Went 3-1 at FNM tonight, lost to some guy playing UWR Control with Talrand and 5 CMC Jace maindeck, but punted hardcore in that game. Oh well, doing Pre-release at the shop tomorrow, going Selesnya and hoping to get Simic or Gruul.

Also, for those looking to speculate on cards, Progenitor Mimic is MUCH better than it seems, like it'll probably be a breakout mythic.

Eh, Heartless Summoning, GO!

It looks fun, just it doesn't seem useful right now, Angel of Serenity ideally is the card you want to copy right now, can't think of much else you really wouldn't want to copy for value. Thragtusk seems alright too.

Thragtusk, Angel of Serenity, Blood Baron of Vizkopa, Thundermaw Hellkite, Craterhoof Behemoth, and Falkenrath Aristocrat all seem like pretty decent copy targets.

Card is clunky, I can see it having limited fringe uses, but I would wager against it being a breakout mythic(my wager is in the form of me not buying them ..)

Welp, currently at my prerelease, opened Underworld Connections and Obzedat that I'm playing, Vorel of the Hull Clade, Lanivia the 10th, and a couple of other junk rares I'm not. Deck has a pretty decent curve and excellent fixing, so I have a good chance of cashing, but I'm fucking exhausted...

Edit: X-0 splitting finals.

My 20-person LGS opened 4 Ral Zareks.

I was not one of those people.

Also, my Rakdos buddy (there were only two of us, most guilds had 3 and Izzet had 1 haha) opened Boborygamos, Rakdos, the new Hydra, Ral Zarek. He also had 3 Land Destruction, an Auger Spree and Mugging in his pool. This was his first large event, and he did better than I did.

When you have 3 of them and you're playing Jund so you have cost efficient creatures and spot removal, you do pretty well. And since everyone is playing 3color, they almost inevitably are short on a color T5. In particular, Frenzied Tilling seems really underrated by drafters. When you resolve it, you tend to win, because you are up 2 lands. Destroy the Evidence is probably the worst, but LD gets better the more of them there are.

For example, when we played, he just played things I had to answer instead of attacking myself, and then kept me from hitting the 7th land for Teysa. He nuked 3 straight lands, and after the third played Boborygamos. Just insane to try to play against.

Went 2-3 drop at Prerelease. Selected Selesnya and had Gruul as secret ally. Didn't have many bombs but Commons and Yncommons did a lot of work. Selesnya finished the Maze the same time as Boros in Round 4 but Boros won by a much bigger margin so didn't get to be a Champion haha.

Feel like I misplayed a lot since I don't normally play aggro decks. Hm. Need to think over mistakes. Time to get some work done first!

Just played Search the City vs KtheZ, first game mana screwed (which shouldn't ever happen on a 24-land mono-color), but shit happens and I'm definitely vulnerable to it. Second game I misplayed a block which cost me the game. Very fun though! I managed to resolve 3 straight Temporal Masteries.

I went 3-4-1 at my prerelease, ending at 77 out of 162 people. I went golgari, thinking it'd be cool to play in the lategame and all that shit since this was going to be a much slower format (and I didn't feel like playing orzhov). I was wrong, golgari performed worse than any other guild, and the only one that even got close to doing as badly was dimir. Orzhov, azorius and boros did best.

I got gruul as my ally which I was initially happy with, and not so much after opening amazing cards like signal the clans.

But I enjoyed it, and if I were to play in another prerelease event (which I may tomorrow, doubtful though), I'd probably try either orzhov (because who doesn't like winning) or izzet, which performed surprisingly well.

How big of a place is your shop, Canas?! Our local place is lucky enough to get 60 in the door, lol!

It's actually pretty small, we typically have like 30-35 people at a normal FNM, and that means the shop is full, but the city I live in has a population of roughly 200k, so prereleases tend to be pretty big, so it was held in the cafeteria of a nearby school.

Ok. So. More extended thoughts and also notes to myself about becoming a better player.

  • I am bad at aggro decks: Too often I will not play around being blown out by things like Ætherize and should just ride my advantage instead of always going for the "Do you have the answer or you die now" plays. I think too much about ending the game faster so my opponent has less outs than trying to play around stuff.
  • Don't be so greedy trying to squeeze in damage: I kept trying to nickel and dime an extra damage here or there and opening myself to answers like Turn 2 Devour Flesh on my suited-up one drop. Playing a second one-drop would have prevented this and I would still have crushed face. Sometimes it's ok not to achieve maximum mana efficiency every turn in order to play around cards.
  • Become better at combat math: I often spent ages trying to think of the right attacks because I don't normally swing with stuff. Practise, practise, practise.
  • I hate playing decks without draw manipulation: Having 15 turns to find my out and drawing 0 creatures urgh. Fetchlands and Brainstorm please.
  • Read the rules on cards: Also I need to learn the important interactions of the newer mechanics I don't know before going for L1.
  • Build better mana bases: I have a very good Naya curve so I went for 16 lands. But I think perhaps using some Cluestones for better fixing (I often found myself cut off one colour even on turn 4+) might have been correct. At the time I felt like I just wanted more dorks to hit people but Cluestones also cantrip so it might not have been too bad.
  • Mulligan more aggressively: When I drew my low curve stuff, I just crushed people's faces and I was willing to mull to 6 to do so. But I think I also need to be willing to mull to 5 aggressively as well when I need to.
  • Put in burn spells in limited aggro deck: I had an aversion to things like Punish the Enemy because it was really expensive and didn't fit my curve. I also think of things in terms of Lightning Bolts or Lightning Helixes. But in all the games I lost I got my opponent to 1 before they stabilised. Every game. Burn would have given me the reach I needed.
  • Finishing the maze is about your Guild pick: Boros was the nuts as always, while also being popular. A lot of other guilds need to have the nut packs in order to be good but Boros and to an extent Selesnya can rely on their Commons/Uncommons to do most of the heavy lifting. Just as Round 4 started Boros was one step away from finishing the Maze, Selesnya was one Guild circle behind them (and both finished the Maze by end of R4). Azorius, Izzet, Golgari and Dimir weren't even halfway through the maze by R6.

Overall despite not doing as well as in the last Pre-Release I went to, I think I learnt a lot more about how I can become a better player. Also pulled some nice cards although nothing is really Eternal playable so just trade fodder. (Foil Teysa so pretty, yet so unplayable urgh. Yes, I'm still bitter.)

Hm. My one had 70 for the morning session, and then another 50 in the afternoon. There's more events going on tomorrow and in the evening lol.

Hit the midnight prerelease, and after bombing in FNM mainly due to absolute shit draws (mull to 4 on 1 land 3 times), I took the whole thing 6-0 with my boros/azorius deck. Pulled supreme verdict and assemble the legion from the guildpacks, used no other rares. Along with those 2 heavy hitters (assemble had literally won me 4 consecutive games at one point), Viashino Firstblade and nivix cyclops (2 each), and Warleader's helix also put in some really good work. Keyrunes, and to a slightly lesser extent, cluestones, were straight up boss. I'll post the full decklist later if anyone cares.

Participation was a bit light today, only 60ish people, so first place was 30 packs rather than the box they usually do. Pulled Ral, 2 Voice, and a legion's initiative, so I'm very happy with the winnings to say the least!

4-1 at prerelease with Azorius + Boros. AEtherling, Martial Law, Molten Primordial, Renounce the Guilds for rares that made it into the deck at some point, Trait Doctoring and Elusive Krasis for rares I didn't play. Blast of Genius, Warleader's Helix, Punish the Enemy, 2x Runner's Bane, Renounce the Guilds, Far//Away for removal (as well as Hussar Patrol). 4 gates + the white and blue gatekeepers, a bunch of flyers. Curve wasn't great (played 18 lands + izzet cluestone to keep it flowing) but I just killed everything threatening and raced everything else.
