ahhh the HoH days were so fun. Hearing people bitch about imbalances, or seeing the top guilds all on a track to the HoH were SO fun. Lots of trash talking and joking around.
ETA: War Machine and Evil were really good. Not only were they legit good players but they also played in cyber cafes which led to lots of team fight rapes. Te iirc was like one of the best Euro guilds in the game.

Bob...god why does that name ring a bell?
And it was the other way around, SC players switched to GW lol. I faintly remember YEARS ago making posts on TL about playing GW. The only person I remember that played from TL was Ver since we were in the same guild but I think I left a few months after he joined.
ETA: I think the best time in Guild Wars were the days of Ele Spike that led to Ranger Spike. LOL. God people RAGED so hard over that shit then came IWAY and the game went to insane heights of popularity.

Fucking hated IWAY, every noob and their gay little pet was running that. Gave the thousands of people who enjoyed playing the mindless class of them all a reason to actually compete for a change.

Dude, have you ever seen an Assassin/Ranger wicked sick combo? Sharpen weapons (+shitton of damage + really high bleeding damage + serious wound + what not) + barrage. Mo-mo-mo-mo-monster kill!

Jesus, so this is where some of the old iQ members went to.
Haha, I always idolized iQ. They were always the #1 guild in the game to me. I really missed them after they just disappeared after the GWFC.
As for GW2, I'm glad this is happening, but really, I hope that it doesn't end up being a letdown like the original became.

yea thats why I said GW got super popular. Before IWAY casual gamers got fucking mauled in HoH. Then that shit came out and 80% of the groups in HoH were IWAY hoes. Easy to defeat but there would always be the annoyance factor.

no cuz I quit in January 2006 Various reasons but some of it did have to do with the development of the game. I faintly remember so many stories about arguing with devs, getting kicked out of the Alpha test, arguments with Gaile Grey (lol) and all kinds of funny shit from those days on the private forums. ArenaNet had a solid gold PvP system on their hands and they screwed it up at the time. I'd assume in the following years it got better?

iQ was so much fun. Soooooooo many hours of theorycrafting. I used to post a ton on TGH, and GWGuru before it got turned into a PvE factory. I was the guy on forums telling people stop fucking around with dumb skills like Wastrel's Worry. Besides Ensign I was probably the most vocal one of the old members. As for the best guilds there were some that were great at all kinds of builds, then some that just dominated with one build. I'll never forget the time we had this INSANE match vs PrP when Ranger Spike was popular and we had just found an answer to it.

you said "Ver" I thought you were refering to veritus, which is one of the monks in iQ and used to be kind of my terran mentor when i was worse. I used to play with rayne, ensign, ringking etc a while back too. Do you still play any GW or SC ace? what was your gw name
|
lol all this gw talk brings back some great memories ;p i wonder if i have a screenshot folder somewhere.. i *did* find this though + Show Spoiler [old old ladder] +
how many of those guilds do u guys remember?
|
Veritus...don't remember Ver = Zeru from GW I rarely play SC anymore, havent logged into GW in over 2.5 years. Let's see I had FourPoolRush,Blackace and um...I forgot the rest. But Blackace was the name I was most known by. I played with all those guys you listed but I think when RingKing came around I was just about leaving. Same with Pally too.
@JeeJee: I remember them all ^_^

ic, you were first gen iQ then. Rayne auggie ensign made an attempt to come back to the game and we tried to form a guild but nobody really had the drive to play. Since you left anet actually made a lot of improvements in the PvP and eventually just gave up trying to fix the game because so many people had already quit and just started GW 2. Most notably
seperation of pvp and pve skills -- ie nerfs to pvp skills didnt effect pve and vise versa observer mode automated tournaments with pre-determined map selection smaller, more often balance patches that would only slightly tweak skills in game character creation screen that allowed you to create/modify pvp weapons and armor without having to reroll
double fame weekend next weekend, lets go~

Yup I'd be first generation iQ. I forgot the old guild name we had but it was from the BWE event where I had just accidentally met up with Enisgn and we started owning people. Not surprised they lost their drive to play - if you only knew the amount of pleading we did with Anet to change certain things. Sounds like they listened too late if everyone quit.
seperation of pvp and pve skills -- ie nerfs to pvp skills didnt effect pve and vise versa
They really did this? Wow. It took them 2+ years to pull this simple task off? Seriously like the entire PvP playerbase BEGGED for this. If they did this in 2005 or early 2006 GW would have been monstrous. I remember when WoW Battlegrounds came out and people hated it so much they craved GW PvP. Anet dropped the ball of course.
observer mode I think I came back once and saw this. They were planning on it for a while though, thank god
automated tournaments with pre-determined map selection Thats fucking sweet.
smaller, more often balance patches that would only slightly tweak skills I think Izzy was trying to do this for ages but they had restrictions on how he could balance things. I don't necessarily agree with this though since sometimes you gotta let the metagame playout. Of course with IWAY being run 80% in Tombs you'd need a patch.
in game character creation screen that allowed you to create/modify pvp weapons and armor without having to reroll
wow...what took them so long :/
Do any of the old guilds still play? Are there still a lot of people playing the game at all?
|
Right now the game is almost entirely euro dominated. A few of the better US guilds broke up and the rest of the US guilds died due to inactivity. Euro hours are still pretty strong although no recognizable players still play. Yeah so many things that anet should have done forever ago that they just started implementing. Even though it sucks the fact of the matter is they recognize the path where the game should be going now. I'm in pretty good touch with isiah cartwright along with most of my last serious(lol) guild and I think they are headed in the right direction. The only player you might recognize that I saw recently is A Z N Half.

The pvp has a skill ceiling that rivals quake 3 and Starcraft yet the game is an rpg. Even though I don't really play right now I usually log in about once a week to observe matches. I hope gw2 can live up to the first. The only difference is that ANet hardly supported competitive play at all after their first few tournaments towards the beginning, and made it incredibly hard for 3rd party groups to host tournaments of any kind. Hopefully they change that around with GW2 and support competitive play rather than catering only to the PvE community. I'm a semi high level GvG player and you're right, it is pretty competitive and the skill barrier is quite high, not as high as SC but it's up there. I hope that GW2 will at least have some form of really high level PvP to it, in a format that doesn't have the same problems as GvG does currently for tiebreaker/ending matches. They say they'll have a GvG-like format but we'll have to see how much fun/competitive it actually is. EDIT: I said competitive a lot ;c hi angra ^_^
GW2 isn't much to be hyped about, since it's probably going to be primarily a PvE game. ArenaNet has (probably) learned from GW1 that the real money lies in PvE, and PvP is just a cash cow that doesn't return anything but minor advertising. I expect to be extraordinarily underwhelmed.
We've also been shown time and again that ArenaNet can't really balance their existing game. Over and over, the GW1 community has been slapped with updates that consistently deteriorate the quality of PvP.
But then again, they have spent a pretty long time on GW2, so perhaps this time has paid off, and all these skill updates on GW1 are simply experiments they'll learn from in GW2. I do hope GW2 will be a good game, and that ArenaNet will fix the errors they've made in the past.

That's Izzy's real name isn't it? Rings a bell lol
@lutz: Part of the problem was you had some PvP oriented devs that knew what they wanted to do but couldn't. It's not everyone but a majority of the decision were bad for PvP.
|
@Ace, they added a lot of things to help out pvp'ers and pve'ers alike. In addition to the re-customizeable character in-game (the only limit was your primary class) you could create skill and equipment templates so that you could switch from one entire skill/equipment set to another in the click of a button. You could also unlock pve skins for pvp characters and be able to customize the appearance of them if you wanted to.
