Him being a dick not withstanding, why shouldn't Lindros get in the hall? For a five year period or so, he was the very best player in the league. He's got HOF numbers by a mile. It's just that he is regarded as a huge cockbag for his situation in Quebec and then the escape from Philly.

Shanny I want in, but I find it hard to get him in on one shot. One of my favorite players, great numbers, but a bit off from a PPG. He was always great for many years, pretty much the definition of power forward for a long time, but I don't think he was ever really the best at his position. Damn close though.

Bure and Lindros snubs blow my mind. Best scorer of the generation vs probably best all around talent. Oates was also the best assist man not named gretzky. #4 all time, I think. I can see arguments against all three being first time ups, but they're due.

If Sundin gets in on one shot I will be fucking pissed.

Sakic is the only new guy who should be an absolute first ballot HOFer

Sakic and Shanny will get in regardless. You can make cases for and against the other guys too easily. It's a very good year for first time ballots.

Sundin as a first ballot is so incredibly retarded. I'd have figured Shanny over him. I'd have prefered Lindros this year, and Shanny the next. I don't think Shanny is first. But a good but not great player gets in without cups because he played in toronto pfffttttt

You left out a few. Roenick and Cujo are on the ballot for the first time as well.

Usually I chastise Matts Sundin's play especially for the latter part of his stint in Toronto, but in this case must I remind you he played on a lot of terrible teams while in Toronto (he never did have a glorified winger in their prime and yet Matts was still a point a game player). He has incredible size, good skating ability (when he used it) and had one of the best backhands in the league. Cujo played on a lot of terrible defensive teams (Matts get your ass back in the play or off the ice!) so he saw a lot of rubber. His numbers were awfully good for someone who had to hold the fort throughout his career to get the W's. He was ridiculously good.

Anyway, it's in from the Star:

Mats Sundin has been selected to the Hockey Hall of Fame — on his first try.

The former Leafs captain was announced Tuesday afternoon as one of four players to enter the hall as part of the 2012 class.

“Three years have passed since I retired and it makes me realize how privileged I was to play my entire career in Canada, where hockey really matters,” said Sundin. “Having my hobby and love for a sport become my livelihood really allowed me to live out my dream.”

It was Sundin’s first year of eligibility and he enters along with former teammate Joe Sakic, Adam Oates, and Pavel Bure.

Lindros was a total failure as Team Canada captain. Canada's worst stretch in international hockey occurred under his captaincy. True skill players can play on both 200X100 and NHL sized rinks. Lindros' ability to dominate evapourated on the larger ice surface.
Lindros was complete total scum from the time he was 15.
refusing to play for the greyhounds and nords.... what an idiot.
Lindros flew around the ice headhunting and looking to injure his opponents.. well the hunter became the hunted and by 1998 every defenseman in the NHL wanted to cripple Lindros...
Lindros is no "concussion victim" he deserved what he got.
He had no business being on the ice against New Jersey because he had not recovered properly from his concussion earlier in the year. But, "Superman" decided he was fine and declared himself fit to play.

Sundin was the captain of the 2006 gold medal winning team. Sundin was a very good player and a first class guy.
Sundin absorbed a lot of xenophobic toronto hate with grace and patience.
Because of Sundin's long stride skating style he does not "look like" a scrappy hard nosed player, but he as tough as nails.
Sundin's relatively low scoring totals in Toronto were due to Pat Quinn insisting the Leafs would never be a 1 line team. His minutes were limited during the regular season and he was paired up with guys like Jonus Hogland. If Al-Mo were paired with Sundin full time he would've easily had 100+ point seasons.

I'm so glad Sundin got in and Lindros did not.

Dude you really have to drop the whole rink size thing. It's getting fucking stale.

Eric Lindros was one of the best power forwards at the time until he got concussion after concussion after concussion. He had a lot of injuries but the numbers are there for when he played just like the numbers were there for Mario. You might not like the guy or his family for that matter, but you cannot deny his talent.

You don't need to win the cup to make it into the hall of fame.

*

1 line team? What the fuck are you talking about? The Leafs never had a superstar forward in his prime to play with the guy. Once again you are spewing out nonsense.

Deserved what he got? We don't have the same doctor clearance as we did back then. You should know how Canadian hockey players are. If they feel like they can play and help the team they'll tell the coach to put them in. This was no different and everyone knows how once you get concussed you are more prone to get another one.

He took the risk and paid for it, but once again let me remind you. The clearance policy has changed compared to back then.

Once again your reading comprehension is below par.
I'll start right from the beginning from the basics.

Pat Quinn's philosophy was to avoid stacking all his best players on 1 line.
so the Leafs best scoring wingers were kept off of sundin's line during 5 on 5.
So when Berezin was in his prime in the late 90s early 2000s he was kept off of Sundin's line... to "spread out the talent".
When Al-Mo was on the team he was kept off of Sundin's line ...
Sundin's line mates were usually far worse than Molgilny and Berezin... guys like the immortal JOnas HOgland was on Sundin's wing.
Also, compared to other superstars Quinn limited Sundin's minutes during the regular season.

This explains why Sundin, IMO, would've had much higher "meaningless regular season stat totals".
did you actually watch the games or are you going by what you read on the internet?

Lindros made a tonne of enemies during his time in the NHL. Do you have any relatives who played in the NHL during Lindros prime years? If so... ask them a bit about what Lindros reputation was both on and off the ice. Half the league wanted to do what Stevens did to him. Almost no one wanted to injure a guy like say.. Joe Sakic.

By 1999 Lindros had his own head doc..some chick from Montreal. It was a source of friction between the Flyers and the Lindros family that he was taking advice from non-Flyers medical personnel.

You make as many enemies as Lindros did.... be a total fail as Captain of Team Canada... and its little wonder you don't get elected to the HHOF.

ever watch Bryan Mccabe try to play on 200X100.
no wonder he got sent home from sweden during the 2004-2005 lockout
i have no respect for NHL players who can't adjust to the larger ice surface. guys like Mccabe are not true hockey players.

Sundin's relatively low scoring totals in Toronto were due to Pat Quinn insisting the Leafs would never be a 1 line team.

You need to work on your writing skills because when you leave it at that I can easily spin doctor it on you.

Don't make vague comments and that won't happen bud. Don't lecture me on basics. I'm a writer and the Leafs are my home team, so I don't need the specs on what Pat Quinn did and didn't do. What you should have said was old man Quinn wanted balanced scoring throughout the entire line-up. That sounds more proper don't you think?

The Leafs never had a stud for Sundin to play with in their prime and you want to rant about Mogilny when his career was on the decline.

As much as I love Mogilny no, no, no.

Sundin's always had to deal with guys like Stevie and Jonas. Berezin was overrated lmao. He had one really good year with the Leafs. The guy could skate. I'll give him that.

I'm well aware of the Big E man. He's always been part of the media circus in Toronto. There are a lot of guys who are chirppy. He is no different than many players in the League. He played fucking hard while he could. Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Mikael Renberg was a formidable 1st line and they called them the legion of doom for a reason. It fit right into the Flyer's hardnose style and of course you're going to make a lot of enemies on the way.

Once again you are pitting Canada losing on the captaincy of the Big E is laughable. Excuses are just that excuses. How about the last World Championship or our juniors? Who would you like to blame for that?

Let's be serious.

You don't like the guy. Fine. All I ask is give credit where it's due.

I have no problem with Sundin. Good player, deserved it. Any negative the guy gets is from being the only hyped player on the shittiest team in the most hyped market. No one can live up to that.

On his merits though, he deserved the nod.

It'll be interesting to see how long the Coyotes can hang on to their free agents....

Maloney has acknowledged that Jamison won't own the team by July 1.

I wouldn't call the Leafs the most hyped market. It's definitely the biggest though as they do bring in the most revenue. It's completely corporate.

Toronto is one of the worst cities to play in. No question about it. The Canadian Press is quite something else in every Canadian city, but in Toronto and Montreal it's a real pressure cooker.

Toronto's D has been suspect for ages. Pat Burns did a great job, but everyone else? Yeah, it was pretty fucking bad. They have been shit for years now.

Considering he had the "C" on his jersey for 11 years making him one of the longest reigning captains in team history in one of the hottest hockey hot beds? That's a feat in itself man. That doesn't even touch base on everything else he did.

He's one hell of a Swede.

...

What the hell man. It's like I'm from Mars and you're from Venus.

If you couldn't tell. There is no disagreement with regards to a top line. However, the Leaf's best wingers back then weren't all-star material. Like I said Alex is a great example of a once great player but his best days were over by the time he ended up in the blue and white. He still showed flashes of brilliance and his numbers were pretty good and that goes to show you what kind of player he was. One of my all-time favourite Russian players to watch but way out of his prime back then. Still pretty good though.

I'm not going to touch base on the other drivel because it wreaks.

Edmonton Oilers managment has called a press conference for wednesday morning. It's expected that Ralph Krueger will be named the new head coach.

Good call IMO. Wasn't a fan of Brent Sutter coaching style and game planning. I like offencive thinking and Ralph will probably bring that

As a kid who watched the Hartford Whalers leave when he was in 5th grade (having grown up 15 minutes from the stadium) I can only say: fuck Shanahan, glad he didnt make it.

I didn't see if this was posted already, and I posted it on nhl.com but got no answer.

Isn't the 2012-2013 season the first season with the new, 4-conference system? It's supposed to be right? But the season schedules do not reflect this, I see many teams only playing each other once in 2012-2013. Anyone know what's up with that?

He and Shanny both deserved. Just not on the first shot for either of them. Bure and Lindros were two of the best of their generation and didn't get in on one shot. Shanny and Sundin are two greats but not best of generations by a long shot.
