Grubby personal messages to maybe comment every once and a while here ? I would love hear some of their analysis on the games and players we discuss here , thread owner any thoughts ?
th000 did lose a bo5 to Lucifer not too long ago, something rather unexpected.
And regarding human mirror, Chinese humans tend to avoid it. It may have something to do with Sky playing the opening match against Yaws in a human mirror in Chengdu @ wcg 2009 and losing it. I think i've seen one Sky vs Infi hu mirror but that's about it for chinese humans.

So what ? Yaws literally raped Infi the year before it , I dont think it has to do with that certain incident and whatever meaning that lose meant.
Maybe collectively as a community they dont enjoy the MU ? I have no idea.
repair rate was only nerfed for towers that were under construction, pretty much only affected hu vs orc, had nothing to do with vs fiends and they buffed rifles and knights
Ok guys, seriously thinking of just settling with Iccup, since it is more of a international solution compared to other clients~ And Garena is too confusing and has limits
Edit: Oh man, they stream with "shadows" settings set ot "off"? Horrible...
I didn't even notice, hahaha! Too entranced by TH000 vs. Lucifer on TM. Both of those are so good at long management games!
Lyn vs. Infi seems to be playing on another stage: http://match.replays.net/Live/530,2 (if that doesn't work, go to the original link I posted and click on the drop-down box in the top-right hand corner of the video screen and select "War3")
So there was a thread open about why sc2 is getting owned by Dota and LoL on the casual level , and they posted a few things about Warcraft 3, and then some dude there posted this video.
Moon is to Warcraft 3 What flash was to Brood War. It was always a shock to see him lose. Not only that, but he innovated so much crap; aow golem dot vs tanks especially stands out
And, he and infi had some of the epicest expansion matches.
Has anyone seen this new guy called TheLordo (Orc) playing? He's managed to easily defeat well known players like Nicker with his mass witch doc + spirit walker + BM/TC/SS.
He makes good use of spamming sentry wards + stasis traps around the map plus healing wards. I don't think NE players have an answer to this new style of play.
I just watched the three games of TheLordo casted by SirPurebe. Looks like he camps in his base with very little til he has master WD and Spirit Walkers... It takes a long time... The Night Elf can freely tech, creep, and expand in the meantime. The game he lost, five Faerie Dragons crushed him. The other two games, there weren't many Faerie Dragons or wisp bombs and he was able to hold a line he could freely place healing wards and stun traps behind. It looks a bit cheesy, that can be beaten easy by faerie dragons and dryads, or maybe just good positioning.

Moon would have an answer.
But i think Dots and archers would do well; Demon neutralizes the TC. Dots the BM. (SS is ...) Archers > casters.
It's typically a NE vs NE build but in this way i think it would work quite well.
I don't know why I have lag playing this game on EU server. I'm in France and my internet is pretty good in general. Anyone knows how to deal with lag...? There was once a tool to reduce bn lag I remember.

Thats not actually how he plays it from the two games I've seen (nicker being one of them). For starters it is BM/SS/TC and aura first for TC so there is no neutralization to be had. SS is good because he prioritizes wards after lvl3 (with hex) and it deals good dmg to whatever his composition is weak against, namely dryads. And ofc orbing up that BM and hoping for that imba crit item drop which also will destroy archers.
It is fun to watch but I agree, it would be beaten by any top player if anyone actually cared about this game anymore. This isn't even completely new I have even seen grubby play around with 2x spirit lodges and t3 witch doctors years and years ago.
BW's my favourite game to spectate, but WC3's my favourite RTS by far.
Decided to play it again instead of SC2 a while ago. Managed to play like 300 games of 1v1 in September before WoW:MoP came out. It's fairly addictive. Even on West there were constant 1v1s.
Was NE in 2004, played Human instead when I came back. I find HU vs Orc's my easiest MU, whereas I struggled with UD till I found out about the Paladin abuse and that you had to not use casters :s. Militia creeping's fun, but I hate footmen - they die to everything soo easily!
Great to see a community on TL repping the game. EU's pretty bad for me (I already play with 200 ms on US), and I'm not sure if I'm gonna play it again, but if I do I might check this out.
That Moon vs Sky video was painful to watch as a Human player. Sheesh at the Zeppelin micro.
Hey, I bought this game for fun a couple of weeks ago, and I was wanting to get into the 1v1 ladder. I've never played before, but I think that I would like to play NE race. Could anyone link to me good places to find vods, build orders, and general strats for NE?

Not so sure about build orders, but I used to learn a lot from watching audio commentaries. WCReplays is still somewhat active I think. I'd check that out. http://www.youtube.com/user/wcreplaysvideo

Meh, I always preferred 2 different types of killing nelfs as orc:
1. Lucifer's heavy BM harass -> wind riders + mass expansion. Sounds stupid but works wonders, you're forcing nelf to hide his wisps all over the map right off the bat which slows him down big time.
2. Suho's FS tower rush. Kills early-teching nelfs right off the bat, especially if they don't spot you building towers outside of their main on first night.
As a bonus, there's this gay strat for orc vs UD:
Level up FS to 3, buy invis potion and tp staff, go into UD base and rape all acos with chain lightning + wolves. Repeat.
As an UD, it's just horrible to lose all your acos mid-tech to t3.
Lately I have been playing some random team at the Northrend server. If someone is interested to play some arranged ones with me just ask about it. Im using account called "wakeupdead".
Not sure about timing, but you can just periodically refresh war3.replays.net. They will have a big LIVE announcement when it goes online.
Not sure if Moon has practiced War3. Typically replays will get leaked if he's been practicing with other players, but who knows ...
Also see no reason why he wouldn't play with his Fnatic tag, unless he's like Lyn, who just plays with his WMF tag and Check's account all the time for shits and giggles. I literally cannot remember Lyn ever playing with a DK.Lyn account. If Moon doesn't play with a Fnatic account, then I presume the Chinese will write Fnatic.Moon or something on their scoreboard anyways, so it doesn't matter much.
They already played Moon vs Sky. It was pretty quick game on Ancient isles. Moon managed to get a kill on lvl3 AM and later destoyed sky's expo with 4 glaives, small archer/merc army and lvl 5 warden.
Stream schedules afaik (ripped from the side of the streams where they list the schedule): 542 -- corr. to WCG A - Moon vs. Sky (already played) - 15:30 - Fly vs. Hawk - 16:00 - TeD vs. Lyn - 16:30 - Sky vs. Paladyn - 17:30 - Moon vs. ReMinD

Sky's play was pretty lackluster imo. I wouldn't call it bad, just not the classic Sky we like to see. Moon's play was clean (though I hear some ppl say he might've tree-killed his first creep, but it's hard to know for sure). Sky rolled over and died before we could really see more, so it's difficult to judge.

Yeah sky did a lot of critical mistakes like letting lvl3 AM with tp die and only using 4-5 peasants to repair his expo when he had like 7-8 peasants nearby.

So the sad thing is that Sky doesn't play much better than this these days. He didn't even look that great last year when he took 2nd. Even in the games he wins ... I watched him win a game against WFZ (last G-League?) where he had like 4 peasants in the gold mine for the last quarter of the game + let his MK die as soon as it came out the altar even though he had the chance to run it away. :/
Oh well, it's more everyone else's fault for always bombing the quals I guess. (TH000, I am looking at you.)
There are tabs too on this website that you can page through for results for both days or the results of the groups. I can tell you that Moon and Sky are through from Group A, and that Lyn, Fly, and TeD are playing a tiebreaker for Group B later today (since TeD > Lyn, Fly > TeD, and Lyn > Fly).
EDIT: Tiebreakers are scheduled at 10:00 AM China time. Not sure if they'll be streamed.
EDIT2: Fly and TeD advance to finals, Lyn losing to both in tiebreakers. Moon vs. TeD and Sky vs. Fly in Ro4. First semifinals at 12:00 China time (~30 minutes from this edit).
Moon vs. TeD is next on WCG A. Sites say it'll start at 15:30, but ofc you should keep an eye on the stream.
Sky vs. Fly was very standard OvH. First two games iirc Sky opted for T1 TR with FL. Worked Game 1 on TM (Fly's BM taken out when he was playing too close to the wire, then Fly's altar was taken out before BM could come out again, followed by burrows; his main and rax was going when he GG'd), failed Game 2 on TS (after denying Fly's shop three times so that it wasn't up when Sky actually hit, but Fly had a walker out by then and held it off easily after killing Sky's AM). Game 3 Sky tried for a T2 AM/BM caster TR on AI, but Fly got lvl 3 on SH right before it hit and denied it very easily afaik, and Sky had to GG.
EDIT: Stream says games will start in nine minutes, at 15:15.
That was easily one of the best games this WCG, if not the best. Hope they can keep it up for the whole series. :D I haven't felt that much energy from both players in a long time. Hope it goes to a Game 3.
The english casters are fucking shit. "Maybe this is a 4-player map" It's twisted meadows. How stupid can they be...
SBK is about 1000 times better.
But damn, that 3rd-4th place match was hella nice. Felt bad for moon because he was clearly out of practice, but i don't think an ORC vs UD can match these matches.
This reminds me so much of Grubby vs Remind two years ago. Goddammit. Fly deserved this so much more. + Show Spoiler [rant] +
Of all the races, UD were nerfed the least in the latest patch. And look at Ted and Happy before the patch; they were both raping everyone. But since everyone else is so bad at playing UD, they nerf the other races...

TeD's plan was to come back after all the other top UDs retire so that nobody remembers how to play the match-up anymore. Fly didn't play the MU well at all, esp. considering the sheer number of risks TeD took in creeping, running around the map with nary a worry, a tp, or a hpot; takes balls though, kind like sharking around on creep.
Lyn should've beat him with one hand tied behind his back, but he looked so out of shape this tournament.
I had nearly forgotten (somehow) that from say 2000-2004 I spent a good chunk of time downloading and watching replays of WC3 pros from this site. I remember seeing names like Rotterdam and Tod on there... loved watching humans especially. I've been playing again recently, since I got some pretty serious bronchitis last week, and it's amazing how much better SC2 has made me at the the game.

Playing SC2 will make War3 feel really slow, so you'll panic less! Battles can last forever.
I don't think it helps much with processing battles on-screen though. I still have trouble trying to force myself to actually do stuff during battles, because all I see are spells flying, colors, and whoa, my shit is dying and my opponent's shit is not.
I recommend w3g.replays.net over wcreplays.com though. I think Replays.net gets replays out faster and it's organized really well.

Wc3 is diff set of skills focusing on micro and target priority in battles and stuff.

You def should give wc3 a try! It's a great game!
I'm starting out as well, I'm LoveTT on east, west, and w3arena. I'm trying to learn NE but I don't know if I want to be ne or orc, Im torn between the 2.

I encourage you to jump right in on ladder immediately after you learn a few build orders. If you are playing Orc, though, you only really need one build order. And no, I'm not making a joke about "just hit B after you click the altar." There are a few variations on the opening, e.g. when you put down your shop, how many grunts you make, etc., but it will make little difference if you're not playing at a really high level, and there's really only one composition that you need to make: BM+SH/TC, grunts/raiders/walkers/kodos(/trolls).
Far more important is learning how to effectively control the map with your BM, which you can't do until you play against another human anyways. Creep routes are best learned on ladder too imo. ^^
Also, take it from me, people suck on ladder, esp. US servers. US East and West are great places to start out as a newer player. You will see people at lvl 20 who don't even know the standard build orders, much less more "complicated" stuff like AoW creeping.

Ye, I've just downloaded like 100 replays from war3 reps so Im just looking that those and I got grubby, lyn, and fly fpvods to understand their thinking and mentality while playing.
So I watching WCG vods on sbk's channel again this morning , aside from how amazing the plays were , you gotta admit that this wcg only needed one more element to make it the best WCG of all time , Grubby
Well shit happens , our legend is making his way in sc2 , can't blame him for not showing up.

I haven't tried battlenet servers. This past month I've been playing like every other day on garena and have always found people to play. People generally know what they're doing there though so you might get a bit frustrated learning there unless you have a good RTS background. PiPoGevy hosts a garena TL group if you're interested!

w3arena is what I heard is the good server, like ICCup is for bw, despite still being in beta. I would play more on there if I wasn't that afraid of being owned on ladder aha. I still have to start studying the game and learn the builds.
Also: Fnatic fired Moon for "lack of resutls". Maybe we see Moon go back to warcraft 3 again?
Been playing Warcraft III extremely (extremely, mind you) casually since 2003, mainly for the campaign and against the AI. Started playing "competitively" with friends after discovering Crota's Warcraft 3 shoutcasts and Grubby's commentaries, eager to go to wc3arena to test my mettle against people who actually play the game on a ladder system. Also just wondering, how is undead underpowered compared to the rest? Playing against friends it seems fairly even...

Just play what race you like best. Orc have an advantage against UD, but UD have an advantage vs NE so overall it's not so bad I think.

No. Undead is the harder race to play of orcs and undeads. Happy and Ted have/had been good for a long time. Frequently destroyed top orcs.
The only reason is that there were few good undeads.

In a straight-up game it isn't so bad. Unfortunately, there are so many ways to cheese and abuse UD (as in, abuse it if you're playing against it) that it's no longer funny. People slaughtering your acos when you're mid-tech, being the only race to get their first dispel at T3 (absolutely having to tech to T3 as fast as possible in every matchup is a problem too), tower rush vulnerability etc. etc.
Trust me, I know, I was playing mainly undead and whenever I off-raced and went against UD I did evil things to them as every single race can cheese them to death in more than one way.
I remember when the paladin first build was introduced into the metagame by TH000 (if i recall correctly), lvl 2 holy light + 1 attack = dead aco. combine that with divine shield and being unprepared for the strategy... jesus christ. sad sad times

Thanks for the explanation. At my (extremely) casual level I can play pretty much any race against people who have no clue what they're doing, but I enjoy undead the most. I think after your post I'll go play some other race...but Orc is too mainstream, NightElf just seems asshole-ish with mass Cyclones and I dislike the feel of Human. Sigh.
Just play the race that appeals to you the most on the basis of fluff or story/style. For me, I have been playing Orcs since Warhammer Fantasy so it was no hard choice.
Is it just me or does B.Net have like 1 second delay? I have tried going back to warcraft a few times but the delay made it unplayable. Anyone else experience this or have a fix?

Bnet is always going to have that kind of lag. If you want to play on a lag free server with no hackers then play on:

orc have no weak mu and they have a strong mu (vs UD), while the other races have at least one weak.
On December 19 2012 05:13 Psycho_Gemni wrote: How long has NE been doing mass DoT's vs Orc?
Late 2005 if my memory serves me right. MagicYang is said to be the real inventor (an obscure korean semi-pro), but the final version, with the 2 tavern heroes harass/staff abuse got mainstreamed by Moon.
At first the strategy was called imbalanced, but slowly, few top Orcs figured out that they should in most case focus the NE heros inside of the dotts, since they were the real damage dealer in that composition. After figuring out how to beat mass dotts and that SW got buffed against cyclone/HU repair speed got nerfed (all current 2006), Orc emerged as the overall strongest race in 2007, and remained so until the "end" of the pro-scene.
The spirit walker buff was way before dotts became imba hu scout tower repair (which was massively imba) wasnt fixed until 2008 also you didn't mention the windwalk and ensnare nerfs And Orc never really 'figured out' mass dotts, subpar elves were always a threat to beat even the top orcs
I asked this question in the Garena group , sparked a nice conversation and some epic nostalgia , I will ask it again here to get this thread moving a little bit
In your opinion , what is your top 3 favorite Warcraft 3 games ?
Including VODs and replays is optional , however it will help us people in this thread have some good time.
I'll start things off :
Note : I am a bias human player who loves watching humans win , again these are my personal favorites , I hope everyone shares their's too :D
#3 : WCG 2009 , Infi vs Fly , Game 2
Infi was fucking brilliant , I haven't seen a human vs orc executed so perfectly like this game.
#2 : Blizz Con 2009 , Grubby vs Moon
just when you think Moon is dead , holy shit ! btw I stole this one from frequency
Why I love this game ? watching sky trash this guy is hilarious ! that shit wasn't even fair XD , it just cracks me up every time I watch it , and lets face it , back then I don't remember humans were as aggressive as he was , I thought it was impossible to do so then Sky proves me wrong....hell I still remember when I downloaded the replay for the 1st time and watched it, I was thinking "dafaq is this dude doing ? does he have a death wish or something ?....oh my god !....I think I just jizzed my pants...nope that wasn't bunny's effect XD "

Mirin' your post brah
Tchado: Don't really have any favorite games I remember a great game of Demu vs Sky on TM with crazy breaker priest with intense zepplin micro (yes im human btw).
And for rememberance worth mentioning Axslav (rdm-hu) vs Sky closespawn on TR where Axslav goes T1 2x barracks and only footmen.
Abver (ud) vs Grubby where Abver goes FAST T2 NO ALTAR and picks up two tavern heroes at T2.
I loved DIDI8 also when he was in his prime and was playing the mass AoW/archers in NE mirrors on TR.
Those are the ones I can remember on the spot.
OH! And there was a very enjoyable american (usa i guess?) human who played in one tournament I never knew if he was a fakenick or what happened to him he was nicking ..ghost something he played MK, BM, Pala pretty much every game I saw with great staffswapping back when that still was allowed.

Hey guys, unfortunately I am unable to handle this thread anymore, I will be taking a break from all forms of gaming and so will not be able to manage any action at all that comes in or out, if someone is able to manage the thread, eg. recreate, etc, that would be awesome, preferably somebody who is whole heatedly involved in the W3 scene, please inform me first anybody who is willing to take over
Just reinstalled, been laddering it up. For some reason I can't connect to US West so I've been playing US East, love WC3 but I'm in 'straya so it's laggy as hell
I'm pretty nooby but if anyone wants a game or practice partner PM me, I play UD. If I had to guess my skill level I would say something equivalent to Gold in SC2; I have an alright idea of what I am supposed to be doing but my micro is on the terrible side.
Ten years ago today, the greatest game of all time, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne came out. This game was to me what Brood War was for a lot of people on this site.
I'll be spending my day laddering for a bit and listening to New Found Glory which was exactly what I was doing ten years ago today.
today i played 2 games and i had so much fun ... omg i think i will play more, sadly bnet dont have much ppl it seems, is there a private server were more ppl play?
