Yeah there are a variety of threats, and there are a lot of things that start off as big threats and eventually become small threats, but bigger threats move in to take their place. It's very satisfying when a couple of gnolls that terrified you earlier can now be destroyed more easily.

Just started playing yesterday.

Found two +5 protection rings and a +3 plate for my fighter by level 5 on my last run.

Made it to level 18 with 52 AC.

Dont let it go to your head. You may be ahead of the game right now, but shit happens all the time. Don't get too comfortable, especially with a melee character.

I got DESTROYED by Mennas (the angel) shortly after. He marked me in a new level of the dungeon and I had tons of hydras and dragons after me. My blink and TPs didn't help me.

most people crawling dont have a win yet, many havent even seen a rune.

i have 4 15 rune wins and still quite noobi when it comes to strange races or deeper mechanics

(and still 90% of time i die in plain stupid ways)

Die on Orc:4? Seems to get everyone, and gave me a TON of trouble. Only survived it by getting enough corpses from kiku to drop me from full to almost *** piety for abominations.

I should NOT play DCSS while ill. My delirious brain decided"Hey, you know what might be fun? The Abyss! I heard there are like, potions, and like, stuff, or something, and it's infinite, so you can get like, experience, or something, right? Maybe I'll even find the abbyssal rune! Yeah! Let's Go!" Luckily I survived long enough to find an exit out, but it was NOT worth it. I had to burn around six or seven heal wounds, because of all the non-drainable enemies, and almost died about seven billion times. Much of it was because of sub-par play, but still, derp.

Abyss should always be avoided unless you are going for extended end game and want to scum it for exp.

Orc 4 is relatively tame compared to other branch endings, but I can see how things could turn south if you run into a lot of sorcerers summoning out of depth monsters and high priests smiting you. I generally feel like if my char can handle the bottom of lair, it should be strong enough for the end of orc too.

Of course I usually always play with Beogh as my god, so, im usually like whatevs in the mines.

abyss can really ruin your day quickly. just recently lost a 2 rune char cause i think louise banished me. then a blizzard demon caught me flying and a lich casually walking by in the same moment.

also to me it seems new abyss gives you much less time to chill before spawning shit next to you.

Don't underestimate any monster in there, but orbs of fire, electric golems, and ancient liches can do huge damage in a round. Best to haste up before fighting them, and quaff resistance potion if needed.

Ancient liches are significantly more dangerous than regular liches. I strongly urge you to treat them as the terrifying creatures they are.

The challenge of most enemies in crawl is really proportional to how quickly you can kill them. For example, if you're a melee based character and you're worshipping the Shining One, then Ancient Liches will pretty much no longer be a problem for you as soon as you have your Holy Wrath weapon because you'll blow them away in a few hits before they get the chance to do anything dangerous. Or if you otherwise have just happened to find a powerful weapon, they'll also go down quick.

Pets also will help with anything you're unsure of.

And that is why I love necromancy :D. Sending 5 or 8 golden dragon simalacra in ahead tends to be kinda useful(except against fire giants), and even if they don't do damage they block enemy attacks long enough for me to see what the enemy is packing and plan accordingly or run away.
