Woah, no thread at all for these games? Since there isn't a new thread for Metro: Last Light I'll throw that in here too. But first the original...
What is Metro 2033?
Metro 2033 is based off an extremely popular Post-Apocalyptic book written in Russia that came out in 2010, and actually keeps to the story of said book. The story is essentially post nuclear war, except not hundreds of years after like in that of Fallout -- but in the direct years after. Only 10-20 after in the Russian Metro's under the destroyed city of Moscow. Influenced heavily by STALKER, and still very original in its own right it's one of the best Single Player FPS's in the past few years, and easily the most underrated one. I would even go as far to say it's the best Linear FPS since Half Life 2. That may be my fanboy for this game speaking, but I have not had this much genuine fun with a game in forever.
Far from it, Johnny. The gunplay is unique....to say the least. Again, I'm going to have to refer back to STALKER -- it is not forgiving at all. Going in guns blazing is not always the best options, and when you have to, it is far from easy. The linearity works for this game, due to it being in a Russian Metro System and, not going to give anything away, but where you're going and how you're getting there makes it work extremely well. It's not a fallback.
Why is it good?
Mainly? The atmosphere. The music is great, the lighting is great, the graphics are the most demanding since Crysis in terms of PC's, and the way the game is handled is amazing. It's not a dead world, and how things are handled make sense. There is not a single thing that happens that does not make some semblance of sense. You're not using Dollars are currency, you're using bullets as currency. You are using the old style of trading. I give you four shotgun shells for ten .357 rounds. I give you this Military Ammunition for that X expensive item. So forth. That's not end, of course.
The way how your gas mask needs to be constantly replaced with filters when you are using it. If you wait too long, your mask begins to fog up as your breathing increases and your aim becomes more jagged. Eventually leading to you falling over and dying if you do not react. The way you need to constantly keep track of time, your batteries, your supplies. The underlying conflict between the Communists, Nazi's and Capitalists in the Metro along with the waiting threat beyond.
I'm not going to base the enjoyment off a game off the story and atmosphere, however. The game is also solid. The stealth mechanics are a bit iffy, yet still freaking amazing every time I do it. The interaction capability with the world is pretty nice, and the choices you make actually matter. Of course it's no open a dialogue and choose GOOD NEUTRAL EVIL. It's on the spot decision making that you don't even know you are making. There is no time to think what makes the most sense, but what you got to do now 99% of the time.
Also, to add on randomly, no Two Weapon syndrome.
Launch Trailer:
So now that I got that out of the way
Metro: Last Light
The sequel! Which I'm assuming is based on the books Metro: 2033's sequel Metro 2034. I can not know since it's still not translated to English.
Gameplay Trailer:
One thing I can tell if anything? They fixed the fucking Stealth sections at last. You can now actually walk up behind someone and knife them silently. I'm stoked.
Also, one of the trailers said "Hanza", so it's definitely the same setting and possibly the same Metro. So that's why I think it's Metro 2033's actual sequel, not just a separate story.
I have to say, Metro 2033 was heavily influenced by the book but does only a decent job of sticking to it. Theres really not that much action in the books.
That being said I absolutely LOVED the game Metro 2033, played through several times, loved the ending and eagerly await the sequel.
Damn that game was scary. Not the Dead Space BOO AAAHAHH! ARE YOU SCARED YET DID I STARTLE YOU? Kind of scary, no.. the true first time you played Resident Evil 1 when you were 10 and you were scared to go into the next room scary. The oh jesus I don't want to go any farther because I am going to get eaten by a goddamn monster scary.
Damn good games, can't wait for the sequel (And Stalker 2)
metro 2033 was soooooooooooo good. I love games that just totally immerse you in a super dark and creepy atmosphere. I'm on my second play through at the moment, I want to see the good ending :3
Kinda sucks that you need a pretty decent machine to play it, I feel like if you played on low settings you'd miss out on the detail. Eagerly awaiting sequel.
I am interested in Metro 2033, but I don't want to play it until I upgrade my computer from a 5770 to a 7xxx generation ATI card. Currently waiting for the next generation of graphic card before upgrading.
If I am to play that game, I want to do it with graphic on the absolute highest possible setting. Unfortunately a 5770 will not be able to run it fully, not with DirectX11 enabled anyway.

DX11 is overrated. What resolution are you rocking? It's not THAT demanding, but I'm assuming you got like 1900x1200? I rocked 45 FPS on DX10 at I think like 1400xsomething at max settings with x4 AA with a 4870 and a Dual Core on a friends computer.

I have 1680x1050. 4870=5770 in term of graphic power with 5770 being slightly superior. I also have a pretty powerful quad core. If I go with DX10, I am confident my computer can handle it.
The sad part is that due the console's limitation, the gaming companies are not truly pushing for greater graphics and making very little use out of the modern graphic cards. Crysis, a 5 year old game, is still the king of graphics if you use one of the user modded custom settings.
Metro 2033 is the only game that really tried to make use out of DX11.
Metro 2033 was a very good game, I didn't even know that there was a sequel coming. I can highly recommend the first game to anyone who likes Fallout/Stalker style post-apocalyptic setting. It is indeed super atmospheric and there were some creatively creepy parts + Show Spoiler +
like that monster in the library that you had to maintain eye contact with or else it would attack you
and none of that monsters jumping out of nowhere in your face nonsense. The game has its flaws though, the stealth mechanics are pretty broken and it was a bit too short. Also it owned my graphics card.
I loved the first game. Just the right mix of scary/creepy atmosphere and intense action. I actually felt a wave of relief every time I reached a station. It's like Ah, safety at last!... for a little while.
biggest problem that i find with metro 2033 is that it's a linear stalker if it had open world with exploration (even though it's a giant subway system) it would have been much better imo

i played through half of metro with a 5770 and i couldnt run it any higher than 1680 res with settings on normal. then i got a 6850 and played the rest through on 1900 and high settings :D

not every game needs to be open world. games can be more focused if its not sandbox, graphics better gameplay better, etc etc. and to metro 2033s benefit it works.
