I don't understand the low turnout for an SBO qual, although I suppose the amount of people that can realistically make the tournament isn't that big. That, or now that the US can compete at the top level there's not as much interest in a single elim, single game tournament with no prize money.

With flights from WC to new york costing 500 bucks nowadays its just not justifiable, and for people in say, florida, or midwest its still too much.

I would assume a large factor is that a lot of players just don't enjoy playing AE.

Not that large, a lot of the top east coast players actually showed up at the venue, they just didn't play in the tournament (probably mostly because of passport issues). I just wish more had done same as Latif did in the west coast qualifiers, i.e. sign up and play anyways, but give the spot to a runner-up in case you win.

I've noticed that the trials only work on SSF4 and not AE? What would you recommend a total noob like me to do to get good at this game? Step by step list? :p Here are some useful tutorials: http://www.youtube.com/user/TBirdSF4#p/u/8/Qa4GJQFYM1s http://www.youtube.com/user/mingtongzhi#g/c/2C2A0F3BE74B54F6 http://www.youtube.com/user/VesperArcade#p/c/744144A71C67D816 Then head over there: http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?forums/super-street-fighter-iv-arcade-edition.10/ to pick up some combos for your character. Be prepared to practice a lot. (training mode) and lose a ton (online). It all looks so easy when you watch pros, but there is so much to learn. I still learn new stuff every day or two. =D

I've noticed that the trials only work on SSF4 and not AE? What would you recommend a total noob like me to do to get good at this game? Step by step list? :p Pick a character and do its trials to get the movelist down. I would also suggest to do other characters trials to get better at execution. Learn to block. Understand crossups and overheads. After knockdown if opponent jumps, block first high and second lown or if they don't jump usually you want to block low, but be careful of overheads. Crossups hit behind your hitbox so you need to block them in the "wrong" direction. Learn your characters best poke and try to learn simple combo to get damage of it. Poke in to special is good enough to start with. Poke is a move with good range and is hard to punish. Then go online and its just trial and error. If you get punished for doing some move you probably dont want to do that anymore. Dont mash srk. If you hit with it its ok and you might wanna do it sometimes, but any player can bait it out from mashers. Dont bunnyhop. Jumping is fast way to get in but use it wisely. Try everything out and see how it works and how it gets punished, also try to use focus attack on different situations. Also learn to use dash. Try to get in the poke range and land hits with your combo. After knockdown go for crossup and land it again and then you might wanna do empty jumps in to throws to mix it up or just empy jumps to bait shoryuken. This is some serious noob stuff but its enough to start with. Playing makes you better. Don't be afraid to lose. And i would suggest to go to ranked the competition there is much fairer than in endless ![]()

It only really made sense for true NYC locals to show up to it. With flights from WC to new york costing 500 bucks nowadays its just not justifiable, and for people in say, florida, or midwest its still too much. to add to this, even local players such as Sanford didn't participate because the expenses of going to Japan are too high. SBO quals only cover the plane ticket. Food and lodging are not covered. Plus, the current Japanese Yen to US dollar exchange rate is atrocious.

Oh I thought that it covered some food and lodging, man this qualifier and henry cen would have been in so much trouble if it weren't for twitchtv sponsoring 1000 dollars

During my games I've noticed I feel extremely predictable when I'm trying to approach my enemy. I usually do jumps forward or dive kicks. Does anybody have any recommendations on how to mix it more?

I usually do jumps forward or dive kicks. Does anybody have any recommendations on how to mix it more? using dive kicks to pressure an opponent is risky if not spaced properly. a big part of the reason the twins (read: yun) are so good is because of their ability to counter poke. counter poking is essentially baiting out an opponents normal, be it a crouch tech or footsie, and moving your character in and out of its active hitbox and countering their extended limb with your own normal. players will buffer special moves into their counter poke for a minor option select. if it connects, you got yourself a cr.mk-> lunge punch; if it whiffs, you're relatively nonpunishable if done right. this is what separates yuns like daigo from the norm. tl;dr - gotta have footsies.

I only know it involves hitting some other buttons to link your moves and increasing the hit chance its based off the game's move priority. go into training, and turn on attack input data. the premise is this: press a normal. then press a lower priority normal on the next frame. example: take MP and LP. press them at the same time, which move comes out? MP. MP has higher priority. when plinked properly, the inputs in training should look like this: x x x LP + MP MP x x x and a single MP should have come out. see how there's two MP's listed? that's a successful plink. you've tricked the game into giving you an additional frame in the link window. in order to plink a link such as yun's crouching MP -> standing MP, your inputs should look like this: cr.mp -> s.mp ~ s.lp (on next frame). you could use any lower priority normal for the plink. i just happen to use the buttons next to the normal i'm plinking 95% of the time. you might notice that it is impossible to plink standing jab. you are correct. standing jab's only link assistance is double tapping (which is a tiny bit harder) because of it being the lowest priority normal. hope this helps people who are confused by all the terrible tutorials on youtube.
