Marc Methot is a gem.

Dude plays the game the the right way. Solid in his own end, a physical specimen, decent first pass. Easily a 4-5 defenceman on a contending hockey club. Can play either side well, and I thionk he compliments a defenceman like Karlsson very well in that he plays pretty well the exact opposite style and does it very well. Very underrated, very much a pain in the ass to see him wearing another teams jersey.

I'd say the price was about right.

I've heard people on both sides of the trade say their team got cheated... just pessimism I guess. Definitely going to miss Foligno, really character guy, but if Methot can effectively slide into a top 4 spot it certainly addresses one of our major needs going forward and opens up a spot for one of the prospects in the top 9 forwards department.

EDIT: From how you described him he sounds quite a bit like what Brian Lee was turning into, a non-flashy but solid d-man... who we then traded away for a guy who played a whopping 14 games in a Sens jersey in Matt Gilroy.

Jason Garrison for 4.6 million a year = -_-; He's only even played in the NHL for two full seasons, and neither has been amazing. I could see him developing into a very good player, but he sure as hell isn't at the level to deserve that much yet.

A few thoughts:
I actually like the Latendresse signing for Ottawa, especially at 1.2 mil and only one year. If he doesn't play much, its only one year and low money value (though they'd get the cap room back in IR relief anyways). If he's healthy, he's a solid 2nd line player maybe getting 50 pts a year.

Prust is a good player, but 2.5 mil/yr good? That's is crazy to me considering IMO his max upside is 15 goals a year, good energy 3rd line player. See above for Latendresse, though the risk is much higher, but 1/2 the salary.

I think both Garrison and Wideman got overpaid, but not so much as everyone has said. With the cap going up to 70 mil, ~5mil is only ~7% of a team's cap, which isn't so outrageous for a 2nd pairing PP specialist (at least in Wideman's case). For the Flames, hopefully it means our woefully inconsistent powerplay improves.
On the Flames, I'm still not sure what direction the Flames are taking. Feaster promising big changes then resigning a bunch of the same 2-3rd line underachievers. Wideman does fill the need on the PP, but still looking for some good centres especially with Olli leaving and Cervenka never having played a game in the NHL. Sadly they're looking at another 9-11th place finish.

Not saying Suter is bad - just saying that it'll be interesting to see how his effectiveness changes when not paired with one of the top-two guys in the league every time he's on the ice. "Welcome to Minnesota, Mr. Suter. Now meet Nate Prosser, lol."

Or we might discover that Suter was the guy making Weber look so good. Should be fun =)

Parise overrated because he made one good run at the Cup? You got to be joking. Sorry man, but this guy has been tearing it up ever since the Vancouver Olympics. He is one of the top American players in the league and it's amazing that he's only getting attention now because of the stupid free agency. Overrated? Not by a long shot. Suter got lucky to play with Weber (honestly he got robbed of the Norris again), but he's still very good. 13 years is stupid though. The money they're both earning is stupid but they're really good friends and they played a lot of hockey there.

Good for them.

Minnasota signs two MURICANS on MURICA'S DAY. Those contracts are insane though. They'll both be 41 or so. NMC/NTC, not sure for how long too. I think Suter is a legit stud who should succeed on his own. but that d is still a fucking trainwreck otherwise.

As much as i love prust, 2.5m for him is hilariously retarded. He's a great energy guy who fights and is great on the pk. But he also shot at 15% during his one year he hit 30 points. This past year is more indicative of who he is, and that isn't worth 2.5 by a long shot. I guess i'll have to start loving asham's stupid face.

Garrison's price was more a product of the UFA pickings this year. I don't think it is too terrible of an overpayment.

No i stand my my comment of overrated especially with players like Rick Nash out there... he is like parise on steroids. and Ryan Suter was made to look good by a real Norris candidate in Shea Weber so we will see. either way they dont win this division even once while these two players are on this team.

I would rather have Parise than Nash. Parise might not have Nash's scoring touch but is overall a much more complete player and fits Minnesota's needs better. The price tag is also pretty reasonable imo. The cap is 70 million dollars, you can't compare contracts this year to 2 years ago when the cap has gone up 12%. Parise's contract is roughly equivalent in cap hit to Kane's, except Kane was an RFA and Parise a UFA. Pretty good value considering.

I've had Nashville fans tell me for years that Suter is the best defenceman on Nashville. While I don't believe that, I will say that he is consistent, smart positionally, big, and puts up points on a defensive system like Nashville. Hard to complain about that. Sure 7.54 million for 13 years is a huge contract, but with the cap going up at this rate, in 5 years this might be one of the best deals in the league. If Minni has the cap space, might as well use it; It's not like there are a lot of top tier UFAs this year.

Wait, you actually think Rick Nash is better than Parise? Really? Really?

I cannot even say that with a straight face. Sorry man. The only reason some of you guys think that way is because of the stupid media attention surrounding it. That's the only logical reason.

I would pick Weber over Suter anyday too, but Suter is still pretty damn good man lmao. He's very solid and he's just one piece to the puzzle.

No one is saying they would win the division flat out. Does this put them in the playoff mix? Definitely.

Minny wont even make the playoffs this year. Having 2 centers, 2 forwards (and one of those guys is freaking Heatley), 1 defenseman and 1 goalie is not enough.

Parise is certainly not overrated, but I don't think his game will translate well as he ages. His contract is fine for now, however.

In any case, I'm just glad he didn't go to Pittsburgh.
They say that life's a carousel, spinning fast you've gotta ride it well, the world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams, it's heaven and hell, oh well.

They had 3 'all star' centers and a way better defensive corps. And quick turning into a wall.

Parise and Koivu are both solid two way players but with only Heatley and Setoguchi for the finishing, well that will be grim. Sutter doesnt even have a defensive partner, so with his 7.5m he'll be made look foolish.

But meh, GMs just have to bankrupt their teams on bad contracts every couple of years or it wouldnt be the NHL.

So I know that the Suter and Parise deals are technically legal under the Kovalchuk amendment to the CBA... But they are bullshit and should be negated.


For those who will say "but they're legal according to the rules", so was Kovalchuk's and yet the Devils were docked 3 million dollars, a 1st round pick (which negates the player AND and potential revenue that player creates via merch, attendance boosts, and playoff revenue) and a 3rd round pick (ditto). The only thing the Kovalchuk contract broke was the "spirit of the CBA", which is bullshit since it wasn't defined and it simply followed the pattern of previous deals such as Hossa and Luongo, albeit to a greater degree. Despite the league doing a patchjob with the amended rules after the Kovalchuk situation, it still allows for blatant circumvention and breaking the "spirit of the CBA" as we see in these two contracts.

They should be docked a pair of 1st rounders. One for each contract. They can keep the combined 6 million and the 3rd rounders.
