It's always a little sketchy too I think just because the way bases work. For accessories, shields, wands, staves, and elemental maces beating the default implicit isn't trivial with synthesis. Then for boots it's not really forgiving to cheaply craft on top of a base since you always want the 30%ms and since everyone wants that the fossils/essences for it aren't cheap. Then for 2h/Body armor there's of course the cost to 6L it.
So there's really not all that many slots you can easily craft on top of to begin with, especially for a spell based build (using wand/shields/elemental maces/staves).
There's also no cheap way to craft a mediocre item in the game right now really is there? Like if you just wanted to take a base and get some +Life and +Resists on it it's still incredibly expensive to do that. You can scour alch for 1.5c/pop but at that point you may as well just pick up and ID rares or you can use essences/fossils to guarantee a stat, but then you're spending 5-10c+ a pop and that gets expensive fast. It feels like there should be something like essences that can roll multiple lower level mods like +life & +resist but with a cap of the affix tier.

What is your definition of mediocre? Screaming essence of greed is 1c and mastercrafting resists is quite inexpensive too, doesn't seem that bad.

Just like the sort of rolls you'd see sold in the 5-10c range for that slot I think? So like Life roll, >50% resist + some other moderately relevant stat or >80% resist might be a good benchmark. I think you'd still end up spending >5c doing that with essence crafting when you account for rolls that fill up the affix you'd need to craft into and that you'd still be dependent on getting some rng roll affix to round out the item even if you can craft on top.
To put it another way, if you have a white synth helmet with a moderately relevant implicit like +x to stats or +x to life it's still probably significantly more expensive to roll that into an item better than what you could get by just spending that currency directly on an item. And I get that in a lot of ways that's always going to be an inherent property of a trade league, but it just makes these crafting mechanics feels really out of reach compared to how prominent they are in the game.

Crafting mechanics were always for those with extra cash to spend or those that done all regular content and now crafting is all that is left.

Was looking for a new character to play this league and in the end decided to play something I haven't played before : Scourge Arrow.
Was checking the wiki and the gem beforehand to see if there is anything preventing me from playing it as a Deadeye.
Well, there is, but it's not mentioned anywhere: chain apparently doesn't work on the secondary projectiles, so Deadeye is kind of fucking useless if you wanted to play it for free chain.
I'm really not interested in levelling another class, don't see the point in playing Pathfinder in SSF and the only character I would maybe want to respec is a) a Trickster and b) has the wrong bandit(not a big deal but still)
This pisses me off.

Is there any reason at all to ever play deadeye atm? I mean "free" chain, is anyone even using a chain support gem?

Tailwind -> Clearspeed&Evasion(if you go evasion stack), If you actually play bowster, then loads of accuracy in tree and projectile dmg, free far shot is neat too. But yeah, its bit one dimensional in a way.
To be honest, was thinking going for rain of arrows this league, must be quite cheap due being non-meta. Weirdly enough, chain support still is hard to justify on any character, even deadeye which gets 10% more damage per chain. -10% damage at lvl 21 with... net gain of 20% witch is just low. I guess something like magma orb would still jizz all over that chain support, anything else probably wont.

Both Deadeye and Raider seem like odd ascensions. Deadeye for what was mentioned and Raider because their advantages are being increasingly moved into itemization.
Though I still think I really like the Raider class. The stacked evasion + immunity to ailments + phasing is pretty fun.

I like Raider quite a bit in low-mid level gear setups. Not having to generate frenzies / onslaught on gear, and having it reliably against bosses, frees up a lot of decision making in gearing.
Overall I think it's interesting how highly regarded evasion is these days. It's spent most of PoE history in the dumps, turns out if you buff the numbers up enough (+dodge, ghost shroud, etc), it eventually is pretty reliable. I wonder if Armor will be able to have some sort of renaissance

It's excellent for bow attack builds (minus Ele Hit maybe) and also a decent option for things like Spec Throw if you are on a budget/league start. Can also play spell builds with it. Overall pretty good in my opinion.

it's quite good for dex stacking builds too
|
anyone played Soulwrest before? I'm wondering how it compares to other minion builds (SRS, spectres, etc) in terms of clear speed, smoothness of play, boss capabilities

While levelling a new dude I actually found him: the man, the myth, the legend aul.

So, my dedicated bosser (whispering ice occultist) died in like 1m vs uber elder thanks to some balls to the face. Granted it was my first attempt ever, it was still pretty pitiful
then I send in my starter / mapper (bane trickster) and it's a breeze. I don't really know what to think. I wasted like a bunch of time and money on that bosser when it turns out my starter was better all along
pretty bad jewel too xD

Same here, well I knew the char would probably be worse (Vaal-Storm Call, later respecced to Vaal-Spark + Stormbrand)... His gear is way more expensive and i probably would have to Invest several Exalts more to get him to a decent HP pool....
And Bossing is still worse... Clear is pretty awesome tho, but he moves slower so he's probably not even better here... /sad

What kind of defenses was yr Bane Trickster running - life/evasion with dodge, or ...? Mulling over taking my EB/MoM life + spell dodge Trickster into Uber Elder though I've been holding out waiting on finding a T3 Factory (global crit craft recipe) to multi-mod an endgame weapon, but no dice in the past ~8 temples (T2 room so many times, twice with a T2 "upgrade adjacent rooms at T3" next to it zzzzz). Trying to decide if I have the will-to-live to get 36 challenges this league in SSF - I've hit 500 beasts and am ~70% of the way towards the "complete maps with bonuses" grinds, but haven't found a Cortex yet, haven't found a Mortal Hope yet (not sure if it's me finding less Light Lockboxes / Putrid Cloisters this league but I feel like I usually find more of the Mortal Hope div card) in ~40 Atziri runs (no Atziri's Steps either, so crafted a Deafening Essence of Spite (8% spell dodge) onto some fractured 30% MS boots for a budget version of them). Haven't been focusing memory modifiers since w/limited playtime recently I've been more or less running dailies for sulphite/Betrayal/Alva, but I'm still missing the "headhunter" and "div cards + ???" modifiers. At least the Flashback league should let the Perandus challenge get finished off.

You can see my char here: poe.ninja build link
I wasn't using Essence Worm for the fight, had a good hp/mana/es ring, so my defenses were a bit higher. Basically my build uses all the defenses - Life, MoM (mana), ES, dodge, evasion, phys reduction. The only part it is lacking is reliable recovery, but ghost shroud + other small sources (ED) are enough. The main power of the build is it can "fire and forget" and is very mobile. Meaning I can cast my rotation, then spend the rest of the time dodging. My WI build sucked because it was too stationary, very good when I can facetank and terrible when it cant
I'm not sure how lucky I was, but I got the headhunter and div card modifiers after a month without buying. I've actually gotten the headhunter modifier twice now, so it's rare but not super duper rare? If you want you can just transfer a char to SSC and pay2win whatever challenges you have left

Trying to decide if I should bother with Flashback or save my ideas for next real league
|
If anyone hasn't seen it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/bjmndc/an_update_from_chris/ --- worth the read
Flashback is overall a skip from me but I'll probably play enough for the Cadiro challenge. Will be around for the first few days.
I suppose if anyone wanted to play with Eternity Shroud, this would be the time to, because it will probably (read: should) get nerfed like crazy

Oh, ta for that - you've a little more HP than I do (https://poe.ninja/challengessf/builds/char/Haasts/ObaydZakani), but not a lot; a decent chunk more evasion, but other things probably shake out. Do you have perma-2 Endurance charges with your shield? I should give Uber Elder a go - I need to get better at firing of quick "snapshots" of Divine Ire rather than standing to channel and getting whomped, ha; my most comfortable UE kill was on a cold DoT Occultist last league, and I'd imagine Bane would feel pretty similar.
Interesting open letter from Chris, hmmmn.
