DCSS is deep, yo. Check out this short story on how my first general earned his name from the one true god, Beogh:
Your orc warrior hits the cyclops skeleton with an elven long sword! Your orc warrior looks more experienced. "Your orc warrior mumbles, "When this is all over, I'm going to start a fungus farm." Your orc warrior hits Jospeh with an uncursed elven long sword. Joseph dies! Beogh accepts your collateral kill. Beogh blesses Wulfoc with healing. .

Most importantly, we found the shield of the gong twice, and of course wore it in both games.
that shit made me grin like a maniac and I don't even play this game anymore

Just won my first game!
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Dienosore/morgue-Dienosore-20130603-013211.txt
Found an early battleaxe of vamp and just ran with it. I acquired a weapon and got the wrath of trog, which I gave to one of my bros. It was so fun to cast haste on him and watch the little guy beserk and dismantle everything in sight.
My only regret is that I did not win this during tournament time :/
anyways, yay

Quick question. I thought I read somewhere that using scrolls increases some stat by a small amount. I can't find where I read it, but none of my games seem to support that theory? Almost all of my games so far I've been using all of the seemingly useless scrolls immediately: noise, uselessness, curse then uncurse afterwards, etc. to try an maximize that hidden stat...
Am I just wasting my turns?
|
There's a scroll of XP that boosts your skills. Yes it's very rare but it's by no means "hidden", you get what you see.
|
Zerbra, what you have read is very old information so you should forget it.
There is no scroll of experience. There is a potion of experience.
|
Ok, i think I found the original information about scrolls. In the FAQ section on the wiki.......
If you start off as a non spell caster roughly how many scrolls does it take to learn spellcasting?
A: Before the 0.9 revamp, it took (12 to 25) * (10 / int) * (2^(-apt/4)) scrolls, more if you didn't have a full enough xp pool. For the new system, turn off as many competing skills as you can, and try to read the scrolls shortly before you kill things.
^ Implies every scroll effects spellcasting before v0.9 and after. It's a stupid question whoever asked it, but should ignore this? I'm only asking because, well, I'm a noob and can take whatever extra xp I can get.
|
the xp pool doesnt exist you read old information and you should ignore it, like i already said

The wiki has a lot of wrong and outdated information. It's good for stuff like god overviews and species aptitudes, but for specific things you're better off with the knowledge bots.

yeah knowledge bots are where it's at. you can access them here:

just type in the spell, race, item, concept, monster, branch, or whatever and you will be given info

Believe it or not, I read most of the LearnDB straight-through, entry by entry. My mistakes are usually from either being:
1) reckless (everything up to a particular instance is cake, so don't take an actual new threat seriously) 2) worn down (navigating through menus, general pointing and clicking tedium) 3) Random Number Generator Crits against me
So I guess I'll ask what are some essential macros. I'd like to speed up my games. I had been interacting with the interface for the most part and just recently realized the life-saver 'G' for travel to a specific location.
|
There are a few things to play faster:
1) play more, you will be able to judge situations more quickly. This is the biggest timesaver. 2) travel_delay = -1, explore_delay = -1 3) Other rcfile edits to make it easier to read the things you need to read. I personally completely redid message colouring in my rcfile, you probably don't have to go that far. Recolouring items and some messages is definitely a good idea. 4) Console players have significantly lower duration winning games than tiles online. I'm not sure whether console is actually faster (probably it is if you play online) or if this is just a coincidence
If your goal is to win then my biggest advice is this: after every single death, figure out what tactical mistake you made that led to your death. There is very nearly always some tactical mistake. By this I mean things like positioning, which consumables you choose to use, etc. There are likely also strategic things (character-building) that you could improve upon but secretly character-building in crawl is pretty easy as long as you do things that make sense. It is tactics that are difficult.
My biggest single tactical advice tip is this: you should almost never take a step toward an enemy that is in LOS. You should usually let the enemies come to you instead. This is the single biggest thing I notice when I watch bad players online.
Losing a game to randomness basically does not happen in crawl, especially after d:4 or so.
The only macro I use is I macro "z" to "Z" since I hate z.

Yes webtiles is definitely very slow (at least compared to offline tiles). But I suspect that console players are more dedicated and just plain better as well.

It's also easier to instantly recognize stuff in console if you're used to it, at least I would imagine so. As a tiles player it definitely takes a little bit for me to register everything on the screen, but console is clean and simple.

My best and only game I even saw runes was with a MiBe. It was also my first game ever in Vault, Crypt, Tomb, Swamp, and Slime
+ Show Spoiler +.
Was trying to explore all the branches in a suicidal fashion rather win right away so ended up dying.
Branch order was: D1-Lair 8. Backtrack to D9, All Orc -> All Elf D11-D22, almost died turned around All Swamp-->All Spider-->All Slime D22-D27 V1-2 ---> All Crypt--->Tomb 1-2 very close to dying fled V2-5 Exploring side tunnel after clearing main room, Tried to flee with berserk to save haste wand charge, didn't work well
Berserkers are too easy and I don't want my first win to be with their kind. I'm trying to make my first win with DsCK, but Xom keeps giving me trouble and ultimately is the one who kills me. Xom's record: spawned a hostile smoke demon <200 turns in.
How many wins do you guys have worshiping Xom from start to finish?

0. Xom is an asshole, and I usually give up on trying to play CK after 30~ minutes. Unless you're a very, very good player, you will not win with Xom. He is by far the worst god in the game (worst as in, provides the worst help. If you're looking for a ridiculously unfair challenge though, Xom is your go-to god).
EDIT: If you want something more challenging than a berserker, try playing anything with a Demonspawn. They're difficult, but in my opinion also very fun to play, if you can get over their slow leveling.
Alternatively, if you want something that's chaotic and random, but not too chaotic and random, try playing a game with Nemelex. A very interesting god, who's also very powerful once you get the hang of how to play with him/her. Any race with a decent aptitude for evocations will work here, Hill Orcs make a good choice imo, but you can basically pick whichever race you want.
|
First win is the hardest to get... why wouldn't you want to play a strong class for it? Xom is very challenging and will make it much harder to get your first win. If pure melee is too boring try going Necromancy to supplement your melee. Mahkleb, Okawaru and maybe Kiku are excellent god choices for 3 runer. If you think MiBe was too easy try playing DD or HO Healer.
