You do need to build your character to handle 2 or 3 different types of elemental damage, but the game is definitely beatable with any char, even with severe restrictions. In this tournament here for example, players were able to beat hardcore with every class (except barbarian, whose run was never finished) without investing any points in vitality.
I hadn't thought of dropping potions on the ground, that's a good idea. I have been spamming Meteor all over before the start of a fight but the fire damage isn't much anyways.
Thanks for the tips. :D

ya there are some pretty shitty ones in there, but some are good.
a general mechanics guide is the best imo. once u understand cb, ds, ow, fhr, fcr, etc u can pretty much build synergies, hit breakpoints and be good to go
now that u can reset skills too its easy to rape every diff, unless youre running around in blues in hell.

Also, I usually feel that a holy freeze merc is much more useful than a defense merc. You might want to consider switching.

It's more effective to shop for a knife of lower resistance because a knife can get up to lvl 3 lower resist charges, while wands can only get lvl 1. Level 3 lower resist is -41%, but after the 1/5 penalty only drops resistances 8. In his situation it's useless because the ancients will have a minimum of 110% in the relevant resistances, but this is still good advice in general (and would also be good for a lightning sorc v ancients).

Well I prbably shuldn't have played tday. Hly crap its almst 3!

Now I'm doing smite, with a life tap lvl3 wand. Does the level thing on wands and daggers apply for lifetap too?

Not really. Life tap always gets you 50% life leech. But duration and radius does increase with higher skill level.

the game is much easier with runewords, crafted items and charms compared to D2 classic xD

So an item can have level 1-5 life tap. The higher level your char is, the higher level the skill can be on the item.
edit: also, I'm gonna wait until you realize how shitty smite (or almost any single target ability) is for pvm. If you want to have fun, give your paladin a bow and use the frost or shock aura. Tis awesome!@.@ And add knockback from an item.

anyone playing on useast softcore ladder? add me tango127 currently a shitty barb barely slow pushing through nm lol

So I tried to play diablo 1 LAN with some friends, but I don't understand the game at all..
1) you move as slow as a reaver 2) when you die, you respawn with 1 life and 0 mana, so have to get healed before you do anything 3) you can hostile your allies at any point in the game (outside town) and kill them 4) I saved the best for last.. you drop all your gear on the floor when you die! what happens if you die but cant retrieve your body, you just lose all your shit? or on b.net people kill you and take your gear?
i really think I'm missing something, is there a patch/expansion/mod that fixes these problems?

because stealing gear is pointless, you could just download a char with perfect items if thats your thang. the d1 community is about having fun and playing together, not the rushfest of d2

I'm kind of worried that hell will cut life tap duration too much. It's the only thing making battles with champions, large numbers of monsters, and bosses really easy. On hell, a lvl5 lifetap lasts 6 seconds as opposed to the 10 that a lvl3 life tap lasts on nightmare. That combined with smite's horrible damage scaling, and hell difficulties great monster life scaling, may make progress with smite unbearably slow.

If you're going smite you should probably be getting a ton of CB no? I have two zeal/smite hybrids that feel obscenely overpowered. Granted, I haven't played since the patch but if you have a bunch of CB + life tap you should be fine.

CB + life tap basically lets you kill any boss in the game with very basic gear as long as you have a way to keep tap up.

read where the guy is at. he is not farming ubers with high end gear, he is questing through the game untwinked. in his situation, smite, and all melee skills really, are a terrible choice performance wise. In short, switch back to hammers if you want to avoid trouble. Diablo 2 is pretty terribly balanced build wise, especially if you dont have top end gear.

Smite really isn't going to cut it at all in hell, like others have said. Have you used up your respecs? If not I would highly suggest you get off smite and use either hammers or vengeance. Those are the only 2 pally builds worth their salt in hell.

melee skills need AR, but when you get the crazy AR like my fury druid, he lolstomps ubers or pvm in general his gear isnt expensive either, ik set [no helm], jalals, angelic rings and ammy 22k AR, gets to 30K with enchant from demon limb
skills are max werewolf, lycanthropy, feral rage, fury no summons as he goes for ubers, but you could max oak sage or HOW for life/AR if needed

1) press R to run, wear boots that increase run speed 2) every town has a person you can talk to that will give you full life and mana 3) not sure if that works if your in their party, which you can do by pressing P 4) if you cant retrieve your body, i.e. its under diablo, just log out and back in and your corpse will be in town, but you forfeit any of the gold you may have dropped, which is why its wise to deposit it into your stash
edit: just noticed you said Diablo 1, not sure if you meant 2 as this is the diablo 2 forum

Life tap durations aren't reduced based on a difficulty. Only AI affecting curses (Confuse, Attract, Dim Vision) are cut in duration according to Arreat Summit.
