Getting abyssed is meant as a punishment, and plays as one too. Exit portals are generated randomly. It may take 10 or 10000 turns to find one (each square has a 1/7500 chance of being the exit). In the meantime, your best shot is to run and to keep running. If you stay and fight you'll just generate more monsters while you generate less abyss (thus less chance of the exit). Using scroll of teleportation will dump you in a freshly generated section of the abyss, and is therefore a good way to get rid of excess monsters.

In reality, the best way to deal with it is not getting abyssed in the first place. There are not a lot of uniques and monsters that can abyss you, and knowing them all will go a far way. They are, according to the learnDB: draconian shifters, deep elf demonologists/sorcerers, Louise and SOME (ancient) liches, wizards, deep elf magi, ogre-magi, Erolcha, and pan lords.

Thanks for the speedy info, beef.

For everyone else's reference, the dude had on a bright teal suit that had a spiked, elongated helm and shoulderpads. He looked like a bitch. Run away from him at all costs.

I've been trying to get an Arcane Marksman off the ground for days now... it's not going so well. AFAIK there isn't a race that gets bonuses to both bows and hexes, so I'm running Human. I inevitably get killed when some monster resists my spells 4 times in a row, then run out of ammo, and am forced to melee with an untrained short blade.
it's my first day

If you have swiftness + flight you stand a good chance of surviving the abyss since you can outrun everything dangerous and fly over the lava + water. Of course, in that case Abyss is still a punishment, but mostly because it's so mind-numbingly boring.

If you're a Naga just don't get Abyssed unless you worship Lugonu, lol.

I'm going to get obvious here and suggest a slinging spriggan or kobold (honourable mention to halflings for rocking at slings but sucking at everything else). I have a hard-on for slings because they shoot fast and because you can use common rocks in a pinch. The racial choice is between slightly better fighting and carnivorous vs. being a fast and magical vegetarian. In both cases I would probably go for Okawaru and hope for good gifts. Fedhas should be mentioned too for his synergy with ranged and for being awesome.

I tried SpAM (heh) and it's kinda like SpEn except instead of stabbing you train slings, and you don't get invisibility in the starting book.

?? Halflings are basically Kobolds with slightly better aptitudes and no carnivore imo. I think the shield and charms apts that halflings get outweigh what Kobolds have (at least if your main damage is from weapons--Kobolds are better at outright killing stuff with spells), and any advantage Ko gets from the better fighting apt is mostly/entirely offset by Ha having higher base HP.

For the AM, the main problem with the hafling is its shite spellcasting aptitudes, and its lack of perks like spriggans and kobolds have. We're not going for a pure slinger here, we're going for some kinda SpEn bastard with slings. I mean if we wanted to be a pure slinger, why not just pick HaHu and skip magic entirely?

You don't need a lot of spellcasting levels unless you're going pure magic, honestly.

Here's what my HaHu had with 11 spellcasting levels:

a - Deflect Missiles Air/Chrm #######... Excellent 6 Honeycomb
b - Swiftness Air/Chrm #######... Excellent 2 None
c - Haste Chrm #######.. Excellent 6 Honeycomb
d - Phase Shift Tloc #######... Excellent 5 Honeycomb
e - See Invisible Chrm #######... Excellent 4 Strawberry
f - Control Teleport Chrm/Tloc #######... Excellent 4 Strawberry
g - Regeneration Chrm/Necr ######.... Excellent 3 None
h - Fire Brand Fire/Chrm ######.... Excellent 2 None
i - Apportation Tloc #######... Excellent 1 None
j - Freezing Aura Ice/Chrm ######.... Excellent 2 None
k - Shroud of Golubria Chrm/Tloc #######... Excellent 2 None
l - Flight Air/Chrm #######... Excellent 3 None
m - Blink Tloc N/A Excellent 2 None
n - Ozocubu's Armour Ice/Chrm ######.... Excellent 3 None
o - Sure Blade Hex/Chrm ######.... Excellent 2 None
p - Summon Butterflies Summ ####..... Excellent 1 None

Ko Charms aptitude is awful so either you sink a lot of extra experience into it or you don't cast Haste. You need more than 11 Charms to make Haste reliable. Ko has worse Tloc aptitude also, which means more experience to cast Phase Shift or cblink (I didn't find cblink in the above game). This adds up to significantly more extra experience spent than what Halflings spend on leveling spellcasting.

edit: I should note that while this is a HaHu I only used slings in the early game (rod of smiting + decks + wands later), so this is not necessarily indicative of what an AM-type would have.

edit2: In case my point isn't clear I'm saying that Ha has better spellcasting aptitudes overall than Ko for an AM-type since they get pluses in the two most important spell schools, one of which Ko has a -2 aptitude in. This in addition to better shield and sling apt and better HP (though worse fighting, which makes the HP kind of a wash).

edit: Oh, wow, I just checked out the AM starting book ... I guess at least it has Corona ... seems a pretty crappy book to me, I'd rather start as a Hu or Wr and then just pick up spells from actually good books later.

For some reason, I got telportitis, disease resistance and str -1 without eating anything that would mutate me (at least I don't think). Is there any enemy that would mutate you pre-dungeon 8?

Most likely it was from someone zapping a wand at you. Polymorph other will mutate you.

Oh yep that was it. Cause I picked up a wand of polymorph other that was zapped twice. Now I have to find cure mutation before this teleportitis kills me lol.

Also, for anyone who hasn't heard: constriction plus distortion weapons is hilarious. If you are constricted by/constricting something and then disto-tele that enemy, you'll warp along with it. This is bad for actually winning the game, but it's awesome for having fun. Naga Abyssal Knight is the best way to experience this, though anyone with a distortion weapon can do snake for some laughs.

Plus Lugonu is awesome anyway; just banish anything that's too annoying or difficult to kill until you start seeing stuff with really high MR, and Corruption is great.

Just got my first win in DCSS and any roguelike. I won with a Ghoul Fighter unarmed right after dying with my first two runes on a Dwarf Fighter. It was really easy once I got going. I use Hero most of the time and used Finesse maybe 2 successful times throughout the game. I'm pretty sure I could've gone farther but I wanted to end the game and leave it for a tougher/more fun char. There was only 2 moments in the game I was almost going to die and that was Tomb with the sphinxes so I left and Zot:5 with 3 Orbs of Fire in sight but once I remembered I had resist potions even that was fairly easy. Overall though Ghoul provided me and easy passage with resist mutation, torment, life protection 3, food etc. Holy Wrath was not a big deal at all.

Congrats! Tomb is arguably the scariest place in the whole game, so yeah I hope you didn't try it on your first win! Ghouls are real lategame powerhouses, since unarmed is the best weapon in the game at max skill and ghouls get claws so they hurt even more, plus as you say they have some nice innate resists and such from being undead.

---

Got my tenth win on CAO just now as a DrAK (so now I'm part of goodplayers, yay). Distortion weapons are not good for actually winning, but they're fun (I used a battleaxe of distortion and won anyway). Lugonu seems really strong actually ... in the early game you have banishment which works on everything you'll see; in the midgame you get Corruption which is outrageously powerful (it's basically like summoning 30 or so minor servants with Makhleb at once, though you can only use it once per floor and you can't swap positions with them); and then once you find an Abyss portal you can pretty much just scum the Abyss indefinitely if you want, since you're almost guaranteed to kill enough things each trip to be able to afford to Lugonu-gate yourself out. Plus something pretty close to life-saving if you have at least ***** piety, though at huge cost.

The Abyss is so much less stressful when you know you can just instantly leave without so much as taking adjacent enemies with you too, and the rune is more common to boot.

Man, summon demon is such a fun, double edged spell.

Sometimes you get some badass companions to help you out of a sticky situation, and others, you summon 4 unfriendly sun demons at once.

I had to run into the labryinth to escape a hydra.

I've never been here before and I'm not sure what to do.

Troll Fighter: Unarmed
God: Xom

rofl, I think I'm screwed.

edit: lol, one-shot by the minotaur

baha

yeah probably would have been better to fight the hydra

Ive only been to the labryinth once. It was on my best run, so my guy was pretty beefy. I had no trouble hacking the minotaur apart.

Minotaur is often easier to kill than a hydra, especially for a troll. Hydras do more damage if they have a lot of heads (unless you have enough AC) and they have the same amount of health.

Working on a Minotaur Death Knight and just came across the +7/+7 Singing Sword.

Wondering if its worth training long blades for?

I'm already at 13 maces with a +3/+0 Dwarven Great Mace of Draining.

I'm thinking no?
