2022-23 ESL Pro Tour - Open Cups: Week #230 (May 27th)

by Wax

The stakes were abruptly raised in Week #230 of the Open Cups, with Oliveira's top four finish at EPT Spring/Dallas opening up an unexpected extra Esports World Cup seed for Asian region players. This resulted in EPT Asia's #2 ranked player (Wiki)Coffee (780 points at the start of the Open Cups) and #3 player (Wiki)Cyan (770 points) going all out against each other amidst the thinned out pool of players (EPT Asia standings).

Coffee quickly capitalized in the Korean server cup, securing five extra points with a runner-up finish. As for Cyan, he missed out on points entirely, losing in the RO8 to Firefly. The weekly championship went to (Wiki)Solar, who was clearly the strongest player in a pool depleted due to the top contenders being occupied with travel from EPT Dallas.

While players from East Asia rarely bother with EU cup competition due to latency, both Cyan and Coffee threw their hats in the ring due to the high stakes. Ultimately, neither of them was able to obtain any points as Coffee went out in the RO8 while Cyan lost in the RO16. As for the final result, (Wiki)ShoWTimE pulled off a minor upset by taking down MaxPax to win an Open Cup for the first time since Week #180 (June of 2023). MaxPax had been the favorite to win in Clem's absence, but ShoWTimE proved his underrated PvP prowess with a 3-1 victory.

The Americas server cup finally saw Cyan and Coffee go head-to-head in the quarterfinals, which resulted in Coffee narrowly prevailing by a 2-1 score to obtain two extra EPT points. Though Coffee was subsequently defeated 2-0 by Solar in the next round, one imagines he was still happy with his overall performance as he extended his lead on Cyan to 17 points (797 points vs 780). In terms of the actual weekly championship, (Wiki)MaxPax made up for his EU server loss with a near-flawless run that ended in a 2-0 over ShoWTimE and a 3-0 over Solar. Amusingly enough, MaxPax's potentially perfect run was ruined by little-known American Zerg Yuno in the RO16, who just happened to be playing in his first SC2 tournament since 2021. Way to make a comeback!

I wish you's have highlighted that Showtime made Top4 (a win included) on ALL 3 regions in the same day!

I find it funny that MaxPax keeps on losing in the final of the EU cup, yet he keeps on winning the AM one.
It's good to be back

There was also a Kung-Fu Cup this week: (Wiki)Kung Fu Cup/2024/Weekly/S1/5

MaxPax took the victory against herO, with herO choosing to play Terran in the finals. Crazy.

Shout-out to fellow Cannon memer Gref for taking out Trap 2-0 in the Ro32!

Off racing a bo5 is pretty ambitious. Kind of wish hero would have taken at least one game but was pretty obvious it wasn't going to happen.

Possibly just fishing for gameplay responses to mimic

Whoops, somehow that slipped my mind. Kudos to ShoWTimE for taking on the 3 server challenge several times in recent weeks!
AdministratorHey HP can you redo everything youve ever done because i have a small complaint?

I’m intrigued as to how herO’s Terran looks, pretty ballsy to attempt to go up against Maximus Paximus but I guess his PvP is pretty damn formidable

Clem is much less likely to compete in the NA one. That's the reason.

Wow for a canon rusher to take out a GSL player like that, it's really a dream come true

It was terrible, he tried 3 times 1 base all in, in one game he left when his proxy barracks were scouted at the start of the game, others games were not much better either.

This is one of the least surprising things I’ve read all week, thanks

I didn't mind it.

It's tough to draw conclusions but the safe guess is that he thought it was strong and/or wanted to see how he responded.
The only downside is due to the nature of him even picking T MaxPax is going to be even more vigilant in scouting and hyper safe or aggressive play.

Esp considering it happened not long ago that Nicoract surprised him with proxy 2-rax marauder in WTL, so he had even more reasons to keep vigilant
I'm just a cynical video game enjoyer who is probably unfazed by many business dealings many would find utterly distasteful, while not strictly illegal by the law as seen in a general sense in the world.
