And they should allow TPPKing in D2 Hardcore. That was awesome.
Sadly I don't think any game will ever be as good as D2X-HC, largely in part because the beauty of the game lay within the hacked, broken faults of it (duping SOJs creating a tradeable and easily liquid economic facilitator via fiat currency, TPPKing making hardcore more interesting and dramatic and.... hardcore, completely overpowered and imbalanced spells making dueling awesome, predictable level design making grinding/maphack easy to make many characters to flesh out the game, et cetera).
When I saw the "Arena" feature i was SORELY dissapointed. If I wanted to play some team, BS game I'd play WoW or TF2. Diablo was awesome because it you were on your own... you couldn't trust anyone, or risk getting pk'd 99% of the time and then losing your character permanently in hardcore. So awesome. Nothing more satisfying than being a punk'd newb, eventually getting good, finding the pker who killed you, and killing them, and then selling their ear on ebay for cash money for bragging rights. Maybe not many people did that besides me lol... edit: Also by the way, you more than likely liked to pick on people weaker than you. I would guess that very rarely (if ever) you intentionally fought someone you thought might be able to kill you. Real D2 pvp'ers know that the best PvP'ers are on softcore, not hardcore. The best PvE'ers are definitely on hardcore though. Granted in Hardcore most people did prey on the weak since more is at stake. To inform you tho back when i played in its heyday the hardcore scene had a vary important section of private hardcore pvp'ers. In softcore the collection of easily geared and risky players in pvp was hysterical in the eyes of hardcore pvp'ers. I myself had a 98HC priv dual sorc and would setup games and watch priv duals and they are worlds apart from the SC crap fest i would see. To the comments about gearing and time, most priv dual rules were setup so friends lvl1 would get loot privileges so gear wasn't lost or to your enemy depending on what was at stake. Plus back then with so much people playing and friends you could make a 85-90 character in like 1 sitting in HC was normal. Just because in HC you can die doesn't mean people could rush and get high level with no gear and stats put in. For me personally i lost a LOT of characters and gear no cheats no hacks and in a HC duals everything is different it was easily the most exciting thing D2 had to offer. The best part about it was when you took out the well know 95+ guy Ears meant something! ps. also killing your friends and having their ears was Hilarioouusss
I actually played a ton of HC through Diablo 2's lifetime, and I loved it. I loved the duels and stuff that went on, I loved the thrill of potentially dying because of some random spawn during a baal run. Beautiful really.
That being said, I'd argue that TPPKing killed HC almost single handedly because of a bunch of douchebags who couldn't fight fair, so instead abused game mechanics to kill random people (almost always weaker in the first place) without them having the ability to fight back. Not to mention that in my experience, even if the guy got caught in a bad spot where he had to fight fair he would have automatic heal bots which would use rejuvenations just before they'd die, and if they had no more pots it would just exit the game for them.
I suppose killed is the wrong word... many an HC player still play, the thing is they just play in private closed circles making the community almost non-existent.
As for Softcore/Hardcore PvP, I think both were pretty intense. I used softcore to practice up for HC most of the time. I think they are both he same in organized dueling, just Hardcore obviously has a much higher investment involved all around, making it a touch more conservative.

Tomorrow there should be a Conference call about Diablo 3. And most likely more details about the game and maybe Beta.
I'll try to get a link/time up.

Happiness ensues!
The years I've spent waiting are soon to become worth it, I hope! Rejoice my friends!

Wow, so much love for HC. Feels like home. D2HC was truly a gem. I'm not gonna speculate how hc is going to look like in D3 since I have 0 ground.
However, with PvP in D2, it was the best ever. Anyone remember legends like BaneOfBattler, Vargas, Frozyth? I'm sure there are a lot more but can't remember any right now.

I’m looking forward to sharing some more news about the game and our upcoming beta on the next call,” said Mike Morhaime on February 9th, 2011. “Finally, I wanted to remind everyone that we just announced our BlizzCon show for 2011, which will be taking place on October 21 and 22 at the Anaheim Convention Center. I cannot wait for D3 to come out. I know the big question is WHEN the game will actually come out but the question I have is "will Cain ever die?"

Even if he could, he'd become an angel

I don't actually see that being good. Cain is a slow walker so you could escape from him whenever he says "stay a while and listen."
But once he gets them wings he will follow you to the depth of Chaos Sanctuary even if you don't want to listen to him.

Blizzard said the whole investor call might be pretty boring because its an investors call, so it might be better to listen to the podcast. You also have to signup for the investors call to listen to it.

I will bet you like 45 e-sports dollars that Cain is killed/turned evil, it's the totally predictable offing of the beloved character to invigorate those emotional glands, and blizz is all about that kind of stuff.
I mean...who else are they going to put through hell and make the player care about? Gheed?
Tell you what would be cool and creative (ie. never going to happen)? Some sort of story element involving your merc from D2. Me and Emilio were best buds....went through hell with that guy!
