Man, this run is turning out really nice. I think it could very possibly lead to my first win.
No runes yet, but I've cleared all of Orcs and all of Lair. Still haven't found any poison resist so I'm not sure where to go next. I'm down to D:14 of the regular dungeon. Here's what I'm working with:
Minotaur Death Knight Maces and Axes are both at 16 - Started axe, found a nice mace, then ran across my current weapon: +2/+4 Vampiric Executioner's Axe: Should I dump scrolls into this or keep looking for something better?
Stats: Str: 21, Int: 8, Dex: 13 Dodging: 16 - I haven't leveled armor at all. Is this smart? Do I need to be leveling armor? I'm just using leather right now.
Invocations is up at 11. This gives me Very Good success rate on Enslaved Soul. Do I need to push it any higher?
I had enslaved Nessos. Was a lot of fun seeing him blink around and arrow stuff to death, but he died, so now I'm using Aizul. Good choice? What enslaves should I be looking out for?
If I enslave a new soul does my old one just disappear?
My armor is so shit: +1 boots, +1 gloves, +1 leather, +0 cloak I don't even know wtf to be aiming for here. I just haven't gotten very lucky with loot.
Jewelry: Amulet of Rage: Picked this up early and it really got me through the early and mid game. Now I'm using it less and less. What should I be looking for?
For rings I have two +3 dexterity rings, +6 protection, and see invisible.
Like I said, very unlucky with loot so far.
Also no good wands. Just a few standard spell wands. No healing, blinking or teleportation.
What do you guys think?
Pointers moving forward?
Wish me luck!
Edit: Oh yea, this is where I can go next: D:14 is where I am Halls, Swamp, Hive, Slime Pits, Snake Pit
Really unsure of what to do since I have no poison resist
fml, lower dungeon levels are hard

Unless you turn into an Ogre and find a vampiric giant spiked club I'm not sure what weapon in the game is actually better than vampiric exec axe--and with a vamp GSC you have the problem that you can't butcher with your weapon, and it can only be created as a randart (GSCs are never otherwise generated with an ego). Vamp exec axe is pretty much the holy grail of crawl weapons.
Stats: Str: 21, Int: 8, Dex: 13 Dodging: 16 - I haven't leveled armor at all. Is this smart? Do I need to be leveling armor? I'm just using leather right now.
You probably want to level either armour or dodging, unless you like getting hit by everything and taking a lot of damage from said hits. If dodging then you should look for a robe or one of the light dragon armours; if armour then look for something with good AC. Armour turns out better overall if you're not going to be casting spells, so go look for plate armour or one of the heavy dragon armours.
Invocations is up at 11. This gives me Very Good success rate on Enslaved Soul. Do I need to push it any higher? Invo affects the damage (and thus healing) from Drain Life, as well as the amount of time you have to kill something before your Enslave Soul effect ends. Raising it more is not a bad idea, but if you want to leave it where it is that's not a bad idea either.

Anything with good spells but not Nikola and not Ilsuiw (their spells are very problematic at best). Uniques are generally good. If you enslave another enemy you lose the one you have.
My armor is so shit: +1 boots, +1 gloves, +1 leather, +0 cloak I don't even know wtf to be aiming for here. I just haven't gotten very lucky with loot. Anything with an ego. Use ^F and search for ego && <armour type here>, then try on all those. Non-ego stuff is fine too, you shouldn't expect to have anything with an ego except a robe or leather by D:14
Jewelry: Amulet of Rage: Picked this up early and it really got me through the early and mid game. Now I'm using it less and less. What should I be looking for?

+6 protection and an amulet of rage at D:14 and you say you've been unlucky? Damn, wish I could be that unlucky all the time. Those are both really good pieces of jewellery. As far as amulets go you're unlikely to find something more generally powerful than rage (arguably Faith since you worship Yred, but if I had rage I'd probably just stick to rage) but clarity and stasis are good for swaps, or you can wear gourmand or conservation and then swap to rage if you need it.
Edit: Oh yea, this is where I can go next: D:14 is where I am Halls, Swamp, Hive, Slime Pits, Snake Pit

fml, lower dungeon levels are hard The lower dungeon levels are probably hard because you have no defense since you have no dodging or armour skill. With a vamp exec axe and your jewellery you should be able to just cleave through to the Vaults entrance without any problem though.
You in fact have already found a better weapon and maybe better jewellery than my last winning character did in the entire game, and your armour is as good: http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/crate/morgue-crate-20111230-044455.txt
(though I stopped checking cloaks in Zot, so there was probably an ego cloak I bypassed, not that it mattered at that point)
edit: Oh I see, I wrote this before you struck out your post.

Man, reading this makes me sad.
I knew that I had the pieces for a winning run, but then I ran into Azrael and tried to enslave him. It failed like three times before all my undead minions were wiped out. I managed to kill him, but without my zombie death squad, the rest of the dungeon trash down there just killed me.
I ended up dying to a nine-headed-hydra.

Enslave soul will always fail if you try to use it on something that's already taken too much damage (I think the game gives you a message about this); it also fails more often if your Invo skill is low.
edit: Actually I'm not sure enslave soul can fail if you use it on an enemy with high enough remaining HP.

I'm thinking it didn't work because Azael is a demon?

Holy hell.
Mephitic+Ignite Poison.
It's incredible.

[13:05] <crate> !streak [13:05] <Sequell> crate has 2 consecutive wins (DrAK, DDEE), and can keep going!
DDEE is really easy. Shatter, crystal ball of energy, kill everything with your infinite mana (but don't over-use it since you don't naturally heal off the int drain). http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/crate/morgue-crate-20111231-200521.txt
Also Shatter with Makhleb is basically Borgnjor's that doesn't hurt your maxHP.

So I've been back in wizard mode lately.
I've tried spriggan, mummy and deep elf wizards, and while I recognize the strengths of spriggan speed and the awesomeness of having no hunger clock on the mummy, I just enjoy playing deep elf more.
Their aptitudes mean you can start using very powerful spells relatively early in the dungeon, and while they're fragile, being patient and smart about what you do seems like more than enough to keep you alive.
I've been consistently dying around D:15 with all my wizards, but I haven't had a death yet that I couldn't immediately attribute to me being stupid.
I'm really enjoying fire based magic.
Hands down my favorite spell in the game has become ignite poison. It insta-clears rooms full of big kobolds, most insects in the game and just about any green monster you can think of.
And for times when you're fighting non-poison monsters, you just have to cast mephitic first, and you've got a little mini-firestorm.
But reliably obtaining the spell is a little bit tricky. (erm, random?)
I don't know of any way to guarantee a book of morphology or a book of fire outside of following Sif, and, quite frankly, I don't think Sif is the best God for mages. Once you have the spells you want, Vehumet offers so much more.
Any tips on this?
I just lost a wizard on D14 or so, and by that time I had found 8 books, been gifted one, and had even found a shop that sells books, and none of them had my spell
Also, any general tips on playing wizards?
And lastly:
I've also been playing around with a stabby vampire enchanter. I haven't really gotten well into the mid-game with one yet, but they feel like they could be a lot of fun. Anyone have experience with this class?

Sif Muna's book acquirement will keep giving you books until you have every spell in the game, and the spells in her books will be weighted by your magic skills. So if you want to be guranteed a specific spell, Sif is the only choice you can go.
The Vehumet/Sif dilemma is mostly a stylistic choice, but I'll argue Sif is better anyway. Her channeling is superior to MP on kill because it's on demand. The whole MP on kill is sorta iffy because when you need it the most at 0 MP, you can't really kill anything because you're a puny wizard. Sif's selective amnesia makes it easier to switch out spells that are obsolete. Her miscast protection lets you cast really difficult spells slightly earlier without blowing yourself up.
Vehumet's wizardry and spell range is cool, but not gamebreaking in comparison IMO.
Note that Vehumet is apparently up for a redesign. Although nothing has been done as of yet, but this post may be obsolete before long, if you play Trunk that is.
As for vampires. Well I asked Henzell and he said, <beef42> ??vp[7] <Henzell> vp[7/8]: Vampires suck.
Not quite sure what to make of that. But well. When you drink blood, you become like a normal living character, able to regenerate or berserk, vulnerable to poison, cold and mutation. When you stay thirsty, you become like an undead. No regen, no rage or transformation, no spell hunger, etc. You're probably going to want to stay blooded for all of your early game as your defenses will not yet be high enough that you can go without regeneration. As you go deeper into the dungeons and your EV rises, you'll slowly be able to utilize your undead traits as you take less damage from popcorn monsters. The #1 vampire tip is probably not to forget about your bat form. It moves really fast and gives you a lot of free dex, EV. Note that it comes with a sizable STR penalty, and it can lead to a sudden death as you are crushed under the weight of your equipment immediately following a change in form.
|
MrBitter i've been playing VpEn of makhleb lately alot. Dying mostly to own stupidity and or randomness around XL 15 since christmas day. Really strong imo. Bat form awesome to run away with. Makhleb + bite makes you able to stay bloodless most of the time for great resists. Mainly using makhleb for the life gain so i havent put points to invocation. I usually lvl stabbing to 5 quick, then points in hexes/stabbing, some in charms to cast sure blade and possible future utility spells. Also lvling 1 more lvl of spellcasting early is cool so u can get confuse a bit earlier.
|
Don't play at 3 in the morning, you'll decide to melee Nikola without rElec and go from 101 HP to 0 in 2 turns.
|
Quick question on Rods.
I have a +9 rod of destruction.
What does the +9 pertain to? Is it for damage/hit like a mace/flail? Or does it have something to do with the charges?
|
Ignite poison is cool and all but honestly it's not that great of a spell. It's basically Ozocubu's Refrigeration except you need another spell to make it work and it's a much worse spell type (Ozo's is pure ice, Ignite Poison is fire/tmut or something). Fireball is better in general (and especially with Vehumet, since he makes it 4 MP instead of 5 and super easy to cast).
Vehumet is good if you just want to kill things with fire (or ice, or especially iron shots or crystal spears). The extra range and cheaper mana cost are a big deal and for a 3-rune win Firestorm or Ice Storm is probably all you really need--you don't have a big need for utility stuff like cblink even since you just kill everything with fire, and you can get your big spells online ridiculously early with Vehumet's wizardry. Vehumet is also better if you want to cast spells in heavy armour. Sif is obviously better for mummies and probably vampires or anyone using Lichform since her channeling ridiculously good.
Pluses/minuses on a rod tell you how quickly it recharges.

I always get cocky once I get past the first 5 levels and end up doing something stupid.
The other night I had my best character ever(not very good but good for me)
He died to a scroll of Immolation that backfired...
Also, Any tips on how to deal with being poisoned?

cure poison, health potions, get to a safe spot and press '5'

Thanks though.

Alternatively, worship Ely or Zin and use their abilities or be a Deep Dwarf so your damage shaving reduces poison to 0 (but be careful about red poison). Regeneration effects (the spell, ring, Trog's Hand) are also good ways to mitigate the damage.
I have a HOHe going right now and um, all I can say is that Ely is ridiculous. Not only do you get as many curing/heal wounds/restore abilities potions as you have piety for, but you get abilities to just instantly pacify almost anything. I can reliably pacify ancient liches and various Fiends in two uses now. You never have to fight ugly things or hydrae. Killer bee swarms become gobs of piety. And divine vigour apparently gives you +50% maxhp or something crazy (with high invo), since I have over 300 HP with it active.
Having three good rods and a rod of smiting helps too, admittedly.

I'm playing a stabby spriggan enchanter right now, about to go into Lair.
I found a regular old 0/0 dagger of distortion. (Pulled it off of Psyche)
Is this a keeper forever and ever? Should I start dumping my enchant weapon scrolls into it?
|
Don't wield distortion unless you know what you're doing. You cannot unwield it freely, and blinking/teleporting stuff that you hit is not always a good thing.
