okay I found some stuff on it...jeez you would think that Square Enix would put more quality time within the game. It's not just about fancy graphics or slapping on the FF brand ya know.

BUT, there is suppose to be a so called "golden patch" released this month. Its going to bring back all the classic FF jobs, fix the entire combat system and revamp everything. SE is working really really close with the community on this, they even have a list of things they want to change and when they'll try to get it done by. They seem to be on schedule pretty much. I don't play now but its really interesting to follow just to see how the community and game devs are working together.

It isn't without its flaws though. Cloud is to me honestly the weakest character in the game. He has a story behind him, but not much of a personality. Everyone else is so vibrant and interesting. Tifa tries to support and understand Cloud and compete with Aeris. Barret tries to save the world from the slums and coming to terms with his past in Corel, support his daughter and deal with the guilt of his terrorist actions. Aeris tries to live normally knowing she is something so radically different from everyone else and accepting her fate. Cid, is one of the few people around with a good heart, but with the most hostile demeanor, even one upping Barret, trying to do good for the world. Cait Sith starting as a Shinra spy and eventually sympathizing with AVALANCHE and betraying Shinra entirely while trying to gain everyone's trust. Red XIII was also rather weak in my opinion, and Yuffie and Vincent aren't really as involved, but I love them both. Even the Turks are great in all their comic relief. Cloud is just quiet and mysterious, plain if you ask me. Materia was fun and interesting though it could have been improved by making more physical attack oriented materia besides a few overpowered ones at the end of the game. That's all I can really complain about though. Everything else in this game is nigh-perfect. I think I'd agree with what you said here. I really did like most of the game, it's just that the main protagonist and antagonist were incredibly uninteresting. This wouldn't be much of a problem if it was like FFXII where Van is utterly irrelevant to the actual plot, but that wasn't the case. The game revolved around Cloud and Sephiroth but they were both such weak characters. Sephiroth in particular was such a disappointing villain because he came right after Kefka, who was probably the greatest villain in the whole series. The whole tension that drove the game revolved around two lunatics that didn't really have much meaning. Sephiroth was basically a pathetic psycho with an Oedipus complex the entire game. That just doesn't make a very interesting villain. But, I have to admit. The first disc of FFVII was pretty much perfect.

My personal favorites were 6 - I beat this at least 10 times. Only 1 flaw imo, it shouldn't have let every character learn magic. Also vanish/doom tricks made it too easy if you discovered it, or if you learned how to joker's doom, which I didn't learn until after emulators. 4 - It was really well done in the DS remake. 7 - very good, the materia system was nice 9 - solid game 11 - pretty fun, but mmo's take too much time for me, played for a couple months then quit 8 - I just played most of the game with Squall, killed off the 2 party members, to lvl him fast and used his super or ran 10 - ok, but couldn't get into it. 5 - pretty fun, didn't play until on emulator years later 3 - played on ds, was mindless fun 1 - lol cute 2 - lol bad 12-14 - never played Tactics series are cool, probably belong near the top, maybe behind ff9. I could never play them more than once, and every battle was way too slow for me. ChronoTrigger probably belongs at #2.

So if you just want to get an idea of what you missed out on, you can watch him play. I saw some of his ff6 and chronotrigger, since it was my favorite game. HCBaily does a lot of Let's plays, which i have seen almost all of his. I highly recommend watching some let's plays by him if you want to see someone play through the game without missing much but also bringing fun commentary to the game. The best part about his let's play is he doesn't read out the lines of characters and actually just comments on the game play/why hes doing something. edit: hes also doing FFTactics after he finishes Lufia 2 and i cannot wait for it as tactics is one of my more favorite FF)

I'm on FF9 now. Disc 3. Been putting off finishing it for several months. I'm really hoping I just wake up one day, feel motivated (or inspired) to play it, and finish it. I hate having it sit around unfinished. Not as bad as FF8, which I played up until Ultimecia's Castle, and then didn't beat it for another 1-2 years. 2 just did the whole RPG thing "right" in my opinion. Great characters, interesting stat system, cool weapons, and the traditional spells. 5 gave me all the same good feelings that 2 did, plus it had motherfucking GILGAMESH and the battle on the big bridge. 2 and 5 baby. Awesome games.

I keep hearing that it sucks. what they do wrong with it? okay I found some stuff on it...jeez you would think that Square Enix would put more quality time within the game. It's not just about fancy graphics or slapping on the FF brand ya know. The list of problems is really far far too long to list. I'm not just saying that for effect either. They had to fire their stubborn producer for a new one now they constantly release Q and As as well as small patches as an apology to their fan base. Before they fired the head producer, they had completely ignored the fan sites criticism during beta and kept making stupid excuses until they realized their game is terrible and no body likes it. All the current players are all playing solely because they expect the game to release a megapatch that will magically fix it. Every news article on all the fan sites are dedicated to Q and As from producers, patch notes, and speculation on possible future changes etc etc etc. none of them would play if the game was guaranteed to remain in its current state Some random problems: 1) interface and combat was really laggy and unreactive 2) No auction house. I thought it was just for release so economy wouldnt be fucked with but the producers were really just stupid 3) stupid repair system 4) very limited inventory 5) no quests. no town mission. at the time, there were no notorious monsters. essentially you farmed just to farm just to farm some more. as soon as i asked my self, "why am i doing this and what am i looking forward to?" i immediately realized that i've experienced everything the game had to offer (almost nothing) 6) fatigue system. enough said. most retarded idea ever created 7) partying is terrible. at the time, the experience was worse and no class had a very defined role. producers were stubborn saying "we didn't want the typical tank healer damage dealer dynamic blah blah blah" 8) did i mention there were no quests? there was nothing to do except beat up mobs all day and craft. crafting was fun but that is the game's only improvement upon ffxi 9) combat system was really boring and just bad. they are adding auto attack and some other dynamics to the combat system to make it more like ffxi though I used to read zam and ffxivcore and there are far better critiques of the game than mine. Far far far more flaws I'm positive i'm forgetting so thats just a short list. The game's only saving grace: -Beautiful graphics and scenery -the crafting/harvesting system is amazing. it was actually fun and not at all a grind (at least for me) I played it in beta and played it during the first month or so of release. Its so bad and unrefined that square has repeatedly given away free months to all subscribers (I havent kept up to date but they've given away at least 3 months to all subscribers, i think significantly more by now actually) The game was so bad, I unsubscribed and quit, regardless of my many months of free time I had been given

By the way, surprised no one has mentioned the old ass gameboy Final Fantasy games. They were decent, I guess, but didn't hold a candle to zelda.

@ the person who asked me about Lost Odyssey, sorry I didn't answer before. Got hung up. Lost Odyssey was a poor game, in my opinion. The battle system was alright, but the story was awful (like they extracted all the interesting bits out of Planescape Torment). It was just a generic "IMMA GONNA GETCHU EVIL GUY" plot, sprinkled with dull characters. Not to mention it was overly difficult (tanks! knights! godzilla!). idk, for me, the effort=! reward
