Hi everybody!
Big thanks to rawrcakes and arcticvangard for helping set this up. You guys rock!
Player Posts/Updates + Show Spoiler +
Alright everyone, we've been talking about a succession game in the DF thread for a few days now and its finally happening! We have a base package set up and everything; I'm currently playing our fortress. So far everything is going good; I'll be posting it when I finish it. The base package (so you guys can try testing some stuff out) is located here. Remember not to play with the files in the package! I'll just be including my world file with my save in it, so just throw that folder into this and we'll be golden.
"You have arrived. After a Journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Your party of seven is to make an outpost for the glory of all gingmestthos. There are almost no supplies left, but with stout labor comes sustenance. Whether by bold, plow or hook, provide for your dwarves. You are expecting a supply caravan just before winter entombs you, but it is spring now. Enough time to delve secure lodgings, ere the giant jaguars get hungry. A new chapter of Dwarven history begins here at this place, Famthutusan, "Horsemurdered". Strike the earth!"
(Liquidmurdered wasn't an option unfortunately, lol)
Remember, if you take a turn with the fortress you can play for two IRL days or for one year (spring --> spring), whichever comes first. You have to write up a little story that tells everyone what happened during your reign! I'll be updating this OP with posts to peoples stories so casual players/readers can read up on whats happened. Try to make them fun/interesting!
Rules (they start applying after N3rV[green]'s turn:
Rules if you want to play: 1. If you are on the list, you are guarrenteed a time slot of one day after the previous player has posted his story to download and announce in the thread/a pm to me that you're playing. 2. If you do not post in the thread or contact me 24 hours after the player previous to you posted his/her update, you're probably afk and I will allow the thread to choose someone to play (usually the first post to say something like, "I call dibs on tnkted's save!" The 24 hour clock will be counted from the exact date/time of the previous player's post.
Rules for playing: 1. Once you have let everyone know that you are playing, you have one in game year (from spring -> spring), or you have two REAL LIFE days, whichever event happens first. This will be counted from the time of your post stating that you've received the save from the previous player or that you call dibs on the post. 2. You will write up a post explaining what happened (I suggest that you keep a log, thats what I did) and try to make it funny/interested. 3. You will chose a dwarf and name him after yourself. I also changed the profession of my dwarf to the 'First of the Ponies,' in the hope that later rulers would follow suit and become the second, third, and so on, but you guys can just let my guy be the sole member in that exclusive fraternity if you'd like (thats actually almost funnier). It would also be cool if we gave all of the noble roles to ourselves, but if one of you guys wants to choose a peasant working his way up for cinematic/story purposes, that would be totally cool as well. All I really care about is if you wrote a good story. 4. If the fort dies on your watch, post your log, apologise, and we give the previous player's save to the next player. 5. Please be timely and quick with your post/turn, or make sure you let the thread know you'll be late, and the reasons why. We'll decide whether to void your rule as a vote between me, Arctic Vangard and Plated.rawr (for this fortress only, next fortress we'll reevaluate this list with other players). If neither of the other two are online and there is a time delay (you're on your third day, etc) I'll just decide. Voided turns nullify all actions you made on the fortress, and the next player will use the previous players save.
Posting rules 1. Please put some effort into your post. As long as you post some sort of log we'll be happy; some people aren't natural writers and I understand that. Other people are happy and able to write themselves into the story as characters, but you certainly aren't obligated to do so if you don't think you can do it in a way you're proud of. As long as we have a log of the things that happened and the funny/interested stuff that happened along the way (I'm thinking of the merchants in boatmurdered who traveled through rampaging elephants, goblin territory, and death swamps to trade two rolls of cloth and a piece of cheese with the fortress). 2. You are not obligated to use stonesense if you can't get it to work. Regular ascii screenshots are fine. In fact, a mix between the two would be greatly appreciated. If you are using a special tileset, thats perfectly alright. The base package in the OP is meant as a base; if you would like to install some tilesets in there you're welcome to do so; it will not affect anyone else since you are only giving us the region1 file. Remember, alt-printscreen saves a screenshot of the open window in your c/p memory. Open paint and press ctrl V to paste the image. 3. Please at least attempt to use proper grammer/spelling when you post. All this means is throw your post into word and run spellcheck. Some people aren't natural english speakers etc and thats cool but people are going to read your posts and I'd like them to enjoy doing so.
Please post in the thread if you want to play.
Player list:
1. tnkted 2. rawrcakes 3. Iankill 4. N3rV[Green] 5. Fontong 6. Shawty 7. nttea 8. alak 9. SpectralFremen 9. Ulfsark 10. stormtemplar 11. ArcticVangard 11. dellwon 12. GMarshal 13. Kurumi 14. Ulfsark 15. dellwon 16. Vain 17. ??? Maybe YOU!
|
I already pmed ArcticVangard about playing, but I'll post in here too.
|
Perfect timing. I just finished my last paper for the spring, so I'll be ready for my turn whenever.
Edit; Oh, and if you haven't already - remember to name a dwarf after you! That way, we can possibly have some Fun events including us all in the future!
Oh, and also - PM me with a DL link when you're done with your turn!
|
I want my name on that list. I could be ??? xD
what are the skills of our first 7? Do we have a hunter?
|
I do want to note that the package that tnkted isn't the final package - it doesn't have the readme with a couple of important notes and information, with lots of questions that I'm sure will be asked. I'll have the updated package uploaded later today after I've had some sleep.
|
I'll play!
Also, name the fisherman after me >:D

From the Diary of 'TnkTed' Udostirist, First of the Order of Ponies
We found a nice spot near a brook, nestled in the mountains. The immediate area is forest, and the brook is located on a large deposit of stone which will be useful and hopefully will contain metal.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/YIAND.jpg)
I wanted to name it liquidmurdered, but unfortunately liquid wasn't an option. I named it horsemurdered instead, which sounds... well, ominous. Hopefully our enemies will take heed.
I had decided to only bring a single cat (my brother died during the catsplosion which destroyed the Pick of Gears) but as we were leaving the settlement another kitten joined us, and I couldn't bear to say no. Sigh, at least any catsplosion will occur later. I should remember to make a note to future dwarves to place all kittens in a pit or cage immediately after birth.
"You have arrived. After a Journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, your harsh trek has finally ended. Excellent! Goats! Plenty of bones in those folk. I can't wait for my first goat burger!
I've designed a system for flooding some nice sized farms, with the possibily later of enlargening them. Basically I dug some small rooms next to the river. The two levers next to the stairs nearby control the two floodgates that are linked to the river; pressing the bottem one opens the top floodgate, and the top lever controls the bottem floodgate. I considered putting the levers in a locked room, but with all the mining going on in other parts of the fortress I didn't trust my miners to value the procedure as much as they should.
I'm digging out a HUGE supply room, surrounded on all sides by 8x8 rooms, each of which fits 4 workshops without any of them getting in the way. The resulting work area will be able to quickly and easily churn out any goods and store them quickly.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ywCUz.jpg)
Migrants have arrived! One was a bowyer with some military skills; I made him a fisher/fish cleaner for now, he'll lead the military later. Another was a bone carver/weaver; I made him a farmer/brewer so he isn't completely useless while we get our craftshops up. We also got a high master stone crafter! Yippee! Time to make some crafting workshops, and start making mugs for the trade caravan. An Architect: Oh joy, this guy is completely useless. At least hes got novice appraiser, he can be our town broker.
Curses! These fools have elected one of the idiot miners to be our exhibition leader. I won't stand for it! If he is ever injured in a cave in, I will not use an ounce of anesthetic.
ooo! More migrants!
The first who came over the hill was a renowned high master engraver; I have much respect for the arts, and I recieved him warmly.
The second I recieved with less joy; it was a lowly siege operator, basically a peasant with no useful skills. I shall direct him posthaste to the barracks, where he can at least serve our fair settlement with the strength of his body.
The third was an extremely intimidating woodsman; he was a carpender, but seemed to have more skill with the axe than most. One could tell from his movements that he was a military man; I treated him with the respect reserved for dwarves who I will be undoubtedly healing.
The rest of the migrants were petty dyers, farmers, peasants, milkers and masons; clearly lower sorts.
Our fortress has swelled to nineteen sturdy dwarves, all of them useful; We have a military in training, and our supply of food and booze is robust and self-sufficent.
I've flooded the indoor farms and am starting to grow crops; I suggested to the farmers that we have smaller plots growing pigtails year round so we can get a nice clothing industry started, and then plump helmets for the rest. Should be pretty simple.
Drat! An elvan caravan is here, and nobody has bothered to set up the trade depot!
A thief managed to creep into the fortress! it got all the way to the dining hall before it ran into a startled farmer on his way to eat breakfast.
The theif got away, and the elves are STILL without someplace to store their goods. Everyone is too busy moving things from stockpile to stockpile to do anything! Oh well, at least they're just elves. I don't have to care much about them, they're going to get angry anyway when we level the surrounding forest to power our forges.
Oh! this is interesting. The brook froze! We'll be able to use the ice to build fortifications eventually. That should be useful! Horsemurdered could become an ice fortress!
Our liason from the mountainhomes arrived with a nice pile of stuff; I traded all of our useless (although well crafted - thank you high master stonecrafter!) mugs, and got a great deal of useful and exciting things in return, such as a good deal of cheese (I love cheese), four anvils, metal weapons, and a nearly complete suit of steel plate armor. I got a ton of food and drink and I also got a huge collection of cloth and leather for making more crafts and bags and things. I cleaned the fools out! Hahahaha!
Winter came and went uneventfully, and it is now spring. The fortress Horsemurdered is in a good place; it is time that I yield my role as leader and take my place as chief medical dwarf. I am proud of my progress on the fortress, although there were several things I never managed to accomplish:
1. the fortress is almost completely undefended. A single ambush would destroy us; we have a small militia of three dwarves but they spend most of their time training and would be of no use in a fight. 2. We have enough beds in the barracks to support our numbers for now, but more migrants will arrive soon and we will have nowhere to bed them. 3. The more advanced industries have not been established; we have no metalworking to speak of, and our soap/dye/cheese economy is nonexistant.
It is our defencelessness that worries me the most; I sure hope we don't suffer an ambush before the next guy gets here!
The diary ends here; the rest of the tome has been torn out.
Notes: Here is the region1 file: http://www.mediafire.com/?eu9u913ql1nh2ya
Throw that into the base package above, and start playing! You may have to delete the old region1 file first. AV said he was gonna upload a new base file, I'll update the OP when he does so. AV, make sure you delete the region1 file from the base pack when you upload it. GL everybody!

Second Year of Horsemurdered - Diary of "Rawrcakes" Handleorbs.
1st of Granite, year 252 From this spring untill the next, I have been assigned to guide Horsemurdered's development. I will not dissapoint our king, Lorbam Pleattomes, or our people. To help expedite my task, I've given myself the role as settlement manager and bookkeeper. Once I've worked my way through the chaotic mess and untended paperwork my predeccessor has left me, I can finally start planning for the future.
But first, I need to personally inspect our alcohol stockpile!
23th of Granite, year 252 Progress is going steadily. Our miners finished a basic workspace for me not many days after my last diary entry, and I have spent most of the time since trudging through old records. I can see that while we're very well stocked on food and other essential supplies, we're very lacking in infrastructure and defense. I will have to make these two my top priority.
But first, there's this party I should attend to...
19th of Slate, year 252 Joyous day! The mountainhomes sent 21 able dwarves to join our settlement, something which has helped my plans for our defense immensely. I've drafted 8 dwarves into our military, and hopefully organizing them in pairs will optimize their training schedule. I've dismissed my predeccessors plan of having our guards patrol, as I see it more important to temper their combat abilities. I expect to have complaints from our citizens about lacking defenses without there being patrolling guards, but they will just have to feel insecure - my plan will allow us the best defense, eventually.
I've ordered our miners to carve away some of the rock and sharpen some of the cliffs around our entrance. This should give our military a better strategic position if we have to defend against agressors in the future.
12th of Felsite, year 252. Considering the future and our rapid population growth, I've started working on enlarging our population capacity. To accomodate more citiziens, I have had my miners add two more dormitories, as well as enlarging the central dining hall. I've also had them install four wooden furnaces, as winters in this region tend to be quite cold, even underground.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/d708y.jpg)
I also added a few statues in the corridor to my office. Megalomania, say some, but I quite like them.
24th of Felsite, year 252. Something odd is going on here. After having been increasingly distant the last few days, Kosoth Theatretomes last night forcibly occupied one of our craftdwarf workshops. Ever since, he's been restlessly roaming the corridors, gathering seemingly random materials and objects, all while muttering to himself in some strange language. I have assigned a team of our soldiers to keep an eye on him, in case this odd behaviour manifests violently.
26th of Felsite, year 252. When checking in on Kosoth Theatretomes this morning, I found him soundly asleep at the workshop. Once he woke up properly, he seemed to be back to normal, but seems to be completely oblivious of what's happened the last few days. What's more strange though, is the item I found in the workshop after he left - some sort of trumpet-like instrument, crafted out of solid slate. It's decorated by rings and spikes, and has the image of a feather tree carved in its frame. When I confronted Kosoth about the item, he said it was named Bigmagic the Rough Bridle of Splashes, but seemed to be unknowing about anything else regarding it.
The origin of the instrument is unnerving, but it's craftdwarfship is unquestioningly exquisite. It would be a shame to dispose of such an item.
The month has otherwise been uneventful. Oh, an elven caravan arrived, but the despicable vermin brought very little of interest.
13th of Malachite, year 252. Our soldiers are training well, and our first line of defense is nearing completion. The first floor is ready, and I have assigned two teams to keep constant watch over it.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/L5KyB.jpg)
15th of Malachite, year 252. The errection of our first line of defense couldn't have been more well timed, it seems. Today, three kobolds have tried sneaking into our storages, but thanks to the two teams I've assigned at the entrance, their attempts were all nullified. Unfortunately, they all escaped, but it's still good to see my defensive plan worked out this well.
The second floor of the entrance defenses has been completed. The fortifications here should let our crossbowmen pick off enemies in the future, if needed. Hmm, that reminds me... we really should get some crossbows. I'll have to talk to the liaison once he returns this autumn.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/OeYsg.jpg) 3rd of Sandstone, year 252. These last couple months have been quite uneventful. Two more waves of immigrants have arrived, which has helped bolster our defenses. More importantly though, the latest wave brought a high master brewer! Already, I can feel my own moral and that of the fort increasing, as nothing is as great as well-brewed alcohol!
I should arrange a party at our new outdoor statue-garden, to celebrate his arrival.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/39Uxp.jpg)
10th of Sandstone, year 252 Again! Again, something strange is happening in the fort! Usuth Bargilt followed the same, disconnected behavioural patterns that Kosoth Theatretomes showed a few months back, and once a few days passed, he, too, returned to normal, no recollection of what had happened. He presented to me a dog bone table, which, while quite macabre, is also breathtakingly well carved. I'm not entirely sure what to do with this table, but, like the trumpet, the craftmanship is exquisite. I only wish I knew what manner of force kept possessing our citizens, and what their intentions are...
15th of Sandstone, year 252. The caravan from the mountainhomes arrived today, finally. Our broker was able to barter some quite fine goods, including two full sets of armour, some weapons and various other items. This will undoubtably help us strenghten our defenses for the future, as well as increase our standing with our king. Such stellar progress as has been performed here in Horsemurdered is without equal, surely.
Their boon will arive to us, I'm sure. Any day now.
23th of Timber, year 252. I had a terrible nightmare last night. In my dream, we had dug deep down into the earth, through winding caves and past seas of magma, the wealth of our fort growing with each day. At one point though, we hit something terrible - faceless horrors and ghostly wails swept through our tunnels and rooms, snuffing out life wherever they went! Soon, our formerly glorious fort was nothing but a cold tomb, covered with our dusty skeletons.
This must be an omen, a warning of some kind. I've ordered our miners and engineers to make an easilly defendable chokepoint in our lower tunnels, to ensure that IF my dream comes true, then we are properly prepared for it.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/hrg4c.jpg)
12th of Opal, year 252. This is a great day! Tun Abanom has been pregnant for some time, and early this morning, she gave birth! This is the first citizen who has been born in Horsemurdered, and to commemorate this event, I've ordained that he should from now on be known by the title of "Firstborn".
May he live long and strenghten us all!
27th of Obsidian, 252. Villains! Monsters!
Mere days before I was about to enjoy an end to my responsibilities as leader, goblins attacked! Two groups of them attacked savagely, and before anyone had time to react, they had already killed one of our farmers. Thankfully I had prepared enough for this situation and our soldiers were trained and eager to show their skill, but even so, three of our twelve payed for our safety with their lives, with five more in the infirmary.
I've assigned our masons the grim task of making slabs. My successor will have to decide wether we should honor our noble dead with masterfully carved memorial slabs, or if we're to carve a mausoleum for them.
Whoever follows me - I advice you to put the dead to rest as soon as possible. Strange things are happening in Horsemurdered, and I would not want us to get on bad terms with the dead!
Here's the savegame file. http://www.mediafire.com/?g2rawoa1z8tgmya

Oh my god I can't understand anything in the pictures because I've only ever looked at the default ascii. ITS ALL SO STRANGE
Good to see that the fort's starting strong. Which brings me to the next point - the fort is too stable. Horrors must be awaiting it in primal, karmic force.
|
The tutorials in the other thread are broken links now, I just downloaded and after a quick 5 minute encounter I ended up closing the game. Any good tutorials for beginners?

Just wait, knowing my luck, there'll be this HUGE invasion I'm totally not prepared for when it's my turn. Which it is now. Just a note, I'll be late 'cause I've got 3 tests at school today ;_;

This is awesome. I will definately get in on the next one (as I'm sure there will be!) due to my exams being in a week! I might just take this one up if no one does after my exams are finished.

The site has changed, http://df.magmawiki.com/ is the new one. It is really well made, just look on the homepage for the various tutorials. My advice is to load up DF40D first though, as the new military mechanics and doctor stuff is really complicated, and so getting used to the rest of the stuff first will help.
|
I don't have any problem with you joining in the middle of it, shawty.

I want in!!! all sounds good so far^^

It's so hilarious how it takes 2.5 hours just to explain the basics of DF.
I'm loving this so far, thanks for doing it. Keep it up please, I'll be reading!

This is what I did - really, you only need to learn the extreme basics of how to do stuff, and can experiment it out from there with the help of the wiki/multiple fortresses. His videos are pretty decent, in any case.

I updated the OP with more players and with rawr's post.

ooooh yeah. If horrors aren't awaiting, somebody will do something stupid like trying to build a giant magma cannon or something, only to have it fail horrible and melt everyone.

Could I be moved down the cue a little? it seems like the next week or so is going to be hellish for me, and I'd hate to not give this game the attention it deserves. -__-

Done. Can you let kurumi know? Otherwise I can just throw you at the bottom of the list if you think you'll be busy when your turn comes.

Handleorbs is possibly the best dwarf name I've ever seen or heard. AHAHAHAHAHA.
Oh man. I've only played two fortresses on DF thus far, the game is fun!! I might join in once I'm more familiar with all of the further-in stuff, or if there's more succession games in the future. Loving the writeups so far, and holy crap texture packs make this game look so different. Haha. Which is this one you guys are using?

I've accidentally built a magma cannon-thing that jammed and glassed the surface of the entire map, because a falling rock blocked a floodgate that I was trying to use to channel magma with at a bad time.
Took out the carp, though, so the engravers shall forever remember it as a victory.

Sign me up for the succession game!
|
Suggestion: Nickname each and every dwarf after a forum-goer (with appropraite dwarfy last name). Rekrul Busybottoms, Chill Azurelode, Tyler Wasieleski etc...
|
How about after people who post in the DF thread instead :D
|
I refuse to play this game again. Watching goblins invade my fortress and slaying my poor dwarves has left an emotional scar on me.
=_=
|
I got a question about those 3d screenshots. Do you actually play the game in 3d ? I downloaded the newby package and I got better skins but the game is still 2d. Is it just some screenshot device or am I missing some addon I should use ?
|
The 3d screenshots are actually from a visualizer, not from the actual game. The visualizer is called stonesense. You can't play the game in stonesense, but you can look at your fortress, and its great for taking screenshots like we have been doing.
You can learn more about stonesense at http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=43260.0
All of the screenies there have actual dwarves running around, although I've never been able to view any myself. I have no idea how they managed to do that.
|
Oh god. I wish this was a year old so i can read it all in one sitting >.< I love reading things like this. Great job so far! =D
Not going to lie, reading this makes me want to start playing again. Knowing that I will probally have to lock up the crazies again =D
|
|
Awesome, nice job guys. I'm looking forward to a lot of !!FUN!! in this...
|
I'm going to have to skip my turn, I'm sorry, but I just got SLAMMED with a metric crapton of school work. I've got so much homework to do, I just don't have time.
|
OK AV, i updated the OP. I bumped you down to the end of the list to give you time to finish. I might end up doing the same for GM who asked to be bumped as well. Kurumi is up next.
I added a few other people to the player list who expressed interest. Remember everyone: you get from spring -> spring or two days, whichever comes first.
|
Great. Well,let's reclaim the fort!
|
Which version and utilities are you using for this one?
Wouldn´t it be better to use a first-come first-served system, where you call dibs after the update and immediately continue with the fortress.
|
Oh man, looking like five minutes intro fortress I am lost already, could anyone explain something else besides obvious things? There's a huge all-stuff stockpile, many rooms and design of fort is weird itself so I think I will drop unless I will get a fortress so big myself @_@

The design is rather simple, really. The entrance holds a two-story bunker. First floor is for two melee squads, second is for archers once we get that, and third floor is simply an open statue garden. First floor down holds the other melee barracks, with the second floor down having the civilian common area. The great room in the center is the dining hall, the two offshoots are civilian dormitories. The room just by the entrance is the hospital. The two northern rooms are the indoor farms, with floodgates.
The floor below is the all-purpose crafting area. Each room here is 8x8 (aside from the ones i screwed up <.<) which makes them able to fit 4 workshops, and the center is a superpile for everything, plus a few more limited piles.
Below that, there's a couple levels of stairs, then the lower tunnel chokepoint to help make future expeditions downwards safe.

Wouldn´t it be better to use a first-come first-served system, where you call dibs after the update and immediately continue with the fortress.
Ha! Thats a good idea, we'll probably do that next time. For now we're gonna stick to the schedule. When we finish the current list I'll probably open it up to whoever wants to go next.
|
Kurumi, if you are confused, just run with it anyway, just do less big changes. As long as you keep up with the usual food-production and deal with ambushes and traders, you can leave the rest. Most things look stable. Some years you don´t need to do stuff, but just let the dwarves hang around and finish up.
|
One of my first fortresses were a succession fortress. It´s easier to learn when the essentials are there, so you don´t have to worry about the dorfs starving immediately.
|
Kurumi already gave the next guy his turn (we're in IRC together). But yeah, kurumi, for the record having a solid base set up like this is great. Thats why I spent my entire turn getting a solid infastracture down for food/booze/crafts, which is the hardest part of the game, and rawr set up a nice revolving military. The next few fortress leaders just need to add to the fortress somehow, all the hard work has been done more or less.
Also, for those of you who have seen the fortress: What do you think of the 8x8 crafting rooms? I've played many fortresses where I actually set up a large amount of 8x8 rooms with a stairway down in the middle of them (the middle 4 of the square) and underneath the entire crafting level I have a huge storepile. It makes the travel distance dwarves have to travel from the craftrooms to the storerooms really really short.
Sometimes if I really feel like being effiecent, I'll have (in vertical order, going down): Dining hall food stockpile food crafting area craft stockpile craft crafting area etc..
I didn't do that this time for time reasons, but its a cool technique, I'm wondering what other people's ideas are.
|
The 8x8 crafting rooms are good. I've usually done a 5x5 crafting room with a local stockpile per workshop, but that's really spacetaking, and really fast makes pathing a nightmare. The 8x8 solution is probably more efficient, even though it looks a lot more untidy.
|
I'd love to participate, but I know NOTHING.
I could perhaps take a day to simply dig very, very, very deep... although it's probably a bad idea isn't it?
Eh. I'll just grab some popcorn and watch the thread.
|
Personally, I like having bedrooms together and a short distance away, to reduce noise from workshops. It´s hard to get a layout where bedrooms are 8 away from workshops only by z-levels, so I usually place them far away on the x-y axises too.
About stockpiles, having them below the crafting area is great, that way haulers do the heavy work of carrying the raw material to the out-of-the-way stockpile, and the artisans only have to go down a some stairs to get what he needs to craft.
|
With 8x8 workshop rooms, there´s space to wall in a moody dwarf if you are out of shells, right? That´s usefull.
|
Hmm I wonder what it'll be like by the time it's my turn. Sounds exciting!

The problem with this sytem is, that after a few weeks or months, the person who signed might not want to, or have time anymore, he might even have stopped using teamliquid completely.
|
I suggest a 12h grace period for the next in line to claim the save, after that the one after gets it instead.
|
I have the save right now, I'm trying to get stone sense to work at the moment, do you guys mind if I do my first update without it if I can't get it to work.
|
While stonesense is awesome, a few normal screenshots with a decent tileset is good enough for me, it´s the usual way to post pics.

I just finished up until halfway through the summer will finish the rest and post the results tomorrow. The fort is pretty self sufficient with its food supply so I more or less just added stuff in that will be fun in the future.

Sign me up please and thank you.

i would also like to sign up

GMarshal said his week would be very busy, so it´s probably N3rV[Green] the next turn
|
Ok, I'm going to redo the setup a little bit. N3rV[green] is up next.
Heres how this is gonna work:
Open paint and press ctrl P to paste the image. 3. Please at least attempt to use proper grammer/spelling when you post. All this means is throw your post into word and run spellcheck. Some people aren't natural english speakers etc and thats cool but people are going to read your posts and I'd like them to enjoy doing so.
Everyone cool with this? I'll put it in the OP so everyone can read it. Also adding the new people to the list who said they wanted in. These rules will start applying after n3rv's turn.
Next fortress we'll do will operate differently, but this is the best I can do without changing the rules midgame.

Here is the save file for the fortress HorseMurdered.
Excerpts from the Journal of 'Iankill' Ceilingappeared, Lord of the Under Keep.
1st of Granite I arrived here at Horsemurdered where I will oversee the operations here for around a year. I first noticed it is quite a nice place filled with food, booze, and plenty of other things a dwarf enjoys. Although if found its natural defenses lacking, while it has a substantial army there are very few traps making it easy for invaders to breach. My first order of business is to add cage, and stonefall traps along with make the entrance to our fortress harder to enter by making the path lined with traps and a pit underneath so even if our enemies can avoid the traps they will most assuredly fall into the pit below.
6th of Granite I've not even been here for a week and there has been a birth under my rule already it is a joyous occasion. + Show Spoiler +
18th of Granite One of our brave warriors has reached the rank of Axe Lord.
20th of Granite More Migrants from the mountain homes have come to our prosperous fortress, the total now stands at 74 dwarfs.
1st of Felsite Our miners have discovered a cave underground. I've order a underground keep to be built to help us to secure the valuable spider silk, flux stone, and trees that are down here. + Show Spoiler +
14th of Felsite Filthy Elven Scum arrives for trading, I trade some stone mugs for a ton of wood and some booze.
16th of Felsite A small group of goblins arrive to ambush our fortress they are brutally slaughtered by our fortress soldiers. + Show Spoiler +
15th of Hematite One of our Children is struck with a fey mood and he takes over a crafts dwarfs workshop, He has quickly gathered all his materials and started his works. + Show Spoiler +
16th of Hematite Dammit all, a Cyclops has been seen outside out fortress I must scramble the military. + Show Spoiler + One of our dwarfs Kosoth Theatertomes, attacks him with great fury striking him down quickly without taking any damage, I've given him the title of 'Giant Slayer' + Show Spoiler +
22nd of Hematite The child has finished his project it was a valuable willow harp, although it has no use to any dwarf. + Show Spoiler +
28th of Malachite More Migrants have arrived bringing our population up to 84 dwarfs.
15th of Galena Two goblin ambushes arrive they manage to kill one woodworker that was caught outside before being slaughtered by the army.
16th of Galena A Third ambush arrives just after the army has finished up with the last two these goblins were butchered like lambs.
5th of Limestone My mining project has failed I've turned its results into catacombs for our dead dwarfs.
13th of Limestone My underground keep has captured some troglodytes I shall use them for experiments and practice for our military.
5th of Sandstone a goblin thief has fallen into the pit below the bridge to out fortress both his legs are broken and he is unconscious, one of our residents has taken to practicing his crossbow skills on him.
17th of Sandstone There has been another birth in the fortress
19th of Sandstone More Migrants have arrived I've drafted several into our armies, our total population has reached 90 dwarfs.
26th of Sandstone We have captured a troll at the Under Keep, I hope someday we can feed our most hated enemy the elves to him.
8th of Timber Another dwarf has fallen into a fey mood and has taken over a crafts dwarf workshop.
18th of Timber A Caravan from the mountain homes has arrived for trade I've Traded some of our crafts for foodstuffs and booze.
1st of Moonstone It is the beginning of winter and I've decided to release command to the next ruler and go underground to my quarters in the Under Keep. At the end of my rule we have a booze supply of 1500 units and a food supply of a similar amount, along with 90 dwarfs. + Show Spoiler +
|
Ok, so I've started playing and this is by far the best fort I've ever seen O.o. We got some real pros around these parts.
As my first order of business I had some dwarves get ready to kill a troll we had caught in one of our cage traps when all of a sudden the trade liaison tells me that we he can establish us as an official land of their realm. Never seen this before wtf do I do?
Nominate a dwarf for some crazy position? say no?
I've got no clue. On the other hand, the troll is proving to be more of a pansy than a fighter, it just keeps running around. Gotta make sure I do that in closed rooms from now on. Yay for live military training.

This is a really great read. One of these days I'll download the lazy newb pack and figure out how this game works.

Say yes, we become a barony and we get a bunch of cool noble stuff!
Remember, you're playing roughly a year and a fourth, since the previous player quit early, so you get an extra long turn.
I say once we establish ourselves as a barony we start seizing all the trade goods that come in. Viva la revolution!

I say once we establish ourselves as a barony we start seizing all the trade goods that come in. Viva la revolution! I agree we have enough supplies to last at least a year and the farms and stills that are underground will provide enough to last out any lengthy sieges if we get sealed in our fortress. The only worry is the lack of coal and iron, but I think we can find that deeper underground.
|
so it's decided, I ctrl alt deleted my first little look around since I nearly got a dwarf killed by accident, and accidently hit a key that said no on that window, so I'm starting from the original save tomorrow and my mission is to start up the metal industry.
Also, since it's my turn I'm gonna name the dude I appoint me. Seems like a cool thing to do.
That or I'ma pick an unnamed kickass military dwarf.
|
Be sure to assign the dwarf who loves adamantite and mermaid bones to be our baron. Nothing creates more dramaFUN than unfulfilled mandates.
|
|
That would be awesome. Assuming we have enough players on NA
Also, once we go through all the players that want to play I think we should go through the list a 2nd time, but if any new players want to sign up the get put in next or something like that.
For example
player A (played once) Player B (played once) New Player Player C (played once)
Just an idea I had so that horsemurdered will live on for eternity!

If we had enough people we could potentially do both.

When is the next update coming?

We are waiting for n3rv. Unfortunately the new rules don't start applying until after he has his turn, soo...

thanks for the updates guys this is a blast to read

He told me via PM he would be posting by tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm sure he'll post, but if he doesn't, yes you will go next fontong. The new rules will apply to you, you should read up on them. They're in the OP.

I really need my DF fix. I cant play the game bc it is confusing as fuck but interesting to read it.
Wish game could be played using stonesense visuals.

If n3rv doesn't post his update in the next couple hours, the next person on the list can go (by which I mean fontong)

This is getting pretty awesome.
Never quite got the hang of this game, even when I had oodles of free time.
It is just too much free time needed. But still, someone should stream their Dwarfing!
|
Ok, since n3rv appears to be MIA I'll start my turn. If he posts anytime this evening I'll be happy to start again from his save though, otherwise I'll just continue as normal.
Edit: Whew ok, I hadn't started yet anyway.

Not related to the Succession Game, so I won't spam a page with it.
But, here's something you guys might be interested in.
+ Show Spoiler +A friend of mine writes (and another friend of mine draws) a Dwarf Fortress Webcomic based off a succession game they did together (only with 2 players). http://www.bravemule.com/matulremrit/It's essentially a series of diary entries from Dwarfs from a band of bandits called Matul Remrit whom are creating their new home called Bravemule. As such, they have a lot of off-translations to give the Dwarfs some true character. It's been really successful on SomethingAwfuls "lets play" forum, so much so that they even made a huge panorama/video for it and contracted some musician to write a piece for it. + Show Spoiler [My favorite Drawing] +The first death of Matul Remrit. ![[image loading]](http://www.bravemule.com/storage/matul-remrit/obsidian-1051/u12art.jpg)

Oh shit, I'm nearly done. It's nearing winter.
Sorry, so many things going on at once O.o
All I can say for now though, is that we have endured a tragic event, and one of our very special dwarfs is no more.
Also, LAVA HAS BEEN FOUND.
I'll post my total update some point later tonight.
|
@Iankill What graphic set is that? I really like it.
|
Ok, so n3rv sent me his file and I'm a bit confused. Based on what is linked in the OP, we are supposed to be using either default tileset or at least one that doesn't change the region's 'raw' folder, right?
Edit: ok, two things. The file n3vr sent only works in DF 31_25 and has been changed to the pheobus tileset. ehh what should i do.
I pasted it into the base package in the OP and the file didn't work. I also took a look and raws in the region file were changed to Pheobus. When I pasted it into my 31_25 folder it did work.

I was given one of the greatest fortresses I've ever laid eyes on, and I hoped to do it proud. After nearly a year of ruling, I feel like I've made it an even better place to live.
The very first event of any note came right as I took my seat as ruler, I was presented with an earring made of Galena with intricate carvings and other ornate bits all over, a true artifact. Alas it isn't the most USEFUL of devices, but I'm sure it brings joy to the little crafter that made it.
As I was taking my tour of the land, I noticed that a large trade had just transpired, an the liaison wanted a word. He had news the likes of which I've never even heard before. He wished to bring us into their kingdom, with our very own Baron! Very very exciting I'm sure, but in the heat of the moment I had no idea who to pick, who could possibly bring justice to such an honor.....and then it hit me, TnkTed, the First of the Ponies. Surely he could be the grand ruler of us all, seeing as he was one of the first to bring the fort to life.
So it was done, TnkTed became the baron, and there was much rejoicing. Although, there wasn't as much as their could have been. TnkTed and our mayor were not the happiest in the bunch due to no real rooms or dining area. Well, I fixed that and gave the mayor his own office/room and the Baron as well, both with a tomb (just in case).
Everything was going wonderfully, more drink around then could possibly be finished, endless amounts of lavishly cooked food, and good company all around....and then it was heard.
A shrill screech from the underfort depths. A Forgotten Beast, we must have woken it with our celebrations....no matter, this is what our military is for!
So I round up all 5 squads and we charge the Beast, it was a massive shrew like thing, except it seemed almost demonic. After fierce battle with many many ferocious dwarfs, the great Axe Lord N3rV took his iron axe, and swung it two finals time. The head of the Beast went sailing off, and the men went for a round of drinks as is their custom after such a battle.
As this drama was going on, the Miner's were all off on a mission. Iron ore was the only thing missing from the perfect fortress I was handed, and I wanted to be the leader that found it. So exploratory digging was a near constant for my band of trusty miners. Layer after layer was nothing but copper, tin, and other useless "pretty" metals. Leaving the underfort far above, the miners dug, and dug, and excavated out huge caverns, only to find no iron.
Then we made progress of a different kind. A new cavern, bigger and more open than the one above, and crawling with even nastier critters. Well, at least it's something to be thankful for.
With a new cavern, a new underfort was in need of digging out and since there's still been no sign of iron ore, the miners could use a good REAL job, instead of digging forever, hoping to find something that just might not even exist.
Another dwarf has been muttering to himself about body parts and bones, it's almost worrying to hear him muttering as he wonders the halls searching for something, and looking very strangely at the headless corpse of the Forgotten Beast. A few weeks later, he came to me with something I have never imagined. A pick made of the bones of a Forgotten Beast, decorated and carved with eerie pictures of past artifacts. It's a true artifact, of real worth too, well over 55k. If only I knew how to get one of the miners to use it...T.T
Everything was going wonderfully, the first Mandate from the baron was completed quickly, seeing as he just wanted something bronze to look at, the stocks were still booming, except one little problem.
Wood.
We ran out. 100%. and the Wood cutters were nowhere to be found. Very annoying indeed. But just when it was going to cause some big problems due to running out of coal, a caravan arrives!
Just in time. Too bad it's those stupid elves.....and I just tried to trade them some wood....Shit.
Ok, let's try something....FORCE. Seized a whole caravan of Elven goods, and all they had to say about it was "well, there's nothing we can do" as my Axe lord and Hammer Lords looked on from the fortress, just in case they wanted to try something.
WOOD ACQUIRED! as well as a bunch of other useless stuff. And we didn't even need to sell the THOUSANDS OF ROCK MUGS. Seriously, which ruler decieded it was a good idea to leave "make rock mug R" in the craftshop for like...over a year?
Seriously, we have a lot of mugs.
AMBUSH!!! AMBUSH!!! GET TO THE GATES! Goblin ambush, only about 5 though, shouldn't be too hard to deal with, just send everybody up to kill em all....
Hmm...Why are you alone out there Kib? Wait Kib....what are you doing, you're alone!
Umm...I think Kib was kinda stupid guys, he just ran into 5 goblins, archers and spearmen, by himself, with no weapon.
ANOTHER AMBUSH!!! WTF!!?!?!?
Ok...nvm 10 goblins are at the gates.
(ok for reals guys, I thought I lost the game right here. Shit was going bad, dwarfs were running in single file, and I thought it was gonna get ugly....then the LORDS got to the fight. xD. They kill stuff way better than I thought they would.)
A giant battle of blood and guts unfolds at the gates to our keep, and yet we only lose that stupid idiot that charged in alone with no weapon. I'd say thats victory all around.
Doo dooo dooooo, dwarfs are workin!!!!! And a lowly mechanic has gone into a very weird mood....wonder what he's thinking about.....
Well, the mechanic is back, with probably the worst artifact I've ever seen, although it is amazing to behold....what's the point of making artifact quality mechanisms? Seriously dude, if you're gonna make something amazing...at least make a traction bench or something.....>.<
Not much happening, things just settling down, a few critters get killed in the caverns by whichever squad happens to be around, Still not even close to running out of booze and food.
The second mandate has come in! 2 anvils are to be made.
K this needs to be told out of character. Cause shit went down right here.
So, I tell the stupid dwarfs to make some anvils, do some other random designations, and then go out for a smoke to let the dudes work stuff out.
I come back down, and TnkTed has been struck with melancholy, and stepped down from his baronship, since for some absurd reason, the dwarfs decided dumping stone out of the mines was more important that making the shit for a mandate.
TnkTed died of thirst a few months later. It was a sad time.
I decided to rename our replacement chief medical dwarf TnkTed, The Second Coming, in honor of our fallen first leader.
Sorry that I killed you bro, but blame the stupid blacksmiths, not me xD.
Oh also, we lost a baby. Somebody before me installed some crazy spinning spear training device in a little room, and a dwarf with a baby walked into that room as the lever to make the spears go got pulled. This lead to an impaled baby, and a very sad dwarf. The things that happen in this game O.o
Bleh, I lost it, no more in character writing, sorry guys.
But in summery I mostly just did a great deal of mining down for iron to no avail, and doing a great of of other digging. got nobles rooms for two people, and a nice little office/bedroom in the back of the underunderfort for the dude I named after myself. I did find a magma see WAYYYYYYY down at around lvl 7 or so (The main fort is somewhere up in the 100s), Started making a larger outer perimeter so the depot is also protected in the future, and created the UnderUnderFort with some bedrooms for special military dwarfs, and I designated a HUGE dormitory floor so that eventually nearly every dwarf will have his own room.
Artifacts made under my rule. An earring, a forgotten beast bone pick and some mechanisms (woot!!! >.<)
and a glassmaker that's in a mood, who's seriously just sitting at a table, probably crying, since his only enabled profession at the time of the mood was a hauler of random junk (he seriously had not a single thing active, maybe that's why he's not doing anything at all? even though I pretty much turned on every crafting profession?)
May the next leader bring even more glory to the fort!
Maybe you can figure out some way to get lava to a decent level for a magma forge area. xD
Will post a bunch of screen shots tomorrow, don't wanna do a whole bunch of uploading tonight...
|
Hah someone decided to install danger rooms? What an abuser!
Looks like you survived many battles...very nice. It looks like I'll have to continue the game in 31.25 then. I don't think that there's any going back after n3vr changed over to 31.25, if that's ok with tnkted.
Don't worry, the tileset thing is really easy to fix. Plus I already use Pheobus myself, it's a pretty awesome tileset. And yeah wow, I was looking around the entire map for sedimentary or extrusive rock to get iron from...and there's none. Obsidian swords then, perhaps, or just adamantine.
Embark is so small that I can't scroll in the xy plane, hehe
|
Honestly if you just use the lazy noob pack, it will do all the work for you in changing save files around into different tilesets and such.
I'm sorry about messin up btw, was just on auto pilot when I started up, and threw the folder into my regular ole DF folder without a second thought.
Hope it all works out.
BTW the embark is so TINY. My goodness xD
One of my dorm blocks nearly covers the whole map O.o
Also I forgot this little gem.
At the start there was a MASSIVE stack of caged animals on a single tile, and one day one of them died from hunger. I didn't think that was good, and blamed it on them not having pastures to graze. So I set up a huge plot of land outside for them, and threw them all outside....and they continued to drop off one by one.
eventually my field of dozens of animals was nothing but Hs and Ds in the refuse pile.
Pastures are a 31.25 thing im pretty sure, so could be why it got all messed up..so sorry I killed all our livestock!!!, oh well, the caves provide more than enough food.
|
Oh man this report is going to be so good. I wonder if you will die leading our troops into battle, N3rV?
|
Nah, that guy is unbreakable. Go read his bio.
He doesn't even have any friends. He only knows his Gods and his Axe, and those who wise to separate them.
Make sure you give yourself an appropriate dwarf/room and such too.
|
Thumbs up on the danger room, the training part that is, not loosing a dwarf to it.
Any screenshots?
|
Well, the mechanic is back, with probably the worst artifact I've ever seen, although it is amazing to behold....what's the point of making artifact quality mechanisms? Seriously dude, if you're gonna make something amazing...at least make a traction bench or something.....>.< Artifact mechanisms makes insane weapon traps. It's probably one of the best artifacts to get, not counting armor or weapons.
Otherwise, seems like you had a lot of Fun!

Updated the list. And sigh, you really should have put it in the package n3rv, thats why we set it up!
Oh well, I don't think its that big of a deal at this point. We'll just continue at .25. Does anyone want to set up the new package? I know that plated.rawr had changed a few raw files that we might have to change back.
|
Changing it back to the package raws shouldn't be a problem, as the majority of the changes I made was to ensure a proper world generation. Since we're still using the same region save, the fact that we're now in 31.25 shouldn't have much impact on any of that.
Just copy the creature_standard.txt from the old package to the new, both in the Region1-folder's raw/objects and the default DF raw/objects, and the other changes I've made should carry on over as well.
Although thinking on it, the d_init.txt changes might be essential as well. Here, copy the d_init.txt from the original package to data/init, and replace the new (31.25) one.
I think that should undo any problems.

I think you should give the fortress to some pretty newb guy to handle so disaster happen all over. This fortress is too much successful.

Although I don't really have excess food, or legendary dwarfs, I'm getting by, which is a first, really.

Here we go. I did 11 months since I was low on time. We have a huge smelting operation going down at the magma level. I wouldn't break through the rest of the adamantine before more preparations are made. We almost have a legendary weaponsmith too.
I'll post my report later.

anything note worthy, Fontong?
I'm thinking about adding myself to the list, but I can't handle a big fortress yet.

Journal of 'Fontong' Kolkathil Ingul Kilrud, Second of the Ponies and Lord of Horsemurder in the year 254
5th Timber, 254, in the Late Autumn
Today my rule of the fortress Horsemurdered begins. The journey from the Mountainhomes was not easy, but I can only be thankful that my arrival preceded Winter's grasp on the land.
My initial surveys of this land's holdings are pleasing, as it appears that the fortress is well equipped to weather an extended siege. However, the dwarves here have found no iron under the earth, which does troubles me. It seems as though they have hitherto now relied on trade and salvage to obtain iron, let alone steel. If nothing can be done about this problem, I see no choice but to seek alternatives. They say if one looks deep enough, a glorious substance called adamantine can be found. I must look into this.
8th Timber
Sadly, nothing could be done to save the Glassmaker from melancholy. I ordered a glass furnace build immediately upon my arrival, but his sanity was already at its limits.
11th Timber
The training room brings great grief to our fortress. A child wandered in today and was slain.
2nd Moonstone, Early Winter
The extraction of adamantine has begun. It appears as though some adamantine will be unobtainable due to its proximity to magma. Our warriors will soon be wielding weapons of the sharpest, lightest substance known to dwarvenkind.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/adamantine.png)
14th Moonstone
I've ordered that a large cavern be dug, and that magma be channeled into long troughs for use in smelting operations. Strand extraction will soon begin, and I look forward to holding in my hand an adamantine sword. Bedchambers and food stores will be arranged in the deep so that our workers will not be forced to return to the higher caverns for food or rest.
1st Opal
The first wafers of adamantine have emerged from the craftsdwarves shops. This is indeed a wondrous day!
11th Opal
This morning my rest was interrupted by a resounding bellow throughout the cavern. I quickly donned by armor and headed to the underkeep, where the lord 'N3rV' Stulasmel had already gathered his squad. The veterans, speaking in hushed tones, quieted at my arrival and N3rV approached me. He had slain one of these beasts in the past, and was willing to lead our brave fighters against it. Despite his determination, my decision is that for now discretion is the better part of valor. We will be sealing the gates of the underkeep until our adamantine weapons can be brought against the monster.
18th Opal
Grave news. Our sentinels on the surface report that a massive beast has been spotted on the perimeter of our lands, a titan they say.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/hilltitan.png)
19th Opal
It is indeed a hill titan, composed of salt. I ordered that the drawbridge be raised, but alas, our butcher was trapped outside. He is fleeing the monster, but I have no idea how long his stamina will last.
I see no other choice then. I will marshal our forces to defeat this invader.
20st Opal
The bridge was lowered, and I gave the order to charge. Though I was at the scene myself, I could hardly believe it. Lord N3rV truly proved himself worth of his title, "Hellbeast Slayer". He lead the charge, even crashing headfirst into the titan. He recovered, and dodged several blows, before taking the head of the titan in a single fell blow.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/slayer.png) lol imba
6th Obsidian
The work down around the magma sea continues. I've order an office and bedchambers for myself constructed so that I may personally oversee proceedings.
18th Obsidian
A fire imp was spotted in the booze stockpiles! I pray that we manage to slay it before anything untoward happens.
I personally drove my sword though the guts of the filthy beast, but not before it burnt one of our beloved dogs to ash. I will have to install better security measures in the furnace rooms.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/fireimp.png)
26th Obsidian
Progress on my quarters is nearly complete. In addition, the first wafers of adamantine are emerging from the magma smelters.
Reports of strange mushroom-like creatures abound in the underkeep, I must investigate this disturbance.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/plump.png)
27th Obsidian
The intruders were certainly tasty.
25th Granite
The first Adamantine weapon has been created! A sword which I myself will use. Encouraged by this, I ordered that the underkeep be unblocked and the Forgotten Beast slain.
I sallied out myself for the fight, and my weapon easily dispatched the beast.
24th Slate
Work around the magma level continues. I have set up an entire room of smelters to obtain the metals coming out of the earth. Now that the caverns at this level are complete, I have sent the miners back to work looking for valuable ore and gems.
Another forgotten beast appeared today. We shall destroy it as we did with the last.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/smelting.png)
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/beast2.png)
21st Felsite
I've ordered that furnishings of the finest bronze be created for my chambers. It is an attractive, yet still martial metal.
8th Hematite
Preparations for full scale smelting and metal forging are basically complete. The miners have been ordered to excavate entire levels in search of ore. The next step is to prepare to invade the Underworld, though I hardly know where to begin.
14th Malachite
My loyal companion Kivish Limulazin slew a forgotten beast today. Quite impressive considering that he is missing his left hand. Truly a testament to his courage and bravery. For this, I have given him the title "Iron Hand".
3rd Galena
Our legendary mechanic has been spending his time fishing! I must fix this at once.
19th Galena
A vile force of darkness has arrived. I trust in our military might to put a quick end to these goblins.
This is surely not the most fortunate day! A savannah titan has been spotted. I've order that all troops prepare in the surface castle to fight these attackers.
The fight went well, and all the attackers were fought off. I faced an exceptionally skilled lasher, and despite delivering mortal wounds to the creature I was severely wounded. I can hardly believe the tenacity of that creature. Before I was even wounded at all I severed the goblin's right leg and stabbed it in the left leg and severed the bone. I then proceeded to spill the creature's guts, but it fought on! The goblin's silver lash scored the flesh of my leg and my arm. In response I severed its arm...but it was still not the end. I do not know what foul power compelled it to fight on. The goblin attacked so ferociously that I lost conciousness. When I awoke the battle had already ended, and the Iron Hand stood over me. I am glad to have such loyal soldiers under my command.
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/goblinkilling.png)
![[image loading]](http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu275/Fontong2/wounds.png) amazingly, my dwarf received all these injuries AFTER the it cut off the goblin's leg, arm, stabbed it in the other leg (fracturing the bone), and spilled its guts.
I was later told by the Iron Hand that the lasher I faced fought on even till all his limbs were lost.
7th Limestone
My treatment is going well, and I expect to make a full recovery.
7th Sandstone
I've managed to leave my bed, finally. The smelting operations are in full swing down in the magma level, though a small crisis was barely averted. I must note to be more careful when it comes to booze stockpiles and magma.
21st Sandstone
Save for some trophy scars I have made a full recovery. We nearly have a grandmaster weaponsmith, and once he is legendary we will be producing adamantine weapons on a larger scale.
22nd Sandstone
We have caught a cave dragon in one of our traps. This could prove useful, eventually.
11th Timber
In light of my recent injuries, I have decided to give over the fortress to my successor, whom I have been informed will be arriving shortly. Hopefully the break from administrative duties in addition to my martial responsibility will allow me some more time to recuperate.
|
Awesome report, loved it
|
Thanks for the writeup Fontong. I loved the screen cap of the Hill Titan battle. OP indeed, nerf shields!

Got the file Im gonna not use graphics programs if that is alright with everyone, much prefer the original ascii. Also 162 pop! this is gonna crush my computer lol. I'll also try not to get everyone killed whilst trying to get creative with the cave dragon and giant cave spider.
I'll get playing tomorrow, seeing as I should really be sleeping now
EDIT: curiosity got the better of me. How small is the embark!?!?
|
it's um....small xD
Very very small.
|
haha I'm so used to having huge ones to try and get more features in, but obviously df2010 has dealt with that.
also all my symbols are messed up, Im assuming cos people have been using the graphics pack. Its no biggie, just making sure that its not due to my computer or whatever
|
Its 2x2. I wanted to do at least 3x3 but apparenlty some of the other organizers have super slow computers
|
I'm completely new, haven't even finished watching the intro video yet. But this seems awesome. When im more familiar with the interface and actually understand whats happening (and after school gets out) id love to be a part of this hahaha.

NICE!
In my fortress I'm hitting 100 dwarves now, and there are A TON of idle ones.... I don't know what to do with so many!
I didn't find any iron either, which sucks donkey balls.
I don't really know what to do now...
I don't think I want a chance at this game, I would probably kill every single dwarf in the fortress in the dumbest ways possible.

I make sub categories in Dwarf Therapist to make sure I have no idlers.
I have Crafters (all crafting no hauling) Peasants(hauling menial tasks) Miners (mining duh!) Farmers(farming/gathering plants)
and I have a few others. Hopefully this helps

Wow you guys have been lucky with the forgotten beast spawns, to be able to kill them with so few casualties. In my fort I recently had a fire breathing lobster with poisonous blood that killed 5 of my best military dwarves.
If you guys have problems with idle dwarves what I usually do is dump all the stone cluttering everything into a 1x1 garbage dump and then reclaim it all for use, this makes the fort so much cleaner. Another thing I do is engrave everywhere possible, although this can be bad if you need to mine later as engravers tend to get pissed when you destroy their masterwork engraving with a pick. If idlers are still a huge problem just draft them all into the military and assign them to train 24/7. Even if you have no equipment they can train as wrestlers and get useful skills like dodging for when you can afford to equip them.

I read that somewheere as ive started DF this weeked. My first fortress is going ok i have around 90 dwarves and stuff but the stone everywhere Is something i really dislike, I started off just storing is all in stone storage areas but this is woefully inneficient. How do I do this? I couldnt work it out.
Also, why is the only metal in this damned hill gold, all i can use that for is trading for useful things and decorating, id prefer to equip my troops with someting as at the moment I have like 2 non wooden weapons.

so I have only heard of dwarf fortress before and never actually played it, but i find these reports really entertaining to read...maybe I'll see if I can start playing and getting good so that I can have a turn at this!

Even if I don't understand much of the game, I still had fun reading this thread. The rulers seem to be the dwarfs themselves telling the story me.
Edit: Btw, in the rules section... that should be Ctrl+V right? Not Ctrl P?

Yes, heh, it is!
For those of you who are thinking about playing: You might want to consider downloading the game (the base package from the OP is out of date unfortunately, N3RV you NERD!) and opening up the save to take a look around. The ascii graphics will screw with you a little bit, but just press k and use the arrow keys and the < > keys to move around and between Z levels. Pressing k lets you see whatever is on the tile your cursor is on. You can use v to look at people and buildings and see what they're doing/making and then just follow the instructions on the screen to see more info, like that dwarf's current thoughts and fears and religion and family and wishes, etc.
Thats probably one of my favorite parts, just looking at dwarves. If any of you ever played rollercoaster tycoon, where you could look at guests' favorite rides and what they've done in the park so far, its similar to that except WAY WAY more involved (this includes stuff like their favorite drink, favorite color, and a brief psychological writeup).

One thing.
I have an Artifact Silver Crossbow! How the hell do I give it to my Marksdwarf?
I have a whole BUNCH of silver in my caves. And I can't seem to offload enough rock craft with each caravan, I take everything I need and MIGHT need, and still I have a HUGE amount of crafts and gems.
Another thing, I find it REALLY annoying to have to tell my dwarfs to cut each and every specific type of gem, instead of a "cut gems" command. And I find it annoying to have to tell then the same about clothes and armor. Why can't I command: "Make a full set of cloth/armor"?
Gah!
I really need help.
And on the topic of high walls, do I build "walls" over other walls or build fortificantions, or what? Man! This game has a LOT of stuff!

Quantum Stockpile.
press i --> press enter where you want all of your "dumped" items to go --> Press enter again to make a 1x1 square --> press "g" (I THINK. Whatever "garbage dump" is). Quantum Stockpile is made.
To store stones (or anything tbh) in your new shiny Quantum Stockpile.
press d --> press b --> press d --> enter --> select over EVERYTHING you want dumped in this pile. This will catch EVERYTHING. Furniture, food, whatever. Sometimes easier to select everything and then use d --> x to un select your furniture and other important stuff.
Dwarves will begin stacking everything up in a fucking epic stack of stuff. They will NOT pull items to use out of a Quantum Stockpile however, so you must "reclaim" the stack every now and then.
One thing that is handy is making a Quantum Stockpile in the same room as a craftsdwarf / mason workshop.
To reclaim for use:
d --> b --> r (maybe...reclaim hotkey. I'm at work going off memory here!) select your 1x1 square, hit enter twice, they should un-highlight green.
Tada, 129025801 stone in a 1x1 square instead of all over the floor.

reclaim is "c".
Other than that, it is how it works.
The stones will still slow down your CPU, though, even if they are stacked in one tile.
I'm trying to use all my stone, but simply can't use it faster than 3 legendary miners can mine. Even with 3 Master Craftdwarfs (they will get there) and 4 Masons (1 Grand Master, rest lower).

If you store all your stone in the 'quantum stockpile' under an up drawbridge, you can smash it into oblivion when you lower the bridge, it'll be gone forever though....

Quantum Stockpiles and Atom Smashers.
Fucking Dwarf Fortress is more technologically advanced than current man kind. Now you can really tell your friends that Dwarf Fortress is the most complex game in the world, it's got Theoretical Physics in it!

It also has perpetual motion too http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Water_wheel#Perpetual_motion

I haven't made it that far into my DF career just yet...stuff requiring power and such is way out of my scope hahaha.

For an ascii based game dwarf fortress sure likes to keep cpus busy! Thought it'd be a game I could play on my ancient P4, but alas, it keeps crashing.
I just wanted to say: Keep up the thread, it's hilarious to read how you're all having such a ball with those silly characters ^^

Hey whoever gets the fortress next should totally upgrade my tomb a bit. Maybe tie up some goblins or that dragon or something and then just toss bad guys in to feed him.
Actually, turning my tomb into a murderpit would be a pretty good way to go... :D

Yeah you will probs never get rid of all your crafts lol. If you have a legendary craftsdwarf you are pretty much set for trade. I think artifact weapons can only be used by champions, that is, legendary in their respective skills.
Yeah micromanagment is just one of the things with DF, nothing you can do about it. And yes, build walls on top of other walls. Fortifications can be shot though.

Haha I could try. I'm trying out some other stuff first though. Also I need to make my own tomb, and I am shotgunning the dragon!

oh no, everything is going wrong : (
130 dwarves, 3 squads, fully equiped with steel weapons and stuff, everything is going nicely then 3 things happen simultaneously
1) Goblin Siege, about 6 dwarves are caught outside and ripped to shreds by a goblin riding a crocodile, it rips off one of their heads and it goes flying away, that thing is a beast, so I put my archer squad on the watcher tower and they start engaging, my archer captain is immediately hit square in the face by an arrow and his head explodes.
2) My goblin pit firing range was being built but one of my miners decided to dig from the bottom first (arguably my fault I should have known better :D), long story short a 3 story high block of rocks and metal collapses on 5 miners and destroys them all, about 20 dwarves run down to recover the bodies, remains etc and then my last miner decides now would be a great time to mine away that last supporting pillar. 6 more dead, broken bones everywhere, vomit covering the floor, on top of the rocks which are crushing them to death. of course that miner escapes with a bruised toe : ). LIVES TO CAUSE HORRIBLE DESTRUCTION ANOTHER DAY. My hospital is jam packed with people who can't walk, are vomiting all over the place, bleeding on the floor, there's even a leg on the floor of my hospital and I can't figure out how it got there, maybe one of the dogs picked it up or something because his owner lost it in the pit of despair.
3) An unholy alliance of elk birds, cave crawlers and other nasties decide now would be a good time to rise up from the underground caverns (the door didnt keep them out D and wreck havoc from below, so what they have done is commandeered my barracks while my soldiers are all out dying to goblins riding crocodiles and falling rocks. Bloody elk birds are killing anything that comes in which doesnt have a weapon.
And here's the kicker, they have cut off the route from the bedrooms to the hospital, so patients are leaving the hospital on crutches and splints and getting massacred by these bloody birds and alligators while trying to go to their beds for some sleep.
I'm down to about 70 dwarves and 5 soldiers but DAMNIT I WILL PERSEVERE.

They are inside? How did they get inside? Forgot to close a door?
From 130 to 75 dwarves isn´t that bad though, if you can keep the rest alive until the danger is past.

Three events which include mass death's occurring at once, that's really bad luck! I admire your fortitude and I wish you the best of luck! I cant wait for the next update.

The suspense is killing me. I almost feel comfortable enough with game now. Will be ready for next game for sure!

If Shawty doesn't post by the end of today, the save will be up for grabs for the first person to ask for it. Clock ends at 12:00 Korean time, so by the end of the hour.
And everyone, JSUK, I'm going to be out of town until tuesday or so. I'm going to bonnaroo and I won't be back until then. I trust the thread to keep its self together in that time, but if anyone has any questions or something needs to be resolved, please direct all inquiries to articvangard or to plated.rawr and they should be able to help you out. I will come back on tuesday (maybe monday if we drive quick!) and will add all the posts I missed to the OP. I hope to come back to read five pages of gameplay, so get crackin'!
|
I take it Shawty has missed his deadline then?
I've been following this game (thread) avidly since it got running. Fascinating stuff!

This thread single-handedly got me in to DF. Now I'm even dreaming DF style :O (I want to go over there but I don't have anything to make a pick from etc.....)
On the edge of my seat for the next instalment. C'mon Shawty!

ahhh sorry sorry sorry, just about done now, just writing it up. Got exams in two days lol

Region
Sorry about the delay, but here it is. Also for sc players why has no one other than me set up hotkeys!? I was also using the newest DF, so that is why the symbols are different, and perhaps why the bridge didnt work:S
11th Timber
I arrive at Horsemurdered and discover that it is one of the most fully functioning fortresses I have ever encountered! This is good as it means I can add my own twist to it without having to worry too much about organisation!
12th Timber
As I arrive in Horsemurdered I set about trying to exert my influence on this great fort, but as soon as I step through the doors I am alerted that a huge goblin army has appeared on the edge of the horizon!
A vile force of darkness has arrived
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/M03Ka.jpg) (seroiusly wtf, first day!!)
Scores of goblins riding on Rutherers arrive, Giant olm men and cave crawlers too. This is going to be a tough fight to survive, especially as there are NO ARCHERS IN THE ENTIRE FORT.
There is a whole squad of goblin marksmen, so I have decided to seal off the fort from the outside until I can decide how to deal with this invasion.
My attempt to raise the drawbridge failed, apparently the lever at the top of the fort is not for the bridge. Our forces are mobilising as I write this.
Two dwarves are caught by goblin archers and are slain instantly. Rawrcakes takes a blow to the head but the army manages to get to the fight in time to save him his life.
In the ensuing fight a recuit takes a metal bolt to the neck and dies instantly. The elite warriors of Horsemurdered seem to be stemming the flow of mounted goblins for now, but unfortunately only a third of them have arrived at the gates thus far.
Three trolls enter the fray, one of them being taken down instantly by the combined efforts of a hammerlord and a spearmaster.
The militia captain takes on a troll by himself, but takes a bolt to the leg. Whilst he was recoiling from the blow a troll punches his skull through his brain.
It seems as though the fight is turning to our favour, but a quick scan of the horizon reveals there are still 32 more goblins to arrive, including their leader, and 42 creatures they have brought with them The army pours out the front gates into the ranks of the goblins. One of the hammerdwarves takes and iron bolt to the lip which procedes to get stuck. He carries on fighting as though nothing had happend. What.a.baller
True badass
The dwarves manage to slay enough of the horde that the remaining mounted crowsbowgoblins turn and flee. Today is a day of great celebration. An evaluation of the wounded shows that 4 dwarves died in the invasion. Other injuries are fairly minor, except one hammerdwarf has lost a foot.
16th Timber
During the battle a craftsdwarf was possessed by some greater power, and created a cassiterite mug. When I heard this I assumed it's value would be negligable, however my appraisers rate it at around 102000!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/j8oPA.jpg)
The spoils of war are very nice, allowing us to equip some of our worse off dwarves with iron breastplates!
A trade caravan arrives, with plenty of steel goods for melting, however they were demanding a profit of around 10000, which I was simply unwilling to allow. They stormed off, and are now refusing to trade. It seems that the mountainhomes are unaware of the great battle that has just taken place.
27th Timber
Despite my instructions and pleads there are still two dwarves out in the open too injured to make it home.
9th Moonstone
Work has begun on improving the fort, I have designated for fortifications to replace the outer walls so that we can have archer support when we are under siege.
16th Moonstone
Progress is slow, my attempts at mining out rooms for two of my projects have been ignored in favour of mining more ores.
22nd Moonstone
Finally work has begun on a couple of my projects...
27th Moonstone
One of the Hammerlords has bestowed a name upon his shield.
13th Opal
Finally! One of the projects is complete! I have created a shooting range for my archers, so that they can improve as quickly as possible. It is also a use for the range of creatures that have been found in the underfort. I did not put the cave dragon in there as I feel it would be good for food if an emergency occurs.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SIEVU.jpg)
21st Opal
We now have a grand total of 14 adamantine wafers. I am resisting the temptaion to make them into armour and/or weapons until we have a legendary dwarf in either, I want to make the material count!
8th Obsidian
One of our surgeons has been taken by a fey mood! He has claimed a craftdwarves workshop. I was very much hoping he would claim a forge. I was attempting to create a giant cave spider silk farm, however the bridges used to allow the spider to see the bait seem to be unfunctional, and what's more the spider seems incapable of firing webs anyway. All all bit of a fail really.
9th Granite
The surgeon that has claimed the workshop is demanding yarn, despite him clearly knowing that there is none available, and the only chance we have of obtaining any is via trade. Hopefully a caravan will arrive in time before he goes crazy...
17th Granite
Some migrants have arrived. 19 to be precise, bringing our total population to an amazing 182! A few of the migrants had weapons skills and so were imediately drafted into the military.
26th Granite
A dwarven baby has been impaled on the military's training spikes. One wonders whether it is still worth it. I conclude that it is.
2nd Slate
The archery range has begun operations. A goblin that was placed in there is fully armoured, and so should be good practise for the archers.
7th Slate
Whilst attempting to move the captured cave dragon to a tomb it escaped and had to be slain. This is a great loss for Horsemurdered.
11th Slate
In responce to this, a Macedwarf enters a rage and destroys a bridge. Hellbeast slayer N3rV smashes his skull through his brain pretty quickly, so no more damage was done.
22nd Slate
We are too late, the surgeon has entered a beserk rage and is attacking the magma forge workers. The military has been called to deal with him.
15th Felsite
An elven caravan has arrived. However I doubt they will have anything useful for me. The fort at the moment seems entirely self sufficient. As the dragon has been slain I had to find something else to place in my tomb. Fortunately the elves brought a giant desert scorpion!
15th Hematite
Our glassmaker has been taken by a fey mood! Hopefully this time it will have a better outcome than before...
He is requesting yarn like the last dwarf who went insane. I have decided that I have to seal him in, and hope that his death is not too traumatic for the fort...
19th Hematite
Finally, my tomb is complete, one could say that it is a tad extravagent...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SIEVU.jpg)
24th Hematite
Well it turns out that one of the masons was trapped in with the glassmaker, it is too late to try to save him, he will die for the cause.
10th Malachite
Another baby has just been impaled. Still worth it...
11th Malachite
More migrants, population is now up to 187
16th Malachite
Today is a grand day - the first adamantine weapons made under my supervision. I have designated one of each bladed weapon.
I have equipped it to one of our trainee axedwarves as most of the military are hammerdwarves.
21st Malachite
The stores are a disgrace, however I feel my remaining time left here could be better spent than sorting them all out, I will just have to hope that the next overseer has the tenacity to sort it out.
3rd Galena
The glassmaker that was taken by a fey mood has no gone insane, and murdered the other dwarf that was trapped in with him.
Hopefully he won't eat the other dwarf else he will survive for a lot longer...
Apparently I use the word murdered to liberally. The other dwarf managed to kill the glassmaker. He is being mined out of his cage and will be treated for his extensive wounds straight away.
8th Galena
I have decided that the current living facilities of the fort are the worst aspect, so I have decided to completely overhaul it.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/5FCBd.jpg)
24th Galena
A fire imp has somehow managed to make it into the magma forges. I swear that I remember a previous overseer improving the defences in the magma forges to prevent this...
A hammerdwarf kills the fire imp before it manages to do any damage. However he did bite the Imp's hand off. I may have to have quiet words with him at some point in the near future.
The fort's overall value is around 1.8 million. It would be nice if I could hit 2 million before the end of my tenure.
12th Limestone
As I think that there will be no more excitement left in my year, a Forgotten Beast arrives!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Wenvc.jpg)
All the army has be pulled down to the underfort to try and defend. If we can funnel it into a chokepoint we should be able to hold without too much difficulty, especially if the marksmen get into position.
Well, that was a little bit of an anticlimax. The Forgotten Beast attacks three of our legendary hammerdwarves and a legendary speardwarf and gets mauled. No serious injuries were taken by any of the military. One of our up and coming axedwarves actually managed to cut the beast in half with his new adamantine battleaxe.
A baby that died to the spinning spears has risen again and is haunting the under under fort. So much for no excitement...
20th Limestone
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Woow1.jpg)
And another Forgotten Beast!! This time in a pretty harmless area, however I have stationed the military just in preparation.
When I say in a pretty harmelss area, I was apparently wrong, the beast is exceptionally fast, and the military is only just in location to intercept it.
Apparently "Giant slayer" is a very apt title. He ran out alone into the cavern and took on the beast by himself. After a prolonged fight and after sustaining some injuries, he finally manages to get a killing blow to the head of the beast.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/dXq5n.jpg)
Just over a week since the last forgotten beast was slain, a third one this year appears. This time near the Underfort, it is moving quickly, however there is already a squad in place. To get to the location it is attempting to attack it has to pass over two previously slain beasts, soon this area will be a burial ground for monsters.
As a legendary hammerdwarf runs out to intercept the beast, a giant cloud of dust engulfs him and throws him to the ground.
The rest of the army rushes in, however a second blast of dust sends them all reeling. In the confusion the beast pounces on N3rV the hellbeast slayer and bites his head off in one motion. The beast then bites one of the hammerlords in two with its mandibles!
A swordsdwarf gets slammed so hard into a wall that his spine breaks and dies insantly, Fontong rushes to try and kill the beast, but gets stunned by the cloud of dust, and a bite to the head punctures his brain.
Another hammerlord gets blasted into a wall and dies also. One of the new recruits and a speardwarf also get dismembered after getting knocked down by the dustcloud.
The iron hand also falls to a bite to the head by the beast's giant mandibles. Two more Hammerdwarves are struck down. In another burst of the dust cloud two more hammerdwarves get mutilated, one after losing both his legs dies by bleeding out, whilst the other is decapitated like most of his bretheren.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/lmyg0.jpg) Imba
The giant slayer finally falls, after taking down many forgotten beasts. The outcome of this fight seems bleak. Two more dwarves meet the deadly mandibles, one a hammerdwarf and one an axedwarf.
A wrestler and a legendary macedwarf also fall.
Finally the beast falls, after expelling another fatal cloud of dust, the recoil knocks him backwards and in the confusion a dwarf manages to land a fatal blow, however no one can ascertain who actually killed the beast.
The army has taken a significant blow, leaving only 9 dwarves left rather than the 20 something that there was previously.
All in all 21 dwarves died from the attack. A woodcrafter has also come back from the dead to haunt the fortress.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/FKohd.jpg) Not a good sight...
A new generation of military will have to be constructed. The only positive is that the weaponsmith is approaching legendary recognition, and should be able to equip the military with the best possible adamantite equipment.
8th Sandstone
A baby is born and some migrants arrive, the fortress is on it's way to recovering from the horrors of the previous month.
The population is now back up to 175, and any dwarves with the slightest combat skills have been drafted into the military.
1st Timber
All in all a pretty exciting year. I have overhauled quite a few of the fortresses' systems, and managed so survive a few major attacks. I hope the military can return to its former glory, especially now the adamantite is being put to proper use.
|
Oh yeah, lol sorry about Fontong and N3rV dying, not my fault, honest!
|
With such a high wealth and the current military decimated it seems like the next ruler is going to have some FUN.
|
Yeah that wealth level with an untrained military is going to be ridiculous :-) Hopefully the fortifications and archers will help out!

Oh wow, I was just thinking 'this fort is looking invincible!' and then that happens.
Awesome fight : D
|
Holy check, a huge goblin siege and THREE forgotten beasts in one year?! That's beyond ridiculous. I'm thinking moving the save from a 31.18 to 31.25-game might have done something to bug it out, as this is far more than what's usually spawning. That being said though, it's also far more awesome than usual, so let's keep it that way!
Oh, also, more immigrants? I guess nobody mended the d_init to popcap 80.
Work has begun on improving the fort, I have designated for fortifications to replace the outer walls so that we can have archer support when we are under siege.
Elite goblin archers will enjoy this change.

They are a level up, so they should be alright. The population was ~160 when I got it, lol so no, no mention of the pop-cap.
|
This is the saddest installment of the series yet. That last beast was ridiculous, what kind of ability stuns like that? The next lord has to make a enormous tomb for the slain.
This is so fun to read.
|
So, am I up next? I seem to recall nttea writing that he wasn't able to play. Is this correct?
|
I can't believe my small danger room has gotten so many kills, unless someone expanded it when i made it, it was only 4 squares large.
|
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Oh well, at least I died in a somewhat epic way.
May I ask for the new axedude with the adamantite axe to be named as my successor?
Epic Epic fort, can't wait till the next installment from whoever plays....we need more military now!!!!!
so much FUN will happen next if next massive attack comes in before the new military is up and running.
|
When I saw that N3rV went down my mouth opened, holy shit this is epic!
|
Artists rendition of the forgotten beast: + Show Spoiler +
Can't believe it killed everyone. Previous beasts were slain one-on-one. I'm glad this report contained a lot of FUN
|
This thread has gotten me started on Dwarf Fortress... needless to say all the extra hours this week have been quickly eaten away by it!
Awesome game, Awesome thread.
|
That last forgotten beast must be somesort of god lol so sad my favorite character died D: IRON HAND!!!! noooooooooo
|
Never played the game, but I have to say I am highly amused by this thread and the reports :D I can only imagine a coalition of angry dwarf mothers petitioning the mayor to get rid of that obsene, dangerous baby-killing machine, only to have shawty dismiss them with a curt "Still worth it."
|
^^This inspires me to make a fortress wide 'danger room' system for a sparta style fortress. The weak will be culled by relentless wooden training spear! Everyone will be drafted into the military and fight when there's an invasion. Better yet, I should bar myself from building any sort of fortification so that my dwarves have to face every danger head on.
|
You know I actually thought the fort was just going to end in that last fight. I still don't really know how the beast died, and none of the remaining living dwarves had gotten the kill, so it was either an act of valiance by a dying dwarf lol, or the beast knocked itself into a wall.
|
Things are looking dicey at the moment. A siege arrived just two game weeks after I started playing. The drawbridge isn't working.
Drums... drums from the deep.
They're coming!
|
:-) How is the military looking? Must be fairly unskilled after the last year?
|
Scratch that. I took the role of the militia commander and she/I was caught outside the malfunctioning drawbridge when they attacked. While I lost about 30 civilians and half the recruits, the commander and two other elite soldiers took down everyone by themselves. I fucking charged into 8-10 goblin bowmen, accompanied by trolls, entered a military trance and didn't even get a scratch.
That was amazing.
|
Why did I have to die T.T
So many goblins would have fallen to my ax....stupid imba dust.
Oh well, can't wait for the full report and more pictures!
|
Shitty news, guys. My computer had the poor manners to bluescreen a few months into the game, meaning the all progress made since I loaded the save up was lost. Since I won't have time to play that much until tomorrow evening (was planning on finishing up and posting the report later today), perhaps it's better that the person next in takes over. I'll either skip to the end of the queue or right after the current one.
If the person next in line wishes it, I can send what I have written to him/her and have it incorporated into some fever dream or such.
|
If SpectralFremen doesn't show up I'll take over the fort for the year.
|
I am so confused but the thread is entertaining nonetheless.
|
So, did anyone pick up the save? I've got some time starting tomorrow otherwise. Just let me know!
|
alak, it doesnt look like anyone has started playing (lankill said he would but never said he had started) . iirc its your turn anyway. if you have time tomorrow i think you should play (try to finish) then. thats alot easier than trying to negotiate someone taking over for you.
apparently the tl app and my phones auto caps dont work together

So much FUN! Hahaha, good luck next dwarf king.

Alright, I'll get right back to work. I'll be able to fix that drawbridge and the causeway of death, at least.
|
Update: I'll be posting the report with an hour or two.
|
YAY!
Cant wait for the next installment
|
Awesome! I wonder what FUN happened this time!
|
wow that damn forgotten beast
i don't know how this game works but do you think you could have killed it with minimal losses if u shot it with a bunch of bow dwarves?
|
Looking forward to the next installment of the chronicles of horsemurdered Alak.
God I wish I could play this game properly and join in.
|
LETS DO THIS LEEERROOOOYYYYY JJJEEEEENNKKIINSS
I'm pretty amazed with how this fort has come. Apart from the final, acid cloud spewing destroyer of champions, overwatchers have been putting down beast left right and center.

Region
1st Timber: Well then, I'm here. As I walk through the gates, and I use the term gates very generously, to Horsemurdered I immediately see the reason they called me here. These are the dwarves that held off three forgotten beasts in a single year? I immediately dismiss that report as nonsense. The lone guard that greeted me practically glared at me when I arrived! No escort to take me into the keep, A pile of corpses next to the causeway... This is going to be one hell of a year. My first task will be to go through the rosters, the logs from my predecessor and inspect the forges.
2st Timber: Good news and bad news. The good news is that the armory is surprisingly well stocked. We have plenty of bars of various metals with which to produced weapons and armor. By the gods, they've even struck adamantium here!
Now the bad news is that there are a mere 15 soldiers left alive in the entire fortress, and they're mainly using whatever equipment they damn please. No cohesion, no unity, no order. Well, we'll see about that...
5th Timber: Stepped in the remains of a fire imp this morning. If this place isn't cleaned up by the end of the week there'll be hell to pay. I've also organized the men into more coherent groups, giving all the squads a signature weapon to use.
6th Timber: IDIOT! Who the hell brings a BABY into the danger room? I swear, when the next batch of goblins arrive I'll put that sorry bastard on the front line. Naked.
12th Timber: One of my marksdwarves, Shawty, bled to death outside the fort. Why no one bothered to tell ME that we had an injured dwarf out there is beyond me.
14th Timber: Curses! The goblins come in great numbers! The drawbridge is operational and the causeway is widened, but the traps are not done yet. I guess we'll do this the old fashioned way!
15th Timber: I had a strange dream. I dreamt I was outside the walls when the goblins came. I need to dream like this more often!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/F5qe6.jpg)
19th Timber: After trapping half of the enemy force inside the walls, the troops mopped up the few stragglers who survived the traps. I shall have to discuss the wisdom of leaping without looking on a narrow causeway with a few of my subordinates, once they've gotten seen to by the medical dwarf. The remaining invaders have fled and peace is restored. For now.
9th Moonstone: I have ordered construction of a slender spire on top of the keep. Enemies foolish enough to get caught in our cages shall from time to time be thrown off the top into the brook far, far below. Morale will surely be at an all-time high once the construction is done.
28th Moonstone: An emphasis must be put on defense at this time. As such, the entrance to the fortress has been expanded and will be heavily trapped. Let's see those trolls and goblins walk through a few dozen spiked balls!
Shockingly, no road has been constructed yet. I don't know about the rest, but THIS dwarf refuses to have the entrance to MY fortress covered in dirt! What are we, elves?
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/TXh4p.jpg)
11th Opal: There is some grumbling from the some of the new recruits about long training times. I've tossed a goblin off the Death's Tip in their honor, but to no apparent effect. Ungrateful bastards.
29th Opal: The underground is, like it usually is, an excellent place to bloody the new recruits. I think I'll make regular trips here with the young'ins and have them whack a creeping eye or two.
7th Obsidian: The road is nearing completion, the traps are being put in place but most importantly, progress is being made on adamantite gear for the soldiers. Speaking of which...
A big, scaly bristleworm appeared in the underground. I hesitate to send the newer recruits after a forgotten beast so soon, so I might just deal with this myself. A dwarf's work is never done... My pay had better become better soon, or I'll be tossing more than goblins off Death's Tip.
8th Obsidian: The beast is dead but...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/tJzlG.jpg)
There will be words.
20th Obsidian: The monotony of getting this place into some semblance of order was broken by a kobold thief. One might think that the sight of a few odd dozen dead goblins might discourage pretty much anyone, much less a scum-eating coward of a kobold from approaching, but then again, my only interactions with kobolds have historically been through poking holes in them.
22nd Granite: No goblins or anything in more than two months. I'm itching for a fight, but instead I have to spend my days ordering statues built and designating living space for individual dwarves. The next time an aide comes with a list of bedless dwarves he'll feel my boot.
I need a drink.
7th Slate: Tossed more goblins of the Tip. Just realized that we fish in that brook. No wonder the fish has been slightly off lately.
16th Slate: Migrants? Migrants? Just what this place needs, more gem setters and potash makers. What is potash anyway? Sounds like what you get when you set a potato on fire, if you ask me.
1st Felsite: Felsite has come, and I've decided that my tenure should not last longer than a year. I wish to leave a mark that will impress upon our enemies the foolishness of even attempting an attack on us. My best architects are drawing up the plans now for a drowning chamber that will lie across the chasm east of the keep. The shattered corpses of the victims of Death's Tip will mingle with the drowned, bloated corpses of Alak's Aquadeath-o-tron 2000!
My doctor tells me that this desire is not normal, and that I should probably be locked up somewhere. I told him that no one is perfect but an angry dwarf with a spear comes damn close and he conceded the point.
12th Hematite: My architects are not working fast enough for my liking. They keep babbling at me about archimedes screws, water pressure and piping, but their excuses only serve to test my patience.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Q4zTr.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/oxnm4.jpg)
Some elves stopped by as well. Ordinarily I wouldn't give them a second glance, but if there's anything elves do well, it's carrying their wood around. Since the surrounding area is quite low on decent lumber, I gave them a bunch of useless mugs to do what they wish with. They seemed far too pleased with that trade for my comfort.
24th Malachite: A carpenter rushes into my training area, excitedly babbling about something amazing or other. With complete disregard for common sense, I decided to follow him down to the workshops to see what the fuss was about. The carpenter proudly points at a bed. The bed appears to have a name. It also appears to have spikes.
This lack of action clearly has turned everyone stark, raving mad.
28th Malachite: It is complete! The drowning chamber is complete! The procedure can be conveniently viewed from the statue garden on the roof of the keep.
Spectators can listen with delight to the pitiful screams as the victim plummets into the pit, cheer as the torrent of water fills the pit to the brim with unforgiving water and take satisfaction in the fact that yet another enemy of all dwarvendom has been brought to a well deserved end!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gnufi.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/u7dVR.jpg)
23rd Limestone: Most likely my final entry in this log. I'm pleased to say that I'll be leaving this place in better shape than I found it. While it has been a relatively quiet year, and thus wasting my not inconsiderable talents, I feel relatively pleased with the year. If nothing else I've heard enough goblin screams to keep me happy for a good while. I will definitely not be missing the endless nagging of various mayors, bookkeepers and aides, that's for damn sure.
28th Sandstone: That's it, my tenure is up. A mere siege and a single forgotten beast has hardly merited my presence here, but I shall remain here for now. I hear the view of the Aquadeath-o-tron is quite lovely from the Tip...
------------------------
There! All in all a very unexciting year, so I had to make up something to do all the while. I encourage following players to start work on a magma pump shaft. Magma leads to FUN!
I've also seen to the front of the fort and made sure that adamantite weapons and armor are in use. I like it when all my dwarves in a single squad share the same type of gear, so that's been arranged as well. The squad size could likely be increased in size at some point, and I didn't bother with marksdwarves either, so those might need reproducing.
|
You have done great things sir, great things.
I think now that we have a really good base fort down we can start focusing on the really FUN constructions even more. xD
|
Are you actually kidding me!? I just died? god dammit!

Yeah I could have, but there were only 2 in the whole fort, and due to the stockpile settings they spent ages running up and down the stairs to equip themselves, all whilst everyone else died
|
It's a damn shame that I lost the first save. I was caught completely off guard by the siege and lost about 40 dwarves, but I found out something about the militia commander: She's badass. I had taken that character since it fitted well into my writing, and I was thinking about how I was supposed to salvage the remainder of the story when I saw that she was down fishing when a dozen goblins with bows came after her.
She stabbed a crawler in the head, bum rushed the bowmen, most likely screaming her lungs off. Not a single arrow hit her, she made Neo look like a paper cutout in comparison. After single handedly driving off all the bowmen and a few bonus trolls, the other two legendary warriors finally deigned the conflict worthy of their attention and made salsa out of the rest of the invaders as well. Ah, but it was glorious.
Only problem was that the single tile causeway got completely flooded with dwarves once I set the civ alert to inactive. The pathfinding broke and no amount of workarounds made any difference. I had resigned myself to having another 20 dwarves or so starve to death when I got the blue screen.
|
I still want to see a goblin thrown of a tower and get hit by a ballista arrow before he hits the floor *rubs hands*
Also you guys need more mace dwarfs, they are hilarious :D
|
Oh my god I need this game.
|
Haha sick turn!
I want to study the mechanics of your drowning chamber!
|
Haha this is amazing !
These stories are so entertaining.
|
Agreed. Keep up the good fight!

Since Alak just finished, the next one up should be SpectralFremen, unless he's played before. TnkTed is usually keeping track, but he's away for the week, and I'm terrible at remembering names.
Alak, you should send the updated region file to the next person in line, if you haven't already. PM him here on TL and get his email, or post it on a free site such as www.mediafire.com and give him a link to the file.
|
I did post the mediafire link to the region on top of my report, but I went ahead and PMed spectralfremen anyway. Hopefully he'll get on it asap!
|
If he (SpectralFremen) hasn't responded within 24 hours or posted here, send it on to the next one, which will be ArcticVanguard.
|
neeeed more reports! Currently playing my first fortress, hopefully after a few games I will have enough of a handle to jump in on this or the next one ;P

Hi guys, I'm back! I updated the OP with all the stuff and added the people who wanted to play (if I missed you I promise I'll put you in the order you deserve).
The two updates that happened while i was gone are SO AWESOME oh man. We should get some superconstructions going up; we could get some cool auto-traps set up. Perhaps a pitfall into a cave of rabid, unfed wardogs?
If spectralfremen hasn't posted by June 13 2011 05:08, the save will be opened up to the community (which it looks like he hasn't). Anyone that wishes to pick up the save is welcome to do so. The first person to post that they are ready to play and have downloaded everything will be able to begin. After this person goes, ArcticVanguard will take his turn.
Also, I'm thinking of starting the second fortress succession already. This next one will be a hyper difficult one however; I'll be choosing either an extremely challenging embark (ie one with an aquifer, in the middle of a frozen ocean) or starting with, say, 18 goats and no plump helmet seeds... in the desert. If you guys have any suggestions you should post em here.
|
I will play if he does not show up.

Ulfsark, you're up! Yea, I'm definately looking forward for that. No idea when it'll come though, and I imagine the first half dozen or so releases of it will be buggy to near-unplayableness, so it might take quite a while before it's actually available in a playable state.
|
I've heard good things about the Genesis mod. I've yet to test it myself, but perhaps that might be something to look into for the second game?
|
Genesis mod is amazing, simply the best addition to the game I've found yet.
I would vote for the next game to support that mod!
|
|
what is the genesis mod? I've never heard of it.

Awesome, where do I get the save?
Never mind found it, should have the write up be the end of tomorrow.
Just a warning, Mine is really really long, its practically a saga, I am debating posting a long version and a short version. I am at my 34th screenshot right now... I have 5 months to go still...

post the long version

Here is the tale of Ulfsark. This took me a while, I ended up cutting out a lot of stuff that I wrote early on. If anything doesn’t make sense it’s because I did it late at night and did it pretty much in one sitting. I put more effort into this than almost everything I ever wrote in high school (not hard to do), It is very long and has a large number of screenshots so I spoilered it.
Thank you for the chance to play and GLHF to whoever is up next!
Diary of Ulfsark, Lord of Horsemurdered 257-258
+ Show Spoiler + 1st of TimberAs I approach the Fortress I am greeted by over 60 idlers! We cannot have this! I will put the boot to each and every lazy dwarf ass if I have to! I shall have the talentless peasant dwarfs do the hauling and dirty work so our skilled artisans can spend more time perfecting their crafts. Also I shall set up a dedicated mining squad so that we have a steady supply of minerals and gems to feed our furnaces. 3rd of TimberThe fortress entrance seems too welcoming for goblins, I have ordered mass production of cages and mechanisms for cage traps. This will slow the advance of the goblin horde. Also I enjoy having a few goblin cages around. 10th of TimberMy new project shall bring forth endless torment and suffering for putrid goblin filth as well as practice for our warriors. It shall be a grand arena! Spikes are being made for the pit that will surround it. 12th of TimberToday I paid homage to Shawty in his tomb. I left him a pair of spider silk trousers. Hopefully this will help aid his spirit and he will watch over me as I mercilessly slaughter goblins in his name. It is said he was the first to train marksdwarfs that they may rain death upon our wretched green foes. Hail Shawty! (Whoever made Shawty’s tomb is Gosu!) 14th of TimberThe lowlifes I mean…peasants are working on removing slopes so that our enemies will be forced through a smaller patch which will be filled with traps! Oh I cannot wait for the bloodshed! A wall will be constructed to follow the road to force the goblin cattle’s movement even more. 16th of TimberA caravan of dwarfs has arrived from the motherland, According to our bookkeeper we must make more offerings and a road system to rival the motherland if we wish to become the capital. I shall offer these dwarfs some petty trinkets and the like. However I have realized we do not have many items for trade, I will have our craftsdwarfs make more trinkets for the other races to lust after. 18th of Timber![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rsieIh.jpg) An ambush has arrived! To arms men! One of our own gets knocked into the pond! Whoever constructed the ramp out of this pool is a genius! Before long the goblins fell to their knees like a dwarf whore after a barrel of brew! 22nd of TimberProduction of a siege workshop has begun, These dwarfs have never seen a goblin impaled upon a ballista bolt. What a shame. 23rd of TimberMoldath Igathvabok has a very nice rack, She made a pretty nice weapon holder too! 5th of MoonstoneIt has been drawn to my attention that we do not have an infirmary up and running, I will make sure I tend to this with great haste. Our chief medical dwarf Tnkted will be reprimanded for not bringing this to my attention sooner! Apparently Tnkted has been giving all our females physicals since he has not had the proper apparatus for his medical work. (I later found the other hospital, Oh well I guess we have 2 now, even dwarfs know the dangers of monopoly!) 11th of Moonstone![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/e4MNX.jpg) A channel has been dug to force the goblins into the traps even more! I shall fill it with any spikes I have left over after the arena is complete. Sadly I am still awaiting more mechanisms before the trap field can be complete. I think I may make a tower so that I may observe the trap field in action whilst sipping on strawberry win and enjoying some rat weed. 2nd of OpalThe first ballistae have been made! I plan on making 5 of them, The smiths have been ordered to create arrow heads so that they may chew through goblin flesh like a Forgotten beast chews through a lamb! 4th of OpalThe ghost of a baby skewered by our training room has returned. Its ghostly crying is more fell of a noise than that of a forgotten beast! A snow storm arrived today as well, Some of the dwarfs were making snow goblins before I scolded them to get back to their labors. 9th of OpalOur weapon stores are FULL of almost worthless bronze weapons. They shall be used in weapon traps so that they may still have their thirst for blood quenched. 28th of Opal![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/5wnvY.jpg) The arena fighting area is almost complete. Once the finals spikes are in place and all the chairs are added we can being the merciless slaughter I mean… tests of strength! 15th of Obsidian Another Goblin ambush had been spotted on the horizon! A mechanic has been struck down by the goblin scum! I need every mechanic I can get for my precious goblin slaying devices! Our military makes short work of the green filth, their blood shall aid the vegetation. 23rd of ObsidianThe spikes in the pit below the arena are almost done. The first match scheduled upon completion shall be a Goblin thief versus a very hungry leopard. It shall be a great feast I mean… fight. 8th of GraniteA dwarf has grown attached to an adamantine short sword! I must admit, it is a fine blade. I asked this hammer dwarf why he wields a blade, however he did not answer my inquiry. 9th of GraniteThe Arena is complete! It shall see many years of pain and suffering I mean… glorious heroic battles! The Leopard cage and Goblin Thief cage are being linked to a lever, once this is complete the massacre I mean… event can begin! 17th of GraniteThe Ballistae are complete! Look at them, they are still virgins. They crave blood! I shall give them what they desire! 9th of SlateI have demanded that earrings be made! And no of course they are not for myself, why would they be? (Mandate ended before I could get a screenshot sadly) 15th of SlateThe arena is complete! Soon the shall behold a bloodbath I mean… A showing of skill. I have ordered the lever to be pulled! Some dwarfs have joined me for this event. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qkb6E.jpg) The jaguar knocks the thief into the spike pit! What a glorious display, in that pit he will meet a most pointy end, I am sure his screams will pierce our halls. 20th of SlateSeveral migrants have arrived this day. They brought us from 174 sturdy dwarfs to 194! My work shall be completed even quicker! 20th of SlateA forgotten beast has arrived! I shall ensure that it will be forgotten for good! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/etbCl.jpg) Alak charges headfirst into the fray! No wonder this beast has been forgotten, he was slain with several blows by ours dwarfs. Alak did not get the kill however he distracted the beast until reinforcements arrived. Alak has quite an impressive military history. I have a great respect for his relentless slaughter of green skinned vermin. 1st of FelsiteMore tombs are being dug for our growing population. 5th of FelsiteI have declared a ban upon the export of all earrings. And No they aren’t for me! I am looking out for our fortress’s female population! 11th of FelsiteBlasted goblin filth! I smelt them 500 tiles away! A blasted siege is upon us. Hell, It’s about time! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/pclVQ.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/fMuv8.jpg) I shouted the dwarfs to raise the eastern drawbridge. Hopefully the lever nearest to the bridge is the one that raises it. There is a party of Filth at the North East corner of our lands across the chasm, 2 more at the north west and south west. The south west is heavily protected by our traps. By this logic I have ordered the squads to focus on the enemies approaching from the North. Udib one of our loyal hammer lords has been struck down! Along with his faithful hound! The cage traps have caught several trolls and goblins. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/DnBmoh.jpg) A militia captain thought it be wise to bring a baby into battle to get them trained from a young age. Young age is the only age that baby will ever experience… 13th of Felsite![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/l5YCx.jpg) The first squad of putrid beings has been decimated. The streets run with their blood. The 2nd squad has been thinned thanks to my traps. Luckily for fans of the arena they were trapped in cages! Several lowlifes I mean peasants were made into archery targets as goblin marksmen sent death across the chasm making dwarfs into archery targets. I should make ballistae facing over the chasm near the windmills. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/uHZym.jpg) With the drawbridge up and orders to kill the squad a few of my dwarfs hurl themselves into the brook and ride its current to a point where they can ascend to the cliffs above and put an end to the goblin curse upon our lands. (happened too fast for me to get a screenshot sadly) 15th of FelsiteThe siege has been lifted thanks to our marine dwarfs that braved the current to get across the chasm. Rumor has it they have insane DPS. The cacophony of battle was soon replaced with the breaking of barrels and the drone of laughter echoing deep within the earth and the dwarfs rejoiced after their victory. 16th of FelsiteAst the child has created a cedar cup! I still don’t like kids… This cup has an image of the fortress being founded… Isn’t that cute. 17th of FelsiteAn Elven caravan has arrived, I hope they have some dangerous I mean… cuddly animals for my death pit… I mean arena. 11th of HematiteI have acquired a Grizzly bear and a jaguar through trading with the elves. These will provide lots of entertainment. 18th of HematiteThe bastards elected me out of office! No matter, My axe makes a strong argument, I am back in charge now. 23rd of HematiteTosid, A hammer lord has been lonely recently. So I assigned him 29 war dogs. 25th of HematiteTosid Let his dogs follow him into the resilience training room… No wonder his parents wouldn’t let you have a puppy when he was younger. 10 of his dogs were impaled upon spikes. I have made the door so it cannot be passed by pets. 9th of GalenaA forgotten beast has arisen from the depths! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/cuZ2D.jpg) This beast was more trivial than forgotten. At the least it provided some entertainment for the soldiers. 27th of GalenaGhastly children keep terrorizing this place! Oh and a few ghosts of dead babies have been stopping by as well. 10th of SandstoneI have been elected mayor once more! The dwarfs will be saddened once my term is up. 21st of Sandstone Just when I thought I could relax, another beast rears its ugly head from unknown depths of the earth. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/QbA5f.jpg) The beast is slain with only a few scratches here and there. 27th of Sandstone We have laid to rest many of our dead that we did not have coffins for. Their souls thank us. 28th of SandstoneOne of our stone crafters has become possessed! I hope he does not cause too much trouble for himself or others. 29th of SandstoneI have been elected mayor once more however I am afraid this is the end of my term. I am glad to have added to this establishment’s defenses and given it a pit of death I mean… An arena!
Hopefully you enjoyed it, let me know if anything is messed up/mispelled, its 4:30 AM for me right now so hopefully it is still comprehensible.

wow, I was blown away... I clicked the spoiler and the scroll bar just went from big > very smallllll. Nice... Thanks a lot for the story.

Haha another great installment!
I like the different personas that keep coming through, the latest being particularly bloodthirsty
|
Hahahah, that one was great! Arenas are always hilarious. I remember I made a labryth once, but unfortunately the goblins just beelined straight to the exit thanks to the pathing.
ArcticVanguard is next if he posts within the next 24 hours.

You can move it to the last core, so the first one will remain with pretty much everyother task and the third will be exclusively to DF. It nets me a good 20% increase in FPS.

Is someone playing the save now? When will the next installment be up?

On June 17 2011 08:53 stormtemplar wrote: Question. How do I move cages around? I want to have a gladiatorial battle in my honor. Cages can be both empty, filled with one prisoner, or many. They can also be free, or constructed in place. I guess yours are free since you got prisoners in them, probably from cage traps. Either works, just different techniques.
Free cages are placed in animal stockpiles, and using the method below, with a grid of hatches over holes in the middle of the stockpile, you can easily dump them straight down into the holes, with no danger apart from thieves escaping. Don´t forget the hatches though. Free cages are also much quicker to transport, and using this method, can quickly throw them all into the arena.
The slower method involve constructed cages. Construct the relevant cages in the arena, they are often named "Goblin Cage", etc, and then link them to a lever through mechanisms. When the lever is pulled, the cage is deconstructed and emptied, with no danger of thieves escaping. That can however happen if you move all the prisoners to one cage, because they might escape while being moved. That method is better for reducing the number of cages you need to link up to your levers though, but I suggest you only use it for tame animals, not hostile prisoners, so for the 50 dogs you send on the goblins.
Always keep soldiers nearby when pitting thieves or moving hostiles between cages. Beware that if many are moved at the same time, one free might spook your dorfs to release their own prisoners.
The free cage method is described below. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Mass_pitting

NOOOOOOOO! I was halfway done and the game quit. I didn't save ):
I have lost 2 dwarfs so far. One was a cook who got ambushed by a party of goblins who payed dearly for it. The second was my captain of the guard (I had assigned him the position less that 2 minutes ago) and one of my hammerdwarfs went on a tantrum killing two animals and my captain of the guard. I did not set up the scheduling right so he was on patrol constantly and his pet died and I was still in the process of building a memorial hall.

I've updated the OP. If ArcticVanguard doesn't post within 24 hours of the last savepost, the save will be up for grabs.

I'm going to pick up the save. This place is a fucking mess...
EDIT: Do you want me to impose some sort of population cap on the game while i play? We're at 193.

No, let it play out normally. the population caps at 200 anyway.

Right now I have LNP set to 500 for pop cap. I'll put it back down to 200 if you want.
On June 21 2011 14:03 stormtemplar wrote: It didn't for me. Immigrants didn't come but babies kept being born after 200. I had a pop cap set too.
Also a funny story for you. That part where I wrote siege while talking about rocks? The siege actually came AS I WROTE about rocks and bordom.
I think the population cap is for migrants. There is a different cap for children born in the fort.
IIRC: you can set your cap to like 15 and then grow only through dwarf reproduction.

The game crashed so this wont be in the official report, but I wanted to share with you all how baller our kittens are...
|
Are game crashes really that common in this game? Seems like half the people that play lose a save before the end of their year...
|
i cant remember ever having a game crash on me.
|
Wasn't the save converted at some point? Might be something along those lines.
|
I think the game file is so massive now that the game crashes occasionally. Yes nick, it might be a good idea to set the population cap at 200 so it doesn't get any bigger.
Also, as you play, when something awesome happens (FB appears, you just destroyed a seige, tantrum spiral etc) please remember to save and quit the game and then load it up again. That way you can just restart from the save of the last awesome thing that happened.

Here's what happened in Autumn 259 to the first day of spring 260.
+ Show Spoiler +1 Limestone, 259 I've been walking for days... How was I supposed to know that that was the princesses cat? Who in their right mind would have a cat for a pet for Urists's sake... Whats that up a head? Is that a goblin? A dead one? And another? There must be dozens of them? And dwarfs too? And hundreds of traps? What is this place? 2 Limestone, 259 After walking past about 500 traps and half that many creepy statues (seriously who the fuck needs this many statues) I finally made my way to what seems to be the center of the fort. The place was an absolute mess. Apparently their last leader abandoned them before his year of service was up – something about having to go on an adventure or something. Lazy prick. Long story short, apparently I look like I'm a natural leader or something because before I knew it they were cheering my name and electing me mayor. Who knew trying to organize a stockpile in an attempt to find some food would be asking for such trouble. Well, they're only asking for a year of my time – a bit more than a year I guess – so I'll try to stick around and help them out. Anything to hide me from the king and his wrath. Stupid cat. Of course, I immediately mandated that no sterling silver be exported; I fucking love sterling silver. 3 Limestone, 259 I noticed a small ballista battery overlooking the deathtrap known as the entrance to our fort on my way in. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ztUce.png) After surveying the inhabitants here I've noted only 6 siege operators – none of which are well trained. I’ve ordered the excavation of a siege operator training center where our dwarfs can fire catapults in order to increase their skill with siege engines. I also plan on restructuring the battery and increasing the number of ballistas it contains so that it grants more coverage. 4 Limestone, 259 The military was in shambles. I wonder why? Maybe it has something to do with the dozens of dead creatures outside. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/nZ3HQ.png) I assigned some new dwarfs to the military to make up for the assumed losses. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gychH.png) I also started the process to create some new “training rooms”. I'm going to make sure each squad has scheduled training and defending months. Hopefully this will give them some longevity. 9 Limestone, 259 In order to shore up the defenses for our underfort I added a bridge behind the doors so that we have a second line of defense. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/jhpOw.png) 12 Limestone, 259 A forgotten beast! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/CBU1l.png) Our new gate may keep him out but I will have the military on alert... 14 Limestone, 259 Blast! The bridge wasn't finished in time and the beast got into the underfort. I've dispatched the military to take care of it. 15 Limestone, 259 The military quickly dispatched the forgotten beast. Our militia captain 'stormtemplar' Zustashmelbilkilled it early in the fight with a vicious right-handed punch to the head which bruised the brain. 23 Limestone, 259 Our stockpiles are full and our workshops are cluttered. As of now I have ordered the ceasing of production of coffins, chairs, and mechanisms. Why the fuck do we have so many coffins any way? Its fucking depressing. 2 Sandstone, 259 A forgotten beast arrives! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/znXQ5.png) Learning from my mistakes last time I've decided to send the military out to meet it in battle if it encroaches on our turf. 3 Sandstone, 259 The beast has bypassed our traps! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/tzmI0.png) I have activated the troops. I hope they get there in time! ** The forgotten beast was slain by Alak. He truly is a slayer of forgotten beasts. 5 Sandstone, 259 In an effort to reduce the number of rotting corpses around the fortress I've designated a number of new butcheries, kitchens, butchers, and cooks. Hopefully this fixes the problem. 12 Sandstone, 259 After careful deliberation I decided to end the ban on exporting sterling silver goods. The world should behold the awesomeness of Horsemurdered! 15 Sandstone, 259 8 migrants arrived today. They're a little bit more than useless. 17 Sandstone, 259 I've mandated a single lever on the ballista battery level be connected to both the front and back gates for ease of use. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ltJiE.png) 22 Sandstone, 259 I just found 6 additional kitchens I missed on my first inspection. Guess I didn't need to add 5 more... Oh well, This place is a mess. I'm considering mining new workshop levels down further... 18 Timber, 259 ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yhE16.png) NOTE: The entire inner fort from workshops to lava should be included in the “Safety” burrow. It was a lot of work. Hope its right. We were easily able to fight off the goblins. The only one of our casualties was caused by our own traps... 25 Timber, 259 A horse has gone stark raving mad... Given the name of this place I'm getting a bit worried... 6 Opal, 259 I've completed a project. I've rigged the entrance path to the fort to collapse with the pull of a switch! (I think)8 Opal, 259 ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/KhyeP.png) Wonderful! As long as whomever takes this weapon doesn’t use it to bash heads in it should work out quite nicely. 19 Opal, 259 The new ballista battery is done. As shown below it offers us a much more complete kill zone. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/l2Ght.png) Now I just need those arrows to be completed and our training school up and running... 2 Obsidian, 259 Alak and Giginnomal Tileshruzos (his steel shield) sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g! 18 Obsidian, 259 A vile force of darkness has arrived! Unfortunately our ballista arrows aren’t done yet... I've ordered everyone inside and stationed the military near the gate. Hopefully it ends well! 24 Obsidian, 259 I've noticed a lot of free loaders around here lately. So, I've ordered all the idle dwarfs to haul stone from place to place – to build character. 25 Obsidian, 259 The goblins never ended up attacking. They just kind of milled around outside until they were mostly all captured in traps... I sent out the military to mop up the stragglers with ease. Maybe they were intimidated by the piles of dead goblins everywhere and got scared?
I'm working on my year now. I figure I should get us back on a Spring-Spring rotation...

Here is the save: [url blocked]HERE
I wasn't able to play until the Spring like I wanted to. I would have made it but I had a crash that set me back a ways and don't have enough time to dedicate to get there.
I'm not sure why it's so unstable. It probably has to do with the fact that the save was converted and we have about 200 dwarfs. We should try to enforce the pop cap next time. The game is running at 1/2 the speed it usually does on my computer which makes it way more painful when you crash or something. It also makes it hard to finish your turn. I probably played for nearly 5 hours and only finished a year. (just a guess).
ALSO THERE IS AN EASTER EGG TRY TO FIND IT!
Story Here: + Show Spoiler +17 Slate, 260 Nothing interesting has happened recently. I noticed that if we increase our road value and make a bit more offerings we could become the capital so I started some road projects. The siege operator training range is underway as well. 12 Felsite, 260 A wild forgotten beast appears! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/IEuFN.png) Our swordsdwarf was super effective, but four of our kind were slain including our beloved Alak. Apparently the beast secreted frozen extract which froze our dwarfs throats shut and caused them to suffocate. 19 Felsite, 260 An elven caravan arrived. I refuse to trade with them on principle. 26 Felsite, 260 I noticed our food stocks are actually declining. I've decided to dig out a large room and plant some more plump helmets – bitches love plump helmets. 16 Hematite, 260 A forgotten beast appears! The men are out to kill it already; they want revenge for their fallen brothers! ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/lz5OT.png) 11 Galena, 260 Urist Otilast keeps throwing tantrums. I have half a mind to treat him like a cat... Couldn't do that to a kid though could I? 12 Galena, 260 Urist threw one tantrum too many. I've sentenced him to single combat with a goblin before years end. TO THE DEATH! 19 Malachite, 260 He lasted longer than I though but eventually Urist was lain by our captive goblin maceman. What a shame. 16 Galena, 260 I intended to stay here through next spring but some of the kings men just arrived and are asking some questions. I've found a dim-wit who will pretend to be me for a small price so I'm going to escape while I can! Luckily, right now everyone is busy dealing with this: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/wx5P1.png) Its a perfect time to run! I do feel kind of bad, but I did get the siege operator training school running as well as construct a ballista battery and ensure they had enough food for the future. And, I started working on roads - which they need to become the capital.

I'm a huge noob, would love to take a turn tho.

I'm pretty sure the save is broken at this point. I downloaded the most recent save to check the fort out in a little more detail. Crashed twice within 15 minutes of play. Those were the only two times DF has every crashed on me and I've had forts in the 160-180 range, so I doubt it's just 20 more dwarves making the difference.

Default ASCII has been working for me. Though in the future it'd be nice to have an agreed upon tileset as the default ascii is really painful imo (mostly just the default way stone, grass, and open space is represented).

I tried once with Phoebus and once with default ASCII... I dunno, could be a fluke. Shame because I'd really like to take a spin. What I did see of the fort looked pretty epic (Mandatory: Nice tomb, Shawty. Chained scorpion is brilliant.)
I keep checking back to see the continuation of Horsemurdered :D

+ Show Spoiler + (Apparently my dwarf is a female, oh well!) 16 Galena 260.UNACCEPTABLE! Art they call it, detail they call it. Scribbles. Scrapings, I call it. Already I've confiscated a dozen detailing tools form various dwarves to try and stop the rampant graffiti plaguing the fortress. My efforts didn't go unnoticed and they've elected me mayor. Other dwarves murmur talks of fixing the election, but I know better. When you've gone through the trouble of birthing 8 children (wtf?) it's not that hard to win an election. All I really want to do is draw, but I need to put my desires aside for the good of the fort, and hopefully my coffers. 17 Galena 260.By the gods what have I inherited. I was heading down a flight of stairs when suddenly a giant beast stood before me entangled in combat with a dog! I quickly called in the military and they took care of it with no reported casualties. In my haste to run away from the beast I stumbled into some sort of barbaric arena. I don't know what's worse, the senseless slaughter I witnessed in the pit, or the fact that our citizens seemed intent on watching the games at expense of their own personal health. Several of the onlookers looked thin and pale and I couldn't even begin to guess when they last broke their fast. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/fexdO.png) This is not what being productive looks like. 1st Sandstone 260.I've gone and given our boys some motivation for learning how to fire the catapults as well as a way to reduce our prisoner population. Otherwise things have been pretty quite, and being the mayor is great. I lounge around all day eating and sleeping and no one gives me any crap. This place is a mess though, I've ordered a new area to be walled off for all this trash we're accumulating. I've also begun construction on a new bedchambers for yours truely. 21st Sandstone 260.DISASTER! It was a simple request A SIMPLE REQUEST. Our animals were starving. Put them out in the pasture I said. HOW HARD COULD THAT BE. I go down myself to make sure the job got done, no big deal right. Well those eyes, those red eyes full of frenzy. If I recover from my wounds I'll never forget them bearing down on me. I ran as fast as I could and thought I had slipped away, but next thing I know I'm falling down and I nearly impaled myself on some spikes. The ferocity of the beasts unleashed was terrifying and it took quite a while for the military to clean up the beasts, but I was unconscious by that point. I woke up many days later in a hospital bed barely able to move. Once I get out of this hosptial I'm going to have a very STERN talk with our Animal Trainer. Among the dead was our beloved TnkTed the Second Coming. What an uncermonous end to such a great dwarf. He will be greatly missed until the Third Coming. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/YJ6H9.png) Uh sorry bout that. I believe we lost 4 dwarves to this mess possibly including my dwarf's child. Also sorry about not getting a picture of the 5-6 dwarves + 2 mountain goats running around. 10th TimberThis fort is a mess screw all these leaders I should have their heads WHERE'S MY DOCTOR. KILL ALL DEERS. I will have blood! [My dwarf spent all this time throwing tantrums from her hospital bed] 24th TimberStill laid up in this godforsaken bed and my own children won't even come to visit me. INGRATES. At least I am comforted by the knowledge that as I write this the wheels are in motion to rid the fort of all deers. 6th Opal 260All is quiet. I'm still laid up in this damnable bed and barely anything has gotten done in my absence. I have put all the deer in a direct line of fire of our catapults, but our siege opertors can't hit the broadside of a barn so a lot of good that's done us. I've increased the size of our military and added a few crossbow dwarves as well as ordered some additional refuse areas so we may finally be rid of the corpses plaguing our fort. 12th Opal 260A child has mysteriously suffocated... foul play is suspected, but I'm still held up in by bed. I'll have to investigate when I can. And the training spear room has claimed a 2nd child. What an evil place we live in. 10th ObsidianOne of our dwarves has made the most splendid bed for me. Just some notes for the next person...
+ Show Spoiler +- I played a little more than a year (a few days over in truth) to get my tower/king's room (last screen shot) filled with water so it wouldn't lag for other people. - Horsemurdered doesn't seem to be self sufficient on food. Over my year here our food supplies dwindled quite a bit until I traded for a bunch of food water. Someone needs to sort all that out. - We need to update our professions. There's a ton of unskilled laborers who are crowding out the legendary workers even for tasks where just a few dwarves would suffice (like engraving, I disabled engraving on all but a few dwarfs). Armor and Weaponsmithing in particular are guilty of this. - Horsemurdered is too big now for people to do work and be haulers. Almost every dwarf I saw had their hauling labors enabled so most of them just went around hauling shit rather than doing useful work. I mostly did clean-up and tidying along with my small projects so I didn't change it, but it's something someone has to fix (also it's why we're running out of food). - We're all set for the king I think (road wise at least) and the tower I made (bottom right surface level) should do nicely for his quarters. It's all vacant considering the dwarf it was intended for is buried underneath it. - WTF soap? We have none and I can't make any the soap workshop had no options to make soap. - Man the place is a mess. Everything strewn about everywhere with all sorts of crazy stockpiles. I tried to setup the refuse stockpile (some for corpses/body parts outside, one inside for bones, teeth etc.), but that's about as far as I got. - We could use more military. Even with hammer lords and adamantine armor they seemed to struggle with the ambushes and at least 1-2 military dwarves suffered injury. Plus there's no partol or topside military duty so their reaction time leaves a lot to be desired. -If you want a good laugh look at all the corpses and skeletons in the training room lol. -As you might guess I was disappointed to find no masterwork engravings. Since my engraver died I didn't get to make any either . -Pasture the animals (or slaughter them)! We had 5-6 animals starve soon after I started because they weren't pastured. But uh... don't pasture untamed animals unless you want a repeat of my experience.
and uh sorry tnkted. Oddly/luckily enough no sieges. Probably for the best since we only have ~15 dwarves in the military and our siege engines look to be completely useless since they're on a Z-level above the entrance. So while they're pretty it was a whole lot of work for nothing by someone.

Great turn. This is so fun to read even for people who don't play DF, thanks for writing this up!
|
Nice to see that this is still running.
Question, what about those ballistae? Are they at the floor above the entrance? I thought they can only shoot at the same floor they are on.
|
Welp, I think i'm the first one in the history of horsemurdered to die twice. ;_;
Thanks for the save! Autosave every season will help a lot I think. The save is open for anyone to take, I don't think that we're even following the list since the last three or four people haven't bothered picking up their turns.
|
I am tempted to continue the saga, but I know my computer's completely incapable of running forts above 100 dwarves that span several caves worth of z-levels.
I'm thinknig we really should start experimenting with magma decorations as well as step up our candy farming a bit, though. If interest is lowering, we might as well get some proper Fun before it all dies off.

That's alright I get the honor of the shortest lifespan as my named dwarf didn't even make it 2 seasons.
@Forumite Yep. They're utterly and completely useless. Truth be told even if they were a Z level lower the goblins would be so close the siege operators would run away anyways.
If there's another succession game at some point we really should lower the pop cap to like 150 or so for performance. Also we should use the no clothing mods (or some other similar mod) so seiging enemies don't litter our fort with thousands of pieces of clothing.
|
We did have the popcap reduced to 80 at the start, as well as using the 31.18-client instead of the 31.25-one, but at some point, it got swapped and the prepared init was replaced by a standard one, probably by the application of a graphics pack (as they replace a lot of files in save and raw.).
|
|
Yeah, good idea.
Farewell, sweet Horsemurdered! We believed to know ye well, yet barely knew ye at all.
For V2 I suggest we make the area a little bit bigger, and lower the pop cap. Also we institute a rule that says that anybody who uses another version has to roll back or replay the year.
I'd be happy to create/update the thread again if somebody wants to create the package. We could also wait for the new version (zombies! cities! markets!) but I bet that will be buggy for a few months after release.
|
My suggestions for a new one would still have to be a no clothing mod to reduce clutter (by the time you get large goblin sieges you spend pretty much all year cleaning up the clothing and finish up right as the next siege arrives.
Maybe just bundle up a version of the game with the fort as well. That way you just download and run the included df.exe and we know everyone stays on the same version/graphics/settings

Someone should dig into the circus to give Horsemurdered a proper goodbye. Really. That, or have the military kill random dwarves to cause a loyalty cascade. Or release 10 captured badgers in the middle of the common area with all exits locked.

As an avid onlooker in the Horsemurdered saga I agree.
What brave warrior will step up to the plate to give Horsemurdered an epic final writeup?

There's a lot more interesting things than badgers locked in Horsemurder's cages.
Except Deer. I killed all the deer.

Anyhow, what do we want for the next succession game? What things I feel we need to improve on from our current standpoint, are
- Game smoothness. Things went pretty much without a hitch, which is good from a success-oriented gameplay, but chaos is far more entertaining and makes more interesting stories. - Queue speed. There were a lot of hiccups in game succession progression due to various people skipping turns or being slow in general. - Version confusion and core mod change. We started off with a lightly modded 31.18, and ended up with something completely different, most probably due to users using a preinstalled 31.25 instead of the OPs batch to play, as well as users installing graphic mods.
For what we can do with them;
Game smoothness - if we actually want the game to be less smooth, I suppose we could either encourage player to be more reckless or deliberately dangerous in their design descisions, such as open entrances and cave tunnels, parts of the fort above ground and direct connections to rivers for aquatic goodness, or "demand" for people to make some kind of monument in a vulnerable spot for their progression part.
Queue speed - I imagine we could dispose of the queue altogether, and allow the person who first posts after the newest story to grab the next succession period. To limit the same user from playing a lot though, we could add a limit of only one game turn per 5 successions per player, or something like that.
Version confusion and core mod change - if the userbase wants graphic addons, we should figure out one that we can agree on, then stick to that. We should also require for people to use the version the game is started with, and rollback any changes that has perverted this.
That's only changes based on this round's experiences, though. We could of course go off with an entirely different goal and packet of mods for our next fort. Maybe a frost fortress on a terrifying tundra? Maybe a perfect embark with iron, magma and flux, but using Fortess Defense? Maybe a fort relying entirely on non-metal materials, aside from what they can loot and trade?
Anything's possible.

Posting before this thread goes necro!
I agree with your points Plated. I wish I could play so I could kick things off but I'm still in Dwarf training..
I suggest a new thread to kick things off. Copy and paste the suggestions you made as rules and take the first turn! Maybe so that people aren't put off by ASCII use one of the graphics sets from the LNP?
Oh can I also be named as one of your starting Dwarfs? ^_^
Let the games begin...

EDIT: After reading http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Megaprojects this would be AWESOME..............
City of Ember Show those filthy humans that when dwarves build a secret underground refuge, they build to last! In other words, recreate Ember from the film "City of Ember" (yes, everyone is aware there is a book, that came first, an was part of a series), but do it right - none of these leaking pipes and crumbling buildings stuff, after only two and a half centuries underground! Mine out a massive cavern multiple z-layers high , and build a human-style city underneath it instead of carving out various chambers. You must seal it off. How long you wait to do this is up to you, but once it is sealed, you cannot unseal it for at least 200 years (if you decide to play that long). Ideally, use a utility to embark with a full set of dwarves (to represent the immigrating population) and seal the city off within one year of embarking. Build individual houses with their own dining rooms and bedrooms. Multiple dwarves can live in one house, but usually only a single family will live in one house. Build streets connecting all of the buildings, in the way that in the film, Ember didn't really have any space that wasn't either paved or built on until you got to the outskirts of the city. Have a "greenhouse" out on the outskirts for farming. You MUST have an underground river and use it for power. You MUST have magma and use it for power. Build City Hall, where the mayor has his office, with a nice fountain out front that actually works (probably involving water pressure, and as a testament to the fact that dwarves do it better, and their underground refuge isn't running desperately short of food, water, or power). No military, because there is simply no need for one, but have a fortress guard (to function as police, basically). After 200 or more years, unseal the city and colonize the surface. BONUS: Instead of building your houses/other structures out of blocks or rocks, plan it all out beforehand and simply don't dig out the tiles that you want to be the walls of buildings, and smooth it all down so it looks the same, but your buildings are actually made out of solid natural rock. BONUS: Actually cause some kind of catastrophe on the surface (flood it with magma or something) that makes it uninhabitable, to FORCE yourself to stay underground, but when you unseal the city after 200 years, the surface should have healed and be habitable again. So, don't do something permanent.
|
Oooo, actually yeah we could totally use the lowest cavern for that, and then just pump up magma. Good idea!
Plated.rawr, if you want to set up the file I'll host and maintain the thread again...! (we could use the exact same folder from the OP but with those settings you were talking about changed).
|
|
Sounds pretty ambitious, but rather than ambitious due to risk of failing, it's ambitious as 200 years is so long :S
Also I should apologise due to the version change, probs should have checked that out before I started my year.
I think we should forbid the use of traps, as they are clearly too good (cage traps anyone?). Restricting it to just military and any contraptions you make yourself rather than designated traps would make it a lot more fun.
|
|
Sorry, I'm away on holidays currently, and won't really be available before the end of august. I might get some time in the end of july, but I would start without me.
Edit. If tnkted still has the original modded version I made, you could use that and find a new site for a fort if those settings are agreeable. If not, I did write a comprehensive list of what I changed in the TL mod in a readme in that package, so adjusting what you'd prefer out of that should be doable with a little trial and error.
|
No cage traps is generally a good idea, not so much because they're too strong, but in succession game no one gets around to disposing of the creatures and they build up until there's 100s of caged creatures cluttering the fort up.

i agree with this. If a ton of traps are needed, i feel like stone traps will do more than enough for defense.
If at all possible, if a new one is rolling up, i'd like to toss my name into the ring to play

I sadly just don't have the time for any dwarf fortress glory, but I will eagerly await updates from the next game.
I think I like reading about it just as much as playing it xD

If we do do the lava city one, we don't have to do the 2000 year thing. Just try to get a self sustaining world set up and *maybe* pump magma to the surface indefinitely, like some sort of man made volcano.

I agree with your points Plated. I wish I could play so I could kick things off but I'm still in Dwarf training.. If you would play - wouldnt that be a better solution to this whole "game smoothness" problem? Maybe not in year 1/2 but after that? You will make mistakes / not play the perfect fortress and others will have to clean up your mess? Also maybe the old player poses a task to the next player? Maybe give 3 options and he has to try to complete one during his reign. Maybe use some kind of difficulty stuff. 1 hard, 1 medium, 1 easy and the next player can decide what he wants to do. Since I am a total noob myself dont mind me if the examples are too easy ^^ i.e. after year 2: "Hard: open a way to the caverns & secure it" / start a war with the Humans/Elves "Medium: kill of annoying dwarf X - write a fun story" i.e. kill 1 (all) miners with a cavein. "Easy: build a gladiator pit and sacrifice at least 3 prisoners" (building a moat for the first time killed 3 dwarves for me, because I didnt understand that whole floor/dig system. So might be a fun challenge for someone who thinks he's less experienced)
Or maybe people set up "traps" for their successor. Not stuff which completely destroys the fortress but small annoyances. Not stupid / boring stuff like deleting all profession profiles i.e. if you use a danger room - have one trap be armed with real weapons. So if the next guy uses the danger room - carnage! Or a mislabeled lever "Mainbridge" which actuals opens the cage to that one imprisoned enraged badger. And if your successor misses your traps - there's the successor of your successor Someone WILL trigger it eventually.
This sounds GREAT to me.
And yes, I still have the original stuff. I have a full time job at the moment though (I'm typing this in the 20 minutes I have between when I wake up -> when I join my carpool) so if someone wants to go first you can be my guest! The base file is here, but be aware that we still have the world generated as well as my save in there.
So! Who wants to go first? When you write up your turn, PM it to me and I'll make the OP and you can have the first post. STRIKE THE EARTH
(btw my idea: build a lever garden and attach random levers in the garden to wacky things, like a single pillar that's holding up the dining hall, or to your drawbridges, or to a screw pump system that shoots out a squirt of water every 150 steps. Don't label your levers).

I hate to revive this dying thread, but we still need somebody to start the save if we ever want to play this.

Ztoa: I'm not sure! I'd be willing to keep up to date another thread for it, but it might make sense to just continue with this one. I don't think anyone ever finished HMv1 so theoretically we could have two dueling fortresses...
