In any sort of RPG or character-development games you will of course run into the problem of power creep with each expansion I don't think Blizzard is the only developer that has had with this issue, it's just that no other developers has had quite the number of expansions to a single IP like Blizzard has with WoW and to some extend the continuous patches of D3 which act as more or less mini-expansions. Im not saying there shouldn't be power increases. I am saying Blizzard has a recent history of making the increases bigger then they have to be. Going from level 30 to 35 doesn't mean your damage output has to double (numbers fictional). The problem with D3 is that the item balance and Auction House crippled the gameplay so horribly that they had to make everything from that period completely extinct come RoS. Everything after that is basically 1) fixing Marauder's set to function properly and 2) power creep as every class and set had to compete with the old Marauders. i still feel that a gold only auction house would work just fine in the game now that the loot system has been revamped. The loot system was revamped because the AH isn't there to let everyone go from 0-5billion crits for less than a million gold.
YMMV on if that hurts or helps the game, but there's really no way to have an Auction House and have current drops without killing the loot system entirely. Even the old AH stopped people from looting their own items.

With the current drop system and the introduction of Kanai's Cube there's no real reason for an auction house. Legendaries are a dime a dozen come Torment 6+

Even the old AH stopped people from looting their own items. the AH didn't stop people from looting their own items. the problem with the old loot system and AH was that it was almost impossible to find upgrades for your own class. this made the AH the only system for progression. now i think that loot drops are good enough that it'd just be a way to sell off your alt class gear or duplicate or triplicates of sets and stuff.
it'd give you a good way to gear up alts and stuff as well. i feel like the game needs better gold sinks and this is one option
|
Best way to gear alts now is to run as high a GR on your main as you can comfortably clear, farm bloodshards and use them on the alt to roll up your items from Kadala. In one day's playing my barb went from naked to 4/6 tier and all other slots filled with the items I want for the build.
Sure, the stats are still lacking, but once I finish that step of the gearing, my barb can step into rifts herself to get drops. Also cube gambling.
Game really needs a purpose to have gold though. As soon as you find your first Vault/Puzzle ring, gold becomes meaningless. My S4 has almost 2 billion gold already and the only real gold sink is getting your normal gems into highest level, which costs like ~20 mil in total for a gear set.

how long did you guys take from making a brand new character to getting reasonably geared? by reasonable i mean not like top top shit but good enough to play at higher difficulties
or a better question would be how long would it take for me, since i know nothing about the game in its current state. some of your answers will probably be a lot shorter than mine since you guys know the game and will therefore be way more efficient

Two weeks to be generous.

A week or two is pretty solid for someone playing casually and coming back to the game, I agree. As long as you focus on one class and use a resource (check out the Diablo 3 class subreddits) to guide your build + gambling + enchanting it's very easy to get into T5+ in that time frame with pretty much any class.

so i have to buy the game to get essentially 2 weeks of fun out of it? lol when i played before i actually played for free because korean pc bangs dont require you to own a copy, just an account. i dont think ill pay $80 in australia now to play for 2 weeks though. maybe if another expansion comes out

If youre playing to just get geared you're missing out on 95% of the reason to play imo. Half the fun of diablo is to be constantly be searching for that piece of gear thats finally an upgrade and to see how well you can push through rifts.
In other news Hamelin is the best boss in the world as an Uliana's monk. Once you have 6 set plus Gungdo Gear he literally kills himself on his constantly spawning rats.

D3 profile hero
Anyone know how far I could push as a mediocre player with this gear? I have FoE, Broken promises and the defensive bracers in Cube. I guess not that far since I still lack focus/restraint (gotten 5 focuses..)
Always been a fan of the monk, and Uliana makes it really fun to play, engaging and fast paced.

I'm missing FoE, Broken Promises, Bindings of the Lost plus F&R on my Uli monk and I'm clearing around 40 with relative ease with shitty gems. Id swap out the Unity passive skill for Mythic Rhythm or Near Death Experience. You should be able to clear at least 50ish without too much problems.

Hmm... You asked about reasonably geared. In 2 weeks thats possible. For the top gear its longer and depends how much you are playing.
For example I don't have time to play much and I play hardcore... Basically I will never get the absolute top gear = unlimited amount of fun

Right now, this season, in about 4~ days I was geared enough to faceroll T10/do grift 50+ (playing alot each day). This in on hardcore. It will take alot longer playing solo/a lot less each day.

Mythic Rhythm does not work on EP I guess determination for solo and unity for group is the only choice really.
I have the Near death on my hellfire ammy. I had unity for groupplay, I find it very fun now. Is it just me, or does it lag less now then before in groups?

But if you enjoy getting each class up to a full class set, where the build really come together, you'll still get good value for your money compared to most other games.

For me its about seasons. You get a lot from those 80 bucks imo if you are into the kind of game Diablo is. Every season now, there are new builds, legendaries, and updated sets. And with the Cube, this just got really interresting regarding gearing up. If D3 RoS was released today, people would be amazed compared to the flop it was before.
I don't recommend D3 to my friends, cause they are not really into reading up or figuring out how to gear a character. Next season you could try another class, or just stick to the one you already have and try out the new items that have gotten in. And playing in groups are fun. Gearing up for one build takes 2 weeks, being top dog takes a lot longer, and you can also aim to get items for an alternative build, or even gear up a new class in the same season if you play so much.

Approximately 48 to 60 hours and I even failed. First day I leveled with some buddies via campaign because for some reason I didn't notice I could switch to adventure mode. Second day we where all level 70 and did rifts, hit about level 130 paragon and got random pieces of gear, no exact set. Third day we complete our sets and start doing Torment IX and pushing Greater Rifts 40.
Right now I'm at 63 hours played on my seasonal Wizard and have done a Grift level 51. If you're smart about your time and focus on getting the right upgrades you should be able to replicate my results even if your time is spread out over several weeks in bursts of playing for 2-3 hours.

where is the most effective was to find items like bul kathos weapons or ik weapon? T10 or high grifts? I am not sure about upgrades form cube because i have never used it and very hard to find white (?) items for it.

Im kinda curious what is more effective aswell. Rifts or Greater Rifts. The lack of Death's Breath and their importance makes me thing Rifts are better even if they drop a bit less legendaries.
