This thread makes me feel old :[ growing up with Final Fantasy 1, I don't see how 4 and 6 couldn't be topping the charts unless the people voting didn't grow up playing them. They were so amazingly magical for their time.

I've played almost every single game so I'll post my feelings on them:
TLDR Version: 4 = 6 > 10 = 13 > 7 = 8 = 9 = 10-2 > remainder
FF1: Good game for the first, compared to modern day RPGs it'll feel very grindy. But as the first of its kind it was a good intro, large world, exploration, class advancement and so forth.
FF2: Was an "okay" game, neat story but the system of specializing in each weapon and so forth was very tedious
FF3: Only one I did not fully complete, got it for my iphone though so I'll finish it at some point. Has the job system though
FF4 (2 in US): Great game. First game to have a really dynamic cast of playable characters that you felt very connected with. Evolution of the main character in particular was really interesting
FF4-Interlude: This was a short (like less than 3 hours) connection between 4 and the After Years. Was alright, just way too short.
FF4-After-Years: Still playing this currently, seems to be an interesting spin on the FF4 world. Since all previous characters have obviously grown up and you are playing with their children. Or grown up versions of Palom and Porom.
FF5: Yay fan translation versions. This was a great game also, really heavy into the class/job system and had an interesting story. Not as good as 4 in my opinion but a strong contendor.
FF6: My absolute favorite, huge repertoire of characters. Never a 'sole' main character. A changeable story to an extent with some of your choices. You were able to do many side missions so to speak and retain and pick up new characters, unique equipment, abilities and so forth. I really liked how they introduced the characters with special abilities. Staying away from simple/pure classes like white/black mage. Celes = my favorite.
FF7: This was a great game also, I don't think it was as "AMAZING" as everyone else but still a solid game. A very indepth and expansive story. Tons of side missions, optional boss fights. Materia system was very unique and fun to mess around with. The story was the main driving point in this game for me. Just because it was also so massively confusing!
FF7-Crisis-Core: Almost beat this one, just a more expansive story take on the FF7 world and where it all started from. How Cloud is Cloud and why Sephiroth is how he was. Though the battle system and all pretty much was pulled from Kingdom Hearts.
FF8: Good game, good story. I hate the junction system though, I'm glad they did away with it. But a very fun game with unique and believable characters.
FF9: Fun game! I'm glad they went back on a traditional style and look compared to the futuristic/modern styles of 7 and 8. Learning skills from an item based system was interesting. Still retaining some of the classic class archetypes in black/white mage, dragoon, thief and all. Fun game and a good story too.
FF-Tactics: Great!! Classic strategy RPG game meets great FF story telling. Class system was all key here and very fun. Even though Orlandu was vastly overpowered, still a great and fun game.
FF10: Fantastic game. One of the best story telling experiences I had in the FF series. Felt attachments to the characters and even though it wasn't exactly a free-range world game like the SNES ones, it still had a way of drawing you in. Greatly enjoyed this one, highly recommended.
FF10-2: Good game as well, back to the job system but retaining a fun take on the FF10 world. Not as story driven as the original, but more of a follow-up and lets see how the world has changed. Not as terrible as people think, but its definitely not comparable to any previous FF game. Unique to its own and just a different style. I enjoyed it
FF11: Has too much to explain but a very good game for the MMO player. Vast world, team based, and plenty of story.
FF12: Have not played enough to extensively review. Good game I have heard though.
FF13: I enjoyed it. Good story and selling points. Battle system was fun as well. The game has its flaws and was to be expected, launching on a new system always has its ups and downs. I expect 13-2 to bring it back around though.
FF14: Flawed from the beta and launch, I hope the team can bring it back around though!

I'm a fan of the older FFs. I'm not sure which one it is referred to in this thread but the North American FFII was a lot of fun.
Again, unsure of the "proper" names but the North American FFVI was also an awesome game.
FFX is the best of the "newer" style FFs, I think. Sweet Jesus though, FFXIII is just horrible. Maybe I grew up or something but the emo-riddled, high-pitched squealing, voice overs and the saccharine plot and dialogue just annoyed me to the point where an hour in, I said "Screw this, I'm out." I just couldn't bring myself to listen to it any longer. FFX was pushing that whiny envelope but FFXIII takes it to an entirely different level.

Really huge fan of the series. I've played all of them through several times. I find myself enjoying the older games of the series more. Playing challenge runs of the games is quite entertaining, hardest one I did was Final fantasy V solo white mage. Overall great series and can't wait for FFXIII-2

There is (usually) a deep underlying story that should be the players' drive to advance in the game rather than seeing it as a series of steps to take just to get to the end. Of course there will be periods spent leveling up, but it should not be considered the central goal over developing the story.

I think it's possible to make it through those three in two months at the rate you propose. As long as you don't get too sidetracked or spend too much time just grinding out levels.

I honestly LOVE the FF series. Though I haven't played many of 'em, I've viewed TONS.
But I'm so curious, as to how the previous games before X were so enjoyable.......? There was absolutely no talking involved in those games. Only during X and beyond did actual character voices become available to the game.
I watched my brother play IX, and though I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, it certainly lacked the need of voices in order to further enhance the epicness of a game. :/

They are very enjoyable. The same why that people enjoy reading books as opposed to watching television. Sometimes the effect is more in the delivery of the moment, rather than just the voices that accompany it.
FF4 and FF6 (2 and 3 in the US) were some of the best story drive Final Fantasy games in my opinion and they weren't even in 3D let alone having voice-acting involved in any such way. The story telling was just that good. You felt connected to your characters, you hated the bad guys, you got teared up when your favorite character had a heart-wrenching moment.
It's all in the delivery.

Atleast for me the voices are not needed for the game to be enjoyable (atleast in FFX the voice acting was so bad). There is also nostalgia involved in earlier games. For me the first Final Fantasy game was FF7 and at that time it was absolutely awesome.
Some players prefer good graphics, but I'm fine as long as the story & gameplay is good. FFX-> never get me as excited storywise as the awesomeness of FF6 & 7.

It's easier/faster to do though, since the hard cartridges are so rare, on an emulator, with the speedup button.
It's a huge time killer on the good ol' NES though (I created my own repro cart using this sites instructions: http://54.org/sage/condev/ff2cartproject/) and took a week to play through I think.
An easier way to get an affordable (read:not prototype) copy for the NES is to buy the famicom version of FF2, then get a famicom->NES from gyromite or something (it's in japanese, but it works, that's how I also got FF3 to play on the NES).

I meant easy as in I tend to flee from battles a lot and still beat bosses too easy. I actually started a low level FF6 game and got past the crane boss before losing interest. That was pretty hard though .

FFIX is the definitive FF game for me. I just loved the story and the characters, and of course the amazing music. The game had a lot of exploration involved, and the story was captivating. I also think IX has the best ability and equipment system out of all the games)
The, the order after that (I haven't played every one)
FFX ( I loved it, but I loved IX just a bit more) FFVIII (A great game, the characters weren't very well designed though, especially Squall seemed to have no personality whatsoever, which is quite bad for a main character) FFXIII (too linear, the gameplay in general feels restricted) FFX-2 (Dear god this game was bad, not really much good to say about it)

I thought the battle system in FFXIII was the best of any final fantasy. But in terms of mood, and how I felt while playing it, FFIV is definitely my favorite. Not sure what it is, but I got nerdchills in every scene that had both + Show Spoiler + (Doubt I need to spoiler this, but just in case. ) Cecil and Kain. :D

FFX is my favorite FF and my favorite game of my childhood, I will probably never have the same attachment or experience of total emotional immersion for a story and its characters ever again. It made me cry and that is definitely not the norm for me. Also I never hated a character so much as Seymour.
