Pretty much, Studio Ghibli is teaming up with Level-5 and developing a game for the DS. The game is going to come with a book of spells (illustrated Ghibli style) and the total package will cost around 75$
I don't even own a DS, but when this comes out, that's going to change for sure.
The game comes with a 352-page book of magic spells that players use...
Wait... wait what? Is this for real? So people will have to read/constantly consult a *352* page spell dictionary to play the game? What? Sounds like sooo much fun.

well buying any console for just 1 game isn't worth it no matter what game it may be. if you dont really care about console games theres no point buying one

Well the problem is I'm bound to get bored of SC2 at someone in the distant future and I'm going to need some sort of entertainment. PC games suck in general. Years ago, I bought a PS2 and played it for about a month until I didn't find any of its games amusing. I've been wary of buying consoles since.

Oh well, I don't own a PS3, nor do I plan to so I guess I'll admire it from afar lol

yeah agreed, it just seems outdated, but it wouldnt have been enough for me to get a ps3 anyways.
However, on a NDS I think I might like it, that might be another reason to get myself a 3DS when it gets released and own a nintendo product for the first time in my life ^^

Absolutely. Mmm, Hotel Dusk with art like this on a DS (maybe not the sort of adventure game you had in mind...). Or, sure, I'd settle for a solid platformer.
That is the most beautiful game I have ever seen. Looks like random battles though which I think is a huge mistake. Games shouldn't have random battle systems anymore.
On June 26 2010 17:20 IntoTheWow wrote: Can anyone explain why is this so good? (seriously i don't understand the hype)
Because Studio Ghibli make the best animation films. Even people who hate anime usually enjoy their productions. So you will have a beautiful game with an awesome OST. The gameplay will probably be tedious tough.

I honestly think that video sucks. It's not even pretty in a fantasy-style way, it's just cartoon-ish and childish. The combat seems like the most boring and uninspiring thing ever. I wouldn't even play this game on my phone.
When I was 10 I used to play Doom and Starcraft, I bet I would have found this ridiculous even back then.
Ya no cool moves, no boobs and no fatalities, that's suck. This is for kids. You can't even shot people i'm sure that Soldier of fortune is a way better game.
On June 26 2010 17:20 IntoTheWow wrote: Can anyone explain why is this so good? (seriously i don't understand the hype)
Studio Ghibli is home to some of the best animated films of all time, I'd honestly put them on par with disney or pixar. Check out princess mononoke or spirited away, or pretty much any other one of their films. I don't generally like anime but those movies are a+++ in every way.
Level 5 have made some RPGs. Dark Cloud 2 is a 10/10 game imo, their other stuff hasn't been anywhere near as good but if they can strike gold again I wouldn't be surprised if this was it, considering they're working with studio freaking ghibli.
Hayao Miyazaki + Hideki Kamiya making a game together would be overkill for me. I admire both for what they create - you can really see they love their work. *daydreaming* *(Kamiya made Okami for example, I think they'd have a really nice synergy) **(Kamiya is also a master of gameplay, see his creations DMC and Bayonetta)

Most console games are 'kiddie crap', grow up already. The animation and graphics has nothing to do with the complexity or maturity of the game. But personally I'm not very impressed either, especially because it looks like typical JRPG crap instead of a great adventure game.

No but seriously, that video is just underwhelming. And I can't understand how so many people seem excited about it? THAT is a fascinating adventure setting? REALLY?
Ah, but what do I know of the high-life of hardcore console gamers..

Jesus I HATE 99% of anime because they are ugly, poorly animated and plain stupid. I HATE JRPG because they are retarded design and gameplay wise. I don't even have a console.
However i have enjoyed all the Studio Ghibli i have watched. Why ? Because they don't have a stupid Shōnen-like plot, because they don't feature underaged female characters with oversized boobs and large eyes and because they are meticulously crafted. Most of their work are initiatory tales but it is well done and doesn't look stupid. They have also wonderful universes influenced by real foreign artists which is completly different of the cliche crap found in the average Japanese anime. I like their works because they don't look like typical animes but are AAA+ animated films as good if not better than the best Disney and close to gems like the king and the mockingbird or the crippled The Thief and the Cobbler. Ah that's also why Studio Ghibli are great, because they are financially successful and have many gifted employees and they can make a good movie in less than 30 years ( sry Grimault and Williams ).
Does that mean that i'm highly excited ? No. I don't own a console and i probably won't even play this game, moreover i have already said that the gameplay doesn't look really interesting. But i enjoy their movies so i will probably take a look to the videos on youtube or something to see how the game looks, i'm kinda interested to see the 3D+drawing art. I'm just curious.
The sport & game forum is filled with threads about terribad games, there are multiple threads about mediocre/bad animes and you come here to shit on Studio Ghibli whereas you have not even watched one of their movies ? Who are you seriously -.-
Please don't tell me you like Naruto or Final Fantasy crap.

He didn't even say that he never watched a Ghibli movie(not that it would matter in any way). But if you want someone who definitely did, here I am...and I agree with him.
Best thing about Studio Ghibli is that their characters aren't one dimensional. And good god they never have a robot-Rei-esque, character that most Anime are plague with. Those make me want to punch them.
1.This has nothing to do with Ghibli movies. Let me rephrase: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
2.People were getting pumped up for a GAME, and they did so with that video in mind (at least the comments I was addressing seemed to do this). Different posters stated they are amazed at the graphics and the beauty of the world, which, personal taste in mind, I cannot for the life of me hold as above average. The combat shown seemed boring, and turned-based/WoW-like. That does not make a great game, even if their films are great.
3.Stop getting so defensive over a game you know almost nothing about yet, I understand you appreciate the company as a whole but it is not a dedicated game company. Even if the game turns out to have a deep and entertaining plot, no one can judge that yet.
4.No I have not watched any Ghibli films as far as I know, but that was 100% irrelevant to everything I've said, and no I don't like Naruto or any other anime for that matter, and I don't understand the appeal this genre/subculture carries for people in their late teens/early twenties, but that is irrelevant to the previous discussion as well.
5.In short, my whole point is: how can people respond so positively to that video, is that really an atmosphere (which is the key word) and gameplay (from the limited footage seen) you can enjoy? It was just honest amazement, because my opinion differs, so no I wasn't being objective, but I won't start an argument debating personal taste.
dude, minus_human, you're pretty much sounding like an asshole
so there's a ton of stuff you don't like, well that's too bad, your loss
why can't other people get excited about it and you say you aren't going to start an argument about it but you've made 3 or 4 posts in this thread pressing your opinion about it
1.) of course this has to do with ghibli movies... what the hell, how can you even say that
2.) your opinion. i think graphics have a shitload to do with the game, i've enjoyed games with fun graphics way more than i would otherwise. tales of symphonia was like that for me
3.) you sound way defensive yourself
4.) it's pretty relevant if you know what kind of products ghibli puts out then you know what to expect
5.) they respond positively because they like what they see. fucking duh
6.) who isn't relaxed? you seem the least relaxed of anyone in here
i think you have some reading comprehension problems but i'm nice so i will bold the important part.

I don't really want to discuss this issue anymore because eh you have clearly won the argument. I mean you have enjoyed Doom when you were ten years old, you are a tough guy. You don't know anything about Ghibli but that doesn't matter because you know it all anyway, that's so irrevelant that you can't understand why people have expectations.
travis your 5th point is the only one that makes remote sense, bearing in mind what I wrote. You are fully ignoring every point I made.
I was referring to Boblion about the defensive part (his long post is the only reason I made a long post myself). And if I sound defensive in the least, it's because I felt the need to elaborate, while being civil, seeing as I didn't meant to offend anyone, despite using a harsh tone previously. Can't I be critical without fanboys taking offense? Apparently not. Notice the question I quoted in my first post.
I really don't care enough about this to post again in this thread. If you really like what you see that much, enjoy your anime and consider it my loss, and let's be done with it.
Really, is this thread for bitching about why we shouldn't be excited for an interactive reenactment of some of our childhood dreams???
Imho the visuals are really quite pleasing, and although the gameplay/fighting system seems rather tried I haven't actually played it so I would be in no position to judge. It just seems awesome to have a game by Studio Ghibli, and I am so relieved that they didn't try to make an attachment to their classic films (Making "Laputa: The Game", and "Mononoke Hime`: The Game" would totally ruin their classic nostalgic appeal).

6. Relax.
you don't get it.
If blizzard announced that they are going to take everything in starcraft and make a 2 hour movie, and that they want to make it true to the game rather than conforming to shit hollywood standards, we'd all be going crazy just the same.
well, Studio Ghibli saying they are making a game is pretty much the same thing, except the other way around. You saying that this is not a big deal without even watching a studio ghibli movie before is like you saying that blizzard making a sc movie is not a big deal even though you have never played sc.
i'll try not to be more of an asshole seeing as i don't want to get banned.
5. In short, my whole point is: how can people respond so positively to that video, is that really an atmosphere (which is the key word) and gameplay (from the limited footage seen) you can enjoy?
Watch some Studio Ghibli films and you'll understand.
People are loving the trailer so far because it embodies the spirit that you'd expect from a Studio Ghibli film. You can't really describe it properly without having seen one, but I'd venture that being able to explore the environment of the game - something that has always been a hallmark of SG films - is going to be a huge drawcard.
The character design has also always been fantastic, and the trailer exhibits that. There is a limited scope on what the game will be like, but so far all the proper markers have been laid, and that's one of the reasons why people are getting excited. It looks and feels like something that Studio Ghibli would make.
And if you don't understand why that's such a big thing, watch Spirited Away. It's easily one of the best animated films of all time, and it was one of the best films of the year - animated or live action - when it was released.
I get it, people are fans of their franchise(s). I couldn't ever be excited over a Jrpeg, exactly like what that video portrayed. I admit to being overly critical and maybe it was uncalled for.
And travis you have some sort of problem related to comprehension. The guy with 12 posts makes much more sense than you.
I love how you reply to me, and then after I say nothing you reply to me again 4 posts later despite saying you weren't going to post about it again(for like the millionth time)
i can't get hot over a jrpg either - they drive me batshit insane.
but trust me (as much as you can trust a stranger over the internet), studio ghibli films are far from overflowing with an excess of japanese weirdness.
there's also another factor involved in this that hasn't really been mentioned - level 5.
level 5 are the guys behind the professor leyton's series. they've got a solid track records coming out of japan that hasn't been tarnished by bouts of retardation (square enix) or the writers suffering from parkinsons (hideo kojima).
so yeh, hook up an awesome film company with an awesome game developer. think pixar and origin systems.
Don't wanna be a party breaker, but what's so special about that trailer. The only good thing I found was the soundtrack, everything else seems so childish and pokemonish. No offense :o

I actually found that last sentence pretty funny.
But anyways this game just looks to be an embodiment of the artistic flare that Studio Ghibli produces. The trailer looks great, but like many others in this thread the turn base will probably turn me off to the game. But it still looks beautifully done.
The combat system is combination turn-based and real-time.
It seems pretty obvious in the posts who had seen many Ghibli films before and who hadn't. The characters might be "kiddie" but Ghibli is masterful at creating engaging, "familiar" worlds and uses a lot of adult themes in most of their movies - especially war and destruction - and the kids are placed in adult situations. On top of that, the animation quality is excellent and the character design/art direction is usually top notch.
The characters are kiddie, but the stories are meant for teens and adults, and would probably frighten a lot of young kids. No, the first trailer didn't show that much but there's a level of expectation when the vast majority of the studio's 17 films have been good, and at least half of them (mostly Miyazaki's) are amazing. They rarely select bad projects, and Level5 has a pretty outstanding reputation as well.
