pulled 2 of the plansewalker, too bad it was off color. immediately trade? Nearly all Planeswalkers fall in value hard after release. (For example, Jace, Architect of Thought and Vraska were both like $40 prerelease/just after release but at now like $10 and $6 respectively.) Very few Planeswalkers actually hold value and typically it's because they are playable in Eternal Formats (like Jace the Wallet Sculptor, Liliana of the Veil and Karn Liberated). Standard playable ones hover around $15 (Jace Memory Adept and Sorin Lord of Inistrad).
Planeswalker prices are quite sticky and take time to fall since people don't want to miss out "the next Jace" but I doubt R&D will ever make another Planeswalker as good at Jace for a long time (if ever).
In my opinion, Ral Zerek does not seem Eternal playable to me and might have cute applications in some Standard decks. If you wanted to, you could trade them away now and pick them up again once they fall in value.

Went 3-1, Orzhov Selensnya, ended up playing black white green red whatever the hell. Lost my only match because i thought i could extort off of a blood-rush Q_Q, Pulled Voice, Skylasher, and Scivenr from prize packs :D

X-0 split finals with Junk base Orzhov:
+ Show Spoiler + 1x Underworld Connections 1x Executioner's Swing 1x Basilica Guards 1x Putrefy (foil too!) 1x Hired Torturer (very underrated) 1x Stonefare Crocodile (non-rare MVP) 1x Sunspire Gatekeepers 1x Orzhov Cluestone 2x Golgari Cluestone 1x Profit // Loss (huge blowouts) 1x Stab Wound 1x Thrashing Mossdog (just behind crocodile) 1x Devour Flesh 1x Haada Snare Squad 2x Battering Krasis 1x Obzedat, Ghost Council 1x Transguild Promenade 1x Sewer Shambler 1x Korozda Gorgon 1x Sin Collector 1x Basilica Screecher 1x Vizkopa Guildmage
2x Orzhov Guildgate 1x Golgari Guildgate 5x Plains 4x Swamp 4x Forest
Deck was amazing. 2nd prerelease in a row that I pulled Obzedat (and subsequently finished top 3 split), though he only came down 3 times and I died with him in my hand once. Stonefare Crocodile was the MVP, 3 games I scavenged onto him, and 2 other game I had him and Vizkopa Guildmage for some extra damage, and he even saved my ass by chump blocking once.
I opened both the Azorius and Simic Champions as well as a couple of (bad) rare split cards, so I wasn't playing any Dragon's Maze rares, but in the packs I got later I ended up getting Ral Zarek + Godless Shrine in the same pack as well as Deadbridge Chant, Blood Baron, all the rest of the Champions bar Teysa, some more split cards, and Obzedat's Aid.
I'm strongly considering Junk midrange as my new deck. Right now, I'd be cutting Ghor Clan Rampager, Aurelia, Boros Charm, Wolf Run, and Aurelia's Fury for Obzedat, Blood Baron, Ready // Willing, Putrefy, Gaze of Granite, and/or Valroz.
Not sure if it's better quite yet, we'll find out!

+ Show Spoiler +24 Cards 2 Wind Rake 1 Runner's Bane 1 Last Thoughts 1 Keymaster Rogue 1 Splatter Thug 1 Ogre Jailbreaker 1 Stab Wound 1 Rakdos Shred-Freak 1 Shadow Slice 1 Midnight Recovery 1 Wight of Precint Six 1 Grisly Spectacle 1 Breaking & Entering 1 Wear & Tear 1 Turn & Burn 1 Mind Grind 1 Warleader's helix 2 Viashino Firstblade 1 Spawn of Rix Maadi 1 Armored Wolf-Rider 1 Hellhole Flailer 1 Pilfered Plans
17 Land 1 Dimir Guildgate 1 Boros Guildgate 1 Rakdos Guildgate 1 Selesnya Guildgate 2 Plains 3 Island 4 Swamp 4 Mountain
4-2 Dimir & Rakdos.
I did not have enough cards to make mill my win con but I used some mill cards to help me out. It turned out to be some kind of grixis aggro deck with a splash of white (and a very small splash of green).
Keyblade Rogue, Viashino Firstblade, Breaking & Entering, Warleader's Helix, Shadow Slice, Runner's Bane, Stab Wound and Turn & Burn were the cards were the golden cards I used in most of my wins.

4-1 with Izzet/Boros.
Ended up playing mostly Boros with random Izzet though. Got some good rares, but for green/black, so ended up only playing two rares in my deck. Surprisingly did pretty well though, third overall haha.

I trade a Tamiyo for a Liliana and a Tybalt. I instantly regretted it, then hated myself and now don't feel as bad. Magic the Gathering!
EDIT: This was right after the first AVR draft, just to give it a time frame.

Meh, just ask yourself if its eternal playable, if not, it's not going to be worth a whole lot. Wizards really does want to avoid the whole Jace fiasco.

Went 5-1 after being convinced to play Dimir. Got Dimir Golgari. Realized my green was actual shit beyond Jarad. Had absurdly good rares otherwise: Ral Zarek, Teysa, Pontiff of Blight, Battleshaper, Soul Ransom, played BUwr, featuring 3x black gatekeeper with 5 gates. Got owned in the finals games 2 and 3 by Far//Away, part of the reason I though Dimir was good. Hard to beat 2x Far//Away on end step/next main phase. Game 3 opponent hit Ultimate Price, Putrefy, Far//Away to survive while I hit lands. Possibly could have played it better. 2nd out of 45 for my 3rd prerelease is fine with me.
Can't complain simply on the basis of the rares that I pulled. Dimir tied for best, lost on breakers for the guild. Gonna have nightmares about Far//Away...

Praying to the gods don't pair me with azorious. I'm orzhov azorious. Damnit. Got the primordial in my orzhov pack. Look at all my black, such trash. Not a single orzhov or azorious multicolor card in my DGM packs. Standard. Made American.
Dropped one match to finish in 8th, only got 6 packs. Sigh.

4-2 Azorius Dimir, though really jsut dimir mill off of mind grind, grisly spectacles and a mirko vosk. Worked pretty well until the games I had mindgrind sit in hand but no way to actaully reasonably mill them out.

Went 2-2-1 at my Pre-release event with Azorious + Simic (so Bant) splashing for Tajic. Won vs. Esper and Bant, lost to Rakdos w/ 3 bloodrush cats and Rakdos + Boros (where I mulled to oblivion g1, and g2 he goes t3 Frontline Medic). Drew against someone playing Orzhov + Golgari but not by choice (dude was playing super slow, where I'd have called a judge if we had one). Pulled a Sire, Tajin, and Council out of the Pre-release packs, got a Plasm Capture from the 2 packs I get for sticking it out to the end (finished 13th out of 32).
Jalenn Sphinx puts in some nice work, and the white Gatekeeper (and by proxy, the Gatekeeper cycle) is also good if you have like 5+ gates in your deck. Beetleform Mage though is an all-star in limited, definitely something to grab if you are going Simic in DGM.

Only 6 packs?! You lucky devil, you, lol!!
Both my friends were technically Azorius, but Mr. Dimir got paired with Dimir and Mr. Orzhov got paired with Orzhov so it kinda worked to their advantages anyways. The guy going Orzhov got an Obzedat in his guild pack. Was that normal for Orzhov players? Or was he uber-lucky?

lol 6 packs, i got 10th in a 62 player for 2 packs, and 2nd in a 40 for 4 packs, be thankful

2-2 at my PR 2 head giant.
I went simic with a bit of azorius/selensya and my friend a rakdos aggro. I pulled two Vorel of the hull and we made some hilarious rakdos monster. We won one game with a rakdos cackler 33/33 with trample and lifelink (had some armadillo cloack too). Was fun.
Overall didn't pull any mythic though ):

Dang, you guys get ripped at your LGS for pre-release, if we do top 8, everyone gets a box, if we just go straight 1-2 and split, top 2 gets 24 packs at least.
Edit:
This is with like 50+ people.

Official prize pool support is 2 packs per player. How the TO decides to divide it up however is up to them, but it is mandatory to have minimum 2 packs per player prize support by Wizards rules.
Although when I got top 4 at RTR Pre-release I only got 10 packs. Wish I got a box lol. Sound like either a top-heavy prize pool or your TO is very generous and adds in extra.

It possibly depends on the amount of people that participate as well. It sounds like the shops that Risen and Judi go to have many more participants than ours; ~160 compared to 60-70 is a pretty big difference.

We had ~90 people and I got 23 packs for X-0 (standings 3rd, but X-0 got the same prizes).

See that's the thing, for a small city like ours, we have an unusual number of card shops that do midnight pre-release. It use to be just the one shop in town that does it, but for some reason, 3 other shops do it around town.
So we actually don't have 160 players, between our city and neighboring towns I would say that there's about 5 or so shops that are pretty active.
The midnight release for DGM was 75. The time I did it for RtR was something like 65. I got 27 packs for the split of 1-2 for RtR.
MoonBear is right that our store is top heavy in terms of prize support which imo is a terrible way to keep people, but great for people who can just go infinite pretty easily since a split of top 1-2 is like 2 more drafts at least. If you win outright its usually 3 or 4.
|
I got 30 for 1st out of 61 at our shop, they do the 2-per and usually throw in a few more at the low end of the prizing. Went to 19th at ours, I think. Definitely pulled my money's worth too, so I'm happy. Traded a Voice for a 2nd Ral today too.
