I find the game to be much slower paced than Civ 4, you guys agree? Since you can't stack workers, it seems like it takes forever to get tiles improved which leads to slower infrastructure and slower unit production. Thoughts?

Also, I'm having a hard time adjusting to the economy of Civ 5, I feel it's REALLY gold stressed. If you don't have a lot of extra gold, it's hard to do much

Civ V forces more specializing due to fewer hammers to go around. No more building a Library in your army producing city just because you felt like it.

The best strategy is to get one high production city with a lot of hills, sufficient food, and set the focus to production. Make a Granary and military buildings here then only produce units. Everywhere else should aim for a mix of food and gold, with various improvements. You don't need a huge army, but it's important to keep pumping out units so you don't fall too behind, even if you don't plan on waging war. Keep your units along your borders and the AI will be much less likely to attack you since you have defended borders.

Bold for emphasis the Marathon games are LONG as hell especially with the research, tile improvement, and building. It starts to build up as more workers and economy builds up but wow.

I will agree that you need to speed it up to 'quick' to match the speed of civ4 'standard', but I dont know if I agree with the whole worker thing.

In civ4, your worker would complete improvements too fast, and when you're on slavery whipping them to death you have way more improvements than you need. Not to mention, you have to build roads to hook everything up. In civ5, unless I get some ruins that give me an early boost to population, a single worker can usually keep up with my city. Also, with an improvement you cant get a wheat/cow/anything over 4 food per tile (as opposed to the 5 or 6 in civ4), so cities grow slower.

Basically, it's slower to build things, but because we don't have 20 population cities anymore, its not really effecting things as much as people seem to think, imo.

EDIT: Because I dont want a single 1-word post, this edit is in reply to the below post, from above!

Wow.

Also, a bug I'm sure, rolled a map where America was one of the Civs and instead of a scout they had rifleman, and this was around 400 BC and he was in Classical. Thought I had grabbed a screen but only got a still from the starter FMV.

Depends on your computer, I think. Haven't really had too many issues myself though.

Any chance at all I can play this game with my crappy laptop?

IntelCore 2Cpu
U7600 @ 1,20 GHz
790 MHz, 1,99 Go RAM

Graphic card: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family.

I guess not, but it always worth asking.

Starcraft 2 doesn't run in lowest parametre: it's incredibly laggy.

Lol. This would ensure a speedy victory for you, unless a comp got it. Then you are screwed

I can't wait untill I can finally get a copy next weekend. No time a pick it up or play it before that time.

Maybe that unit had discovered multiple ruins in a row that happened to give them advance weapons =D.

I severely doubt you can though you can trying going to http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ and seeing if they think you can run it.

Regardless, if you even can run it, it will be laggy as all hell

Playing through my second game now. Here are my thoughts...

Pros
  • The new combat with the hex tile system is just badass. Unit stacking got boring quickly.
  • Really like the approach on strategic resources (one tile can have 3 available while another might have 5). Building a unit that uses a strategic resource actually reduces the amount you have available by 1 which just makes sense given the change to combat and how many units you will actually have on the field. In the first game I played, I only had 4 oil available so I decided to skip tanks and just save the oil for battleships and wait for mech infantry and modern armor.
  • Happiness is now empire wide and very openly tied into golden ages. It's a little "weird" (by previous Civ standards) to build a colloseum in one city and have that bonus make up for another city but it works. I definitely disliked how cities became unhappy in the old games and limiting growth was really the only way to keep production up eventually.
  • Absolutely love how culture works in this game and how it ties into policies. Instead of enduring a few round of anarchy and jumping from Soviet Russia to modern day New Zealand, you actually have to plan out your policy routes. Deciding what to pick each time actually takes me a bit of time. And tied into this, I like how cultural borders spread now. The ability to buy tiles seems a little superficial but I think some interesting choices arise from it.
  • Tile improvements have had some small changes that I like. For one, roads/railroads cost 1 gp per tile in maintenance costs but on the flip side, you don't need to connect resources by road. No more paving your entire empire. As well, great person buildings (like an academy) are now tile improvements.
  • No pollution. I think instead, they tied in higher maintenance costs to structures like a factory.

Cons
  • I really enjoyed the videos that used to go along with finishing a wonder but now it's just a picture. Kind of a step back imo (correct me if this is some setting I missed).
  • My laptop (Nvidia 310M, 6GB, i5) can not run the game using the DX10-11 version without it being very choppy (with low settings). I have to use the DX9 version which runs very well on medium settings (1366*768 res). Not sure if this is just a driver issue or the fact that my GPU is only DX10. Even so, the graphics aren't that much better than Civ 4 imo. Rivers just look silly.
  • As MTF mentioned, the sound isn't that great. I mean, I'm not outright disappointed but I've come to expect more.
  • No longer able to see specifically why another civ is hostile to me. I prefer seeing my exact score with another civ but I can see this changing as I get more experience with the game.

Still haven't decided how I feel about city-states. I more or less ignore them until a chance to make them happier arises (taking out a barbarian encampment that's close to me) or I feel I need their bonus for something in which case I will pay them gold. I haven't take any of the policies that affects the relationship you have with them.

Wait, you dont need roads to connect resources to cities? You mean I've been doing that all this time for no reason?

Yeah, I'd even go for them recycling his smooth volcals in the new game. I also think for the spaceship victory he should appear from space and shake your leader's hand.

Yeah, you don't. I think all the resource needs to be is inside your border.

The most annoying thing I've found so far is the lag. I have a fairly recent computer (i7-930) and the leader screen just lags. Whenever I have diplomatic contact with a major civ, my game freezes for around 5 seconds.

Also, it seems that resources now give much fewer bonuses as compared to previous civ games. The bonus resources now are terrible. At least the strategic and luxury resources give something other than bonus resources. Right now, I don't really see the differences between resources such as cattle and wheat versus just plain grassland with a farm.
