My shop is small, ~20 people, but they do prizes a little differently. To start with, the 2 packs for each player are considered their packs, as in, every player gets 2 packs regardless of results. For prizes, a box of cards is split into piles of 12-8-4-4-2-2-2-2 and put on a table. All of the Swag Pack (Binders, Mats, Deckboxes) is also put on the table, and then you get to pick in order. When he counted, the manager realized that the bottom 2 people would be empty handed, so he put a box of dice and a box of Sorin vs Tibalt on the table as well. Its easily the friendliest shop I've been to, there is a massive shop (150+, had a MtG Designer at prerelease) literally around the corner, but it isn't nearly as fun of an atmosphere.

P.S. Sorin vs Tibalt was picked 12th, after playmats and sleeves.

I am always a fan of top heavy prize distrubtion(top 8) with a few consolation prizes, and where there is a gap between positions. I dislike when playing for spots doesn't actually mean anything since the prizes are going to everyone anyways, especially when playing is fueling your collection etc. I've always shied away from shops that distribute to basically everyone with prize distribution, although pre-releases are slightly different due to the variety of players that tend to show up.

Anyone attending GP Portland, I'm already committed on a deck so I can't really think/change much about it, and I haven't played modern since the eggs ban so I hope everything goes smooth. Just looking to make Day 2 at my home GP would be nice, but I won't call it a bad weekend if I don't make Day 2.

Good luck at the GP! Hopefully you're playing a deck that would be weak to combo, but since combo is gone things can be glorious for you! :D ((Still pack your combo hate for kiki, but that deck is so easy to beat post-sideboard for my tron deck I can't imagine you having problems with it if you choose anything that can run combust))

Yes, it saves them from ALL wipes, even terminus and mutilate (that boros charm/rootborn defenses couldn't protect from).

Better than I thought, then. Will have to nab one while I can.

I'm on Jund with white, I would have preferred being more proactive , but i do have good threats and good disruption, and good sideboard/answers with access to 4 colors, so it's really going to come down to my rusty paper magic skills, remembering triggers, keeping track of everything etc, gonna be fun, and the matchups, how well I can figure out what my opponents playing and what to discard etc without practicing a lot.

. Last Modern GP had quite the variety of decks so I'm expecting something similar.

Think you need a read on the meta in order to take advantage of your 4 colors; so try to figure that out at least.

If I had time to prepare I would, it would probably be a good idea, but I don't like making presumptions on the meta for modern based off of magic online results, since they haven't correlated in the past, and since my main method of practicing/acquiring information is MTGO .... (PTQ MOnline meta and PTQ paper meta were really different).

I'll scout out thursdays last chance gpts though.

I'm sure someone from Vegas or California area is going that I know, I just need to find out, but I don't really think anyone has a good read on the meta, I don't know anyone from Pacific Northwest going personally, I don't play physical anymore.

Has anyone been playing around with aetherling in their control decks? I just played against a guy who ran it and it was quite impossible to deal with and also did 8 dmg a turn if unanswered(but i answered it every time cause esper control is silly like that).

It seems like a very strong finisher for control; once it hits the board barring any extraneous circumstances or pithing needles it is invulnerable

Don't like it that much. Worse than Obzedat in most cases in Esper. Better in other control decks.

I'm curious, I didn't get to go to the pre-release in my area. What happens at a pre-release usually? Are there things you can get there that you normally can't get?

Kinda new to all this stuff.

I've been planning a Junk lifegain deck that revovles around Faithmender, Thragtusk, Blood Baron, Obzedat, and Centaur Healer to pump up your life, then finish them off with a Blood Baron or creature attacks.

Other cards considered:
Lingering Souls
Vault of the Archangel
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad
Tithe Drinker
Orzhov Charm
Restoration Angel
Elixir of Immortality (sideboard for control, fuck you drownyard)
Trostani, Selesnya's Voice
Ready // Willing
Selesnya Charm

Again, it's just an idea at this point, but we'll see where it goes.

Played against it online. Didn't do much. The deck is a lot of slow do nothings.

Edit:
Deck had 3 mainboard Elixirs, didn't matter. I ended up ticking Jace up and ulti.

Seems like an incredibly incorrect build to me. Should have a sideboard full of more hard to answer threats (Sigarda, the rest of the 4 Sorins, some amount of enchantment removal, maybe Avacyn) for control and be pre-boarded against aggro.

None of those cards matter. The deck plays like a Junk rites deck except without any of the back breaking interactions, so its pretty bland.
