Jay Wilson has come out and say that RMAH is a bust.
This is an unbelievably horrible piece of reporting (well maybe not so unbelievable with the IGN restructuring news).
I can't find a full interview; but just reading this one already lets you know he's not talking about RMAH specifically, it's actually more pointed at the *GOLD AH*:
Yea, wtf is with IGN's "coverage". That was terrible. Hopefully his whole presentation is uploaded to youtube soon. Interesting that they named the console D3 developer - "Josh Mosqueira", who apparently did Company of Heroes.

That has to be worldwide
well definitely.
edit - i'm actually pleasantly surprised it was that high. so many people in threads were tossing [random] numbers that were much lower. glad to see a good chunk of people still play.
I'm not good with statistics; but it seems if the distribution is1M /day and 3M / month; then most of the people still playing are playing pretty regularly? Which would also be good news if true.
I dunno, have to agree with what he said. I'm even thinking about giving the game a second chance on console, even after closing my bnet 2 account. I want to play an arpg, not auction house tycoon, or economy simulator. I'd prefer loot to be account bound, frankly.

I think it's all preference. I HATE the trend of BoA stuff in D3. That's not what D3 has ever been about. However, you can play self found if you wanted. It's actually reasonable to do with the recent changes and it should only get better with itemization fixes coming sometime.

Diablo has always been different things to different people. IMO, a Diablo game without the 'hostile' feature is not a true Diablo game (or 8 player games, a grind where people come together like Baal/Chaos runs etc). Preference is part of it, but when I quit playing, half the time I had problems finding a group that didn't kick me for not having RMAH-approved BiS gear. So it is something that affects everyone, and I may as well have been playing single player offline since I refused to use it. 4-person local co-op without split screen on consoles also sounds pretty cool.

AH wouldn't be a problem with proper itemization, and I don't know what do you mean with "abysmal drop rates". Drop rates and quality are like 5 times "better" than a year ago: the worse Strongarm Bracers (20k in AH) are better than 99.999% items we had when the problem was "drop rates are bad, we can't even clear Inferno after 2 weeks since release!!1!!!1". Inferno was supposed to be hard, developer said that they expected people to clear it in "months", which is exactly how it is for self-found play since patch 1.03 - so droprates were calibrated for that. Now people get tons of items while complaining that they are "worthless" (...on the AH, uh?), and they get a heavily nerfed game while complaining that there are too many bots (which last summer were farming Nightmare, now they can do Inferno MP3 with capped mf/gf thanks to paragon levels).
People saying that "droprates are bad" really have no clue. Nowadays I drop something like one legendary every 15 minutes or so, but the economy is worse than ever regardless of in-game AH or RMAH. Since there isn't a proper item sink the economy goes always in the same direction, people want "more of the same" and items that aren't perfect or nearly perfect lose value day after day. Repair costs were meant to be gold sink, now we get 5k bill per run while dropping piles of 4k gold. When was the last time you cared about item durabilty?
Drop rates are waaaaay too bad to play selffound still... Sure you can complete Inferno, but only getting two items from one set is beyond lucky, I honestly doubt there is one single self-found account with a complete 3 or even 4 item set !
I'm very interested how D3 will look on consoles without the AH, it's probably even gonna be the better game, pretty sad actually ..

Usually not a good idea to get full set anyways, you typically only use 2 slots to get the +to resists set bonus and then switch out the rest of the set pieces for better non-set gear.

Zuni set is worth completing if you're a bears user for that +20 mana regen. Anyway I think the new crafting has made self-found a lot more viable.
D3 core problem is itemization. There is almost no item make you super happy. For example you find an Echoic Fury. You won't happy for it because... The core of itemization problem is numbers... Unlike D2, D3 became a number game. +XYZ str(main stat), +XY attack speed, +X crit chance and damage..... These are only numbers. In D2 there was numbers too but these numbers was mean something. +X chance to make a thing., +X to specific skill. They changed it because... Ah need numbers. For example. D2 Immortal King's Stone Crusher is a decent Barbarian item. All Stone Crushers are same. (There are some exceptions ofc but generaly all unique and set items are similar stats.) AH would die without huge randomizaton of numbers.
Basically for each player in the game: Monster HP +50% (down from +70%) +10% GF/MF per player (new) +10% xp per player (new)
and uhh, archon counts kill credit for party kills. Seems like a nice change, though the though of playing in pub games still doesn't seem very appealing.
These are great changes for anyone who plays HC, as most of try to be in 4-player games regardless, just for the safety-in-numbers effect. 25% less monster HP in a 4-player game sounds good to me.

As I just got into HC, that's the first thing that came to mind for me as well. I also played with carmon who is an archon wiz and even tho he killed most stuff before I got to it, I had to be careful not to take a 'refreshing' kill on accident.
