For small races you probably want a demon weapon plus shield (or lajatang) since you can't use the really big weapons anyway. For nagas I can see an argument that shields are pretty decent because you are slow (worse positioning) plus constriction works like a nice additive damage brand and you also get large shields with less xp. For octopodes you probably want a shield too because you have awful AC. But for most races shields really aren't worth it if you are primarily killing things by attacking with a weapon. --- As far as skills go the big thing is just to figure out what skills actually give you the biggest benefit where you are, then train those skills only. Offensive skills tend to scale better than defensive ones so you want to level them first and pick up defensive skills later when they're cheaper. The only possible exception I can think of is that dodging on spriggans actually scales pretty well since they have huge dex, a big size bonus, and a nice apt for it. --- As far as the tourney goes I think I'm worn out of actually trying to win and streak so I'll be earning a lot fewer points for the rest of it. I have no chance at top 5 with how much I actually play anyway, so I'll enjoy the accomplishments I do have (none of the banners I haven't gotten sound interesting to me) and try to play enough to keep us in the top 5 teams. | ||

You get the bonus that taking it off won't cost you any god powers so taking it off isn't a huge deal (it will cost you god gifts but that's acceptable). I probably berserk less often than most people though; if you're going to berserk a lot then wear rage. | ||

fighting skill doesnt add dmg/accuracy to ranged physical weapons (bows, xbows, slings, ..) right? i know, in the dungeon crawl wiki ("only melee damage") and ingame help ("only hand to hand"), it is stated that it doesnt. but in the dcwiki articles about "WEAPON-damage" and "to hit", ranged weapons are not mentioned at all. and strangely in the "to hit" article, there are topics about "player to hit (melee)", "monster to hit (melee)" and "monster to hit (ranged)", but nothing about "player to hit (ranged)" this just left me a little doubtful. i'm trying to understand the mechanics because i'm playing around with archery a bit, you know.. to put myself in the shoes of those centaurs.. or their warriors.., i mean.. who doesnt love em, espacially the super early out of depth ones ![]() btw, to others, who have questions, i can only recommend the dungeon crawl wiki, its a great page, i've learned everything from scratch there. a knowledge bot is also very helpful while playing. edit: ok, to not spread bad advice, apparently some of the wiki information is inaccurate/outdated, so doublecheck your stuff with updated bots. | ||

Hmm, I think crate or beef ranted against the wiki at the beginning of this thread ("badwiki"), since a lot of stuff is out-of-date. :/ Question: I'm currently wearing a +4 chain mail (+inv rPois rF+) on my MiGl. I don't have another source of poison resist or rF (except for a god gift executioner's axe (flame, +Lev, rPois); unfortunately I use polearms), and have no rC (I have a +0 ice dragon armour though). The wiki is often inaccurate. The learndb is also actually inaccurate fairly often (don't trust numbers from either source if they're not obvious numbers!!!) but not as often. | ||

i mean i already need like 3-4 wand zaps to bring me to full, do i just hope for the best and that i always have a mp left to recharge or is there anything else? got a AWESOME weapon very early on ( d5) , a +11 , +11 morningstar with elec ,rElec,sInv and -tele which 1-3 shots evrything ive met so far(d11) so i dont wanna fuck it up that fast this time ~~ /accidently quaffed a potion of mutation ( really the 2nd most common potion with 5 at d11 is a potion of mutation? <.<) got - vision sharpens - icy blue scales grow -you feel a little pissed off think i got lucky? first 2 are good effects right? and 3rd is just a chance to go berserk which isnt all that bad and can be negated? was damn shocked but seems like it wasnt too bad | ||

Right now I'm aiming for 9 runes in under 50k turns (for the Oka 3 banner) on a SpEn of Lugonu. I have basically everything I need except for some sustainable means of teleportation though so I should be set (repel missiles would be nice also); I have 3 runes and max Lugonu piety at about 23k turns and I'm about to head for the abyssal rune and to get my dagger blessed. After that it's off to Pan for as many runes as I can grab, then I think I'll just go finish up. | ||
