I'm going to try Japan on a harder level tomorrow and see how I fare against a tougher AI, because that was just ridiculous.

I just assumed since my steam demo won't open up that I can't run it.

I conquered my continent, on the other continent the Japan AI WIPED out everything include a shitload of city states. Now that is some scary shit!!

Using city states as generals is awesome. especially when you get to not have any unit maintenance from them, in fact the city state PAYS you to use your units for them in resources AND food/culture/units/great people/happiness/science. though to be fair the most OP might be persia? i played a game and besides my first few turns i was in golden age for the rest of my 440 turn game. thats rediculous.

I had a pretty free week so I played alot of civ in the evenings. First game I just crushed everyone as rome on prince, good to get used to the game I guess. For my second game I moved the difficulty up one (King I think?) and tried to win via culture victory. Culture is weird in this game, its empire wide culture instead of 3 cities, but the needed amount increases by 30% per city you have. This means for a city to be worth it it has to increase your total culture gains by over 30%, which for any new city will take quite awhile for that to happen. So you have to minimize cities while still having enough production to keep up in science and military. I just made four good cities at the start and tried to hold with them for the (eventual) victory. Unfortunately, the random landmass was Continents and Hiawatha just ran around and clobbered everyone else on the map, until I quit around 1800AD when I saw gigantic armies lining up on my border. I really dont think you can get enough culture to win before you get Radio, for broadcast tower (double culture in that city) and the Cristo Redinator(-25% culture needed to adopt social policies) wonder. I sat there and Spammed wonders/culture stuff in my litter corner of the map as hard as I could while keeping up in science/military. But was still like 8-10 policies away when I gave up. I guess one of the keys to the culture win is to adopt your social policies in the right order. You dont need to finish a category to move onto the next one. I started in Tradition and then Got Piety and switched to Freedom for Constuition and Free Speech asap. I think I probably needed to get Patronage sooner and really ally up with cultural city states for more early game culture/resources. I wasn't really sure what to do with my tons of great artists either. You can make a terrain improvment to work for 4+ culture/turn, but with only 4 cities I can only plant so many of them. Culture bomb doesnt seem amazingly useful as I have nowhere to really expand b/c I cant make many cities. Finally, culture is really boring, once I got into the mid-late game where I really couldn't do much for fear of angering the great Hiawatha, I pretty much ended turns like 30 times in a row, as I only had 4 cities pretty fully built up and an army that was only powerful enough to defend myself because of huge +strength on friendly soil from Wonders+Policies . I really probably should have been more active in allying with cultural city states. On the plus side I had like a 60-70turn long Golden Age going at one point.

Btw Maritime city-states are absurd. They're at least +4 food in your capital and +2 food in every other city if you're Allied (this goes up to at least +5/+3 later). I wouldn't say the free culture or units from other city-states are bad, but they're nowhere near a free extra granary in every city (especially if you have lots of extra land from war).

I also had my first case of 'rage-quitting' AI after I shut down a pretty huge French attack. My town was redlined but I finally got reinforcements around and wiped out 5-6 each musketeers and crossbowmen. Afterwards, Napoleon gave me everything he could. Combat is a blast.

If you guys feel like playing multiplayer with some trustworthy guys who won't go to bed when their mum shouts out, then you should join my Civ nights. I will organize it with people from different forums and games, and if someone misbehave they will be excluded from the coming games. So, if this sounds interesting you can pm me.
