Agree on parts of your argument of the quests being linear, but I think its only for some quests (such as class quests) other quests gives more freedom and the outcomes of the quest is based on how you undertake it. For instance, the redguard lady quest in dragonsreach where you either have the choice to tell her off to the guards that are looking for her or kill the guards.

I spent 2 hours doing nothing but pickpocketing and also Archery-train abusing, and now I have a level 16 character with 67 Pickpocket, 52 Archery, and 36 Sneak.
You can imagine how well I do in combat >.>

Wish they took your level into account when generating those quests, I hate cluttered quest logs.

Just started the Mage Guild quest line, hoping that one will be better, don't see how it could be any worse. Hahahahaha, if the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest-lines made you want to cry, don't even bother with the Mages Guild, else you'll be weeping before long. So short, so linear, and the story isn't even that majestic. It's also easer to do as a warrior then a mage at low levels imo All the quest lines are complete garbage in Skyrim. After about 20ish hours of playing this game I've done the exact same dungeon fetch quest over and over just in different locations. The writing behind the quests is equally as bad and there aren't even multiple dialogue options for your character. It just feels weird to have the player choose his dialogue and there is almost always only one option. Very lazy and uninspired. Also, as others have mentioned the faction quest lines are also incredibly short which just makes it even harder to stomach. Stop whining. This game is incredible. I find you get what you put into a game like this. I've been playing every day and I haven't come close to finishing any of the guilds because I've been so busy talking/exploring/trading/training/customizing/etc.
I guess if you only play this game to knock out missions over and over instead of playing open-ended and exploring and creating a character, it would seem like garbage. But complaining about dialogue when there are thousands of characters with their own unique dialog is ridiculous.

The game is great, I do love it, but that doesn't make the guild quest-lines any longer. They're each ~6 quests long (the thieves guild being the longest): after the first ~2 initiation quests, you'll start the 'big' (one might even say, majestic) quest, which will end in you being the guild-leader. Ta-da!
Edit: I think the biggest complaint comes with the comparison to Morrowind: the Morrowind Mages Guild had 33 quests from multiple NPCs, and you had some choice as to what order you completed the quests in.

If you haven't done the quest, this will spoil it. + Show Spoiler +This quest ended for me when I walked to the Jarl's advisor and told him about the evidence I have on the court mage doing the crime. I was looking it up online and apparently you're supposed to talk to the court mage and he'll tell you that it wasn't him but Carlixto and that there will be a 2nd murder. On my quest though, the quest ended right when I spoke to the advisor and when I go to jail and talk to the mage all I can do is ask him for destruction training, I even unlocked his cell ffs. I know my quest is technically done and I should just be happy but I feel bad for the mage and I want that Carlixto guy locked up. wutdo?
I ended up doing the quest the same way as you. What happens is....
+ Show Spoiler +Another person is murdered starting a new quest. The mage helps you catch Carlixto.

I think its amusing how the animations for one handers are meant for slicy weapons. Getting a critical hit on opponents, you kinda slice your weapon across them. But I have a mace! I'm having a lot of trouble finding orc blood to harvest for the quest Discerning the Transmundane. Anyone know any good locations to kill an orc?

quick question for y'all...
I'm going to not be on this specific computer for about a week and a half, I own skyrim for the PC, bought it through steam. I was wondering, is my saved game tied to my computer or my skyrim account? During the week and a half I'm going to be using a different computer and I'd like to continue with the saved point and character I have, rather than having to make a new one on the different machine
tl;dr-ish: is your saved game tied to your steam account or your computer?

ALSO:, a dragon attacked my camp, accidently his flame hit 3 horses, AND THE HORSES BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THAT DRAGON... A scene you can witness once in a life time....
