Hopefully Valve are smart about it, and make it as similar to 1.6 gameplay as they can, as 1.6 has held a huge audience for 10 years (release date of 1.3, which was when it became mega popular). The only reason Source was played on a big scale was because tournaments were throwing money at it. That's not the way they should guarantee success.

The fact that they gave up on cs 1.6 many years ago pretty much speaks volumes at to which counter strike game they wanted to succeed. Never seen a gaming company be so stubborn and ignorant to what their community wants.

New guns? Yeah, I guess something new would be nice but I don't see the game ever really changing much from the AK/M4/Clarion/Famas/Mp5/AWP/Deagle (maybe one of these will get replaced by a new one). A new grenade could be a game changer though... I'm a lot better at CS:S than 1.6 and play it much more regularly but I still think they should be focusing on 1.6 gameplay with updated graphics. I can't stress how important it is to appeal to 1.6 players first and then make some minor concessions that Source players would appreciate. The Source scene is a complete joke compared to the 1.6 scene. The classic maps should not stray from their 1.6 counter-parts but I would hope they really encourage new competitive maps. That's one thing the 1.6 community really blows at (embracing new maps). After that, all they need is a good in-game competitive ladder/league/tourney/matchmaking system of some sort.

You'd be more correct if you said "what the hardcore esports community, which is rather small compared to the casual community, wants."

Pretty sure anyone that plays 1.6 is part of the esports community by now and I remember steam stats showing 1.6 as played more fairly recently, add that to css "compettitive" (lol) players and tadaa

Rofl Yeah, I really hope this turns into a good game... But so far I have my doubts. I was really hopeful that they were making a 1.6 sequal when I read the title.

So you think fixing 10 year old flash bugs is exclusively what a hardcore community wants? I think its a pretty basic concept that games are supposed to be without bugs, it has nothing to do with esports. Also new maps, game modes and standarizing the netcode would definantly help the newb pub players to enjoy the game more aswell. I don't understand how you can defend valve when theyve pretty much done nothing to further 1.6 as a game. 1.6 is a perfect example of a community driven game that for most of its time was neglected and ignored by the creators.

The biggest problem with CSS is that the game wasn't a real sequel, but the same game on a different engine.

The biggest thing Valve can do is make the game quite different from 1.6/source because there is really no pleasing the super hardcore fans. The biggest problem with CSS is that the game wasn't a real sequel, but the same game on a different engine. That would be borderline retarded. Why would they want to compete with cawadooty or battlefield and try to acquire a whole new audience when they already have an established community that's ready and willing to accept a new game. CS:S is garbage. It's as if you're trying to help chess players that have played chess with sticks and stones for all their live by giving them figurines and a board made out of ivory. However, Valve didn't stop there. They went on to remove a quarter of the playing field, restriced the movement of all the figurines and finally, added obstacles to the playing field which can only be overcome if you answer trivial pursuit question.
