Lol, I guess I was wrong about this

Not surprising, as they knew this second installment was going to be much more mainstream.
Full t&a from Triss in the first ten minutes! A little surprised the US version didn't censor that.
Pretty happy with the game so far, though my system is a bit low for it.

Only 5? It crashed like every 30 minutes for me. I probably crashed 50 times before I beat the game. It was really, really bad. I never had any other issues though, but I probably lost 10-15 hours of progress my first playthrough.
I haven't had a single crash in the Witcher 2 yet. I've probably put in 5 hours, which probably matches the longest I have gone without a crash in the Witcher :>

Quick questions
1. Is there crossfire support? 2. How does this game run on a 5850? 3. Should I buy steam or retail version? 4. Is the gameplay linear like FF13 or more rather like DA:O ?
Thanks

better compare it to Gothic 2 and you should be cool if you liked that game. And when you want to support the developers the most you should buy from gog.com cause they basically own that shop if you have to pick between steam and retail I'd say go for the retail version it costs the same but has some nice additions.

Alright, I've played the new game about 4 to 5 hours now. First couple of impressions:
The beginning was somewhat confusing. The tutorials at the right side were buggy and didn't show up sometimes, or when they did, sometimes they immediately disappeared again. I ran around the first 2 hours or so not knowing how to block or how to use bombs, simply because those tutorials never showed up for me for whatever reason. It was the first two hours because I quit my first gaming session then, and before I began the second one I looked up the controls in the applications configuration tool. Also only after that I noticed that you have a "tutorials" section in your journal.
- The combat takes getting used to, which makes it the same way as it was in first game. But once you get "into the zone" with the combat controls, it's pretty awesome. As many have pointed out it plays a lot like Arkham Asylum in that regard, which is a very good thing. Overall you can do a ton of stuff to take opponents down, and I figure it can only get better once I unlock the other tech trees (when does that start by the way? I'm kinda afraid that I somehow missed something, lol).
- The UI also takes getting used to. For example, to know if Geralt is currently using the Silver sword or the steel sword, you have to really look at Geralts back to see which one of the two aren't in their holders (the right one is the silver sword). Alternatively, you can hit an opponent and watch the combat log to the bottom right to see if you're only doing minimal damage. The Witcher 1's UI was more clearly defined in that regard, having your currently selected weapon shown to the left. But once you get used to it in TW2, it feels very natural and the UI is way less cluttered.
- Dice poker is even more rigged in this game than it was in The Witcher one. I'm standing something like 1 to 8 against 3 NPCs right now, lol. Don't even think I'm stupid, I got them mad poker skillz! Was a profitable 1/2NL HU grinder for a decent time, so dice ezpz! You'd think so, but no when your opponent gets a full house almost every throw!
- Fist fights look good, but are boring. You wait until a button shows up, and press it. Well, they were boring/buggy in the Witcher 1 as well, and they're a side quest to the whole game, so it's not really a negative point and just my impression from the mini game. The same thing goes for arm wrestling, by the way.
- One feature that I find very awesome is the fact that your knowledge about beasts now improves upon reading books about them or fighting them. You don't have to buy books for Witcher contracts anymore, you can just search a couple of the monsters and kill enough of them until your knowledge level about that creature levels up. For example, one of the 5 initial contracts that you can get is called "The Nekken Contract". Once your knowledge level about that kind of monster goes to 1 (for example, by moving out of town and killing a couple of them), you learn that they move underground and the quest changes to having you destroy 4 entrances to their underground pathways. Once you get to knowledge level 3, you learn that you can destroy them with grapeshot bombs.
- The game is fucking beautiful. It's probably not at the top of the world once it comes down to pure technicalities (polygon count, shadow and lighting system quality, etc.), but the artists did an amazing job putting their engine to use. Character models are super detailed (especially once you activate uber sampling) and the environments just look really beautiful in general. Oh god Triss is hot in this game.
- Voice acting is really superb. In general the dialog seems interesting and well written, even though I fear people who didn't like the dialog in Witcher 1 won't like the one in this game either, since it has the same feel and humor.
- There's lots and lots to do so far, and I don't want to stop. The game is all around very fun.
Well, can't think of any more points right now, will post a review probably once I finished the game.

I agree with pretty much everything you posted. I also didn't know that you don't have to buy books. The first thing I did when I got to Flotsam was go to the book dealer and buy all the monster books out of reflex lol.

I did three "execution" type moves in a row after using Aard on an enemy, at the start during prologue. I wasn't able to do it again. What the hell did I do? I just got up close and clicked ;/

Anybody got past chapter 2? I have a problem with the last (?) part of the quest "Siege of Vergen" - 'Defeat Dethmold's men'.
+ Show Spoiler + I kill all soldiers, and their boss Adam Pangratt in the underground corridors. Pangratt lies unconscious, HUD shows red dot on the ground, but i can't hit him. Dethmold just waits outside bluish force-field and there is no way to get to him. Tried this part 3 times with the same result.
Now im basically stuck in the underground chamber, surrounded by forcefield, with Dethmold waiting outside of it. Any idea what to do next?
Help would be very appreciated.

1. I don't think so. 2. Good. Don't worry about that. 3. Buy GoG version. 4. Non-Linear.

I myself had quite an experience with "The Witcher 2", and I think it should be shared. My work schedule leaves me at odd sleep hours, so I was able to stop by my local wal-mart a little after midnight to pick up my copy. Full of excitement and caffeine I rushed home to install my latest acquisition only to find that there was a problem....
My copy of Witcher 2 would....not....install. I updated my drivers, checked to see if my copy was damaged and tried clean rebooting my computer all to no avail. The disks were immaculate, untouched and in perfect condition yet I would run into the same "File transfer error" every time I tried to install.
Some searching on their official website left me depressed as there were quite a few people having the exact same issue. Apparently our drives have some kind of "lightscribe" technology (I'm not sure if that's exactly what its called or not) , and this game was so archaic and fickle that our computers literally cannot take information from the game and put it on the hard drive. I'm a simple gamer with only my 1 PC unable to try multiple different drives, ergo I am left with a useless piece of plastic. Frustrated I went to sleep.
The following day upon returning my product to the luxurious "Wal-mart" I became aware that PC games will not be changed in for any monetary return, only another copy of the same game (with most likely the same issues).
"Fine" I said as I walked away left with only one option. I had luckily purchased this game using my VISA credit card, so instead of dealing with silly retail return rules I contacted my VISA customer support to dispute the charge. Of course they comply and the charge is dropped of my credit statement. Meanwhile I had re-purchased the game through my steam account and everything is working fine. Not only that I have this extra copy that I ended up giving to a friend of mine (who had never heard of it before , but whose computer happened to actually install the game) and now we are both enjoying it.
I don't agree with how the company decided to ship out the product without testing compatibility on a wider range of computers, but in the end all worked out well. 2 games for the price of 1 only suffering a minor headache. Karma. =)

No, you're "asking" because you just built an awesome new computer and want to brag about it. We're impressed, good job.

I have a GTX460 and a 2.66 GHz duocore, and I can run on medium-to-high at 1680 x 1050 at about 50 fps. Real smooth.
