So, it might be a bit early to talk about this, but hey, we're moving into December. The only big games coming out this month are Mario Kart 7 and SW:ToR.
What recommendations does everyone have? I'd say Deus Ex is a solid choice, if it's few noticeable flaws don't hold it back too hard. Uncharted 3 was visually and cinematically stunning, but I don't know if it's gameplay holds up to other games released this year.
But my top pick would be Portal 2. The only issues I have with it are it's short length and how it was a bit easier than the original in some ways. A high production value, fun single player and co-op, fun and amazing story, witty humor, and good replay value definitely shoot it to the top of my list.

Skyrim is going to take game of the year hands down. It has a 95 out of 100 on metacritic placing it tied for 2nd for highest rating on a PC game of all time.
Also, Portal 2 was far too short. Valve claimed they were going to make a proper length and they really didn't. It's only 9 fairly short chapters. As far as replay value is concerned, Portal 2's built-in multiplayer has 0 replayability, which was a huge letdown. Mods will help it save face though.
Edit: changed the metacritic comment to make it accurate (had accidentally only clicked on PC games).
Edit+ Show Spoiler +I am adding a poll for games that were brought up in the thread. Please only vote in this if you want either of these two games for Game of the Year over the other choices Poll: More GotY OptionsThe Witcher 2 (30) 57% Minecraft (23) 43% 53 total votes Your vote: More GotY Options (Vote): The Witcher 2 (Vote): Minecraft

Why don't you do a poll of good games that were released this year?
Uncharted 3 was good but it was exactly the same as 2nd, with less epicness. Some good candidates would be Gears of War 3, Skyrim, etc.
|
Yea i'm betting on Skyrim, even though i didnt like it myself.
Portal 2 is good, but just not big enough i think, it's not on the scale of BF3/Skyrim or most other games.

Batman AC would be my pick, it is hard to believe they actually managed to top over the previous title because the last one was extremely close to perfect as far as a batman game can go imo. They managed to improved it, make it a bigger game along with a lot of easter eggs and flight controls, even better combat system, catwoman side stories. They also had one of the best voice acting in gaming history and a well-designed batman plot.
The game actually made me want to collect as much collectables as possible, which is really rare because I usually just rush the game and quit. (and oh, the ending is super epic)
And the highest graphics detail, makes the game STUNNING. I was extremely impressive at the graphics and the overall art design is really well done as well (the art collections are great as collectables)

Skyward Sword? I haven't played it but I hear it's awesome

Isnt Zelda - Ocarina of Time the highest rated game ever? Overall Rate is 99 which seems a little bit higher
And my guess would be Skyrim cause it prevents many girls from having sex :p

Also, I just got Gears 3, but it's sitting in my "To Do" pile until I get caught up on work. Stop making me want to slack off an play it Q.Q

Here's a poll, and there was only room for 12 possibilities so I probably missed 2 to 5 other possibilities

Actually, I think between our two polls we covered the majority of them.

Battlefield 3, MW3 (sadly), Skyrim, Portal 2.. few good predictions. I haven't played Skyrim nor will, but i bet it will win. Star Wars might be successful as well as Portal. Battlefield 3, maybe. IMO best FPS this year, easily.
|
And out of those 12 possibilities, I've only played 1 (Portal 2). >_>;
Tbh, I'm a bit scared to try Skyrim because I don't want to get sucked in, haha.
Edit: Also play BF3. :D
|
my predictions are a tossup between Skyrim & BF3, the two which I bought. lol

Yeah, I hear ya about Skyrim, which is why I am only starting on it tomorrow night, because I have 7 weeks of no graduate school.

Some big boys competing this year. The biggest and best imo:
- Portal 2 - Skyrim - Arkham City - Skyward Sword
These are games that people will remember for years. Absolutely nobody will give a shit about GoW3, MW, BF, AC 15, etc. a year from now.

Bastion Hands down if it was up to me. The only other contenders being Dark Souls or Portal 2. Everything else has been either iterative or flawed in execution.
Skyrim will win, but doesn't deserve it. It's a fantastic game, but it's not revolutionary, breaks down in certain situations, and has plenty of bugs/flaws. Bastion, while smaller in scope, executes beautifully while also pushing out a spectacular soundtrack and advancing some of the concepts of how we can tell stories through video games.
I wanted to say Amensia since it picked up a lot of popularity in 2011, but it was a 2010 release (though 2011 retail release). Still a shame it didn't win in 2010 as it was far better than any other release with a possible 2nd to Starcraft 2 (though comparing the 2 just shows how pointless game of the year is).

For whatever reason it didn't show Ocarina of Time, when I looked them up. Must have accidentally had it on PC games only.
Edit: I hit the all button and because N64 isn't an option anymore it still didn't show Ocarina of time on the all time list.

deus ex was great too but i think skyrim is the game of the year.
