Grifts drop far more Blood Shards and upgrade gems tho, moreover, since you don't need to loot stuff you can keep moving which makes a difference over a large amount of rifts/Grifts.

In season 4 you have to play them both. Rifts for grift keys, gold and yellows and Grifts for legendary gems+blood shards. And if you want to use the cube, you need to do bounties too.

I enjoy Grifts faaaar more. Just focus on killing stuff without the intense looting which hurts the flow of things.
I have a autohotkey script, that when I press F1, it toggles spam of left mouse button. I dont give a flying ass that its not "legal", and I even recommend it to my friend who struggled with looting as well and quited the game cause of it.

I heard its better to get your ancient in upgrading rare (hope of cain), then the reforge recipe that demands a frigging 50 soul shards. Anyone have experience in this?

I believe the Ancient chance is the same for both method's and upgrading is a lot cheaper then the other option.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

yeah i understand that gear searching is the main reason people keep playing. im just wondering whether i personally would get bored of the game once i finish the campaign again (since i havent played the expansion yet) and i get decent enough gear to get a good feel for the character im playing.
i guess i could keep repeating so that i get to play each character once or whatever, but my goal would just be to test each character then, rather than commit and grind for gears

The campaign is a very minor part of the experience now, especially if you've already played it. The expansion introduced adventure mode which is where nearly 100% of your time will be spent once you finish the campaign once.

If you think you're going to play it just for the campaign and call it a day by finishing the story then it's probably not worth it. That would take a lot less than 1-2 weeks too. The 1-2 weeks was an estimate at how long it will take to get a character "up to speed" (relatively) so you can start REALLY playing on the highest difficulties, grouping for various activities, progressing on leaderboards and hitting seasonal goals, etc. It depends on where you draw the line. 2 weeks to get decent gear and call it quits is one thing, but most here will probably tell you that's 1-2 weeks to truly "start" the endgame, that's where the real fun begins.

For a game with no subscription cost the amount of time I dump into D3 is pretty ridiculous

You don't even need 1-2 weeks now, if you know what you are doing, 7-8 hours to level 70, then 10 hours tops you are in at least Torment 6 doing the real stuff.

And casually playing at a couple of hours a day, tops, you are looking at a week+ lol

No one meant 1 week in-game time @_@

never worked with my barb -.- I can find all set items within 10 hours as you said but barb related legendaries are still very close to impossible for me. never seen bul kathos weapons or vile ward or lamentation or bliss etc.

If you don't like the grind for gear D3 may not give you hundreds of hours. But if you enjoy getting each class up to a full class set, where the build really come together, you'll still get good value for your money compared to most other games.

I did that on Season 1, played a Crusader pretty casually until I completed Akkhan's and Rolands. Then I ran around T4 and called it a season. I wasn't interested in grinding the incremental upgrades to get to T6. (Season 2 and 3 I didn't enjoy because I just didn't enjoy Wiz enough to not play Heroes of the Storm instead)

Gear seems much inflated since then though, so I'm thinking I'll shoot for T7 at least this season.

But ya, if you play casually then it'll take you much longer than the 20 hours people are quoting to get a full set. I was around plvl 100 when I completed my set iirc. I was basically getting 1-2 plvl's / rift and it too many rolls at Kadala before I got any set pieces (never got a fancy weapon either).

I basically played the majority solo with the occasional pub game and with a friend whenever he was online.

I was just going to comment too that 17-18 hours is 1-2 weeks of playing.

I have some friends that are really unhappy with the patch because of how fast you can get items and get to the last torment level these days. It's weird that the game got to this kind of issue.

get them too slow, people complain. get them too fast, people complain. i think we can safely say that there is nothing Blizzard can do that will stop people from complaining.

I seriously don't think getting things too fast is an issue. That's such a poor and entitled mindset. WoW had the same complaints for years because the hardcore players kept whining as it got easier to gear up casually in (shitty) epics and stuff. Oh no baddies have purps now too! Muh e-peen! But the fact of the matter is if it takes you 10 hours to get a solid build and start doing GR30+ and it takes some casual hour-after-work dude 10 hours to get similar gear, you are still going to use it more effectively than they are (if you care enough), you're still going to find a way to progress via leaderboards, there is still always something to do. And if gearing a toon up to do the highest torment is your personal goal and you just want it to take longer so you can get more time out of the game, then that's wack lol. Plus even at that minimum level, 10-20 hours per season in a game that's a one-time payment is a pretty solid investment...

With GRs there is no real reason for Blizz to make grinding for gear take longer. If you're a fan of getting those drops and hoping for that one piece of loot after dozens or hundreds of hours then that's a very specific desire, and yeah sure you might burn out sooner. But in general there are ways to progress and push yourself now, with GRs, higher torments, etc. such that you shouldn't feel entitled to "grinding for gear should take a long time 'because Diablo'"
