Yup, that's the gist of it. Each time you use a bonfire though all the enemies respawn from what I hear.
Dormer, does the game need an install? I also read that there's been some glitchiness, especially in one case where the game seems to randomly freeze. Have you experienced any of that?
Yes, the monsters respawn when you rest. If you've just gotten past an area and aren't going back it doesn't really matter, but you normally only get five health flasks, which refill when you rest, so if you've used them all you have to decide whether you think you can push ahead and not get hurt or if you should go back, rest, and do it again. Some strong enemies don't respawn, though.
I'm playing on PS3, so no install. I haven't had any glitches yet, though I've only played a few hours.
Gah, me want. The idea of an openish world seems like such a departure from the cleanly segmented Demons SOuls. I hope my PS3 still works i haven't touch it once since, well, Demon's Souls.
It's an open world in that everything is connected, there's no Nexus / hub, no loading screens between areas. There's a general map with the collector's edition, but it's not very detailed, and there's nothing in-game. I'm not sure about invading -- I'm playing offline atm because I'm a pansy and cbf with PvP when the regular monsters are kicking my ass :-p On a second playthrough, maybe.

I believe they closed online because of freezing issues, didn't they?
Well, either way, when it's released in NA and EU, there'll probably be a patch.
I played a bit of Demon Souls on PS3 and although I enjoyed the gameplay and how "hard" it is I hated the fact that you had to restart levels once you die, and basically the game being cheap at times. Dark Souls Limited Edition is out where I live so I have been thinking of picking it up since this time around it has checkpoints with health replenishment etc. But I'm kind of still on the fence as to buy it or not.

Is there any chance you will write an article on it?

Well depends on whether I buy the game or not. Maybe our office will have a review copy once the game is out. Will see

Its kind of the same thing with old JRPGs with limited save points, like its punishing a player for dying by throwing away 3hours worth of progress. The gameplay itself of Demon's Soul is indeed pretty awesome, the enemies are not the cheap part here but rather the built in save/checkpoint system is nearly no existent. Its like being punished for the sake of punishing you.

yea I thought the gameplay was pretty good in Demons Souls but not fun enough to warrant the insane repetition of "get a little further, die, play everything again, get a little further, die, repeat".
I suppose, but its not like levels were that long. The fact that you opened up shortcuts throughout each levels progression means dying never made you have to redo a very long bit of gameplay at all.

Yeah totally you could argue that. But to me at least, Demon Soul's had awesome combat but at the end was a grind because of what IdeaS just said. For some people that kind of kills it, but for others like yourself you seem to have no problems and enjoy the game just fine. I think with Dark Souls though, From Software addressed the problem but having the same hard combat difficulty (they say its even a lot harder this time) while giving options to keep you closer to the where you last died, rather than send you starting from square one.
iunno bout u guys but the biggest thrill in demon souls was getting the message of a black phantom invading lol.
i remember 1-3 specifically every BP rushed to the end with the 3 black knights right b4 penetrator and just waiting for me/blue phantoms to draw aggro on the black knights.
speaking of which i hear 3 black phantoms can invade ? O_o
