It's fun and involving, but there were so many other games that were as good or better. Deus Ex gets my vote. Yeah I agree, but unfortunately GotY tends to be tied a lot with scope of the game. Any game with a large scope + pretty good gameplay is going to be almost a shoe in for the award (see a game like RDR and GTA) because of how much time you spend with it. When thinking back on GotY awards the game that takes up the most of your memory will win out. Doubly so since you will look back with rose tinted glasses. A game like Bastion was short, but all of it was expertly crafted, unique, and well done. It, or something like DX/Portal2/Dark Souls probably deserves to win, but has no shot (though I didn't play the latest DX).

Doesn't matter if a game is longer than 10 hours if I never finish it.

Dark Souls actually would have a legitimate chance of winning, but will probably lose out in the end to Skyrim simply because it isn't as accessible of a game as Skyrim is.

- the graphics are nice but the engine sucks, look at shadow effects or walking on mountains or riding a horse or whatever. It's all just so bugged.. I'd rather have less graphics and some consistent effects. Also it seems the engine can't handle more then 15 characters simultaneously because they carefully avoid that in ANY quest in the game... - AI is terrible, melee enemies are a joke because they get stuck and companions are a terrible nuisance, they block you all the time... - There are a ton of gamebreaking bugs... Main quest line even gets stuck a couple times... - The UI stinks on the PC and there are even more bugs on PC - The level system stinks, you have to mindlessly craft tons of potions/enchantments/leather bracers to level alchemy/enchanting/smithing. The balance in the perks also sucks immensely, many of them are immensely broken (like smithing in general and enchanting for mages). - Quests are quite uninspired, the main story is a total letdown and almost all sidequests just lack imagination (especially the civil war sidequests are just so boring repetetive). - Combat is quite repetetive, just very little variation in the type of enemies you face or the spells/moves you use to kill them. The game is not worth more then a 7.. How all the critics somehow neglected all these points is a complete mystery to me. Still granting a game a 9.5 because it's few flaws are overshadowed by the awesome experience is ok with me but that is simply not the case with skyrim. The list of flaws is so long and many of them are simply too gamebreaking to neglect, especially the bugs... I haven't played most of the other games but surely some of them must be tons better then skyrim...

I feel like the hype and, like you said, accessibility of Skyrim will probably push it to GotY. While it might not be objectively the best game, it's go so much fan force behind it that I think people feel obligated to put it there.

Sorry guys and gals but Witcher 2 got better graphics and storyline then any other 2011 game (except maybe SWKotor story which we don't know yet). One could argue the combat is also better (at least it is much more difficult then games like Skyrim). Crap, knew I was forgetting something.

The problem with Skyrim scores is that it is a recent game and when you start to play it, it is pretty addicting. I am sure if voting was done in 6 months things would be much different. Once people stopped playing Skyrim and then with a cool head figure out how crappy the UI is (and many will have played the console version where they cannot get better UI anyways) they would vote differently.

Skyrim will most likely win and Game of the Year is a massively meaningless accolade. It's as political of an award as any other award show.

I haven't played most of the other games but surely some of them must be tons better then skyrim... So your main concern is bugs? Well that what patches are for. Have you ever played wow? SOOOOO MANY BUGS even after years and years of release. With a game that BIG and a game that require that much freedom, there are bonds to be ALOT of bugs. The only way to really find these bugs is to release the game and let the consumers find the bug. The game is just too big that if the developer were to try and find every since bugs, then it would be too hard. I totally understand what you mean since I have a PS3 and it suffering from the terrible lag. You argue that it is boring because of repetition? I can argue that this game is FAR from repetitive because it allows you to be basically any class you want. So you can kill them with magic, weapons, stealth mode, tanks mode, bare fist, archery anything....I dont see how that repetitive. I dont see what more you would want... lvl system is mainly the player opinion. It make the player want to try new thing and explores the game. Sure, it can be broken but that why it is a one player game. Although I personally like it. I find the voice acting to be amazingly good and the freedom to basically do what ever you want. It makes you want to explore and travel and discover all of skyrim. That is what it means to be a good RPG. Better AI? It incredibly hard to make AMAZING AI, I think the AI in this game are already good. You must not play alot of these game so you dont understand how hard it is to make a good AI. Anyways, your main concern is bugs and bugs can be fix with patches. There we go, GOTY right there. You list alot of flaws but you dont list what can be improved. I dont really see what more you can ask for....

I love how everyone thinks MW3 is undeserving of GotY. Makes me happy.
