In reality, the best way to deal with it is not getting abyssed in the first place. There are not a lot of uniques and monsters that can abyss you, and knowing them all will go a far way. They are, according to the learnDB: draconian shifters, deep elf demonologists/sorcerers, Louise and SOME (ancient) liches, wizards, deep elf magi, ogre-magi, Erolcha, and pan lords.

For everyone else's reference, the dude had on a bright teal suit that had a spiked, elongated helm and shoulderpads. He looked like a bitch. Run away from him at all costs. | ||

If you're a Naga just don't get Abyssed unless you worship Lugonu, lol. | ||

AFAIK there isn't a race that gets bonuses to both bows and hexes, so I'm running Human. I inevitably get killed when some monster resists my spells 4 times in a row, then run out of ammo, and am forced to melee with an untrained short blade. I'm going to get obvious here and suggest a slinging spriggan or kobold (honourable mention to halflings for rocking at slings but sucking at everything else). I have a hard-on for slings because they shoot fast and because you can use common rocks in a pinch. The racial choice is between slightly better fighting and carnivorous vs. being a fast and magical vegetarian. In both cases I would probably go for Okawaru and hope for good gifts. Fedhas should be mentioned too for his synergy with ranged and for being awesome. I tried SpAM (heh) and it's kinda like SpEn except instead of stabbing you train slings, and you don't get invisibility in the starting book. | ||

Here's what my HaHu had with 11 spellcasting levels: a - Deflect Missiles Air/Chrm #######... Excellent 6 Honeycomb Ko Charms aptitude is awful so either you sink a lot of extra experience into it or you don't cast Haste. You need more than 11 Charms to make Haste reliable. Ko has worse Tloc aptitude also, which means more experience to cast Phase Shift or cblink (I didn't find cblink in the above game). This adds up to significantly more extra experience spent than what Halflings spend on leveling spellcasting. edit: I should note that while this is a HaHu I only used slings in the early game (rod of smiting + decks + wands later), so this is not necessarily indicative of what an AM-type would have. edit2: In case my point isn't clear I'm saying that Ha has better spellcasting aptitudes overall than Ko for an AM-type since they get pluses in the two most important spell schools, one of which Ko has a -2 aptitude in. This in addition to better shield and sling apt and better HP (though worse fighting, which makes the HP kind of a wash). edit: Oh, wow, I just checked out the AM starting book ... I guess at least it has Corona ... seems a pretty crappy book to me, I'd rather start as a Hu or Wr and then just pick up spells from actually good books later. | ||

Is there any enemy that would mutate you pre-dungeon 8? Most likely it was from someone zapping a wand at you. Polymorph other will mutate you. | ||

Plus Lugonu is awesome anyway; just banish anything that's too annoying or difficult to kill until you start seeing stuff with really high MR, and Corruption is great. | ||

--- Got my tenth win on CAO just now as a DrAK (so now I'm part of goodplayers, yay). Distortion weapons are not good for actually winning, but they're fun (I used a battleaxe of distortion and won anyway). Lugonu seems really strong actually ... in the early game you have banishment which works on everything you'll see; in the midgame you get Corruption which is outrageously powerful (it's basically like summoning 30 or so minor servants with Makhleb at once, though you can only use it once per floor and you can't swap positions with them); and then once you find an Abyss portal you can pretty much just scum the Abyss indefinitely if you want, since you're almost guaranteed to kill enough things each trip to be able to afford to Lugonu-gate yourself out. Plus something pretty close to life-saving if you have at least ***** piety, though at huge cost. The Abyss is so much less stressful when you know you can just instantly leave without so much as taking adjacent enemies with you too, and the rune is more common to boot. | ||

Sometimes you get some badass companions to help you out of a sticky situation, and others, you summon 4 unfriendly sun demons at once. T.T | ||

Wondering if its worth training long blades for? I'm already at 13 maces with a +3/+0 Dwarven Great Mace of Draining. I'm thinking no? | ||
