Usually pretty anticlimactic. You can get unlucky though and hit Balrugs, Fiends or Pan Lords in an unfavorable spot. Once I ran into a pack of golden eyes on the ascension (not sure if summoned by pan lord?) but luckily had amulet to resist paralyzation.

It's always a good idea to grab 2-3 recharged wands of digging before ascending. It turns the ascension from easy to trivial.

I dont really want to play though, I still havnt even managed to get a rune after 3~ years of playing every few months.

I never got a rune after playing for months and months until I played my first tourney, where I got a rune and won my first game. Tourneys are magical times for me-- I find I do much better and focus better since winning matters more.

The tournaments are a really good mix of casual and competitive atmosphere - there's just enough rivalry to drive you to keep playing and try your best, but not so much that you feel intensely pressured to do well or that you're letting your team down if you do poorly. It can also be a pretty nice social way to play crawl, where you interact with your teammates a lot and learn from them; over on my team we have an irc channel where we all hang out and there is a ton of camaraderie.

Tournaments are extremely fun to play, to the point where it's the only time I play crawl anymore. Highly recommended for anyone, don't worry about being a noob

Been causually playing some HoFis of Beogh, and it has been a lot of fun. However, I've been wondering if there is a way to tell some orc to pick up specific gear, as I recently found an excellent artifact flail and have a flailing orc knight who will not pick it up.

I played one tournament game.

1304315 crate the Sensei (level 26, 196/196 HPs)
             Began as a High Elf Transmuter on Apr 18, 2014.
             Was a High Priest of Fedhas.
             Escaped with the Orb
             ... and 3 runes on Apr 19, 2014!
             
             The game lasted 07:37:23 (123811 turns).

drop the loot on the floor -> press ctrl+t to talk to your orcs -> then 'a' for them to pick up loot from all sources->then walk them over top the loot

sometimes it doesnt work, though, like, if the item is cursed or if they are already committed to a certain weapon class

Got my first rune today, from the Snake Pits. Subsequently died on the final floor of the Elven halls.

Still pleased with that milestone, gotta reach that orb eventually!

nice work! typically you should not do Elven halls so early though, it's scary as heck, especially the last floor.

playing Tengu summoner of ash. Cleared up to D:13, lair, mines, 1st floor of elven. Still not even one glove boots or helm. Cant even get bound in armour lol..

I'd probably not clear any more elf until you have cleared like, depths. elf is very dangerous relative to is placement in the dungeon

Ya i just went for a dip since i saw the portal at the end of mines. i was doing well until i got careless and spammed walk in LOS of a water nymph. Haha. Thats how i usually die. By tabbing too much or just mindlessly playing

oh god went inside fire cave.. dropped all my scrolls.. went toa corner to get some loot, walls collapsed preventong me from gettingy scrolls back.. fml! But then again this char had the most ridiculous start that i can probably afford to lose 3 blink, 4 tele, 5 fear, 3 fog among other scrolls

What I usually do with Volcanos is drop a few scrolls before passing through the portal. Once you're inside, don't drop anything you're not afraid to lose.
