Lots and lots of changes made, some of them pretty drastic.

If you are going for a warrior elf or something like that, wisdom does not seem like the best choice of racial. Ya. It's like they are pigeonholing you into selecting a certain class / race combo, if you are trying to min/max your char. But it is still beta, so it's possible it'll change by release, and I hope it does.

You have to be very activate with your fears and stuns and if any melee hero with a two handed weapon happens to catch you its pretty much GG, your dots wont even kill him in time to save you, and you sure as hell arent gonna be standing still and casting void bolts. Marksman can also handle that combination of classes pretty easily since they outrange/outdps your dots even if you miraculously happen to get all your dots (including neddras grasp) on them. Whos to say some cleric just throws a couple of heals on someone and thereby reducing the chance of them dying to zero percent? Well, the same could be said for WoW, yet Warlocks used to be insanely imbalanced and are still super-effective. Sure, healers can heal through dots and even dispell them, not really relevant to a 1v1 encounter, and in an encounter where there's a healer, you can just dot more people to give the healer so much to do their mana will be hitting rockbottom immediately. In a situation with more people it's even better since the opponents can't ignore everyone and go for you without being zerged by other players, making kiting easier and also allowing the pet and dots to heal you more. Of course, a 2h melee fighter will win in a closerange encounter, but that's why I mentioned kiting which includes a lot more than just running away. The dominator soul gives a lot of abilities to keep someone away from you.

Do you start with a decently high level character in this game's Beta, or do you have to start from scratch? You have to level your own character, unfortunately.

I think I'm going to preorder it at some point, the fact that it seems a Rogue might be able to tank when speccing into Riftstalker makes me kinda curious...

Tanking in general like for instances and such, maybe. Tanking in the sense that nothing will probably be able to kill you since you have so many escapes, definitely.

However, if the cost was worth it i.e. I could afford to spend more time on it, thus getting more for my money, I'd probably go get it in order to enjoy that early, chaotic 'holy crap this is all different and the mathcrafting nerds haven't ruined all the fun out of it, yet' period.

http://www.riftgame.com/betasignup As far as servers and stuff I have no idea, not sure if there will be enough interest for a guild but you never know. I haven't been playing much in the recent beta events because I don't want to spoil too much

You will spend most of your time doing the same things you have always done in mmo. Go kill 10 of these then run to some guy. Go to some dungeon and pound on dumb MOBs till you get to some big mob and hope you get cool loot. Then maybe every once in a while do some cool big battles with other players if you get lucky. This is not the great hope of MMO. It won't dethrone WoW. It is not innovative. Sadly I see it going to free to play after the hype of the first few months wears off. God help them when Knights of the Old Republic comes out and the playerbase moves on.

This game needs more attention, it takes good things from other mmo's and adds it's own flavour to it.
