The problem with Jiyva is that in order to gain piety with her, you must let slimes blob around all over your levels munching up all the loot. The slimes are not friendly, but neutral so you do not gain experience for their kills.
While the slimes will probably roflpwn everything in the dungeon, you will not gain experience or loot. The slimes are viciously effective.
She'll also let you remove bad mutations and gift you unique Jiyva ones. She's intended for lategame characters with a bad mutation set and no further need for loot or xp. My advice is to convert to her, just to experience the madness. You'll probably not win that character, but by the general winrate your chances were not very good anyway.
|
The thing is, I would rather go Xom rather than Jivya if I want awesome mutations. Which is a shame, since she sounds sooo interesting! But if she suddenly decides she wants to shuffle your stats, you're as good as dead.
(experience based on old versions though, don't know if this had changed)
And for general bad mutations removal? Better go Zin.

Anyone know how many Ghosts you can meet on a level? (I wasn't randomly idling there for many turns to generate random strong monsters) Just met 3 Summoner Ghosts and a Venom Mage on the same level... 2 in the same room?!
|
Got a pretty nice run going now; lvl 17 HoPr with over 65k turns and about 5 hours clocked. Just picked up my first rune ever! Serpentine rune! wohoooo. I decided not to convert to Jivya because I actually want to win I'd definitely like to try her out sometime though.
Got a nice crew following me too,
Borgoth was actually the very first brother I converted. He started out as a meek orc, then was blessed with priesthood by the all knowing Beogh. I then took him and a group of 5 others down into the Lair. After clearing it to lvl 7, he was finally upgraded into a High Priest. Four hours later and many more levels later, he is still going strong.
I acquired both an Excecutioners Axe of Chopping and Crystal Plate Mail. Also hit a treasure trove full of unique rings and amulets. Unfortunately I didnt have the scrolls to ident them all.
I feel the end is within reach as long as I keep playing smart and don't let me team die. Hopefully I didnt just jynx myself with this post haha.

fuck. Deep elf annihilated on Elf 5. I don't even know what happened. I think my Orc General fell down a shaft, one of my High Priests mysteriously vanished, and I left Borgoth outside Elves so he wouldn't get gimped by some random spell blast. Still had a solid crew with me, though... 5 wizards, 5 knights, a priest. Wasn't enough, I suppose. I should have brought everyone with me... I didn't think elf was going to be that hard ((((((((((((((((((((
oh well, least I am making progress! now I know what a rune looks like :D
anyone have any tips on progression with a HOPr? I usually go Lair/Mines/Snake/Swamp/ ??????. I'm so close to winning, I can feel it!

If you didn't die on that level then all those ghosts are gone. If you did, then there are now five ghosts on that level (actually I don't know if the game always saves a ghost when you die, but if it did there are now five).

this game is amazing, died a billion times but finally getting somewhere with a troll berserker. however im stuck in a labyrinth and am in desperate need of TL help! + Show Spoiler + there is no passage unexplored and i can't find the minotaur, i know the labyrinth is supposed to shift walls etc. but the only thing i can do is run back and forward through a few corridors seeing the same passages over and over, do i need to look for secret doors, any other tips? thanks
update: found the room + Show Spoiler +not sure if it was a bug or just me being dumb but after the walls shifted i found a way out, now to see if i can beat the minotaur!
update: dead best run so far at least, now to start over again!
|
I think labs are still simply-connected so you should be able to just follow one wall until you see the minotaur vault.
If you really just want to start the lab over you can use teleportation, which will put you far away from the exit but if you're frustrated with where you are it's not a bad idea.

Ok, I was just prompted "Add 6780gp Ziggurat to shopping list?" and have no idea what to do. So is it worth going down there? I'm basically still around where I was at when I posted my char dump.

afaik Ziggurats are for extended endgame, so though you could add it to your shopping list (it doesn't do anything immediately), you probably aren't gonna enter it. (Plus it's damn expensive, so it'll be a while before you can enter it anyway.)

If you're a Hill Orc Priest, as you gain piety, you gain the ability to convert orc followers (or sometimes even be gifted with a bunch!). Other gods give you temporary summons (Makhleb, Nemelex, TSO(?)), and some necromancy spells (or Yred abilities) give you more permanent summons (though most undead can't follow you between floors; Abominations can.)

T.T Elf: 5 is supposed to be much harder than the rest of Elf (as bottom levels always are). You might want to do Vault: 1-7 before Elf (or before Elf: 5 at least).

Died on D:10, my longest run so far.
Tried to Tele out from a bad crowd, but forgot that my Mace had -Tele. YASD.
Slowly figuring things out.

Zigs are in general for the challenge, though there are a few circumstances where you might actually have a reason to want to go in and clear a few floors for loot (got horribly mutated in Pan or something, since Zigs have a lot of cure mut potions). If you have Death's Door and Controlled Blink you can very nearly always escape from a floor ... though you might be doing so at about 10 hp and with your Death's Door about to end.

When in doubt, here's how you should progress:
If there is more Dungeon, do more Dungeon. If you run out of Dungeon, do more non-branch-end levels. If you run out of those, go get three runes and win.
Elf:5 in particular is way harder than the rest of the branch, since most of the high-tier elves are exceedingly rare or impossible to spawn outside of it, and they're quite common in the Elf:5 vault. They have stuff ranging from banishment to lightning bolts to crystal spears (each of which can do over 100 damage) to summoning greater demons. There are also blademasters which move faster than you and attack twice per round for a lot of damage, and master archers which are like yaktaur captains that shoot twice.
|
Should I do Swamp: 5 or get my ring of levitation and do Shoals for a bit? Near the vault(?) where the rune is located in Swamp, it's all x'd out. Is there anything I should be worried about (like for example, when there are statues, they also have xs all over) Also, should I switch my ring of levitation with rPoison or rF+ for Shoals? I know my two runes should be from swamp+shoals. The third one I should aim for is from vaults?
|
Do more dungeon if you can, there's not really much reason to go clearing the branch ends until you need the runes. Swamp/shoals don't have much loot, just some xp.
Shoals should be really easy if you have invisibility since nothing there except some uniques has see invisible (Ilsuiw also does not have SInv). Just go invisible, stab everything, leave with the rune. Levitation is convenient but not necessary.
Swamp has a few different endings. One has simulacra (hydra simulacra can deal up to about 50 damage per head if you have no rC, so be careful!) and ice dragons and freezing clouds. One has undead, death drakes, and miasma. Two have hydrae, swamp dragons, and maybe the Lernaean Hydra.
Vault is probably the third-easiest rune, yes. V:8 should not be done until you are ready to go to Zot: when you go down the stairs you will be surrounded by about 20 vault guards, and the rest of the level has a lot of enemies including yaktaur packs, stone giants, shadow, storm, and golden dragons (and quicksilver if the RNG hates you), tentacled monstrosities, titans, and shapeshifters.

probably an Oklob plant? (it should show what you're travel-excluding when you use X? I don't really use them often enough D: )

I can't see where the X is in the Swamp:5, so I think its just to show where the vault where the rune is or something. On a related note, I just went down the stairs in Shoals 4. I have wands of fireball, cold, disintegration. Do any of those do well against the plant? If I go back up, nothing bad should happen?

What's with everyone trying to do elf:5? It's one of the most annoying branches of the midgame and doesn't even have a rune.

Is there a semi-reliable way to guess at the identity of rings/properties of armor/weapons without using scrolls? I just got super lucky on this last run because I had like 5 un-IDed rings, and when I happened upon a nest of killer bees, one of the two I was wearing just happened to be poison resistance (which I didn't find out till a while later after I died in Lair).
I also need to change my RCfile so the game prompts me when i receive a god gift. I have a feeling this will get annoying on certain gods, but I'm also pretty sure that I accidentally skipped a god gift on this KoBe without realizing it at some point. Going into Lair with a +0 Sabre didn't end well.
EDIT: Actually, are there any rough rules to go by when comparing weapons across types? E.g. a +0 Sabre vs a +2,+2 Dagger.

When it happens, I will definitely be writing a lengthy blog post. ^^ I'll be so happy to finally have achieved victory that I will probably immediately roll a fat celebratory joint and call all my friends up and be like yo come over and smoke dis joint cuz. I just dominated the fuck out of this bitch ass game. It was so easy lemon squeezy fo sheezy my dudes. Looks like humankind wins again fucking robotic ass shufflebot dungeon generator sequensizer. Then we'll smoke dat joint an probably roll like 2 or 3 more before its all said and done, ya know? Then I'll probably roll to the pawn shop and sell some shit cause I ain't got no cash right now and the baby moms' gettin hungry and all that mess. But it's all good cuz this dude hooked your man up with some dank ass jammin out bob marley style regee shit guitars. Easily flippable dig? Legal too, so you ain't gotta worry about none of that bull shyte.
But really though, blog post.

: if you.god() == <gods you want a notification of here> then force_more_message = gift runrest_stop_message = gift : end
This will stop autoexplore/travel if you happen to receive a gift while traveling (not sure if that can happen, so you can probably leave the second line out) and also force a --more-- prompt.
You probably shouldn't just use "gift" as the string to match, but I'm not sure what the actual god gift wording is, so replace "gift" with the actual god gift wording.
For Nemelex you can make it easier and just put decks on autopickup:
: if you.god() == "Nemelex Xobeh" then autopickup_exceptions = <deck : end
---
As far as identification goes, unless your ring IDs when you put it on there's not much you can do beyond just using a scroll on it. Scrolls are pretty plentiful so you should likely have enough. You can buy junk items in shops to ID them for ~40 gold or so, which is often worthwhile.
For weapon comparison, using the biggest weapon you can that has an attack delay of 1.0 or less at your current weapon skill is a pretty good guideline. Attack delays larger than that lead to monsters getting double hits on you which is very unpredictable and somewhat dangerous, so probably it's best to avoid that.
