Enter srulz, the ghoul monk of ?????
figured i'd go monk for the unarmed bonus at the start. donned the heaviest armor i could, and auto explored/tabbed the first four levels. had to flee from a ghost on level 4, so i dropped to lvl 5 still godless
dungeon five is clear. i realize i have like 6 rings, so i try them all on: no curses on any of them: ring of levitation, ring of invis, +5 ring of protect, +2+2 ring of slaying, ring of protection from magic, +2 int, and a ?. lucky! :D run is going good so far. still havn't had to wield a weapon or do anything but o-tab every level (but 4). ogres, gnolls, orcs, no problem.
nevermind,
turned a corner on sigmund who confused me instantly, and kept chaining it until i was dead
fuck
-----------------
try #2
srulz II, the ghoul monk of XEMELEX (decided before the run to just take the first altar I saw for)
so far so good. smooth sailing. still in my robes and weaponless
nevermind, gnolls
----------------
try #3
srulz II the ruffian, ghoul monk of MAKLEB (found temple on D:5 and took him)
starting to use meat to heal me during battle on free turns, haha.
Just picked up a +2 plate mail on D:6, should help things immensely. It has, D:10 no problem. nothing but o-tab.
fuck, i got really high and o-tab'd into elephant/slug/crocodile gaurding the lair --

Potion of curing breaks confusion. Just sayin' brah.

"You have found a portal to a trove of hidden treasure"
"The portal requires 10 potions of heal wounds, do you want to enter?"
I have 11.
Thoughts?
edit: holy hell, so worth it.
No monsters, just tons of amazing loot. All weapons. More amazing weapons than I have scrolls for. wtf do I do now?
edit2: Okay, now I really do need help.
+2/+7 Demon Trident of Venom vs. +2/+10 Spear of Botono (vamp, rP, rN, Stealth--)
halp!
edit3: I'm also wondering if I should keep Trog now. I took him for amazing weapon gifts, but I don't see it getting much better than this.

Spears suck.
20:26 <beef42> ??spear 20:26 <Henzell> spear[1/1]: Hand and a half polearm; can be thrown. Dam 7 Acc +4 Delay 11 20:27 <beef42> ??demon trident 20:27 <Henzell> demon trident[1/1]: A roses-sunshine-and-happy-bunnies weapon, molded by fire and brimstone. (Hand-and-a-half medium Polearm; Dam 13 Acc +1 Delay 13). Blessable to trishula.
Even with having 3 less pluses it still deals 3 more damage. Trog is still cool even for just granted powers. Only ditch him if you really want to learn magic imo.

As far as raising dodging/armour goes: It's hard to level them too much unless you're one of the large races. Some of the large races have this problem where leveling dodging sucks since they get penalized for being large, and leveling armour sucks since they have deformed body, but those races get innate AC and high HP to make up for it. In those specific cases just level armour or dodging some but not all the way.
Otherwise it's hard to go wrong going all the way to 27 on your defensive skill of choice, especially dodging for small races.

The knowledge bots tell me what the max/min delay on my weapon is, but where do I find the current delay in-game? Every two levels in a weapon skill decreases delay by one. Minimum delay is half the weapon's base delay. Note UC is specialcased so that mindelay is reached on level 27. Mindelay is either half the weapon's base delay (rounded down) or 7, whichever is faster. Or 5 for sabres. Note that a shield with insufficient shield skill will also raise your attack delay (by a pretty negligible amount), as will heavy armour for unarmed (again it's mostly ignorable).
(I think mindelay for UC is reached at 25, but UC gets +1 base damage per skill level so you should keep going to 27 anyway.)
You can edit your rcfile (by adding "show_game_turns = true") to show the current game turn and how long your last action took, which makes it reasonably easy to see to see when you've reached min delay. I recommend taking a look at MarvinPA's rcfile at http://crawl.develz.org/configs/trunk/MarvinPA.rc since his rcfile is amazing.
Personally I just copied the whole thing and then edited some parts of it to match what I wanted.

So I picked up Nemelex on my SpEn run right now (so far so good, XL 10 have a +5/+4 sabre of speed, got the Book of Party Tricks and learned Blink and Summon Butterflies along with the normal hexes). I read that Decks of Destruction is dangerous, so I decided I dont want to pray on weapons, but I can't find how to choose what to pray ie there is a pile of corpses, armor, and weapons but I can't figure out how to just pray the corpses and armor to Nemelex. Also, I already got a deck of wonders and a legendary deck of summoning, but i have 0 stars on piety. Should I just spam the two decks to get more piety or should I save them?
EDIT: Oh, also- should I start leveling up STR instead of INT? It's at STR 5/INT ~17/DEX ~17 right now. I also turned off fighting at 1, but I feel pretty squishy. Should I start leveling it up again? I'm still skilling everything else though (short blades 6, dodging 10, stealth 5, stabbing 9, spellcasting 8, hexes 7, envocations 1). I'm thinking about turning stabbing off right now, but since I have a sabre and not a dagger, should I keep it on? Also, is there any skills I should focus on?

^! will let you change what you sacrifice.
Decks of destruction are good, I don't know why people don't like them. Unless you torment yourself at a bad time (hint: triple draw avoids this) or do something dumb like fireball or electric ball yourself they're really strong. LOS-range crystal spear, summon six IOOD, ranged ball lightning, acid spit ... these are good effects. They are admittedly not as strong as summoning, but you get more decks total if you get destruction and summoning instead of just summoning.
Never draw blind from a deck of wonders (you will likely hit shuffle and wild magic at some point, and both of those can be effectively an instant game over), and wasting a legendary deck of summoning on just raising piety is a bad idea.
edit: Elliptic's SpEn guide:
My 0.9 SpEn guide: SKILLS: Approximate goals are as follows: 1) 8 Stabbing. 2) Invisibility at Excellent and 10 Dodging/Stealth. 3) 12 Stabbing, 15 Dodging/Stealth, 6 Fighting, and enough Short Blades for min delay. 4) 27 Stealth, 10 Fighting, and whatever spell skills you want. STATS: Raise Str to 8, then raise Int. SPELLS: From the starting book: EH, Confuse, Invisibility (and Sure Blade to train Charms or if you want better melee). When you find them: other generally good spells like Haste, Repel Missiles, Regeneration, Dispel Undead, Apportation, Blink, Control Teleport, Phase Shift, Controlled Blink, etc. GODS: Kiku is best, but Ash, Lugonu, Nemelex, and Makhleb are all great choices. WEAPONS: Any short blade will work for stabbing, but switch to a dagger when possible. For regular melee, early on look for elec and venom weapons. Later look for a quick blade and/or pain brand a weapon with Kiku. Distortion is nice also. Oh, and get a buckler.

Should I keep sacrificing stuff until I get enough piety to triple draw? Or should I just wait till I get another deck and start drawing from that?
|
Decided I wanted to try this out, went through the tutorial. At the fighting part, you had to choose which of 3 mobs to fight (they wanted you to pick the easiest) I saw the porcupine and it was described as weak lol, so I tried to kill it and got owned. That'd be pretty embarrassing.
Anyway, I was wondering if you guys think it would be a good idea to play mostly using keyboard, or is mouse fine? Noticed everything has a hotkey, but some seemed kinda random so i'd have to memorize them. xD

Blind drawing summoning is fine as long as you have an escape route (you might get a hostile shortsword or hammer as probably the worst that can happen), blind drawing destruction when torment, self-drain or self-poison won't get you killed is fine. Blind draw on escape is a bit risky because you might get damnation, but if you already know it's escape you're probably not in a great spot anyway if you're thinking about blind drawing so you might go for it anyway (but you should probably stack your escape decks). Don't touch wonders without triple draw. Most random decks you'll find in the dungeon are more-or-less safe to blind draw, but always check the card list and don't blind draw if it has shuffle or wild magic.
Keep sacrificing stuff to get more piety and more decks.

edit: @Yango (or anyone else who uses a terminal size larger than 80x24), since you're using a big terminal size you probably want to change the size of the viewport (unless you like just not using half of your terminal); you can do this with view_max_width and view_max_height options in your rcfile. Personally I think the default viewport size is fine so I just use 20pt size font so everything is nice and big.

So just making sure I have this correctly- I have a sabre of speed and I want to find how much skill points i need in short blades for min base delay: base delay is 12, every two levels in short blades decreases that by 1, min base delay for sabre is 5, speed brand doesn't matter(?). (12-5)*2 = 14. So i need 14 skill in short blades to get min base delay. How does speed play into this? Does it make it so that min base delay is 2?

Speed brand comes into effect after everything else. You are correct in saying it's 14 skill for min delay.

When Ash tells me I'm fully bound, does that mean I won't get any more benefit from cursing my remaining curse-free slots?
and I just found some pearl dragon armour. the rN+ doesn't help my vamp all that much but the AC looks nice. How much would it screw with my casting? I'd check for myself but that'd cost me some scrolls of curse/uncurse. nevermind, searching the Tavern told me not to bother

Holy crap, the initial Wizard spellbook looks so good. No clue what I should and shouldn't memorize.

It depends on how much spellcasting you want to do ... if it's "kill everything with fire" then don't wear PDA. If it's "buff myself so I can kill things with my weapon" then PDA is possibly the best armour in the game.
edit: It will hurt your stealth though, so maybe don't bother if you're playing stabby.

For the Wizard spellbook learn everything except Slow. You can learn the spells in pretty much any order you like.

I really have a good feeling about this SpEn run haha. Couple more things though: Are there any wands that I need to carry? I'm holding a wand of hasting right now and leaving everything else behind cause I'm trying to cut down on weight. I have a scroll of acquirement, but I'm not sure what to use it on. I have a +6/+5 sabre of speed, +1 wizard hat, +2 robe of positive energy, +0 buckler of Xaoles Koba (Dex+4), +1 cloak, ring of resistance, ring of protection from fire, amulet "Haghoryu" (rMut, Dex+1, Dam+1). I'm thinking armor for maybe a better robe/cloak/hat? Also, for some reason, I can't enchant my sabre anymore with either enchant weapon scrolls. Shouldn't I be able to go all the way up to +9/+9? Spellcasting worth leveling up? I leveled it all the way up to 14 to cut my hunger costs, but Invisibility still costs a honeycomb. Everything else is at none.

I'm holding a wand of hasting right now and leaving everything else behind cause I'm trying to cut down on weight. Since you worship Nemelex, you can treat the big attack wands (cold/fire/draining) as about the same level as an ornate deck of destruction--but with a guarantee that you're getting what you expect. Or you could use decks instead, up to you. I'd carry at least one of the big attack wands around, but don't bother with the weak ones. Digging is nice, disintegration is nice so you can kill statues. Heal wounds, teleportation, and hasting are mandatory if you have them. The resistible wands are not worth bothering with in most cases, though I suppose paralysis might be able to get you some stabs.

Either get staff if your Evocations skill is higher than any of your magic skills (this gives a good chance of getting you a rod, and with high evo the damage rods deal serious damage), or get wand and hope for heal wounds or teleport (which is probably about a 50% chance). Your armour is pretty good, your weapon is extremely good, and jewellery acquirement is bad so wand/staff are really the only reasonable options.
Also, for some reason, I can't enchant my sabre anymore with either enchant weapon scrolls. Shouldn't I be able to go all the way up to +9/+9? Scrolls of enchant weapon can fail at enchantment past +4/+4. You can--and should, since you're almost certain to not get something better--continue to try to enchant your sabre.
Spellcasting worth leveling up? I leveled it all the way up to 14 to cut my hunger costs, but Invisibility still costs a honeycomb. Everything else is at none. Invisibility probably costs you more nutrition from the increased hunger rate while invisible and from waiting out the contamination/MP regen than it does from the up-front hunger cost.
If you don't need more spell slots or more MP don't raise it any more.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I having a lot of problems of carrying to much weight with me. How should I manage it? I do carry a lot of potions and scrolls so that I have at least one of each, and along with one or two decks (summoning, escape usually) I get overloaded easily; should I just leave a lot of it in my stash and carry the wands instead? Also, since I'm not having trouble yet, should I hold off using these wands? If I already memorized Dig, is it helpful to memorize Passwall as well?
