You will spend most of your time doing the same things you have always done in mmo. Go kill 10 of these then run to some guy. Go to some dungeon and pound on dumb MOBs till you get to some big mob and hope you get cool loot. Then maybe every once in a while do some cool big battles with other players if you get lucky.
This is not the great hope of MMO. It won't dethrone WoW. It is not innovative.
Sadly I see it going to free to play after the hype of the first few months wears off.
God help them when Knights of the Old Republic comes out and the playerbase moves on.
Nothing will dethrone WoW, so I don't even know why people look for any MMO that will. That's one of the problems with the people in the MMO community, and that is that people are so hellbent on playing what's the biggest and baddest game at the time, and can't just play a game that they enjoy.
I'm not saying WoW isn't good, hell I played it through the early part of WoTLK, but a lot of what made WoW popular, is only the mere fact that it was popular.
And no, Rift isn't revolutionary or cutting edge with what it's doing, but it's still a solid game, just as solid as WoW is, and will probably attract a good community of people who want to play it just because they enjoy a new game, in hopes that it will be popular enough to have fun with, and not just flop because people don't want to move away from their beloved crusty WoW.
Also the Old Republic looks pretty stale. I have no interest in it personally.

Why does something need to "dethrone" WoW? I'm not sure why you people play games at all, but I play them to be entertained. WoW hasn't been able to entertain me in years, and I have no intentions of touching that game ever again. The Rift beta events have been very entertaining so far, hence I'll give the game a shot.

The only MMO that's going to "dethrone" WoW is another MMO by Blizzard. :|
Don't look for a WoW killer, I did that several times and got majorly disappointed (Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Aion).
Just look for a fun MMO and don't judge it by "but WoW has this and that and bladibladibla".

The only way to kill WoW is to kill the millions of people who have developed an inseparable symbiosis with it.

Open beta starts this 15th, to the 22nd I believe (or 21st).
I played in the last beta, and really loved it so far. I'm probably going to preorder it after this beta, I really love the environment and overall feel of the game, it's somewhat "dark" when compared to other games. I did the first dungeon, which is like level 18, and the bosses even have strategies that you have to follow in order to kill them. The last boss has like 4 phases IIRC, and my group couldn't even kill the last one because our healer would always let the tank die once he had to move out of the green swirly thing the boss drops .

WoW is the judging point because it's the first MMO that is mainsteam successful. Like holy shit successful.
It's the same reason everyone says "Oh, this and that are like WoW-clones" ... shit, WoW is a clone of all the MMOs before it, too. All (okay, 90%) MMOs are clones of one and other, minus some modifications. I think the biggest thing WoW has going for it is not any sort of innovation or gameplay thing, it's the 5832907690320 people that play it that keep that game going. Hell, for the longest time I was bored out of my mind with the game but just played it because.....everyone else did. All the other MMO's were so sparsely played that they just weren't fun.
More on topic of RIFT, I see a lot of the hype that I saw with Aion, WHO...like you said, all these "new and innovative WoW-killers"... it's just not gonna happen, I totally agree. Thankfully I've began to play what is fun to me, and not what is fun to everyone else...and WoW does a good job of filtering out a good portion of the noobs / idiots who are just there to fuck with the game. like LOTRO was so much fun before it went free to play, because people would rather pay monthly for WoW and not LOTRO...so less idiots there to ruin the experience.

This game is actually really good. I have preordered it and am going to play pretty HC for the first week or two. I LOVE the addition of shard firsts for almost everything.
In the last beta I got shard first message for 3 different green items I found while killing rare mobs. It is a really fun system!
I also love the invasions. So much fun pulling together as a zone and just spending 2 hours defeating the invasion. At the end of it all...you actually felt like you had to fight off this big invasion as a group.
You have people yelling in chat "need help at X" "Big group coming to Y" "Getting overran at Z" It is really fun =D.
Hope to see some TL people on there. Me and a bunch of RL friends going to be rolling on Stonecrest as Defiant. We are going to be focused on end game PvP mostly. We will most likely run the heroic (whatever the name is in this game) 5 man dungeons...but no real plans to raid.
If you are really into PvP and not a complete fuck, feel free to drop in and PvP with some experienced PvPers.

Im playing on cloudborne in beta and will play there in retail if they keep these shards, would love to meet some TLers there Got a rly nice guild there, we dominated Age of Conan and are very competitive PvPers. Could probably get some TLers into guild, if anyone wishes to join hit me up on TL and i'll see what I can do.

Bump for open beta starting tomorrow. Come give it a shot.
|
Hell yea! Can't wait for open beta so that I can get my fix until launch.
Still have a few souls that I wanna try out!
Have yet to find one more enjoyable than Void Knight/Champion though!

WoW is awful, I really don't understand why people play it anymore.
If you find RIFT to be fun, play it? Why judge it based on what WoW got?
People seem to forget that alot of the shit you see in WoW is taken from daoc, EQ etc. Just because RIFT got talent points that doesnt mean they have copied WoW.
Kids need to wake up.

Okey, i just preordered this with no thought at all. Downloading the beta that just started aswell. Lets hope it's awesome! =D
Btw, if there are any europeans that will start playing once it's released I'm thinking of starting a hardcore guild pretty early. I'm mostly into pvp, but pve is cool too. I don't know how any of those things work since I haven't done any research or played it before, but lets hope it's good.
Just noticed there are 2 factions aswell. I'm going to go for Defiant once it's live, I think.

So pumped to try this out. Got my open beta Key ready. Is there going to be a TL guild? Server?
|
Join Cloudborne if you have the open beta client, this is fun.
|
I got no idea what I am doing but man this is fun! Streaming if anyone wants to watch:D Huko1 on ustream
|
I just got the beta but can't make a character, is anyone else having problems with character creation?
|
Swissm, they are having server issues right now. It will be resolved shortly ( I hope )
|
I got disconnected at last boss, went to log back on, characters were gone. So I assume they are having some problems.
|
God this game is awful. It's almost 100% like WoW, only worse and with a little bit of Warhammer Online and Guild Wars added in (I get the feeling that the talent system is inspired by Guild Wars, but I can't say anything about that since I never played Guild Wars), and that sucks. Nothing against WoW or the other 2 games, but after 5 years or something that shit is simply boring.
I could really use something fresh, but sadly DC Universe Online isn't any better, according to reviews (despite having a refreshing combat system).
