It's probably because JYP has a fair understanding about the American market, but I think the problem was WG had too much Engrish and not enuf English. They would've done even better I think if they had HyeLim during the time they were at America. Who I think would have the best chance of breaking out in the American market, MayDoni Kim Yeah, I realize that Utada = Cubic U and that she was in the U.S market, and specifically I was referring to her '09 English/US album "This Is the One" which...did...ten times better in Japan than in the U.S. It sold something in the realm of 20k, if I remember correctly? And I don't think it broke Top 50 on the Billboard Top 200, even at its peak. I know that BoA also released an English album in '09, but I don't think it made much wave either. All in all, the music industry is a lot about making money. I keep bringing up Utada cause I know the most about her, but she made a pretty hefty English album, with some thirteen songs (remixes included), a Stargate production team, and almost nothing came out of it. I suppose you can say, sure, but she got her name out there. But I don't think she really did, and people know about her as much as they did before the album, that is to say, not much at all. It just seems like a lot of effort for not much gain, at least right now. The thing with the WG, is that sure, they might be breaking into the American market more than any of their precedessors at the moment, but they seem to have sacrificed their popularity in Korea. I mean, with all this competition and how groups disband after relatively short amount of time, it seems like they've been all but pushed aside. Unless they do something extraordinary, it seems hard for them to regain a strong foothold. And, you have people like the guy a few posts ago saying they're "old-school" now...

Either way I still think Asians will never be a part of popular music in America. Unless you want to consider Amerie a success =P I mean you wanna break into another market that isn't your own country, at least learn the fricking language first (unless you're the Phillipines which just LOVES Korean stuff). Out of all the Japanese people that have done stuff in Korea, only YooMin has been moderately successful because she knows enough Korean to at least get by. Her being casted in IRIS is probably one of her most successful roles that I've seen her in. When Jyongri or Crystal Kay perform in Japan, they KNOW Japanese. BoA KNOWS Japanese. At least Sunday in CSJH or Lee JiHyun in long time ago Jewelry KNOWS Japanese. In order to attempt to break into America and succeed, both the higher ups (like JYP) AND the performers should have proficiency in the language. JYP's probably done the best job so far because if at least he doesn't know the American market too well, he can definitely communicate with others a lot easier than lets say, Yang Hyun Suk (YG) or Lee Soo Man (SM). I mean if they're breaking in WG (without HyeLim), they should send a performer or group of performers that's English capable and have enough talent to shine in the American market. Furthermore they should be able to assimilate to Western Culture fairly easily with what they perform being able to live there. That's why SNSD will get rejected easily in America. Here's my list of potential Koreans that could do well in America TigerJK + Yoon MiRae Maydoni Kim Uptown / UPT members that know english (Maniac, Chan, Carlos Galvin, et. all) And who MAYBE could have a chance 2NE1 (When three of your four members have English speaking capability...) U-Kiss 1TYM's Danny / Taebin (if he ever sings again)

The problem that a lot of people on soompi discuss about is that 2NE1 and Big Bang will be made fun of a lot if they ever try to make it in the states. People will label 2NE1 wannabe thugs (using their outfit in their "Fire" MV as an example) while Big Bang are hypebeats. It took a while for white people to be accepted into the hip hop/rap scene (Eminem) without getting made fun of.

Yeah, pop culture in the Philippines is all about bandwagoning everything foreign. Weeaboo is fast becoming the norm here. It's colonial mentality, I guess.
