By corridor, I'm not quite sure if you mean completely metal tube-like corridors, or just corridors in general.
I think that Dead Space 2 retains a lot of what was in the original game. While it's still set mostly in "corridors," they are no longer as plain as they were before (I don't know if you like that or not). Remember the part in the original game with like red carpet and stuff? Dead Space 2 takes place in a shopping center, kid's hospital, outside an elementary, unitology's church, residence halls etc. So yeah, there's less "metal," though still plenty of it in my opinion, but the corridor structure is still the same. Like the first game, there are also large expansive rooms meant for multiple enemy engagements or what not.
I personally prefer DS2's environment. I really enjoyed experiencing the "culture" of the community. Though I didn't find the metal corridors of the first game boring, I think that a second game with nothing but long winding metallic corridors would have bored me.
Heh, I meant corridor shooter in the sense of linear shooter with less reliance on cover, not the literal corridors. (ala HLF2 Bioshock etc)
So your opinion was that the environments were more varied/interesting then Deadspace 1?
It is definitely more varied. I think the developers intentionally tried to move away from 'boring' metallic corridors. So yeah, unless metal corridors really please you with their sci-fi feel, DS2 will not disappoint.

I remember when this kind of move was hugely criticised by everyone, but nowadays it’s the norm to just churn out more money making sequels. I can't believe your actually advocating this kind of laziness.
Being linear does make the game bad. I play games to be challenged and to have to think, not walk down corridor after corridor of scripted events.
They took something that was good 2 years ago, made some small changes and sold a SHORT new campaign at full price. I can’t understand what could drive you to defend such actions.
Are you upset that Starcraft 2 has so many of the same units as the first game? Are you upset they didn't implement cover mechanics like CoH? When SC2 came out a lot of people had exactly the same complaints you're making about DS2. No one seems to get that if they changed the game too much it wouldn't really be a sequel would it? Moreover you'd just alienate your fans from the first game who enjoyed everything the first time through. Would you have been happier if DS2 instituted the shield system from Halo and the cover mechanics from Gears of War?
Additionally, what you're dismissing as "small changes" are actually pretty substantial. The locations are way more varied. There are enough new guns and enemy types to have the game feel fresh to me. They completely redid the way zero G works. Isaac has dialogue and at least an attempt at a personality. And as far as length goes the campaign in DS2 felt just as long as the first game. Not to mention all the areas of the game just look and sound better than the first time around, and the scope of the game just dwarfs the first one.
I agree with this poster. Just look at SC2; it's essentially the same game that was made over ten years ago. I'm not talking about strategy, or the meta game, but when you look at SC2, you can tell very easily that it's still Starcraft, tried and true.
While I can see arguments against CoD as being "lazy," I don't think the developers of Dead Space 2 were lazy at all. They created a whole culture to go along with their new 'world' (the station), and this story is told to us not only through text and audio logs, but importantly through the environment we traverse as well. I am very happy that Dead Space 2 is not just another metallic maze .And omg have you faced the Stalkers yet? In all definitions other than the strictly technical, they are not scripted at all.
I bought the game 3 days ago and finished it 2 times in 3 days (omg i'n so nerd).. This time i have to say that the game is quite more difficult than the first one, i mean ds1 was way too easy, instead ds2 played on zealot level offers some interesting challenges.. Talking about the hard core mode, i wanted to play it but 5 minutes ago i saw a video on youtube showing the "last weapon" you get after completing the hard core mode... omg i am soo disappointed! check it out by yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBS86rAT4W0] [/url]
I cannot even begin to describe how grateful I am that they didnt completely change the game around the way morons like exkid would have it. This game has everything that made the first game awesome, a new story, better sound and a few new mechanics. I got high, put my speakers to full, switched off the lights and played this last night, and I was literally SHAKING from fear Speaking of new stuff, did any of you notice how those headbutter necro's that rush at you hide behind boxes/walls and then peek out at you, see you, and quickly hide again? ITS SO CUTE :3
So, so similar to DS1 in every way. Plot developed exactly the same way, monster progression was the same (even with + Show Spoiler +
an annoying invincible monster at the end!
everything else was basically the same too. Okay we had Isaac with voice this time, that was good.
I didn't like the plot at all. I was hoping to learn more about the origins of the markers or even about the dudes who made it, instead it's basically a story about Isaacs redemption from beginning to end, with very very little new details about unitology and the markers.
By the way, 99% of the time when his girlfriend spoke to him in that distorted voice, I didn't understand a single word because it was way too scrambled. That really pissed me off.
The game had some great cinematic value though. The visual style was awesome, and the ingame cutscenes were well done too. I really WOWed at some of the effects.
I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing, but this game didn't scare me at all. There were lots of shock moments when something came up from behind, but it was more like a "fuck you Dead Space, this shit is getting so old" kind of shock, without fear.
I'm going to check the Dead Space wiki now to look for plot details that I missed, eastereggs etc.
All in all it was a very enjoyable experience, but it probably won't go into my "best games I've ever played" list. I liked Dead Space 1 more, mainly because of the plot.

The background story in the Dead Space games come pretty much from all the text and video logs. However, if you want more story, I highly advise you to watch the two animated movies, they really reveal a lot.
For example, if you were to have watched Dead Space Aftermath, you would have known who Strauss was and what he did before he appears in the game as a crazed mental person, among several other things (like how the Ishimura got to the station, etc).
From interviews, I think that the developers didn't want to make the game plot heavy so as not to avoid the pacing and scariness of the game. They did realize that they had created an interesting story, however, which is why the decided to go ahead and make two animated movies, along with some comics.
I haven't read any of the comics, and the movies aren't great by any means as stand along products, but they serve to flesh out Dead Space really well.
There are 15 chapters, given what you've said there's probably at least another few hours for you. I'm playing through again on zealot+ and I'm sitting at CH13 at about 4hrs.
P.S. Ishimura makes you want to wet yourself, am I right? Hands down best psychological element in the game. :D
It was underwhelming , I'm someone who has bought almost every Dead Space medium there is.
What I got for buying Special Edition for PC was less content, chapters, items etc. than those who bought if for console, so I feel cheated as a fan. Secondly, Isaacs personallity is pure boring shit, he looks mad/stressed/tired... yet he sounds like a casual american douchefag and it pisses me off. Why couldnt they keep him silent? Fuck Zeropunctuation for once cause I loved it just as it was great with Freeman. Giving a character a personallity means you either have to identify with it or you wont like it... you wont feel as if "you" are playing but instead you are playing out someone elses story: In this case a boring Isaac.
His mental ghosts added nothing 90% of the time, and were even corny and moodbreaking alot of times. She talks to fucking much.
Less audiologs/textlogs/backstory. Way less mood.
1½ level was great in atmosphere, the rest felt to safe or actionish. Anticlimaticlly unscary at points they had hyped up as fuck.
A great game nevertheless, but really a letdown in comparisson with the first one.
Also Gametrailers fucking sucks, I played on hardest from start... I had 400 000 in unspent resources at the end (medpacks, powernodes etc.). Use the godamn claws or whatever, you hardly need to use any weapons if you play better than a retarded chimpansese.
EDIT: Sorry for swearing alot but this was a game I had hoped so much for, and what I got was a "Super agent Isaac" (thats how they explained how they wanted to evolve his character) with a slimed suit which made his ass look perfect. Why does his ass looking perfect provoke me? Cause in the first one he uses bulky engineer suits that look realistic and make the whole world seem hostile, the elite suit makes him look like a superhero in spandex.
i really enjoyed the game. its best playing with surround sound headphones and the lights off. It really helps to enhance the atmosphere while doing so. I played through the game on survivalist and it was fairly challenging. You constantly have to keep turning around to make sure they don't spawn behind you. And the limited ammo you've always had on hand really served to increase the tension (though i didn't use kenesis as much as i should have). all in all it's a really good game and i would definetely recommend buying it. also, when i read the description for hardcore i shat brix (unlike the above poster who seems to be a mega gosu baller).
Playing games like Dead Space is so nerve breaking every step I take and further I go down the bottom. Honestly this type of game may is not be to my liking but that is what I like about it.. the thrill it gives me, but im incapable of playing the game straight out because its so exhausting for my heart and mind xD.. i kid u not. I cant imagine playing Silent Hill... I would be dead long ago..
But cant wait to get onto DS2, probably will be on my screen in 2012.
Fulfilled my expectations. Ofc not scary (nothings really scary after amnesia), but the gameplay and "flow" were very solid. Story worked well, though I kinda wish they went more in depth about wtf the markers were made to do.
Kinda of an average but very well made linear shooter, in the grand scheme of things nothing awesome, but very enjoyable to play nonetheless.
Only major complaint is that Isaac VO added absolutely nothing to the game....and the Nicole encounters could have been better besides a qte.
Not worth 60$ on the PC tho lol, borrowed it from a friend. If you wanna be super legit wait until it comes down to 30$ at least.
Just have beaten the game. It's pretty dissapointing that it just took me 7,5 hours on the survivalist difficulty, and I didn't speedrun or anything like that.. I looked in every chamber if I could find something useful before I went on and stuff like that. I thought they would make it longer than the original :\ Still a great game though, there were some really really really cool sequences with Isaac hallucinating.
