It was just a generic "IMMA GONNA GETCHU EVIL GUY" plot, sprinkled with dull characters. Not to mention it was overly difficult (tanks! knights! godzilla!). idk, for me, the effort=! reward
Fair enough, so long as you admit to loving the thousand years of dreams sequences
I thought Gongora was an uninteresting villain, but loved Kaim for not being a spiky-haired angst-ridden teen, and Seth. Hated Mack and Cooke, but the rest were bearable.
I loved the difficulty though. I think FFVII's only major flaw was how easy it was to pwntrain everything. So few RPGs are really about strategy like Lost Odyssey is.

omfg, I just started up FFIX again... the music at the beginning is enough to nostalgia me into playing again.
What a fucking awesome game.

i'm sad that people haven't played ff1
oh the memories of grinding on ogres to get that silver sword from elfland
and that hideous ice cave with cockatrice that petrify you when you're 2 steps away from exiting with the floater stone

favourites:
FFVI FFXII
I might be biased picking FF VI as my favourite because it was also the first one I played. Back in grade school I got chrono trigger on a whim for my birthday cause the box looked cool. I was hooked on rpgs, super mario was all in the past for me at that point. After Chrono trigger a friend recommended ffVI as a game like chrono trigger except the graphics were worse. I rented it on this vague and unflattering description and was instantly hooked as I watched the title screen and listened to the incredible opening score, that little melody is still firmly implanted in my mind 15 years later.
For years, FF VII would've been my #1 ff but I think my perspective has matured a little over the years and after 13 successive final fantasies and multiple play throughs of both ffVII and FFVI. FFVI is a surprisingly mature storyline with adult characters, a big shift in target audience for a 16 bit sprite game aimed at kids. Almost every other FF has main characters who are exclusively teenagers. FFVI didn't really have a main character, you could focus on some characters and not ignore others, especially later on in the world of ruin, this sort of freedom isn't seen in later final fantasies with their stricter narratives, not that that's a bad thing, I loved ffXIII's narrative even though it was incredibly narrow, it also fleshed out the characters much deeper then any other ff.
FFVI is my fav for the story, it also has a solid combat side that I love. FFXII is my 2nd fav because I loved the fighting system and exploration. I find that final fantasy games seem to have this struggle between story and combat. They do brilliant on one end of the spectrum but fail on the other. FFVIII's draw system was terrible, 30 second animations for the summons, hitting lvl 99 and still sucking ugh, the combat killed it for me. FFXII was the perfect storm of combat elements coming together for me. You got to write interesting ai routines for your dudes, and I found this very fun and engaging, because you'll be constantly finding a better script. Scripting let you take out the tedious part of the game, issueing the exact same commands and focus on the overall strategy of the encounter, jumping in and inssuing individual commands when needed.

I think there actually weaknesses in the game (ie ice does bonus damage to water elemental whereas lit doesn't, lol).
Also, just looked it that the crown guards are actually called "Wizard" (funny since it did soooo much in physical damage). The "Mage" was even more annoying, as it would always strike first in packs of six and RUB you to death before you could do anything.
Buying the proring saved my sanity.

There's A LOT of grinding :/ Depends on the classes you chose. If you have fighters, it gets quite easier as you acquire more armor/weapons. Mages will still be squishy until you get the gold chain (lategame). To grind faster, you can try the power penninsula (check google). Theives are worthless.
Thank you VERY much :D I've bought a lot of cabins, almost 100 potions, and pure, and will go there and grind some soon. Then I will go and buy some nice equipment and then move on with the story. I just received the key. The game is actually getting quite interesting now.

Aww, don't grind too hard for FF1. Part of the fun is pushing yourself to beat the game with as few levels attained as possible :O
|
FFVII and FFXIII were the only ones that I actually played non-stop until I beat them.
I beat FFXII finally recently. I played through once got to Dr. Cid, then quit for a few months and started a new game where I got to Giruvegan, then quit for a few months. Then I started another new game and finally beat it, I thought it was amazing. FFXIII's unoriginal character names don't really turn me off, I loved the story. FFXII was also great, but FFVII was my favorite of the three.
I also dabbled into FFX but quit when I got to that first boss where you actually have everyone in your party. It didn't have me hooked the way VII and XIII did.

Elements are relevant in that they affect the Power and Accuracy of attacks, both physical and magical. They have the ability to increase Attack and Chance to Hit of Weapons (though this is bugged and doesn't work on the NES), and may increase OR decrease the Effectivity and Chance to Hit for Magic (and, for some spells, prevent functioning altogether). For example, attacking a ZOMBIE with the Flame Sword (should) give you +4 Attack and increase Chance to Hit by 40, and getting hit with RUB while wearing a Pro Ring will reduce its Base Chance to Hit to 0. If something is non-elemental, it just behaves as normal without any bonuses or penalties.
Also, just looked it that the crown guards are actually called "Wizard" (funny since it did soooo much in physical damage). The "Mage" was even more annoying, as it would always strike first in packs of six and RUB you to death before you could do anything. that stupid wizard. he doesn't even cast magic! i was always happy when i only had to fight 3 of them instead of 5.
RUB you to death sounds funny. good ol' NES translation days.

Final Fantasy VI is amazing, my favorite. One of the things was the combat really was really good, the constant fights weren't horrible, and it had GREAT tunes. OCRemix has some amazing remixes on the stuff, terra's theme is one of my favorite video games songs ever, also searching for friends.
World of Ruin is awesome for how open it was, and in general it just hooked me.

The Final Fantasy series basically dominated my childhood gaming. Awesome storys combined with amazing characters and epic music just made for extremely good games. FF7 and FF8 are my favorites and 9 directly follows them. Great memories

lol the tent thing threw me off as well. I am coming from FFVII so I find FF9 MUCH harder and more technical. Very fun though. How far are you in?
I am going to Cleyra Settlement soon and all my toons are lvl 20. I grinded a lot to learn every ability that I could.
Which toons do you hate the most?
I find Quina to be useless even with White Wind (barely heals) and Zidane is just DPS. Vivi has strong spells but so squishy. My favorite right now is Steiner with Blood Sword (heals 500+ HP while doing 500+ DMG) and Dagger (cuz she has auto reflect and loudmouth so nothing can touch her, AND she heals like a beast).
My toons are still split in different regions so I am sad. I want to get rid of some of them and Make Zidane, Vivi, Dagger, and Steiner my main. Someone please tell me Quina, Zidane, and Freya get better cuz they are just so boring right now. I learned every Blue Magic ability for Quina up to this point and none of them are reliable or do shit damage (half the time they miss). I was so excited for White Wind and Matra Magic but White Wind only heals 200 health and Matra Magic always misses. FML.
Still, I am having fun and I miss Steiner and Bloooood Sword.

Lost Odyssey didn't have the greatest plot, but the characters actually had incredible depth, especially Kaim, if you bothered to read the memories and the sequences. The game easily had some of the best characters of any RPG I've ever played. I also strongly disagree with it being overly difficult, I wish more RPGs were at least that difficult. I'm so tired of your typical RPG being absurdly easy. Hell, I never even had a game over once on my first FFIX or FFX playthrough, and only one or two in FFXIII. The games are just so easy and trivial.
I remember reading a while back in an issue of Game Informer about building the perfect RPG, and they chose various elements from existing RPGs to use as a guide. Lost Odyssey was on the list for its characters.

All the characters get better eventually, although Quina is always a bit lacking. She does get some decent spells, like Mighty Guard, but she'll never be great. Freya is easily capable of hitting damage cap with some abilities she learns later, and she's quite good. Make sure you have her in the front row though, not the back row. I rarely use jump at all, having her in the front row auto-attacking is better. Her Reis Wind spell is pretty good. Zidane gets a lot better too, a lot of it is equipment based. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're looking for the best party you can make, the one you have listed isn't it.

Very good point about FF7 being able to just own everything. Around the end of disc 1 you start feeling invincible because you have Restore All, something Guard, Beta, etc. At disc 2 you are pretty much unkillable with multiple Enemy Skill Materia :D
Then, when you get that 4x materia thingy, Ultima, and Knights of the Round...you can beat Sephiroth with your eyes closed in 2 hits.
But this is exactly why I loooooooved FF7. It allowed you to be badass and just rape everything like Cloud rightfully should. However, most people would miss many many items if they did not follow a guide like me so it wouldn't be as easy, probably much harder.
but yeah, towards the end I didn't need to use anyone but Cloud

For me, this made the game dull, and I just wanted to skip all the actual playing and just watch the story unfold. Would have been a lot better as a movie.
If there's no challenge involved, I get bored easily. Games should be difficult enough to at, minimum, be interesting.
