The second game can stand on its own. Even old UI controls are re-explained. That said, there is NO reason not to play the first one before you play this one, assuming you are interested in the plot/gameplay. It is cheaper, and will only add onto the experience.
Like the poster above, I also recommend watch the two animations (haven't read any comics). I guess they're not necessary, and they aren't even close to being the best movies out there, but they definitely tie in well with the games. I would argue that people who don't watch the animations are really missing out.

What do you guys think about level progression in the second game? Obviously, it is a lot more seamless than the first one, which is in general a good thing.
I do miss having the tram as the "level portal," though, because each level, it makes me wonder, "when can I get back on the tram...ahhhh....when can I go back to my safe spot?!" Of course, the tram in DS2 is a little less safe...

I'm only on chapter 6, but so far the experience has been outstanding! I haven't jumped this much playing a game in ages. Turn down the lights and turn up the volume for maximum effect.

this game is amazing
currently at chap 8 wish i had more ammo tho, lulz
so in love with pulse rifle & jav gun maybe throw in some line gun

I'm loving the Stalkers. I think their AI mechanics are way better than the standard "Boom! Jump out of a panel and now I'm going to cut you" style that doesn't do much but shock you.

This game is super easy and stale just like the first one. I am currently on ch.8 or 9 with Plasma Cutter fully up, lots of suit/stasis ups, and about 3/4 rifle ups. I have the first suit still too, the engineering one and only plan on maybe getting the stasis suit since stasis is so powerful. telekinesis damage and hp upgrades are worth it. Get hp upgrades when ur hp is red to heal. When you get full hp only heal at red with a LARGE medkit as it heals 100% (at least it did in DS1).
They did fix the aiming which makes it a lot better but its still too easy. I was going to load a save from someone else to play the hardest mode but I am playing zealot because you only get 3 saves on the hardest mode (impossible?). On the first playthrough 3 saves seems like I would spend too much time running back from deaths and it wouldnt be enjoyable. I doubt Ill waste my time doing impossible though Im just gonna beat it on 2nd hardest with no suit ups and 90% plasma cutter.
THIS IS HOW U WIN!
1. Plasma cutter damage 2. Dont get hit, if you do get hit load save (shouldn't be often) 3. Stasis when you need to (stomp/melee them during this) 4. Use limbs/poles/etc priority. 5. Get assualt rifle for swarms and kid/babies (not the tentacle babies) 6. Sell all ammo/medkits/stasis charge except for those 2 guns. 7. Assault alt fire or explosive canisters for those wall tentacle monsters. 8. DONT USE AMMO USE LIMBS + POLES + STASIS + MELEE!
I beat deadspace 1 on hard with the basic suit, like 30 power nodes and retarded amount of credits. So far in DS2 there has only been one hard part where you are a two story area on the bottom, you are in a vacuum, and enemies come from all sides and its DARK so you can't see the whole room. Otherwise its been a joke.
Here is how you kill the enemies with spike arms.
1. Fire 1 plasma shot to break off a spiked limb. 2. Telekinesis limb and shoot it into the body or other limb. 3. Telekinesis other spike limb into next enemy (preferably a spiked one)
If you have a pole/spike/etc (which you should try to carry into the next area) you can save shots. Just telekensis spike first, shoot off spike limb fire limb, take other limb.
I have only bought maybe 4,800 credits/24 fusion cutter ammo and I am going through casually so if you try you wont have to buy any ammo. NEVER BUY AMMO OR GUNS OR SUITS except the assualy rifle around ch 4-5 for swarms.
Upgrading hp, stasis, or capacity fills gun to FULL value, so have 1 bullet then upgrade capacity!
Since you sell everything and upgrade cutter you get lots of nodes (which you buy) and do 2x damage or more. It only takes 1 shot to take off limbs. Also you have to stomp corpses to get ammo which I didnt know for a few chapters so I have a lot less macro rofl....

Just search on youtube alot of walkthroughs/gameplay videos and its better quality then most streams.
|
I might, if it actually matters to people :o
|
I've been watching a playthrough on YouTube, and I must say, this game is kind of amazing.
|
I played through on normal. The game doesn't scare me at all. I'm just not afraid of things that I'm about to kill. Should I replay it on a higher difficulty with less ammo or something? I mean, don't get me wrong, both of the games were incredible, and definitely amongst my recent favorites, but they didn't scare me.

Try darkness, solitude and higher volume.

Just watch it on youtube.
The demo got it ALL WRONG! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the demo consisted of you walking into a large, dark room, and then maybe 5 necromorphs pop out and you have to kill them. The End.
In reality, they don't just give you a room full of necromorphs and say, "lol, k go kill them now." I mean there are times where you're going to be swarmed, but it won't be like the demo. In the real game, I remember that room only have 1 or 2 slashers.
And if anyone is thinking, "hmm it's just shocking and not actually scary, with all the enemies popping out of places unexpectedly," go on youtube and search up 'stalkers' (the DS kind ).

I've seen GLHF.tv stream it before.

please be aware the following is entirely my opinion and not a technical review of the games. i understand alot of people absolutely adore the series, but im not in that boat.
i wasnt really too impressed with dead space 1. far too much "go here" and mind numbing amount of back tracking. dead space wasnt really that scary either - after you shoot down the first couple of monsters, you realize how EASY the game is, and you dont really feel afraid to enter the next room. relying on PEEKABOO fright (ala doom 3) is not true horror. indeed, i once commented it felt like fighting the flood ala Halo.
not to hate on everything, the atmosphere EA created is definitely the best out of most games being released today.
in the end, i enjoyed dead space 1 for its boss battles. the directing and scripting of these fights was just unbelievable, especially the ending battles.
for dead space 2, i was immediately put off by the
+ Show Spoiler +girl at the beginning who says "do what i say if you want to live!". reeked of BIOSHOCK "would you kindly", and in the end, my assumptions were right when she wasnt who she said she was. .
the same deal with the monsters flowed over from the original. plasma cutter > all. at this point killing monsters became more of a chore. the feeling that you knew you had nothing else do in this game aside from killing monsters. actually, it became more annoying, because now there arent boss battles to break the lull, and now there are these baby things that just spawn a million times and die in one shot and really serve no purpose aside from dropping items.
other things that really disappointed me,
+ Show Spoiler + * having to deal with that pyscho dude the whole game, only to kill him near the end of the game * baby monsters * THE ISHIMURA - When I first walked in here, indeed, I was shitting my pants. But then I kept walking ... and walking .. and walking, and no monsters until that long corridor. What a let down.
honestly, I was only entertained at the end of the game (like the first). The direction of these final parts of the game are truly stellar, and I think thats what most people end up playing these games for.

From a critical standpoint, what this person says is definitely true. However, I would have to say that the actual enjoyment depends on each person, so I wouldn't read this and say, "Oh okay, it's a bad game then" and not try it out.

DS2's scariness is highly subjective like most scary things. Darkness, volume (very high) and isolation can make it a lot more fearsome.
|
Has anyone seen the movie Pandorum? It reminds me a lot of DS and DS2
I think the best part of the game is the experience, not the actual gameplay, if that makes sense.
the ambient noises really add a lot to the value of the game
|
I'm Chapter 5, loving it at this point. Voice acting isn't obtrusive, gameplay does have a 'smoother' feel than the first. Like so many previously stated: the experience is enhanced with the lights off and good speakers/headphones for the ambients...

You just said that DS1 end battle was great? Are you kidding? The ending to DS1 was so disappointing and such a huge failure/joke there is a meme of it.
What happens at the end of Dead Space?
Necromorphs bakes you cookies.
That last boss is SO easy and SO stupid.... such a letdown. Its like that boss should have been first. All you do is kill the yellow circles which is super easy even on hard with bad PC controls.
Strafe to avoid tenctacles. GG. Seriously I cant believe you said the last boss was good.
