So, it might be a bit early to talk about this, but hey, we're moving into December. The only big games coming out this month are Mario Kart 7 and SW:ToR.
What recommendations does everyone have? I'd say Deus Ex is a solid choice, if it's few noticeable flaws don't hold it back too hard. Uncharted 3 was visually and cinematically stunning, but I don't know if it's gameplay holds up to other games released this year.
But my top pick would be Portal 2. The only issues I have with it are it's short length and how it was a bit easier than the original in some ways. A high production value, fun single player and co-op, fun and amazing story, witty humor, and good replay value definitely shoot it to the top of my list.
Skyrim is going to take game of the year hands down. It has a 95 out of 100 on metacritic placing it tied for 2nd for highest rating on a PC game of all time.
Also, Portal 2 was far too short. Valve claimed they were going to make a proper length and they really didn't. It's only 9 fairly short chapters. As far as replay value is concerned, Portal 2's built-in multiplayer has 0 replayability, which was a huge letdown. Mods will help it save face though.
Edit: changed the metacritic comment to make it accurate (had accidentally only clicked on PC games).
I am adding a poll for games that were brought up in the thread. Please only vote in this if you want either of these two games for Game of the Year over the other choices
Batman AC would be my pick, it is hard to believe they actually managed to top over the previous title because the last one was extremely close to perfect as far as a batman game can go imo. They managed to improved it, make it a bigger game along with a lot of easter eggs and flight controls, even better combat system, catwoman side stories. They also had one of the best voice acting in gaming history and a well-designed batman plot.
The game actually made me want to collect as much collectables as possible, which is really rare because I usually just rush the game and quit. (and oh, the ending is super epic)
And the highest graphics detail, makes the game STUNNING. I was extremely impressive at the graphics and the overall art design is really well done as well (the art collections are great as collectables)

Isnt Zelda - Ocarina of Time the highest rated game ever? Overall Rate is 99 which seems a little bit higher
And my guess would be Skyrim cause it prevents many girls from having sex :p

Battlefield 3, MW3 (sadly), Skyrim, Portal 2.. few good predictions. I haven't played Skyrim nor will, but i bet it will win. Star Wars might be successful as well as Portal. Battlefield 3, maybe. IMO best FPS this year, easily.
Bastion Hands down if it was up to me. The only other contenders being Dark Souls or Portal 2. Everything else has been either iterative or flawed in execution.
Skyrim will win, but doesn't deserve it. It's a fantastic game, but it's not revolutionary, breaks down in certain situations, and has plenty of bugs/flaws. Bastion, while smaller in scope, executes beautifully while also pushing out a spectacular soundtrack and advancing some of the concepts of how we can tell stories through video games.
I wanted to say Amensia since it picked up a lot of popularity in 2011, but it was a 2010 release (though 2011 retail release). Still a shame it didn't win in 2010 as it was far better than any other release with a possible 2nd to Starcraft 2 (though comparing the 2 just shows how pointless game of the year is).

For whatever reason it didn't show Ocarina of Time, when I looked them up. Must have accidentally had it on PC games only.
Edit: I hit the all button and because N64 isn't an option anymore it still didn't show Ocarina of time on the all time list.
Skyrim is a bit overrated, imo. Yeah, it's better than Oblivion in a lot of ways, but it's just another iteration of the same thing, like MW games. It's fun and involving, but there were so many other games that were as good or better. Deus Ex gets my vote.
Wow, I havn't played more than 1 of the highly liked games this year. Only played the beta of one other. I guess modern releases aren't something that I feel is a must get. I have played more games released 5+ years ago this year than I have released this year...

Yeah I agree, but unfortunately GotY tends to be tied a lot with scope of the game.
Any game with a large scope + pretty good gameplay is going to be almost a shoe in for the award (see a game like RDR and GTA) because of how much time you spend with it. When thinking back on GotY awards the game that takes up the most of your memory will win out. Doubly so since you will look back with rose tinted glasses.
A game like Bastion was short, but all of it was expertly crafted, unique, and well done. It, or something like DX/Portal2/Dark Souls probably deserves to win, but has no shot (though I didn't play the latest DX).

Dark Souls actually would have a legitimate chance of winning, but will probably lose out in the end to Skyrim simply because it isn't as accessible of a game as Skyrim is.
Skyrim is so massively overrated, how can one really vote for it being the best game of the year???? - the graphics are nice but the engine sucks, look at shadow effects or walking on mountains or riding a horse or whatever. It's all just so bugged.. I'd rather have less graphics and some consistent effects. Also it seems the engine can't handle more then 15 characters simultaneously because they carefully avoid that in ANY quest in the game... - AI is terrible, melee enemies are a joke because they get stuck and companions are a terrible nuisance, they block you all the time... - There are a ton of gamebreaking bugs... Main quest line even gets stuck a couple times... - The UI stinks on the PC and there are even more bugs on PC - The level system stinks, you have to mindlessly craft tons of potions/enchantments/leather bracers to level alchemy/enchanting/smithing. The balance in the perks also sucks immensely, many of them are immensely broken (like smithing in general and enchanting for mages). - Quests are quite uninspired, the main story is a total letdown and almost all sidequests just lack imagination (especially the civil war sidequests are just so boring repetetive). - Combat is quite repetetive, just very little variation in the type of enemies you face or the spells/moves you use to kill them.
The game is not worth more then a 7.. How all the critics somehow neglected all these points is a complete mystery to me. Still granting a game a 9.5 because it's few flaws are overshadowed by the awesome experience is ok with me but that is simply not the case with skyrim. The list of flaws is so long and many of them are simply too gamebreaking to neglect, especially the bugs...
I haven't played most of the other games but surely some of them must be tons better then skyrim...

I feel like the hype and, like you said, accessibility of Skyrim will probably push it to GotY. While it might not be objectively the best game, it's go so much fan force behind it that I think people feel obligated to put it there.
Lol these polls. They all miss the real GOTY: Witcher 2. Sorry guys and gals but Witcher 2 got better graphics and storyline then any other 2011 game (except maybe SWKotor story which we don't know yet). One could argue the combat is also better (at least it is much more difficult then games like Skyrim).

The problem with Skyrim scores is that it is a recent game and when you start to play it, it is pretty addicting. I am sure if voting was done in 6 months things would be much different. Once people stopped playing Skyrim and then with a cool head figure out how crappy the UI is (and many will have played the console version where they cannot get better UI anyways) they would vote differently.
Warms my heart to see Deus Ex: HR in the OP I'd seen so many people whining about it online, I think I'd convinced myself that I was the only one who loved it. Like the original game, it's a flawed, beautiful confluence of awesomeness.

Of the games I've played I'd say Bastion ought to take the win. Portal 2 didn't need to exist in the first place which is a true but cruel thing to say about such a polished game. Skyrim is sprawling and great fun but ultimately just another Elder Scroll game and you could be voting for Oblivion or Morrowind with pretty much no difference. Deus Ex Human Revolution copies the original Deus Ex well but fails when it has to bring its own material to the stage. Battlefield 3 is an overproduced multiplayer shooter with yet to be solved issues. Modern Warfare 3 is a rock you pick up from a pile of identical rocks. The new Assassin's Creed falls in the same category as MW3. I haven't played Gears, Uncharted, Arkham City or the new Zelda so I can't guess how well they'll fare. The Old Republic hasn't come out yet but it's an MMO so that should solve the issue entirely. Bastion ought to take it in my opinion because it has a big heart and because the elements which compose it are perhaps more humble than those of its competitors but mesh together more joyfully, and, frankly, all these games are AAA titles and successors to other games. It would set a good precedent if an indie title clobbered all these expensive franchises. Maybe the big developers would crawl out of their pool of stagnation and create something original and worthwhile.

So your main concern is bugs? Well that what patches are for. Have you ever played wow? SOOOOO MANY BUGS even after years and years of release. With a game that BIG and a game that require that much freedom, there are bonds to be ALOT of bugs. The only way to really find these bugs is to release the game and let the consumers find the bug. The game is just too big that if the developer were to try and find every since bugs, then it would be too hard. I totally understand what you mean since I have a PS3 and it suffering from the terrible lag.
You argue that it is boring because of repetition? I can argue that this game is FAR from repetitive because it allows you to be basically any class you want. So you can kill them with magic, weapons, stealth mode, tanks mode, bare fist, archery anything....I dont see how that repetitive. I dont see what more you would want...
lvl system is mainly the player opinion. It make the player want to try new thing and explores the game. Sure, it can be broken but that why it is a one player game. Although I personally like it.
I find the voice acting to be amazingly good and the freedom to basically do what ever you want. It makes you want to explore and travel and discover all of skyrim. That is what it means to be a good RPG.
Better AI? It incredibly hard to make AMAZING AI, I think the AI in this game are already good. You must not play alot of these game so you dont understand how hard it is to make a good AI.
Anyways, your main concern is bugs and bugs can be fix with patches. There we go, GOTY right there.
You list alot of flaws but you dont list what can be improved. I dont really see what more you can ask for....

Because the two websites I visited didn't even list it for major releases of 2011.
Deus Ex, hands down. As much as i love Skyrim/The Witcher 2, no other game so far has gripped me in the same manner as DXHR had. The gameplay was spot-on, scoring the right balance between stealth and action, and I loved how you had so much freedom as to how you approach the game itself.
And, no other game this year had made me play it until 6am in the morning when I had a school test at 8am. Epic game.
Of the Games i've played I'd say Batman Arkham City. Hands down the best game i've played in years alot of good games like Skyrim , DXHR , Witcher 2 but Arkham City is just so much fun.
witcher 2..? really? It got so immensely boring when you get to the city that I just couldn't handle playing it anymore... graphic is amazing and amazing atmostphere too but i don't know... story wasn't that catchy and interesting.
Skyrim hands down....I played most of the games on the list. Dark souls, Witcher 2, Deus Ex I would vote for runners up but I already spent more hours on Skyrim than all of them and still playing. People will hate cause its the new and popular thing but the poll speaks for itself really.
No one mentioned Amnesia the dark decent yet? It should be one of the contenders. Minecraft was also officially released a couple of weeks ago.
Off those I've played:
Best action fps: Battlefield 3 (Deus ex: HR) Best RPG: Skyrim (Witcher 2, Bastion) Best puzzle: Portal 2 (orcs must die) Best indie: Amnesia the dark decent (Minecraft, Bastion) Best strategy: WH40k Dawn of war 2 (Tropico 4) Game of the year: Skyrim

Witcher 2 is my GOTY *by far*. Skyrim is good, but it suffers from the same problems previous installments have. Plus, the PC users got screwed, again. I've stopped playing and intend to resume once big mods come out. Deus Ex is the best shooter this year.
Skyrim is also going to win because of how new it is. If it had come out in March or something, the hype would be gone and something else would take it's place, probably Skyward Sword.
I did not like Skyrim much at all but that's probably because I just dislike RPGs in general. I haven't played some of the games mentioned and the game that I've played most out of them is BF3. I'm not so sure it deserves to be game of the year but that's the one that I've played the most at least.
On December 01 2011 03:44 N4ppy wrote: Diablo 3....oh, wait....
They might as well hand out next years GOTY award to Blizzard now. Diablo is a little lucky to be avoiding all these powerhouse games this year. I don't expectthe pool next year to be nearly as deep.
I played Skyrim, 100+ hours spread on 2 characters and it is boring. Will not be surprised if Skyrim end up winning GOTY because of hype + lack of competition.

Unless Kingdom Hearts 3 comes out. It will automatically get my vote and my money.

I'd say the "powerhouse games" are lucky to avoid Diablo.

It took u 100 hours to realize it was boring? How many games did u spend 100+ hours on this year?

most of hte good games i played this year were too similar to past games to really captivate me.
uncharted 3 and portal 2 were great, but I will probably not remember them that well in the future, and they each disappointed me in some ways (both played it way too safe, and then had their own slight problems (uncharted 3 felt too rushed in the 2nd half, portal 2 had some really lame puzzles)).
gears 3 and crysis 2 were OK. gears 3 was probably the best gears, but there are just other better cover-based 3rd person shooters out there now (namely vanquish, which mops the floor with ANY 3rd person shooter lol). crysis 2 was probably the best FPS in a while (single-player at least), although not nearly as good as the original crysis.
i havent played arkham city, but i've had it for like a week from gamefly and just ZERO motivation to open the game lol.i have absolutely no interest in any of the elder scrolls games so I wont be playing skyrim either.
bastion is probably the only game i've played this year that I was completely satisfied with to the end. it's strange how much of a good impression that game has left on me. it's just a fantastic game. so that is my vote for now lol
although I still want to play dark souls after this semester ends.

I expected skyrim to get a ridiculous amount of votes and was not dissapointed. The game has many many flaws (as previous posters have pointed out) but the thing is that people are willing to completly overlook them because it's still a very fun game to play despite all it's flaws.
Deus Ex: human revolution gets my vote. Its a really great game that has pretty much everything; good soundtrack, good story and NPC interaction, good gameplay etc.

lvl system is mainly the player opinion.
I have to say I didnt play it for very long (~15hours) The AI is incredible bad. And no it's not incredible hard to build an AI which will not stop acting as soon as their target moves to a hard to reach position. And the game is repetitive. If we use your points "you can be every class you want" we have the replay value problem A good RPG has restrictions - so having every possible option available is imho not that good. This is something I completely miss from Skyrim - are there any big decisions? My actions dont really seem have consequences (as I mentioned only played ~15hours). Apart from which side to pick in the war of course. And from some memes ("Become Archmage - if you have the aptitude you should join the mages college at winterhold") it seems NPCs dont really react to past events (which they should).
Also there's basically no balance. Stealth Archer with Blacksmithing & Enchanting. Everything dies in 2-3 hits even on master vs S&B. They also didnt solve the enemy-scaling problem. While it's definitely better compared to Oblivion - do I really want to run into a random cave and one-shot everything there, since it's 0 challenge? Though I dont really know how to fix that problem ("too easy" vs "those random bandits are wearing more expensive gear than me!"). Maybe a difficulty meter for each Q, so I dont waste my time 1shotting bandits when I'm looking for a challenge, but have the option to when I want.
Not saying it's a mediocre game or a 7. But I dont know if it's GOTY. But imho GOTY is stupid anyway - since everyone has a personal opinion. And just because more people like something doesnt mean its better
Wow, this year really had so many good games come to think about it - skyrim, deus ex, portal 2, skyward sword etc. I really think Skyrim will take it (and rightfully so) but the other games this year are pretty sick as well.
Skyrim, 3 patches after the mod tools have been released. That's when most of the bugs have been ironed out and mods have supplied content like story, better combat, items that actually matter, nerfed the crafting and hope to god maybe even add in more voice actors so you don't talk to the same male or female voice all game long. The vanilla game is a good platform, but the content shipped is nearly exclusively the game world and locations. Rest of it is really pretty bad.

yes but diablo is PC-only, a lot of games get most of their sales from console. Considering within just the PC domain I think it's pretty high up.

I also think this. I just got Skyrim because of the hype, but really I didn't enjoy the game. I played it, it was fun with a wide open world, but I didn't enjoy it. But I don't see anything topping it. It was hyped to hell and back again. -.-

I'm actually that S&B guy I mentioned A friend of mine plays the Stealth Archer. "But then dont play it that way" - well you're of course right it's better for the personal experience. But that logic can be applied to multiple other games / scenarios. And it doesnt change that it's bad design.
skyrim is awesome but so much of my hopes still ride on future modding
minecraft sorely lacks terraria's content but gains major points by virtue of being first and having a 3rd dimension. (i can only imagine how awesome a 3D terraria would be)
bastion was meh
I havent played any of the console heavy hitters
SO my GOTY vote goes to games still in development (dota2, dcss, dwarf fortress). game of the year, every year.
Skyrim, or more to the point, Bethesda gets what RPGs are all about. Graphical glitches, bugs, sub-optimal AI all means shit compared to IMMERSION and Skyrim got tons of that, and in the end that's all that counts.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait.
You played a game that you found boring for 100 hours? Can I hire you to mow my lawn or something?
Skyrim with a marginal lead. Developers take notes on how to develop a passion for a game. Oh wait, nevermind all you have to is copy paste a formula 15 year olds love for 7 games in a row. My bad.
Skyrim is the game of the last three years probably. This is going to be the least interesting year ever for GOTY discussions because it's all going to be unanimous. The poll on the first page of this thread doesn't lie.
Idk I haven't played all the games on the list but Skyrim was the first Role playing game ive played and i really enjoyed it. The first fifty hours went stupid fast, I mean it was crazy lol. I also really enjoyed portal 2 alot but i hate to say i was disappointed in the difficulty of the game. Anyway I did vote for Skyrim cause it pulled me in and its a game i could play many times over.

3 little words Grand Theft Auto (number 5 could theoreticaly be released next year), if you think Diabolo is popular you forget that the majority of gamers today are console gamers and diabolo means shit to them.
On Topic:
First i have to say i didnt play Witcher 2 but maybe i really should since it seems to be a great game. Nor did i play Arkham city or Dark Souls. So i cant consider these games for my game of the year pick. Games i did play and think are worth considering are Skyrim, Battlefield3, Portal2 and Deus Ex:HR. All in all i think Skyrim will be GotY even if its not my favourite game this year. Its far from perfect but the others arent perfect too.
Multiplayer game of the year, best sound effects, best animations and best lighting and textures goes to BF3. My favourite game this year is BF3 but thats mainly because i like multiplayer games more than singleplayer. Also BF3 has the best graphics and by far the best sound effects i have ever heard in a game. The multiplayer is pure fun even if it may not be suited for "high level esport standards". Why is this not GotY? Because the singleplayer story is mediocre and a obvious attempt to copy COD, although i like that its a bit harder than COD.
Best humour and videogame character goes to Portal2. Portal2 was fun too, a good story and hillarious humour. But its too short and easy so not a game you will be playing too long. Cave Johnson is definitely my favourite videogame charakter this year and dont disagree with me on this one or he will burn your house down... with lemons. But in the end it has too little content to be GotY based on the story and its too easy to be judged as a innovative "puzzle game".
Best Aesthetics goes to Deus Ex:HR I really liked the Style of DE:HR and the story was good too. In fact everything about this game was atleast good. So why not GotY? Because nothing was really breathtaking exeptional (atleast not for me). No fancy new engine, no innovative new mechanics, no exeptional soundtrack. Atleast the aesthetic style is original but somehow (and i know this is a subjective judgement) this game still lacks the spark that makes it a GotY.
Best Soundtrack and Leveldesign and GotY go to Skyrim So lets talk about Skyrim. This game, altough it has a lot of flaws, has the certain something. And dont think im i blind Elder Scrolls fanboy or fantasy game fanboy in general. Because normally i dont like fantasy games. When my brother showed me the Skyrim trailer i thought its a nice trailer but that game has no guns so i probably wont like it. I even joked about it and mentioned this scene from raiders of the lost ark: + Show Spoiler +
Then i played Skyrim, now im a believer. Well i have to admit im a bethesda fanboy because of Fallout3 and NewVegas. And skyrim has most of the elements that made me like these two games. The stories in skyrim range from ok to very good. Some quests are boring courier jobs and some are fascinating Indiana Jones like adventures or epic sagas of heroes. But thats the strong point of Skyrim, content, content and more content. And i really enjoy the unique subtle Bethesda style storytelling where you find out about stuff that happened trough books, notes and/or random strangers. Yes some things dont add up depending on the order in wich you do the quests but this freedom is also a quality of the games storytelling. You decide what happens when and if it happens at all. Then there is this beautiful world they created. Its just amazing to hop on your horse and just ride trough the woods of Skyrim. Find a viewpoint and take some screenshots or be amazed by a mysic temple you discovered. The beautiful land of Skyrim sucks you in and doesnt let you go for weeks maybe even years. This whole experience is underlined by the best soundtrack in a videogame this year (maybe even all time). God how i love the music in Bethesda games. Reasons why this shouldnt be GotY: Well there are a lot of bugs in Skyrim more than in every other game i listed here (but im one of the luicky ones that hsnt had much problems with BF3). Other that that the game is not very challenging and some mechanics are probably a bit overpowered but for me its not a dealbraker.
Honorable mentions: "Fuck You Gamers" award goes to Duke Nukem Forever Seriously 12 years of cheking out the 3Drealms forums for this? The game wasnt even that bad like some people made it look. But the hole fiasco with the dedicated servers was just a big fuck you to us loyal fans. Shame on you Duke.
Best movie with videogame elements goes to Uncharted3
I don't see how Skyrim doesn't take down every award it's eligible for to be honest. Other games this year have been downright amazing, but Skyrim just completely annihilates everything. I haven't had the same amount of fun with a game since the original halo back for the xbox. I played most of the games (played 10 out of the 15 on the list), and only a couple blew me away (Deus Ex and LoZ), but Skyrim made them look hollow. So I say Skyrim all the way.
It's probably gonna be skyrim, though personally I found the game good, but very repetitive at times. Its combat was also pretty unremarkable, regardless of the difficulty level. If you're a player who doesn't like exploration of a game world, I could see how Skyrim could be a borefest for some. Like Jindo said, the first few hours of the game are very interesting and capture your attention well, but eventually it becomes obvious that a good 65% of the game is sort of just a repetition of the amazing 35%. There's a lot of quantity there, but it almost feels like they stretch out the dungeon slogging a bit too much.

dungeons are a bit long but there are SO SO SO many quests that are completely unique to do, you need to talk to more people and you will see how you can open up many different pathways etc.

I've played the game for many, many hours on master difficulty (I'm somewhere around level 75ish), I am honestly probably in the very last 20% of sidequests remaining in the game (yes, I do talk to nearly every NPC I can find in every town), and probably only have about 20 more locations to discover.
I think the option of giving the player so much vastness is good, but there's definitely a lack of true variety in gameplay experiences (at least for the sidequests). Even all the little puzzles in the dungeons are exactly the same thing repeated 4 or 5 times (look at the claw for the animal symbols, look on the wall for whether it's a snake whale or eagle, pull this lever not that lever). You have to admit that after the 3rd tomb you clear filled with draugurs, the remaining 20 or so tombs left that are associated with quests or dragon words get kinda repetitive. Plus of course, the AI is pretty simplistic. Dragon fights are sometimes pretty cool, but every other enemy is fairly straightforward in its tactics (which is probably a necessity, given how every "spec" should be able to defeat it).
a lot of games deserve the recognition of GoTY, but skyrim has the popularity and pull that makes it a far memorable game (on a large scale) than any other.
on a personal level, i loved dues ex and bastion, but skyrim is still like the must-play. i don't know how many days in a row i spent in a group chat with our mics while i played skyrim and found myself talking about every little thing. it is a unique RPG where everyone receives the same experience in different ways---sometimes based solely on how you are like as a person or in game. you have so much control with yourself that it's like a proud achievement to be able to talk about your character or where its been.
at the beginning of the year, i played a lot of oldies with friends or without them, and looked for even more oldies to fill in the time between major game releases as nothing else was in my real interest. skyrim though, just about fills in as many interests as a game could... that is, if there's a little bit of exploring nature in you.
It comes down to really really close between Portal 2 and Skyrim. I have to give it to Portal 2 however, such a polished and unbelievably enjoyable experience that is now in my top 3 games of all time (Skyrim isn't far out of it though). My Top 5: 1-Portal 2 2-Skyrim 3-Witcher 2 4-Deus Ex 5-Batman: Arkham City
Great great year for games. Battlefield 3, Dead Island, Warhammer: Space Marine, Bastion, and DiRT 3 were some honorable mentions, all worth playing.

Dota 2, Diablo 3, HoTS, Guild Wars 2, CS:GO(?).. what else i'm missing?
LOL DOTA the children-party (abuse, flame-fest), then HOTS. Uuh yes, I am so waiting for HOTS after they have proven that they do not give a damn about the story-line. Guild Wars 2: no one knows if it will be finished the next year and if it will succeed. CS:GO? The console title? Will it fail or will it fail? They neither worked on the flaws in CS nor CS:S, but you expect them to create a good new CS?

None. Quantity does not mean quality.
Ok 10 hours is a big difference from 100+ hours. Oblivion got boring to me around 20-30 hours and I only went back after modding the shit out of it. How many of those 100 hours did u find enjoyable is the question...I recognize Skyrim has flaws but its already given me more hours of entertainment than any game this year. Thats mainly what I base my vote on. Witcher 2 for example had amazing production values and better combat than skyrim but after 2 playthroughs totalling 50 hours or so theres nothing left to do really.
GotY for me is definitely Battlefield 3. Personally I could never give any game without multiplayer a leg to stand on when compared to one with multiplayer and for all of skyrims ups, which is like everything except for the UI they made, any game with multiplayer (including MW3) will always have more replay value than a singleplayer game whos only purpose for is it to play when im bored. Especially if that singleplayer game's mechanics are just running and hitting things (which skyrim is)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a much better successor to its predecessor than Skyrim was to Oblivion.
Deus Ex: HR, Skyrim, Batman: AC, and Witcher 2. They were all fantastic.
well to be fair, the difference is about two or three years, deus ex 2 to current (human revolution) is about 8 years and oblivion to skyrim is around 5
like i said earlier, and aside from the fad it is now, it will still be a more memorable game for what it is (skyrim that is). for anyone reading though this and hasn't played deus ex or anything else yet, don't let comments that take away from all the other games mentioned here!
my friends and i are really co-op oriented ever since the days of neo-geo or when online RTS and RPG's were really fresh on the PC. now, i can absolutely say that co-op bears heavy weight when game producers sit down for ideas. even if the game isn't co-op it makes players happy and brings fun to the table when they know that so many other people are playing the same thing. think counterstrike when it seemed like it was the only game anyone was playing back in the day, or diablo 2 when it took your life by choke-hold. a game may be impeccable in all things story-telling and its very own atmosphere, but may not hold the same phantasm... i guess.. of a gigantic production like skyrim. haha. think of all the voice actors they needed for that game.. unbelievable
skyrim, portal 2 and DXHR are my picks, though the former 2 are probably 1 and 1a on my list. wouldn't really be fair to put games I haven't played yet on a ranking.
It's so hard for me to pick. Portal 2, Deus Ex, Skyrim, and The Witcher 2 have all been MIND blowing gaming experiences this year, and I couldn't possibly know which one I want to take GOTY.
Been an insane year for gaming for me, so no matter what happens I'm happy
would really like to try Zelda before i decide, will probably try AC:Revelations just for the hell of it, but doubt it ranks above the other games just cause i've played brotherhood and AC is starting to feel somewhat stale.

Why is Portal 2 over Human Revolution
Why is it over Witcher 2
I'm so confused. I mean, Portal 2 was fun -- but it wasn't amazing either. Witcher 2 and HR are were huge sequels to two fantastic, and perhaps, some of the best RPG's ever made. Portal 2 was the sequel to a game that had 2 hours of content, at most. It was fun, don't get me wrong -- but it's by no means GOTY.

Isnt Zelda - Ocarina of Time the highest rated game ever? Overall Rate is 99 which seems a little bit higher
And my guess would be Skyrim cause it prevents many girls from having sex :p
Not sure I get this statement? Cause their significant others are busy playing skyrim? Because it has a surprisingly huge following among female gamers? Because something else?

it's personal opinion. i could similarly question why you would choose witcher 2 over portal 2?

It doesn't prevent girls from having sex. greenelve is just horny and trying to justify his lack of sexual activity.
so many people voting for games based on amount of content. it's so sad
i would rather buy/play a game that was only 6 hours long if it was fun to play. but I never want to buy/play games that last 40+ hours when all the gameplay is incredibly shallow/repetitive. this is why I can never get into any RPGs, the gameplay mechanics are just so lame and then spread out for huge amounts of time.

But my top pick would be Portal 2. The only issues I have with it are it's short length and how it was a bit easier than the original in some ways. A high production value, fun single player and co-op, fun and amazing story, witty humor, and good replay value definitely shoot it to the top of my list.

This thread is in Sports and Games not the SC2 general discussion. Make a thread about that in the SC2 general forum?
Skyrim was fantastic console game, but it was definitely half-assed on the pc side. They ported it with to my knowledge not changing anything. And that caused a lot of problems. But on the console it was absolutely incredible!
Honestly, I think GOTY awards are silly. Whatever game is in the biggest hype of the current end of the year stretch (in this case, Skyrim, despite how much I love it) wins it. I just feel it's kind of arbitrary, since earlier titles in the year go completely unnoticed. I honestly think that Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the game of the year. Skyrim should get best RPG of the year, but Deus Ex: HR needs to get GOTY in my opinion. It was probably the truest successor to the original Deus Ex we will ever get, and that is a feat in it of itself.
Witcher 2 also deserves an honorable mention in something. However, Skyrim was great. Skyrim was fan-fucking-tastic, even. However, just because you're all experiencing it at the end of the year doesn't mean it's the best. If Skyrim was released in July, and Deus Ex: HR was released in November, the tables would be turned completely and you know it with the hype that was around that game when it was first released and the weeks after.
Not saying Skyrim shouldn't be in the running, I just personally believe, when we all take a step back, Deus Ex deserves it more than Skyrim. Skyrim basically completed the job of not wetting the bed, Deus Ex did so much more IMO.
in terms of best made game i probably would say its Skyward Sword. it got crazy reviews. however because GotYs also take into popularity, skyrims probably gunna win.
I think Skyrim was a massive letdown. Game of the Year? Yeah, probably. For anyone that played Morrowind it still doesn't come close, and that was what many were hoping it would be, but nope. Miles better than Oblivion.
I'd personally give it to L.A. Noire...an extremely innovative game in a genre that is barely explored, with graphical technology we've never seen before in a video game. Skyrim will no doubt win all the awards, it's just a shame it's more like an Oblivion that Bethesda didn't fuck up instead of something that can touch the greatness of Morrowind.
Zelda. Skyrim is for masses as pop or rock. Skyward Sword is classic music at his best.
What game have been played by more people? Modern Warfare (only talking about single player campaign) or Ocarina of time? A game can be more popular, but that do not make it the finest.
Btw: I played both, Skyrim imo is 9.5 amazing game, Skyward is 10/10, masterpiece.
Zelda is a classic and revolutionizes motion control. It was one of the most anticipated and one of the best of the year, no doubt.
Skyrim won't take it for the same reason MW3 and BF3 won't take it. It's eye candy popular game and that's it. It is the Lady Gaga of video games. Wins awards because it is popular.
Also, Famitsu gave SS a 40. Skyrim not even close.

Famitsu gave Skyrim a 40/40 too genius...at least know what your talking about before making stupid arguments
If Arkham City had been a bit longer & the side quests a little more meaningful, I would've chosen it as my GOTY. There's nothing quite like flying around and beating baddies up as batman. As it is though, it's between that, Skyrim and The Witcher 2. Hard to seperate those, but I believe the community mods will make Skyrim ultimately my favourite game of the year.
Yeah, I didn't think Arkham City had a whole lot of depth to it to be honest. I thought a lot of it was fairly redundant, the story was okay I guess and everything was pretty simple and straightforward. Anyway, I never pay any attention to reviews or what game critics have to say because I don't agree with the criteria.
Only played skyrim and portal 2 out of all the games listed. Definetly had way more fun playing Portal 2, such an amazing and polished game, multiplayer aspect was amazing having to work together with a buddy to solve the puzzles, loved every second of it, skyrim is nice and i spend a lot of more time playing that game, but i defintely take quality over quantity anytime.

It's been a VERY long time since a game has created a Genre, and Minecraft will be remembered forever for just that.
Minecraft didn't craete a genre. It is known as sand-box game. All it did was to throw the player into a randomly generated world. It could be a sub-genre, but then you can say that CoD should win something for creating the casual-FPS.
Minecraft should win the independent game or whatever it is called. No indie dev will ever do a better job than Minecraft.
Skyrim by a billion miles. No other game comes close, people are saying portal 2? Are you out of your mind? Portal 2 is pretty fun we get it but I've never seen a more hyped franchise in my life. Hipster Portal, /shudders.
Skyrim should clean this up if there is any hope for PC gaming moving forward.

Except that Skyrim isn't a PC exclusive, nor was it developed primarily for PC. Bethesda said that they planned for the 360 to be the primary system, and the PC is a port of it.
If you want PC gaming to move forward, you'd support Portal and Valve, one of if not the biggest PC developers on the market.

While you're correct it was developed first for 360, the PC version is miles and miles ahead of the console versions. Sure the UI is a bit clunky for a PC interface but that's about it. The game runs better, looks better and feels better on the PC. Once the mods start flowing in after the Skyrim workshop is released through steam the game is going to be even more incredible. And yes, modability and replayability should factor into this decision, no game released this year will end up as customizable, or as deep as Skyrim.
I have never enjoyed a single player game as much as Dark Souls in my life. The combat just clicks with me and I wish there were more games that used its system. The pacing of the game is great, definitely a step up from Demon's Souls. Grinding is never truly necessary unless you need to get levels to equip something you want to wear or use, and even then, skill alone is enough to overcome just about anything in the game. Whenever I overcame a challenge that minutes before seemed impossible, the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction was like nothing I've ever experienced.
With that said, most gamers don't want the kind of challenge it brings to the table. I have introduced it to several friends who are pretty good gamers overall and watched them die dozens of times to the point where they wanted nothing more to do with the game. The hardcore appeal, or rather, lack of casual appeal, is probably why it won't win GoTY from any publication.
edit: disregard as plenty of people had already said this exact same thing

LOL the UI isnt just a "bit" clunky it's complete trash. and the game isn't really that deep the world is just really big lol
What is really interesting/annoying is how many of these games are sequels. LA Noire gets my vote because it was a new idea, a full game, and not a rehash.
The current sequels in the top games are: - Elder Scrolls 5 - Battlefield 3 - Dark Souls (Demon Souls 2) - Portal 2 - LoZ.... 16? - Deus Ex 2 - Modern Warfare 3 - Uncharted 3 - Batman Arkham City (Asylum 2) - Gears 3 - Infamous 2 - Witcher 2
Current original IPs: - Bastion - LA Noir
I miss the times where new games were actually new.

Can't pick one over another though, they all deserve accolades for various reasons.
Lots of other games missing from these polls too, how about Shogun:Total War? Or Dragon Age 2?
Skyrim will win I guess just because it's fresh in peoples mind, good game, but I wouldn't give it goty simply because of it's horrible interface, everything an interface could do wrong, it did wrong. Portal 2 practically "perfect" as far as games go, although personally I didn't like the reduced difficulty compared to the first game. Bastion is totally under-rated, best story of any game I've played this year. Terraria was just fun, plain and simple, everything I ever wanted from a sidescroller when I was young, and that 16-bit feel really took me back to those days. Limbo just had great atmosphere, best way I can describe it is braid, but turned up to 12.
So yeah, all good games, hard to pick one over another. Played many other games of course, but these just stood out for me by far. Like, in 5 years time I think I will be able to look back and remember these games (and probably LA Noire) and remember them very fondly.
arkham city just blew me away... it was an amazing game, it poops on arkham asylum and leaves it for dead, its just that damn amazing it wont get GOTY but it wont win

I don't know about City 'pooping' on Asylum. Asylum has better atmosphere & holds up pretty well in other aspects.
I would vote for minecraft if I could - the ongoing updates will allow players to (hopefully) enjoy increasingly complicated and interesting worlds. Also the music is beautifully done

Anyways, Skyrim wins. Quality of game + lack of anything similar this year + massive sales.
it does look great but how can you already say its goty. noone played it. you never know that southpark rpg might be goty rofl,
i think many people are voting skyrim not because they think it's the best game of the year, but they think that everyone else thinks it is going to win because they think everyone else thinks it's the game of the year
There is no other option than skyrim. it is indeed the best game of the year. People dont just vote for skyrim because they think everyone is going to vote for skyrim. People vote for skyrim because it is easily the best game of the year.
I'm just going to rant about how GOTY is stupid rather than write something and add "no contest" or "hands down". If you don't want to read why I think it's stupid then just pass over my comment; I'm not trying to start an argument.
GOTY is incredibly subjective and an absolutely useless designation. GOTY is subjective because picks are based off of the enjoyment that you had while playing the game. Since different people enjoy different types of games, they aren't objective in their evaluation. In addition, your opinion can even change depending on when you play a game and how the structure of the game fits into your lifestyle and what you're looking for to fill your time. Furthermore, you can't choose one game as the best of the year when you have played a minuscule portion of the games released during the year. Since the majority of people only play the biggest-named releases that are hyped up, they'll choose one of those as their GOTY. GOTY is useless because unless you're living under a rock, you would have played the game or heard all about it by now. Therefore, it doesn't help anyone find a new game to play or do anything besides have fanboys argue.
While a Top X (say 15) games of the year is also incredibly subjective, it has the potential to be more useful. You can ascertain the writer's subjective bias from a sample of the list and then make assumptions about the games you don't know much about on the list. Also, you can get an idea of what games he's tried and what consoles he's sampled from. The length of the list helps filter out people who have only played a handful of games: probably all big-name titles.
Nevermind. Ski Region Simulator -- 2011 GOTY. No contest.
None really stand out for me, all the games are just improved sequels... but somethings gotta be chosen. Nothing shines like Uncharted 2 or bioshock from previous years.
My vote goes for Arkham City. Skyrim is great, fun, exciting, infinitely replayable, and cool as hell, but Batman Arkham City, is probably the greatest single player experience I've ever had, and I still have not finished the game (40% story, doing side missions etc.)
Other candidates in my opinion, would be Deus Ex:HR and Witcher 2.
I'd say Skyrim. Portal 2 was the highest quality, most polished game and I loved it, but it just lacks the massive scale and timesink value that Skyrim has. The world is beautiful, it is most deserving of the games there. Though something is to be said for those with amazing multiplayer (BF3).
KH3 For next year''s GOTY!!!!...............I wish it would be made at least......
I've gotta give it to Skyrim. Portal 2 was really good as well, Gears 3 was I suppose technically the best Gears game but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two. BF3 wasn't very good, and most of the other major releases I either haven't played enough to form an educated opinion or haven't played at all.
It's been really great year for games... Portal 2, Witcher 2, Skyrim... my pick is Skyrim. I would like to play Arkham city and Uncharted before I make my mind thou.
hands down no contest at all. its been ages since the last time a game sucked me in that much that i want to stop all rl stuff and just play play play. and it does that while beeing fun all the time.
portal2 was grreat but just cant compete with the giant "here we have a giant fantasy world, have fun yo" of skyrim.
havent played batman arkham city yet (again cause of skyrim). think it would be a top contender also, atleast judging by the first game and the reviews. tho i think the release date hugely hurted the game esp on pc
Deus ex hr is worth mentioning too but its not quite up there with the others(yet way better then most). witcher 2 i didnt play since witcher 1 was the only rpg ever i deinstalled after only like 80minutes of playing it.
In my opinion it would be between Skyrim and Portal 2. I didn't play any multiplayer games that came out this year, I didn't have any interest in any of them.
So far I played a lot of Skyrim, but if I look at my Steam account I have still played Terraria a lot more. I do realize it has been released earlier than Skyrim, but after the release of patch 1.1 for Terraria I went back to playing that.
So my vote goes to Terraria.
But as with every vote, it's based on personal preference.

Kinda sad to see Oblivion HD or Deus Ex 3(/5) getting goty but i guess there is nothing better available nowadays for the mainstream consumer. Well at least we won't get a shitty console shooter.
Definitely Bastion. I wouldn't consider it perfect (some needlessly frustrating challenges, and a couple of odd moments), but overall it felt so fresh and exciting that I was really impressed. I want to play more games that are short and perfectly formed, instead of big for the sake of being big.
skyrim is so boring, dunno why everyone has a boner for it. Everytime I try to pick it up to try and justify my 60 dollars on it, I can barely play for more then a half an hour. there's just no motivation to do anything and just too much shit to keep track of. UI interface is god awful as well.
not even going to mention all the choppy lag and other technical problems.

I doubt I will play Skyrim until the second half of next year after patches and mods are there. I don't get the fun vibe from it, epic sure, fun, doesn't seem that way to me.
when this thread started i played skyrim only 2h was skeptic and said witcher2 is better, but now im 30h+ in game and i have to say this game rules and brings morrowind memories with alot of improvements (the leveling system in morrowind was pissing me off i hate playing flawed chars and it was close to impossible to get 5x multipliers unless u spent fortune on trainers and used tricks), i understand skyrim is so huge and its impossible to not make mistakes but if they fixed some bugs, added spell creating, made separate GUI for pc users and fixed few skill balance issues(i belive in modders+dlc!) this game would win no contest, definitely one of the most epic games i've ever played i love open world and being free to do w/e i want, bethesda really did good job, im happy that so many people who never heard about TES before felt in love in this game which definitely deserves the attention it has now.
I'd have to give my vote to Skyrim, nothing else really comes close for me this year. Shogun 2, while still a pretty good game, was a huge letdown for me because my expectations were so high. It still doesn't compare to Skyrim though.

Oblivion HD came out in 2006. It was called Oblivion.
I'd say Skyrim as the game was designed and intended. However, with all the bugs and the most recent patch not even allowing me to play without the game crashing to desktop with no error messages (highly annoying), I think Uncharted 3 won my votes on all the sites.
